Time, patience & excuses have run out – Ramiz Raja, Babar Azam & Saqlain Mushtaq must face the music

Many thanks to Markhor for his hard-hitting review of Pakistan's disastrous home Test series against England which ended in a historic 0-3 whitewash in Pakistan.

Excuses over introspection

For years Pakistani cricketers lamented being unable to play on home pitches in front of home fans. It became an easy excuse for our ills - a convenient way of avoiding serious introspection. Against Australia and now England, Pakistan were outfought and outthought on home pitches in front of home fans. The excuses have run out after Pakistan’s first ever home Test series whitewash in Pakistan.

The sorry state of Pakistan’s bowling and baffling selections

It’s hard to recall a weaker or more inexperienced Pakistani Test bowling attack. The 'Pindi Test saw the folly of gambling on three debutants. Without Shaheen Shah Afridi, Pakistan’s only world-class pacer, one wonders why a seasoned replacement wasn’t selected such as Mohammad Abbas who performed well in the QEA Trophy, taking 18 wickets at 24 apiece. Babar picking four specialist bowlers in the 1st and 3rd Test smacked of negativity, and when Faheem Ashraf bowled just of one over in England’s 1st innings in Karachi, he virtually reduced Pakistan to a three-man attack.

More baffling was Zahid Mehmood’s selection. A cursory glance at his FC career should’ve raised red flags with a career economy around 4 RPO, and an average of 45.76 in this season’s QEA Trophy. He’s not even Sindh’s first-choice spinner, so what possessed Pakistan to debut him against a Bazball-inspired England line-up ?

It was a question of “justice” according to Saqlain Mushtaq, claiming it would’ve been unfair to debut Abrar Ahmed, the leading FC wicket-taker this season, ahead of someone who’s waited longer to debut in Zahid. Such selection rationales are more befitting a *school playground* than an international cricket team!

Babar Azam’s captaincy and impact-less batting

For all of Babar’s prodigious batting talent, he’s shown no growth as a captain internationally or domestically. His Pakistan captaincy struggles come as no surprise to Karachi Kings fans who saw him lead the team to 9 defeats from 10 PSL matches this year. Despite repeated claims of “learning from mistakes” – Ben Stokes ran circles around Babar with intelligent field placings, smart bowling changes and above all, prizing victory over merely avoiding defeat.

Babar claimed he requested a turning track in Rawalpindi which begs the following questions:

a) Why did you then select only one specialist spinner?
b) When you’ve two of the quickest fast bowlers in world cricket in Naseem Shah and Haris Rauf, why not request a surface more supportive of seam bowling? Pakistan beat South Africa in 2021, with their intimidating pace battery, on sporting wickets.

When England blazed 500 on the opening day of the series, Babar had no Plan B. When England were on the ropes in Multan and Karachi, Pakistan failed to cheaply remove the tail and conceded pivotal 1st innings leads.

Meanwhile the stats will show Babar was the leading run-scorer for Pakistan. Babar undoubtedly carries a heavy burden, but too often failed to convert fifties into big hundreds. Poor dismissals in Multan and Karachi meant Pakistan squandered good positions and suffered dreadful collapses of 8-60, 7-142 and 7-52. Ultimately while Babar’s numbers look good, his runs didn’t impact the series outcome.

Mohammad Rizwan’s worrying form

Vice-captain Rizwan failed to even reach 50 in a series where his technique was again exposed against movement. After a dismal T20 World Cup and a lean run with the bat this year, Rizwan may soon find himself benched.

Some respite - The Positives from this series

Saud Shakeel looked the part as a quality batsman with four fifties in a misfiring batting line-up. However, he too was guilty of poor dismissals when set. Agha Salman scored two fifties but batted too low to provide much impact. Abrar Ahmed immediately proved the folly of Zahid’s selection with a 10-fer on debut, and was easily Pakistan’s most potent bowler.

The fish rots from the head

Ramiz Raja made brash claims upon becoming PCB Chairman about resetting Pakistan cricket’s GPS. After four consecutive home defeats, our Test cricket is now located in the dumps.

Ramiz also bears culpability for this debacle by granting Babar complete authority in a misguided effort to mould him into a 21st Century Imran Khan. Worse was failing to appoint internationally proven coaches to serve as a check, with Saqlain acting as a rubber-stamp. While Pakistan struggles to produce quality Test cricketers and our youngsters in dire need of red-ball exposure, Ramiz recently launched yet another T20 competition – the Pakistan Junior League. His public comments are also deeply unhelpful. Another defeat to New Zealand, and we may see a different chairman in addition to a new captain and coach.

Quality writeup as always summarizing everything so well.

Saqlain's so called justice system and questionable selections has resulted in a first ever whitewash for Pakistan at home.

