Yep, that's right 7 years and 6 operations after his career was almost ended due to a broken finger in some stupid exhibition match, Tim Paine will be back.

Watching him the in the World XI games reminded me of how easily a career can be lost, felt bad for him that day, but happy he has a chance now.

At least Australia doesn't to watch Wade anymore.

Reports: Tim Paine, Cameron Bancroft called up for Gabba Test

TIM Paine is set to keep for Australia at the Gabba while Matthew Renshaw will make way for Cameron Bancroft, according to reports in Newscorp and Fairfax.

Paine will be named in Australia’s squad for the first two Tests on Friday, having edged out New South Wales’ Peter Nevill and state teammate and Test incumbent Matthew Wade for next week’s Ashes curtain raiser in Brisbane.

The selection of Paine, who played four Tests for Australia in 2010, is a huge surprise considering he has only played one Sheffield Shield match this season. In that match Wade was preferred as keeper.

The 32-year-old scored an unbeaten 71 for Tasmania against Victoria on Wednesday and last week he notched an impressive 52 against England in a tour match at Adelaide Oval.

Although Paine’s average sits at a healthy 35.87 in Test cricket, up until last week he had not passed 50 in a first-class match since the 2013-14 season. It’s as bold a call as selectors have made in a long time.

Nevill was the favourite to replace the under fire Wade at the Gabba, having starred with the bat in the Sheffield Shield last season (611 runs at 68.89) after he himself was axed from the Test side.

However, Nevill’s numbers have been less impressive this season (80 at 26.66) and tellingly he was on the plane home from Brisbane on Thursday after New South Wales’ victory over Queensland.

Renshaw meanwhile has paid the price for a lean run in the Sheffield Shield (70 at 11.66), and reportedly will make way for the in-form Bancroft. The Western Australia opener has been the Shield’s most in-form batsman, with 442 runs to his name at an average of 110.50 and a high score of 228 not out.

In 2015 Bancroft looked destined to win a baggy green when he was called up for a two-Test tour of Bangladesh, only for security concerns to leave him heartbroken. Two years later he is set to finally make his debut.

And Bancroft is not the only WA product in the mix, with Shaun Marsh considered a strong chance to be named at No.6 if selectors abandon plans to pick an all-rounder.

Australia (likely squad): David Warner, Cameron Bancroft, Usman Khawaja, Steve Smith, Peter Handscomb, Shaun Marsh, Tim Paine, Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, Nathan Lyon, Jackson Bird.

They shouldn’t drop Renshaw, atleast give him the first test.

Going to Paine sounds ridiculous, a Pakistan type decision. Keep it between Nevill & Bancroft. He was a good prospect back in the day, but Australia should be considering long term and it’s not as if he’s done wonders in domestic recently.

A very average player but had the knack of taking some blinders every now and then. I remember him taking 6 catches in an ODI vs England in 2009.

The WK stock seems to be at an all-time low for Australia. It is shocking to see that Gilchrist has not been able to inspire a generation.

This is a short-term fix for Australia. They will see how Whiteman is after he recovers from injury.

I feel it is similar to the Adnan Akmal phase in the Pak test team. He did a job but we all knew he wanst good enough. Ironically though it was a broken finger to Adnan that allowed Sarfraz a comeback.

Haddin was the unsung hero of the 2013/14 Ashes. Johnson stole the plaudits, but Haddin's runs were equally pivotal.

This is one area where England can exploit Australia. A poor WK batsman is a significant liability.

What’s wrong with going to Nevill for a short term fix then? I’d consider him much more reliable than Paine at this stage of Paine’s career

clearly they don't have faith in his batting and have gone with the left field choice

Anyone is an upgrade over Wade, the most useless player I have seen from Australia in recent times.

Paine might not be talented in terms of batting or keeping similar to his past countrymen but he is definitely a hard worker and very agile. Not sure how agile he is still after making a comeback post 7 years. But as I said at the start anyone is an upgrade over Wade.

These are reports, so not confirmed. Read somewhere that Darren Lehmann (the coach) has a more recent FC century than Tim Paine.

Odd decision to bring bask Marsh as well. I thought Cartwright was the lead choice for No. 6. Feel bad for Renshaw as well. Was very good against us last year.

Surprised Renshaw may be dropped, seemed like the real deal against us and India

A better squad wouldn't have Paine at 7 with Bancroft to take the gloves, Maxwell instead of Marsh at 6, and someone like Stoinis at 7. Heck, I expect England would choose Marsh over Vince if they had that option with glee.

Bowlers are the best they've got the fact Cummins/Starc are capable of scoring quick runs and the occasional 50 could be lethal.

I expect one or more in Cummins, Lyon and Starc to average more than James Vince or Ballance, if he plays. There's no sign that Stoneman, and Malan will be averaging 40 or more, but I hope they do.

If Root and Cook play like Azhar, they may have a chance but both would need to average at least 60 to be competitive.

Still, I'm always excited when these two face each other.

Recalling Marsh and Paine are poor decisions by Australia. Seems as though they want to go with experience.

This is comical, huge slap on the face of wicket keepers who had been grinding for years, apparently Pains last century was over 7 years ago :))

Time Paine hasn't scored a FC century since 2006... Boof retired in 2007; it's actually true!

Strange selection as he has no batting credentials behind him even in the recent periods he could play (surely a couple of 50s don't get you in the test team these days? )
He doesn't keep for his state and isn't a great gloveman either these days.

So we have younger, better batters, we have at least 2 better keepers...

A lot of pressure on him now as people will be watching to call for a whole new selection panel if he fails.

And Sean Marsh... TTF. Why? Hope he just warms the seat for 2 Tests then Lehmann gets a go.
