Tehreek-i-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) Chief Khadim Hussain Rizvi has been taken into custody by law enforcement agencies, reports say.

A family member of Rizvi confirmed to DawnNewsTV that the TLP chief has been taken into custody.

“He was arrested from his hujra in Lahore,” a family member of Rizvi told Samaa TV.

Rizvi's son, Saad, while talking to 7 News said along with his father, all district leaders of TLP have been arrested.

When contacted, Punjab information and law ministers said they did not know about any such action being taken against Rizvi.

According to police sources, a crackdown is currently underway against TLP leaders in several major cities. At least 30 of the party's workers have been arrested from various parts of the capital, the sources told DawnNewsTV.

Around a 100 police personnel have been deployed at Faizabad interchange, where the TLP had last year staged a 20-day long sit-in.

At least 59 TLP leaders and workers have been picked up from the Rawalpindi area, and reports say raids are still being carried out to arrest more activists of the party.

The district authorities in Rawalpindi have issued detainment orders for TLP divisional leader Inayatul Haq. According to the notification, Haq will be detained in a jail for 15 days.

Khadim Rizvi had given a call to observe martyrs’ day on November 25, and had asked the party workers and supporters to gather at Faizabad on the day

The reports of his arrest come weeks after the TLP led three-day protests across the country against the acquittal of Aasia Bibi, a Christian woman whose blasphemy conviction was overturned by the Supreme Court at the end of last month.

The religiopolitical party had agreed to end the nationwide protest sit-ins after reaching an agreement with the federal and Punjab governments under which the latter agreed to initiate the legal process to put Aasia Bibi's name on the Exit Control List (ECL) and refrain from objecting to review of the court judgement.

Gutsy move, let's see how their followers react. Hopefully they remain calm.

Government might well be able to handle TLP albeit with some violence but the problem becomes severe when other groups start scoring their own points.
Some, like Noon leak ,will taunt that if PTI can hold a dharna then why not TLP? ( of course there is no comparison as PTI's protests were always peaceful and have different demands)

Some other religious parties will try to prove their relevance by condemning his arrest and by linking it with Asia Bibi case and blasphemy.

There will be some confusing, equivocal narratives from some quarters that they not only condemn Khadim Rizvi but also government crackdown on protesters. Some will give a bizarre logic that writ of the state should be established, nevertheless, the issue should be handled through dialogue and not force.

If government uses force they will condemn it and if government uses dialogue they will still denigrate the government.
That's how duplicitous our political class is.

But i don't think the state can live with any more leniency towards these miscreants, unless it hangs Asia. Some violence, because of state force to suppress these fanatics seems inevitable at this stage.

I already see a lot of propaganda on Fb and Twitter by N league, Jamaat and JUI affiliated people.

The issue for them is not Khadim Rizvi. They only consider this matter a blasphemy.

The opposition is already up in arms against the govt trying everything to destabilise the govt. Tough times ahead of Imran Khan , hoping he comes out on top as always .

TLP head Khadim Rizvi taken into 'protective custody', scores of workers arrested in crackdown

Tehreek-i-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) chief Khadim Hussain Rizvi was taken into "protective custody" by police from Lahore as law enforcement agencies launched a massive crackdown against workers of TLP and Tehreek-i-Labbaik Ya Rasool Allah (TLYRA) on Friday night.

"Khadim Hussain Rizvi has been taken into protective custody by police and shifted to a guest house," said Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry late Friday night, confirming reports of the incendiary leader's arrest via Twitter. High/red alert had been generated to heighten the security in the provincial capital.

The crackdown came ahead of Rizvi's call to party members to observe martyrs’ day on November 25 (today). He had asked workers and supporters to gather at Faizabad in the federal capital — the same venue where the party had staged a weeks-long sit-in last year that had virtually paralysed the federal capital and led to several people losing their lives.

Law enforcement personnel on Friday night also took in custody TLYRA head Dr Asif Ashraf Jalali.

