Sameen Rana of Lahore Qalandars:

"I am very happy that Lahore Qalandars have not just impressed Pakistan cricket but also Indian cricket. If you look at Umran Malik's story, you will see that it has been a Haris Rauf-inspired story. Maybe they had followed Haris' story and must have thought if it can happen in Pakistan, then why not in India. Because there are a lot of similarities. Both started from tennis-ball cricket, are from Jammu and Kashmir, no background in first-class cricket"

"I have never seen that happen in IPL before. And it happened until Haris, who became a success and gave others a new pathway. I hope it doesn't happen to Umran, but we were criticised a lot when Haris was in our team that we killed domestic cricket and affected the sport. But today, he is Pakistan's pride. When he goes abroad and plays for teams like Yorkshire, they call him 'Pakistani superstar'. So, we have given cricketers a new pathway and I want to take credit for that"

Not sure if both can be compared! Wish he hadnt said that.

He is kind of right.Umran is a tennis ball product.

Tennis ball cricket is quite popular here in Jammu.
Umran malik was the most popular tennis ball bowler in Jammu.
He was extremely difficult for batsmen in tennis ball and he had some friendship with samad. Samad recommended him to sunrisers management and he got selected.

Ashwin, Bumrah both are tennis ball products who were picked in the IPL. So sameen Rana is wrong.

Even if Sunrisers followed LQ path, whats wrong in it? TBH a lot of credit goes to Irfan Pathan for recognising and recommending talents from J&K region.

On a side note, really impressed with Irfan's insights and Hindi commentary. He is like a fresh breeze among the garbage nwe have to listen to from Akash Chopras and Md. Kaifs.

Lahore Qalandars are an innovative franchise. They're always on a hunt to find new talents. Haris Rauf is just the most successful one they've found. I guess what Sameen Rana wanted to say is that we would like to take credit for how we find talent and look even India is inspired by our methods.

We need to find more 150kph pacers. Right now it's just Rauf, Shaheen and Naseem,
unfortunately I don't think Hasnain will be able to bowl 150kph with his new action.

But thats not correct. IPL had talents like Bumrah and Ashwin from tennis ball cricket, even before PSL began.

Smaller leagues like TNPL has unearthed the likes of Chakravarthy and Natarajan..

This is zabardasti ka credit lena.

Bumrah and Ashwin are not finds of IPL. We're talking about franchises unearthing new talents. In this regard, PSL's Lahore Qalandars and Peshawar Zalmi are ahead.

But they are the find of IPL. Bumrah made his FC debut after his IPL debut.

Even Ashwin was picked by csk after watching him in the gopalan trophy.

I have already told you about Natarajan and Chakravarthy, both franchise finds.

Another is Kuldeep Yadav. He was picked by MI in 2012, didn't play a game for them, for 2 years before he moved to KKR. Rest is history.

As i said, this is one guy trying to take credit for something he has no association with. IPL had unearthed India level cricketers long before PSL began.

Not entirely true. They might have had that background at an early level but both came through junior cricket pathways from their state and were playing for their domestic side before catching everyone’s attention in IPL.

Yes to some extent applicable to guys like Umran and Natarajan as well.

Pakistan has the culture to pick people randomly on talent. While it is exciting to see freakish talents emerge out of nowhere from Pakistan like we used to see in the 90’s or even now (as a neutral) it is also a result of not having a proper system and pathway.

In India too if someone is identified like this they are still put through some grind.

So if franchises are doing the talent scouting outside of the system it is not exactly something to be proud of even though as I said it does have advantages.

In India you will always play some official cricket if you are that good. The structure is such.

Let me give an example,

In Bengal official cricket starts at SDCA league. Thats sub district level clubs. After that there is the district level. Then junior bengal and then senior league and then ranji.

Most states have similar structures.

So highly unlikely that a player will come without any formal cricket.

Also its compulsory for a player to register with BCCI auctions to play in IPL. For that they need state association NOC and registration. So again unlikely that the person will come with no formal cricket experience.

Looking at Umran, he had played J and K u19s.
