Draws in test match cricket has been one of the eventual outcomes of a Test match. While this was relevant in the age old days to rule out timeless tests and enforce the conclusion of a match in a limited time (5 days), time is now ripe to look at the possibility of a draw as a test match outcome.

While the number of draws has reduced considerably because the batsmen tend to play more aggressively and tend to hit a lot more deliveries than leave, teams with defensive mindset on lifeless pitches can still play boring cricket that takes the life and interests out of a test match.

Time to amend rules of test match cricket to make it a more interesting viewing.

The need of the hour is to have rules in place that lets us decide one of 2 possible winners in any given match, unless it is a tie which can be decided by something equivalent as a super over.

After watching today's game, it was super boring to watch a 77 from 200+ deliveries. And if this was not boring for some, a yawning 23 from nearly the same amount of deliveries from Vihari just killed the test match.

These are innings that would even put the likes of Manjrekar, Misbah, Boycott, Dravid, or Gavaskar to shame and has no place in modern day cricket.

One of the things that can be done is basically decide the winner based on comparison of sum total of runs scored by each team across innings. This will force the team batting last to outdo the score posted by the other team, thus inducing some life into a dead match. And as stated, in the unlikely scenario of a match ending in a tie, there can be a super over to decide on the winner.

Pitches must be made more livelier and not a slow wicket such as the one we had in Sydney.

I would welcome your thoughts on how to make test cricket more interesting and preventing any draws.

Kindly leave test cricket alone. This was a great test match. And wonderful batting by Indian batsmen. True test of character.

Agree....should have done a super over to decide the winner :shakib

Not sure many on this forum would like to watch a repeat of the Vihari or Pujara feat. Best to catch up with changing times,

You go watch Bombay Vada Pavs vs Hyderabad Biryanis.

Leave the real sport to us.

Not sure what that is but my point is that it is a complete waste of viewer's time to follow 5 days of attritional cricket with no result to show up.

There must a way to penalize teams for their ultra-defensive strategy or incentivize teams to push for a win.

How about if its a draw each team send out two batsmen. When the first wicket is lost the innings will be over and it will be the opposition teams job to get to the target without losing their only wicket. If the bowling team is taking too long to get the only wicket the innings has to be declared when 50 runs are reached. then it will be the opposition teams job to get those 50 runs in fewer overs without losing a wicket. This will allow the teas to prioritize both preserving the wicket and also scoring at a healthy rate. If they only tuk tuk and get to 50 of 30 overs without losing wicket the other team can be agressive and reach target in 20 overs. Most teams would likely bat agressively to get to the 50 of 5 overs but risking their only wicket. It would be a fast paced mini session.

This seems to be a good suggestion. However this would mean a sixth day of cricket after five toiling days of cricket ended up in a draw.

What a ridiculous suggestion. India did show intent and Rishabh Pant was promoted ahead of Hanuma Vihari to go for the win. Also there was no Ravindra Jadeja, so that made it harder to think of winning once Pant and Pujara got out

With 5 wickets down, effectively 6 and Vihari who was struggling to save his spot in the XI and a woefully out of form with bat Ashwin there and only the 3 pacers to follow, best option was to be safe and go for a draw which Vihari and Ashwin did. We should appreciate them for the application they showed under a tough situation

Draws have become rare but there are some instances where draws feel like wins, this was 1 of them

Delete thread, please, mods.

Stupid idea. Draws are extremely rare anyway and add to the beauty of Test cricket.

This was our first drawn test in 2 years, with last one coming at this ground only due to rain. So there you go.

No thank you! Draw is the beauty of test cricket. I miss test matches like the one we just witnessed between Ind vs Aus.

To all the new Indian posters, if this posters is making threads that means Indian team is doing something right, so don't fall for the bait.

The legend is backkkkkk.

Great thread mate.

PP needs such characters tbh. I think around 2013-14 to 16/17 , PP had a lot of unique characters with differing personalities which made the forum churn out exciting debates lol. Past few years have largely been run of the mill stuff asides from Junaids (who has now lost his touch) and the reinvented Mamoon. And those who have tried to take these new roles either aren’t subtle enough or smart enough to not go overboard and hence end up getting banned.

I miss draws.

They are like God’s second chance to you at times. A saving grace. An opportunity to stay alive in an important series or to hold the lead.

My feeling is that the modern day test cricket is very ruthless with the teams that start off a test match at a disadvantage be it being the foreign team or having lost the toss. Most series end up with usually the home team squashing the foreign team. Then you have the online trolls, YouTubers, ex cricketers ripping apart the losing team as if they surrendered the country. Draws kind of saved teams from that humiliating feeling of being squashed.

No excuses for the lack of draws other than the fact that teams just can’t defend nowadays. At least the Top 3 in the batting order should have the ability to eat out a lot of overs. No team out there has that kind of a top 3. The typical test match opener doesn’t exist anymore. Everybody is a Sehwag wannabe.

I celebrate winning mentality.
But draws aren’t always a proof of negative mindset. Draws like India in Sydney last time around could be a proof of tremendous character and courage as well.