Soon after the news of the arrest of the two clerics spread, hundreds of activists of the two parties took to the streets and blocked many roads for traffic.

A constable was seriously injured at Multan Road where the violent activists clashed with police.

Following the unrest and severe clashes, Rangers reached Lahore, taking control of city’s major roads. Prior to the agitation, a police officer said, hundreds of trained police commandos and personnel of the anti-riot force were dispatched to the Multan Road after the information that violent activists of the TLP had held a senior police officer — Iqbal Town SP Syed Ali — hostage along with his guards.

Mass arrests
The district authorities in Rawalpindi issued detainment orders for TLP divisional leader Inayatul Haq. According to the notification, Haq will be detained in a jail for 15 days.

According to a correspondent in Sialkot, police arrested Sufi Mohammad Rafiq, district emir of the TLP, and four main activists of the party, identified as Saleem Shahid, Mehbub Hassan, Nasir Dogar and Syed Kaleemul Hassan Shah.

On Saturday, security officials said that since last night, at least 30 of the party's workers have been arrested from various parts of the capital.

Around 100 police personnel have been deployed at Faizabad interchange.

According to police sources, 143 TLP workers have so far been arrested from Rawalpindi, 18 from Attock, 55 from Jhelum and five from Chakwal, taking the total arrests from the four cities to 221.

More than a hundred arrests were also made in Karachi, according to Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) East Azfar Mahesar, who visited Numaish Chowrangi to brief police officials.

'Nothing to do with Aasia Bibi protest'
"The action was prompted by TLP's refusal to withdraw its call for protest on November 25. It’s to safeguard public life, property and order," Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry shared on Twitter on Friday night.

The arrest "has to do nothing with Asia Bibi case", Chaudhry said, adding the TLP had insisted on coming to Rawalpindi "refusing [the government's] proposal for alternative arrangements".

"The TLP has become a continuous threat to the life and properties of the citizens and is doing politics under the guise of religion ... the situation is fully under control, people should remain peaceful and fully cooperate with authorities," he said in a tweet in Urdu.

The minister said the government "did it best" to convince the party against convening for the protest, "but they refused every offer and started to provoke violence".

"State is responsible to defend finality and respect of Holy Prophet PBUH. Law shall take its course and it cannot be left to individuals," Chaudhry concluded.

Reports of arrest
Prior to Chaudhry's tweets, a family member of Rizvi had confirmed to DawnNewsTV that the TLP chief had been taken into custody. “He was arrested from his hujra in Lahore,” a family member of Rizvi told Samaa TV.

Rizvi's son, Saad, while talking to 7 News said along with his father, all district leaders of TLP had been arrested.

The Punjab information and law ministers, however, had said they did not know about any such action being taken against Rizvi.

Examine: Is TLP here to stay?

TLP leader Pir Afzal Qadri in a video message had corroborated that police "was raiding their mosques in order to arrest leaders".

Aasia Bibi protests
The reports of the arrests come weeks after the TLP led three-day protests across the country against the acquittal of Aasia Bibi, a Christian woman whose blasphemy conviction was overturned by the Supreme Court at the end of last month.

The demonstrators during the protests had termed the chief justice “liable to be killed” and had called for a rebellion against the army chief “because he is a non-Muslim”.

This had led to Prime Minister Imran Khan issuing a stern warning to the agitators and telling them: "Do not clash with the state".

“Do not take us [to a situation] where we are compelled to take [strict] action,” the prime minister had said in a televised speech.

Two days later, however, the TLP had agreed to end the nationwide protest sit-ins after reaching an agreement with the federal and Punjab governments under which the latter agreed to initiate the legal process to put Aasia Bibi's name on the Exit Control List (ECL) and refrain from objecting to review of the court judgement.

The TLP, in turn, had only offered an apology "if it hurt the sentiments of or inconvenienced anyone without reason".

