(CNN) A woman was killed and 13 others injured in a shooting in Toronto on Sunday night, Police Chief Mark Saunders said.

The suspect is also dead, Saunders said.

The shooting victims are being treated for their injuries and their conditions were not immediately known. But one of the victims -- a young girl -- is in critical condition, Saunders told reporters late Sunday.

Shots rang out shortly after 10 p.m. ET in the Toronto's Greektown neighborhood.

It's not clear what motivated the shooter, police said. They're investigating "every possible motive, including terrorism," Saunders said.

Toronto Mayor John Tory urged people not to draw any conclusions and let police investigate the shooting.

The shooter, who had a handgun, died from an apparent gunshot wound, but it's not clear if it was self-inflicted or as a result of exchanging gunfire with police, Saunders told reporters.

A witness who was standing near the scene told CNN partner CTV that he heard about 20 shots and the sound of the weapon being reloaded repeatedly.

"And then, I saw the carnage as I ran down the street here to kind of follow the gunfire," the man told the station, who described the scene as "pretty crazy."

"I saw at least four people shot," he said.

The victims were sent to trauma centers throughout the city, Toronto Police Sgt. Glenn Russell told CNN.

Another witness, Jody Steinhauer had been dining with her family at Christina's, a Greek restaurant, when she heard what she thought was the sound of firecrackers. Then she was told to run to the back of the restaurant.

"We started to hear people scream out front," Steinhauer told CNN partner CBC.

Witnesses were transported by buses to multiple offices to speak with investigators, Russell told CNN.

The crime scene covered a bit of distance, Saunders said, and police asked people to please contact them with any information they may have. Detectives began processing several scenes connected to the shootings.

Doug Ford, the premier of Ontario, tweeted Sunday night: "My heart goes out to the victims and loved ones of the horrific act of gun violence in Toronto."

On Friday, the city rolled out a program to put 200 more officers on the streets of at-risk neighborhoods between 7 p.m. and 3 a.m. to combat gang violence, according to CTV. It's not clear if Greektown was included in that program.

Sad news. May God bless the departed souls. :(

I hope its not an immigrant, because the right wingers will use it as an excuse to push the government on immigration laws.

1 woman is dead and 1 small girl critically injured. I live literally 5 mins away from this area. Shook me when I read this news in the morning.

How a mentally ill get hold of firearm in Canada?

How a mentally ill get hold of firearm in Canada?

There are many loopholes in the system which allow a mentally ill person to obtain firearms. Plus he could have bought it off the black market.

The right wing are claiming this to be a terrorist attack because it suits their agenda. White guy drives a van and kills 8 two months ago and all the right wingers claimed mental illness when there was no evidence of it.

Don't fall for the right wing propaganda. They'll do anything to throw the Muslims and immigrants under the bus.

So this man has documented mental illness?

Most likely, if his family says he's been mentally ill his whole life then he must be mentally ill.

Also I read elsewhere that his dad has cancer, he lost his sister to a car accident a month ago and his brother is in coma. That is extremely traumatizing for anybody no matter their mental strength.

That said, he killed 2 people and injuring over a dozen and they and their families are the real victims here.

How did such a man get a gun?

Very easy.

There are small community on the border of Canada and US where guns are easily smuggled through. Those towns are populated by indigenous population and police aren't allow to enter there nor any laws apply to them.

Canada is one of the country in which it is very hard to acquired a legal gun.

Canada with population of around 37 million has around 50 million guns.

Looks like either was a Pakistani or Afghani Muslim - since he traveled to both countries and was interested in isis. They're trying to spin the story that he was mentally sick with a hired PR agent.

'No evidence' Danforth shooter Faisal Hussain connected to ISIS, Toronto police say

Police say they have "no evidence" that Faisal Hussain's shooting rampage on Toronto's Danforth Avenue was connected to ISIS after the group used an online post Wednesday to claim responsibility for Sunday's attack.

"At this stage, we have no evidence to support these claims," said Toronto police Chief Mark Saunders.

"We will continue to explore every investigative avenue including interviewing those who knew Mr. Hussain, reviewing his online activity, and looking into his experiences with mental health," he added.

Reuters had previously reported that Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS), through its Amaq news agency, had claimed responsibility for the shooting. ISIS did not provide any evidence to support the claim, nor can CBC News verify the legitimacy of the ISIS statement.

Hussain, 29, killed two people and injured 13 others during a mass shooting in Toronto's Greektown neighbourhood on Sunday night.

Julianna Kozis,10, and Reese Fallon, 18, were fatally wounded in the attack.

In its posting, Amaq said Hussain "was a soldier of the Islamic State and carried out the attack in response to calls to target the citizens of the coalition countries."

The shooting on Danforth Avenue was just one of several violent attacks around the world that ISIS has claimed responsibility for in the last several days. Experts maintain that, until recently, the militant group was fairly discerning with these sorts of claims, usually only taking credit in cases when, for example, a trusted source within the organization was in contact with the attacker.

As ISIS has lost ground and fighters in its campaigns in Syria and Iraq, it has made increasingly dubious claims of responsibility for attacks on foreign soil, often without any reliable evidence to support the assertion.

"Their claims are now much less reliable these days, and tend to depend more on Western media reporting citing their own sources. ISIS then piggybacks on that," Amarnath Amarasingam, a senior research fellow at the Institute for Strategic Dialogue, a London-based think-tank, told CBC News.

Amarasingam added that he has seen no evidence to connect Hussain to ISIS either physically or online.

In comments to reporters, Toronto Mayor John Tory cautioned against drawing any conclusions from information circulating on social media.

"I would just like to stress that people should rely on the information that is going to be forthcoming over time, including today, from the Toronto Police Service about this," he told reporters.

"They are the people who are in possession of the information that would lead to any conclusions or not about anybody involved in this."

CBC News has learned from a source close to his family that Hussain was apprehended twice by police while he was under 18. A police source said that Hussain's prior contact with authorities involved mental health problems.

The RCMP would not confirm if any Hussain alleged links to ISIS were under investigation.

"The RCMP is giving its full support to the Toronto Police Service who are investigating the incident," the national police force said.

On Tuesday, however, a spokesman for Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale said there are no national security concerns involving Hussain.

Some who knew Hussain said they were shocked to learn that police had identified him as the gunman in Sunday's shooting.

Nawal Albusaidi, who manages a community group based in Thorncliffe Park, the neighbourhood where Hussain lived with family, said Hussain took a youth job course there several years ago.

Albusaidi described him as a quiet loner who was polite but rarely interacted with other people. He did well in the program, she added.

She said that Hussain did not reveal any personal mental health struggles during his time in the course, and none were obvious to her based on her interactions with him.

Tragic for the victims and for his parents too - one child dead in a car accident, one child a gangster and drug dealer and now this one has destroyed dozens of lives as well as his own.
