Which are the top 3 teams of this millenium?

IMO it is :-

Tests:-

Australia
South Africa
India

Odis:-

Australia
India
South Africa

For me its more of an era based thing than a whole team.
McWarne Aussies ('00-'07) - Tests and ODIs #1
Smith's SA ('08-'12) - Tests #2
Strauss' Eng ('10-'12) - Tests #3

In ODIs
Dhoni's India (from '07-'15) - definitely #2 ODI side with consistently good tournament form, debuting several ODI greats (Kohli, Rohit, Dhawan)

Smith-ABD SA (from '06-'15) - #3 in ODIs. always top quality ODI side. Good tourney form (semis and/or domination in all big tourneys except CT 09). Debuted LOI greats/era defining players like Amla, AbD, Steyn, Morkel

In tests, India also had a great period between 2007 to 2011 till WC when they won series in England and New Zealand and drew against a strong SA side both home and away. They only lost in Australia 2007 which could have easily been a drawn series if not for umpiring blunders and one in Sri Lanka 2008.

Tests- South Africa
ODIs- Australia
T20Is- West Indies

However, the stage is set for Pakistan to become a dominant dynasty (all formats) within the next decade.

Agree with this except I would rate India higher than SA in Tests.

Pakistan too definitely deserved a place in one of the lists, but sadly, the catches weren't taken. :amir:

Tests: South Africa without much doubt.
ODIs: Between India and Australia, think Australia edges this so far.
T20s: I don't think West Indies... they have won 2 cups but a lot of teams can say they are top tier t20 teams. Hell even Pakistan can stake a claim here.

Overall it's between SAF, India and Australia. But the latter 2 have actually won World Cups in this millennium so between them both, I'd go for Australia for now because they dominated throughout the 00s, it's a bit more even between them and India since 2010 so we'll see.

Australia Ofcourse number 1 they dominated the early part and are a good team in latter part of the millenium.. In addition they have won 3 world cups out of 4 so no other option here..

Second is close between India and South Africa I would go with India because of their victory in 2011 WC which carries the utmost importance in cricketing world..

3rd slightly behind India will be SA..

Tests
Aus - they were #1 for most of this period and dominated.

Runner ups would be SA and India.

ODIs
Aus - 2003, 2007 and 2015 World Cup winners. A no brainer.

A distant second would be India, they have a good record and other than Aus are the only team to win a WC during this period.

India is not a top test team. They have lost 17 tests and won only 2 in this decade overseas against SA england Australia and new Zealand.
South Africa without a doubt tops the test chart.

SA and Eng both had far better all-conditions suited bowling attacks during their title runs.

India did ok, but their away attack was basically duct-tape held together Zak and praying for once in a lifetime performance from b-grade seamers like Sreesanth/RP/Munaf/PK/Irfan

However, India had some legendary batters in form of Tendulkar and Dravid and elite test class batters like Sehwag and Laxman as well. In contrast, England had only two elite level test batters, Cook and Pieterson and none of them were ATGs.

Australia
India
England/South Africa

Oh c'mon man, I know you have affection towards England but there is miles of a difference between the two in both tests and odis.

Between 2006 to 2013, SA didn't lost a single test series except one at home against Australia. Also, there hasn't been any instance when SA have lost a home series against Asian side like England have(2007, 2014) and SA have also dominated Pak in UAE unlike England.

Your questions doesn't need too much of subjective judgement. You can add a bit of opinion, but it's mostly facts.

Test format:

W/L for the top 5 teams in Test( top 3 high lighted)

W/L for the same top 5 in tests when not playing at home( top 3 highlighted)

View attachment 81978

It needs no explanation. Aus is top. SA is second and India is third. These 3 have also held rank 1 in test for longest periods.

Top 3 in the test will be Aus, SA and Ind.

----------------------------------------------------------

ODI Format:

W/L in ODI( top 3 highlighted)

View attachment 81981

Aus is far ahead in ODI due to dominating W/L and also due to winning several world cups. I will put India second due to being in top 3 in W/L and also winning a WC. SA will be third.

Top 3 in ODI will be Aus, Ind and SA.

----------------------------------------------------------

T-20 Format:

W/L in T-20 ( top 3 highlighted)

In T-20, I don't consider SA as top 3 due to not winning World T-20. I will take WI among the top 3 and get rid of SA.

Top 3 will be WI, Ind and Pakistan in T-20.

----------------------------------------------------------

You acn argue about some order in individual ranks, but over all the top 3 is very easy to answer for me. I will put,

1) Aus
2) SA
3) Ind

Some posters may object to SA being ahead of Ind because Ind has done better in the shorter formats, but I gave more weight to longer format here. Anyway, flipping their position is fine.

You can say ,

1) Aus
2/3) Ind/SA

It will be very hard to make a case for any 4th team to be included among the top 3 based on performance in all formats. Aus is best by a large margin. Ind and SA are fighting for the 2nd spot based on how you see different formats.

Excellent post. Even without looking at stats and only going with memory, I would come with these three. And stats further seal it.

England, Pakistan, New Zealand and Sri Lanka are second tier team.

Lol at India being in top 3 test sides!!

Yes, they are in top 3 test sides by hook or by crooke.

England are distant 4th closely followed by Pakistan, New Zealand and Sri Lanka.

India started the millennium as a decent touring test side. The overseas wins were few but its not like they were getting smashed, that happened during their uneasy transition period from 2011 till Kohli took over in late 2015. Similar or worse things have happened with most other test sides except Aus, RSA who rarely got ''embarrassed'' anywhere except couple of series maybe.

What a load of tripe! England have won test series in every major test playing country in past 20 years. But yeah India still at no. 3

Yes, India are still no.3. Just because England have manged some random achievement doesn't make them ahead by default.