One year to Faizabad
In November 2017, TLP workers demanding the resignation of then law minister Zahid Hamid had staged a weeks-long sit-in at the Faizabad interchange that had virtually paralysed the federal capital and led to several people losing their lives.

On November 21 of the same month, the apex court had taken notice of the sit-in and directed the defence and interior secretaries to submit a detailed report on the matter.

Days later, the then PML-N government had launched against the protesters an operation which, when failed, had forced the authorities to cave and Hamid to resign.

The Supreme Court yesterday reserved its verdict on the suo motu case over the Faizabad sit-in. The reserved verdict pertains to a variety of issues stemming from TLP's infamous sit-in, including its party registration as well as its violent protest.

Lahore court reserves verdict on petition seeking sedition charges against Khadim Rizvi

A Lahore sessions court on Saturday reserved its verdict on a petition seeking sedition charges against Tehreek-i-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) chief Khadim Hussain Rizvi and others for their diatribe against the judiciary, armed forces and other state institutions.

Filed by advocate Abdullah Malik, the petition states that the station house officer (SHO) of Civil Lines police station in Lahore had failed to file a first information report (FIR) against Rizvi and company after they had incited the masses to violence and stage mutiny against the state, in the aftermath of the apex court's acquittal of Aasia Bibi from blasphemy charges.

Take a look: TLP chief Khadim Hussain Rizvi taken into 'protective custody', information minister announces

The Civil Lines police, in today's hearing, submitted its report and told the court that an FIR had already been lodged against Rizvi under Sections 291, 290, 186, 353, 427 and 188 of the Pakistan Penal Code as well as Section 16 of the Maintenance of Public Order.

At this, the petitioner's counsel insisted that sedition charges against the TLP leader should also be added to the FIR.

Additional Sessions Judge Rai Mohammad Kharal, following the conclusion of the arguments, reserved the verdict on the petition.

Rizvi is currently in the "protective custody" of Punjab police after being arrested late on Friday, according to Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry.

Very good news.

Good to see protestors were dispersed at once in Karachi.

This man and his goons are poison and need to be kept under arrest.

What a stupid argument. What an idiotic post.

It's like saying, let's not arrest anyone for the crimes they commit until we bring the Karachi attackers to justice. That makes no sense.

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Thursday ordered the district election commissioner of Lahore to personally deliver a second notice to Khadim Hussain Rizvi, the chief of Tehreek-i-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP), in a case regarding his party's registration and funding.

A five-member commission, headed by Chief Election Commissioner retired Justice Sardar Muhammad Raza, heard the case today.

Neither Rizvi, who was taken under "protective custody" last week, nor his counsel appeared before the commission.

At this, the ECP issued another notice to the TLP chief and instructed the district election commissioner to ensure that the orders are obliged to.

The ECP adjourned the case till December 5.

The case against TLP was initiated after the Supreme Court lambasted the ECP earlier this month for registering a party that had disrupted life in the twin cities last year.

The top court had expressed surprise that the right-wing party had been registered with a National Identity Card for Overseas Pakistanis (Nicop) by an individual residing in the United Arab Emirates.

Supreme Court was also amazed that the ECP's director general of law could not even answer if the person, who applied for TLP's registration as a political party, was a Pakistani citizen, a dual national or a foreign citizen.

ECP had also admitted that the body had allowed TLP to contest the general elections but the party had failed to provide details of the funds that it used to finance its campaign.

TLP leader Khadim Hussain Rizvi booked under treason, terrorism charges: information minister

Information minister Fawad Chaudhry on Saturday announced that Tehreek-i-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) chief Khadim Hussain Rizvi has been booked under treason and terrorism charges at Lahore's Civil Lines police station.

The minister was briefing the media regarding last week's countrywide crackdown against TLP leaders and workers at a press conference in Islamabad.