Both Saqlain and Babar doing their jobs first time at any decent level after Babar's 2012 U19 captaincy stint and poor PSL campaign. You cant have two inexperienced people (In their specific roles) leading the think thank, irrespective of the results its just not the right process to take things forward. Babar should have been given an experienced coach (Atleast at domestic level).

Great review.

Though will anything actually change.

Great write-up.

I have been harping on that our domestic players needs to be rewarded for their performances else what is the point of domestics. We pick people from our T20 success who has had no 4 day experience and expect them to perform against international test side.

Our recent QEA and Pakistan Cup performers are as follows. Time to reward them.

The question now is how many of our domestic performers would be given a chance in our international team?

Some young players that standout for me are Hurraira, Saim Ayub, Hassan Khan and Mubasir Khan. It will be premature to throw them in the deep end when our team is in a bit of crisis. For me they are literally our future players with a long career ahead of them. They should be transitioned into our team steadily when the team spirits are a little high and in home condition not in some world tournament.

Unfortunately it seems like Babar is going nowhere.. he will comtinue fo lead Pak, and lead us to failures, irrespective of the format, with his poor captaincy..

There were rumors of Ramiz Raja getting sacked..but now geo is reporting tht no summary has been sent to PM, to change Ramiz Raja.. so hardly any hopes there too..

Only Saqlain could be changed after NZ series, as his contract is ending in Feb

Babar should get one more chance against NZ but Saqlain has to go ASAP

Ramiz's post is a political appointment so the only way he leaves is if the government decides he should go

The most humiliating defeat in Pakistan’s Test history.

For context, England were whitewashed at home in a 2+ series back in 1984 against the West Indies, but that team had Garner, Marshall, Holding, Clive Lloyd, Richards and Greenridge.

This has to rank right up there as the worst home whitewashes of all time

Even the greatest team in history the West Indies team of the 70's and 80's were never able to whitewash Pakistan at home.

Excellent review. Babar needs to go along with the coaching staff. They are all guilty of this pathetic performance. I am still baffled by the selection of zahid mehmood.

Absolutely dumb captain, coach and selector. I am praying they lose 2-0 to NZ.

NZ are usually very nice to us. They will gift us a Test victory and save the careers of Babar the captain and Rizwan his deputy like they usually do.

True gentlemen they are.

First NZ Test starts in 6 days. What are the chances of any real change?

The "world class" Babar is not a test player. For now he has to play due to a lack of test quality players. Even more concerning are the reports that Najam Sethi will be replacing Ramiz very soon.

We haven't beaten NZ in a Test series in 11 years. I wouldn't be surprised if we achieve another record under Babar and lose three consecutive home Test series.

Very good write up.

Other than Abrar, who was simply brilliant and hugely impressive, Saud Shakeel and Salman Agha did look good. Agha in particular appears to me as very underrated by the Pakistanis. He impressed me in the earlier games as well when he played. Pakistan should look at a bigger role for him in both tests and ODIs.

The concern is that if Pakistan defeat New Zealand then so many of the issues will be swept under the carpet.

I really do hope that the shortcomings of the 3-0 defeat against England are not overlooked and forgotten.

Pakistan's Test team is appalling - there are several issues that need addressing and people need to be moved on from their roles.

Saj, Pakistan don't look like drawing the series against New Zealand much less winning the series ! I don't think they'll have the chance to sweep any issues under the carpet.

Unless we play an outright minnow, I'm seriously concerned at where our next Test win is coming from. We saw at Karachi Kings this year how Babar couldn't arrest his team's slide.

Probably 1 change with some undeserving TTF being drafted into squad to replace Azhar. Mo wasim is one of the worst selectors ever so don't expect this clueless selector to grow a pair and make meaningful changes.

When the spirits are high pakistan don't pick new comers this was a perfect chance for them to be picked in a two back to back home series.Mubasir should definitely be in the test squad alongside Hurraira and Saim should be in the odi and t20 squad.

He didn't bowl much and looks suspect against pace.

I can easily think of 5 changes that need to be made.

We can cry, shout and banging our heads on the wall but nothing will happen as usual. All these are crooks and they always help each other.

This thread was created on Dec 2022 and nearly its Dec 2024 to drop this big boy Babar Azam after a failure of 10 matches and 20 inns failing to score a 50 + losing Asia cup + not qualifying for 2023 CWC semis + losing to zimbabwe + losing to USA + losing to Ireland + not qualifying for the T2OWC semis .... And even without the Chairman Ramiz raja and coach Saqlain Mushtaq, shows how PCB and PCT runs...... Babar Azam such a mighty elephant in the room, with the small amount of success that he has been backed like he is Sachin