Weaker teams have won matches/series in England. They have been far from dominant at home unlike India which is currently the benchmark for opposition teams to beat, which is why, recently, Justin Langer said that beating India in India will be an ultimate challenge for them.

Away from home, India are on par with England as well. Actually, India have better W/L ratio away as well but a good lot of those have come against lesser teams.

Pakistan are showing higher because I have considered UAE which is mentioned as neutral venue for them.

Random achievement :))) Yeah that must be so since India hasn't managed it in last 70 years!

Let's stick to the point. It is a great achievement but that doesn't mean we only consider that and leave the rest.

India has better W/L ratio than England home, away and overall as well. So, basically that's the point of discussion.

That's exactly what I was doing. But I don't expect you or many others here to get it that away performances will always be considered higher than dominating at home but keep getting smashed away. Any ways you can keep living in a well by hook or crook.

True and England are the bar, this is what makes Pakistan's dominance over you in the Millennium even more special and hence the best Test team behind AUS and SA

As per W/L ratio:-

India > England away

http://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/en...pan;team_view=bowl;template=results;type=team

At home, India >> England

I am not sure if that's exactly what you are doing. I would prefer to live in my hook or a crook logic unless you come with a more valid point.

That achievement by England is similar to say, AB de Villiers being the only ODI cricketer retiring with an avg of 50+ and a SR of 100+ in 48 years of One-day cricket. However, that doesn't make him the greatest of his era, let alone the greatest of all-time.

Did Pakistan win in England, Australia and India?

Pakistan/Australia
England

England at 3 as they have won a series in every country. Pakistan and Australia at 1. Pakistan at 1 as they have dominated England. Australia at 1 but only due to the 2000-2007 phase when they dominated England. If Australia doesn't win more series in England then Pakistan will be the unchallenged 1.

SA hasn't been able to dominate England that much, so they lose out.

Since the Millenium turned, England have won a test series in every country. Can anyone else claim that ?

Australia have won almost everywhere as well. They haven't played Pakistan in Pakistan since the Millennium turned but they won the series against Pakistan held in UAE/SL by 3-0 in 2002/03.

South Africa haven't won in India while India haven't won in Australia and South Africa. However, both have drawn series in those countries.

Pakistan haven't won in India, Australia, South Africa and England.

Agree with this.

Although SA were slightly better side across formats but I feel India would be more of a happier side in terms of achievement(No 1 Test ranking for quite some time just like SA+ WC + T20 WC + 2CT).

Australia are the clear #1 side with South Africa a close #2 in tests. #3 can go to either India, Pakistan or England.

I think India achieved quite a lot in this millennium and are rightly earned to be the in top 3 teams along with Australia and SA.

Australia clearly being the best of the 3 with 3 world cups and couple of CT's (2006 & 2009). Better test team than anyone else for most part of last 2 decades. The only trophy missing from their cupboard is the T20 WC.

When we look at India since 2000,

1. Won a series in Pakistan (Both ODI and Tests in 2003/04)
2. Won a series in England and drew one series (Won 2007, Drew 2002)
3. Drew a series in Australia (2003/04)
4. Won a series in New Zealand (ODI & Tests 2009)
5. Won CT twice (Joint winners in 2002 and Winners in 2013)
6. Won T20 WC in 2007
7. Won a ODI world cup in 2011
8. Won 3 Test series in WI (2006, 2011,2016)
9. Won 2 Test series in SL and drew 1 (Drew 2010, Won 2015, 2017)
10. Drew a Test series against a Strong SA team in 2010
11. Won CB series against a strong Aussie side in 2008
12. Won Asia cup twice (2010 & 2016)
13. Won ODI series against England Away
14. Won ODI series against SA away
15. Won ODI series against Pakistan Away (2006 and 2004)
16. Won multiple ODI series against SL and WI away.

Apart from all of the above, India have had a extended dominance at home and have only lost 2 Test series during this period, Australia 2004 and England 2012. India have also maintained number 1 ranking in Tests for a long time. Won in all countries during this period except for Australia & South Africa (We have drawn series there though).

England have done well in Tests and they have won in all countries during this period but their LO record is not that great. We are talking about overall third best team which England would have been if only Test format was considered. Apart from the 2010 WT20 title England haven't done much in the LO format. They might go on to win the 2019 WC but again, they haven't till now.

Pakistan haven't won or Drawn a series in SA, AUS, India in Tests. They do have a CT title and World T20 title like India but their Test form has been patchy. They drew a series in Zimbabwe and until their last tour to WI, struggled to win a series against WI. Haven't won a single Test in Australia in their last few tours, haven't even drawn a Test in Australia.

You did and we smashed you to pieces which elevates our domination over you even more

Lol No!
It doesn't work like that.
Pakistan was whitewashed by SL and was thrashed by WI and Zim.
We smashed them to pieces quite a few times. See ?

At best Pakistan can be at 5/6 postion after Australia, India, SA, England, Pakistan/Srilanka.

I missed this post.

England have won Test series in India, Australia and South Africa in this millennium - they also beat the ATG Australia in 2005. For me, that matters more than overall W/L ratio.

At the moment, they are joint third for me. However, if they win the World Cup this year, they will surpass South Africa as the third greatest team of the millennium after Australia and India.

England have had some inexcusable lows as well. They have repeatedly failed to beat some very mediocre Pakistan teams and have lost to the likes of Sri Lanka and West Indies as well. However, it is hard for me to ignore their massive achievements.

Okay, your opinion.

SA have hit lows now, so their away record will take a hit I feel. However, not many teams have dominated Pakistan in Pakistan/UAE when they had Younis khan and Misbah in the team.

Buttler and Curran have made England very formidable. However, they still lack a genuine fast bowler who can carry their attack on flat, bouncy pitches.