Legal action has also been initiated against other top leaders of the religiopolitical party, Chaudhry announced. Pir Afzal Qadri has been booked under treason and terrorism charges in Gujrat, Inayatul Haq Shah has been booked under treason and anti-terrorism laws in Rawalpindi, and Hafiz Farooqul Hassan has been booked under similar charges as well.

On November 23, Rizvi was taken into "protective custody" by police from Lahore as law enforcement agencies launched a massive crackdown against workers of TLP and Tehreek-i-Labbaik Ya Rasool Allah (TLYRA).

Chaudhry revealed that a total of 2,899 people were taken into 'protective custody' from across Punjab while 139 persons from Sindh and 126 from Islamabad were also taken into custody.

He said the government would allow protests that protect the rights of people but that "the state will not remain silent on a protest that violates the rights of people and is beyond the ambit of the Constitution and law."

The TLP through its protests — starting with its 20-day sit-in at Faizabad interchange in November last year — caused harm to people's lives and properties despite government efforts to convince the party to protest peacefully, the minister said.

A joint operation was thus launched against the party in which all institutions and intelligence agencies participated, Chaudhry said. He thanked the opposition parties and the country's media "who went out of their way" to support the state during the crackdown.

Last week's crackdown against TLP had come ahead of Rizvi's call to party members to observe martyrs’ day on November 25. He had asked workers and supporters to gather at Faizabad in the federal capital — the same venue where the party had staged a weeks-long sit-in last year that had virtually paralysed the federal capital and led to several people losing their lives.

Rizvi and his fellow party leaders are accused of staging violent protests, passing incendiary remarks against the judiciary and the prime minister as well as provoking the military to stage a mutiny — all in the aftermath of the Supreme Court's acquittal of Aasia Bibi in a blasphemy case.

Another clown goes behind the bars.

Insult to clowns. At least clowns are there to make people laugh, this guy is there to spread evil, chaos and misery. Hope he gets it big time.

Great news. But I have a question, will he be prosecuted under the military courts or the civilian criminal justice courts?

I just hope he is locked up for good and not released like the lal masjid mullah. These parasites need to be squashed. If we want to be like China one thing we have to learn is to put away anyone that challenges the state.

Hope he is tortured in jail and never set free. Make example of this Hate Mongering Mullah.

PML-N criticises govt’s move to book TLP leaders on sedition, terrorism charges

Criticising the government’s move to try Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) leadership under sedition and terrorism charges, PML-N senior leader Rana Sanaullah said on Saturday that framing ‘harsh’ charges on the TLP leaders will only aggravate the entire situation.

In a statement issued hours after Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry announced that Khadim Hussain Rizvi and Pir Afzal Qadri among other TLP leaders and activists have been charged with treason and terrorism, the former Punjab law minister said ‘this mishandling of such a sensitive issue can backfire’.

Interestingly, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz leaders had strongly criticised the government for letting the TLP miscreants off the hook with a mere agreement in the backdrop of the claims made by Prime Minister Imran Khan, who during a public address vowed to take an uncompromising position for establishing the writ of the state.
Sanaullah claimed that even during the dharna days, he advised the government to tread carefully as this was a ‘serious and a sensitive issue’. He said that they were amongst those who advised the government to not use force and today’s move is somewhat tantamount to using force against the TLP.

According to the PML-N leader, the situation could have been tackled in ‘some other fashion’. He claimed the TLP was created to damage PML-N and benefit PTI, adding that those who created the faction are now shutting it down as the purpose was served.

Sanaullah said the government needs to understand that there are some people in this faction who genuinely believe in the cause of TLP. He said that to find a wise solution for this problem, the government should have taken all the stakeholders into confidence.

Meanwhile, Awami National Party (ANP) spokesperson Zahid Khan lauded the government’s decision to register cases against the TLP leadership. He, however, criticised the ruling party for supporting the TLP and employing similar tactics against the elected government in the past.

In a statement, he said that PM Imran Khan-led Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s attack on the parliament and siege of the PTV headquarters in Islamabad were acts of terrorism. The ANP leader also questioned motive behind distributing cash among the TLP protesters who had shut down Faizabad interchange in 2014.

It seems, he added, the state institutions have now understood they have to restrain mobs similar to TLP.

Zahid Khan urged the government, PM Imran and the institutions to apologise to the nation on supporting the TLP in the past.

He reiterated that the ANP believes in non-violent politics, and added that the freedom of press and supremacy of parliament are important. Zahid urged the information minister to respond to the notion that the media was facing unannounced censorship in the country.

As many people stated at the time and now we can see , the Nooras would have used the situation to blackmail the govt. Just look at the what Rana is saying and what NS said.

Werent they critical of IK because Rizvi wasnt arrested over Asia Bibi. No wonder no Nooras have come on this thread.

They just need an excuse to bash IK and PTI. Rana Sana came up with 2 opposite statements within few days changing his whole stance just to bash IK :))

They should ask him to join the PTI as a religious minister

Could become a good asset for the state

Oi Mamoon where you at?

I thought PTI leadership was spineless and gutless in the face of extremists, no?

Why don't you come witness the "utter embarrassment and shame" that PTI and IK are inflicting on themselves?

On my Facebook feed I’m seeing news that one of the top scholar has passed away in prison. He was one of thousands imprisoned for supporting TLP.

I personally think this is bad move. Government should sort out tlp in their own language and get ulama’s on board and defeat TLP and it’s stance in the court. In this asia bibi case.

The thousands they have arrested will eventually return to their house and will be more upbeat against gov.

This is impossible to achieve and quite utopian. You cannot debate or reason with these elements because they dont want to listen. They dont go out on streets for deen.

The thousands they have arrested will eventually return to their house and will be more upbeat against gov.

Govt is shifting them to jails aways from their districts to make them suffer and isn't in the mood to release them quickly from what i heard they are categorized based on damage caused by them and only those who were just standing there as tamashis will be released in first phase.

Oi Mamoon where you at?

I thought PTI leadership was spineless and gutless in the face of extremists, no?

Why don't you come witness the "utter embarrassment and shame" that PTI and IK are inflicting on themselves?

We know who the utter embarrassment is, and who doesnt have any shame.

The Supreme Court on Wednesday reached a verdict on a suo motu notice of the 2017 Faizabad sit-in staged by the Tehreek-i-Labbaik Pak*is*tan (TLP).

The apex court had issued notices to the Attorney General of Pakistan, the Inspector General of Police for Islamabad, the secretary interior, the secretary defence as well as the secretary of the Election Commission of Pakistan.

The leaders of the TLP were taken into custody by the authorities after they launched another sit-in, this time against the backdrop of Oct 31, 2018, Supreme Court judgement of acquitting blasphemy accused Aasia Bibi.

An anti-terrorism court in Lahore has already extended till Feb 8 the judicial remand of TLP leader Khadim Hussain Rizvi, who is facing several charges for damaging public property and vandalism during violent protests staged after the apex court’s judgement in the blasphemy case.

Case history
On Nov 22, 2018 a two-judge Supreme Court bench comprising Justice Qazi Faez Isa and Justice Musheer Alam had reserved the judgement and closed the hearing of the case that was initiated on a suo motu on Nov 21, 2017 ─ after dishing out severe criticism to the attorney general, media regulator and other stakeholders.

The court took up the case after taking notice of the traffic congestion arising out of the sit-in and summoned a report from the ministries of interior and defence, Intelligence Bureau and Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI).

While initiating the case, the court regretted the use of abusive, filthy and provocative language by the leaders of the sit-in and held that this tended to promote enmity.

The legal observers believe that in its judgement the bench may come up with certain guidelines for ensuring that normal life of citizens was not disrupted due to such protests and about the role of the law enforcement agencies and the media.

The issue cropped up when, during the hearing of a case in 2017, the same bench noticed an application seeking adjournment on behalf of senior counsel Mohammad Ibrahim Satti, who was representing petitioner Sher Jamal.

The application for adjournment was moved by Advocate on Record Syed Rifaqat Hussain Shah on the grounds that the counsel could not reach the courthouse because he lived in the area that had been blocked off due to the sit-in.

At this, the court sought the assistance of Deputy Attorney General Sohail Mehmood, who was in attendance, and asked him whether highways and roads could be blocked.

Mehmood replied that he himself was facing tremendous difficulties in reaching the court. He had left his home early in the morning (at about 6.30am) to reach the court in time, he added.

In the order that followed, the apex court regretted that Islamabad and Rawalpindi were being held hostage by a few ‘miscreants’ while the state functionaries appeared to be negotiating with them rather than clearing the way for the public who were being denied access to courts, schools, and places of work, etc.

The court said that people taking part in the sit-in and their leaders were ostensibly advocating a religious cause but had not moved the courts, including the Federal Shariat Court. They were taking the law into their hands and were sowing divisions (‘tafarruqu’) and differences (‘ikhtalafu’) against the clear proclamations by Almighty Allah in Surah Ash-Shura (42) ayat 13 and Surah Al-Imran (3) ayat 103 and ayat 105.

Before reserving its ruling for a final judgement, the Supreme Court had also asked Attorney General Anwar Mansoor to furnish a report on behalf of the federal government about the mandate of ISI.

The directives were issued when a sealed envelope was produced before the court, the contents of which were not even shared with DAG Mehmood.

Justice Isa then regretted that the premier spying agency had only enclosed a copy of one of the apex court’s orders in the sealed envelope.

The attorney general, however, said he would furnish the reply in writing, which should be treated as classified. That report was later submitted to the court.

How it happened

Daily life in Islamabad was disrupted for 20 days (from Oct 2 to Nov 27, 2017) when protesters belonging to religiopolitical parties ─ including the TLP, Tehreek-i-Labbaik Ya Rasool Allah (TLYRA), the Tehreek-i-Khatm-i-Nabuwwat, and the Pakistan Sunni Tehreek ─ occupied the Faizabad Interchange which connects Rawalpindi and Islamabad through the Islamabad Expressway and Murree Road, both of which are the busiest roads in the twin cities.

The agitators believe that during the passage of Elections Act 2017, the Khatm-i-Nabuwwat oath was deliberately modified as part of a larger conspiracy. The amendment to the oath was deemed a 'clerical error' by the government and was subsequently rectified through an Act of Parliament.

The government had attempted to negotiate with the protesters to end the sit-in several times, but failed each time. Finally, it launched an operation to disperse the protesters, in which at least six people were killed and scores others injured. After the botched operation, the government decided to call in the army for help. When the army refused, the government turned towards negotiations with the protesters once more, and accepted a number of their demands in return for ending the protest.

Poor man, just another tool of establishment who used him as a tissue paper and when they discarded him he got mad. Its our history, not to blame him but peoples like ZA bhutto Altaf Hussain and many more high profile peoples were trapped & ditched, and when they realized what going to happen with them they became outspoken against their fathers. Only Dr AQ Khan was the person who was sensible and took the side from them.

ATC charges Khadim Hussain Rizvi, others in case against violent protests

An anti-terrorism court (ATC) in Lahore on Tuesday formally charged Tehreek-i-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) chief Khadim Hussain Rizvi and others in a case concerning the violent protests initiated by TLP following a Supreme Court verdict acquitting Aasia Bibi last year.

ATC-I Judge Arshad Hussain Bhutta announced the charges brought against the religio-political leaders. Strict security arrangements had been made for the proceedings.

A total of 26 suspects — including Rizvi and TLP patron-in-chief Pir Afzal Qadri — were issued copies of the challan. Some of the suspects appeared in court today along with counsels Tahir Minhas and Nasir Minhas.

Additionally, the ATC issued summonses for the witnesses for the next hearing, which will be held tomorrow (November 13).

Violent protests had erupted in different parts of the country soon after the Supreme Court's verdict acquitting Aasia Bibi was announced, as activists of TLP and other religious parties took to the streets and blocked major roads and intersections through sit-ins and by putting up barricades.

The case against the accused had been registered at the Civil Lines police station in Lahore on charges of sedition and terrorism for delivering anti-state speeches and inciting violence during the three-day protests against Aasia Bibi’s acquittal.

The FIR against the accused referenced Sections 290, 291, 353, 427, 186 and 188 of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC), Section 6 of the Sound System Punjab Ordinance, 2015 and Section 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act, 1997

The initial protest was disbanded after the government provided assurances. Rizvi was taken into protective custody by police on Nov 23, 2018 amidst a massive crackdown against TLP workers. The crackdown had come two days before the TLP said it would resume its protest against Aasia Bibi's acquittal.

The ATC will take up the case tomorrow (November 13) and has decided to hear the case on a daily basis.

He said police reached Chak 58-GB bridge where they tried to stop the caravan by showing them the order of the deputy commissioner issued on Aug 21 last. However, he said, they put up resistance and marched towards Chak 124-GB.

Did anyone see Rizvis yesterday’s showing at Allama Iqbal Mazaar.

Big and well organised event. Seems like government is all good with Rizvi and his party

TLP Dharna at Faizabad, Islamabad

Things not looking good in Islamabad. Surprisingly their main leader is hiding somewhere but this is a charged crowed.

Heavy deployment of security personnel in twin cities as TLP activists continue protest

Islamabad administration deployed 3,113 security personnel including police, Rangers and Frontier Corps at Faizabad – where supporters of Tehreek-i-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) have gathered to protest against publication of blasphemous caricatures of Prophet Mohammad (Peace Be Upon Him) in France.

The rally in Rawalpindi, which attracted up to 5,000 people on Sunday, continued today, with around a thousand protesters gathered at the roadblock preventing them from entering the capital.

A notification, dated November 15, issued by the office of Islamabad Senior Superintendent of Police (Operations) detailed security arrangements in the capital to prevent violent incidents from taking place.

"It is expected that participants in the rally could go violent and proceed towards French embassy by breaking their promises with the district administration," the notification read. Senior officers of Islamabad's administration had approached TLP leaders yesterday after they sought security cover for Sunday's protest rally.

The officers had tried to convince TLP leaders and organisers of the rally to call it off due to the prevailing virus situation, said sources, adding: “Covid-19 is spreading all over the country, including Islamabad.”

In the notification issued by SSP Operations, security officials have been directed to ensure the security of citizens, key government installations, maintenance of public order and dismantling terror attacks.

Mobile signals remained suspended in Islamabad and Rawalpindi for a third day and roads leading to Faizabad Interchange as well as entry points of Islamabad were blocked by placing containers.

According to a Dawn correspondent, the law and order situation in the twin cities was under control and there were reports of mobile signals being restored in some areas.

The situation is starkly different from what it was on Sunday when Liaquat Bagh presented a scene of a battleground as police and stick-wielding TLP activists clashed throughout the day.

Riot police had to resort to teargas shelling against the stone-pelting protesters who had gathered on the call of TLP chief Khadim Hussain Rizvi to denounce the publication of blasphemous caricatures in Charlie Hebdo magazine and remarks about Islam and terrorism by French President Emmanuel Macron.

During the clashes, dozens of police personnel, including Waris Khan police station SHO Abdul Aziz, and several TLP activists were injured and shifted to hospitals.

The city’s 24 entry points were sealed with shipping containers, including Soan Bridge, Kutchery Chowk, Mareer Chowk, Liaquat Bagh, Shamasabad, Rehmanabad, Double Road, Adiala Road, Chur Chowk and I.J. Principal Road. As many as 16 entry points to Islamabad were also blocked.
