A disturbing video of an Indian student being handcuffed and pinned to the floor by law enforcement at Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey has gone viral, prompting swift response from the Indian Consulate in New York.

The incident occured on June 7, was brought to public attention by Indian-American entrepreneur Kunal Jain, who shared the footage on social media platform X.

Jain claimed the student was scheduled to board a flight that night but was instead detained, left behind, and later deported.

In the video, the visibly distraught student is seen restrained on the ground, crying as officers stand nearby. Jain, who witnessed the incident firsthand, expressed anguish over the student’s treatment, writing, “I witnessed a young Indian student being deported from Newark Airport last night, handcuffed, crying, treated like a criminal.”

“He came chasing dreams, not causing harm. As an NRI, I felt helpless and heartbroken. This is a human tragedy,” said Jain.

He added that the student’s family likely had no idea about the unfolding events. “This poor kid’s parents won’t know what’s happening to him,” Jain wrote in a post shared at 4:43 a.m. on June 9.

He also tagged the Indian Embassy in Washington, D.C. and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, urging intervention.

Did he have all the required papers? :inti

A lot of Indians migrate to USA illegally. Maybe that played a factor.

India is actually the 3rd largest source of illegal immigration in USA (behind Mexico and El Salvador).

If he was trying to enter illegally, then USA has all the right to deport him. However, police brutality can be debated.

I watch a lot of police cam videos in youtube and USA police is pretty badass. One video I was watching last night of a guy named Kenneth Dehart who shot a police officer in Tenesse during regular traffic stop and ran away. Cops caught him after 5 days, made a circle around him to hide from public view and busted him properly. The guy was bloodied all around was not even able to walk. Many in comment section was questioning should police take law in their own hand like that.

If it was UK, police would be like "Hello mate, can I pls put a handcuff on you...is that okay? Get into the car pls, I will switch on the AC to make it as comfortable as I can for you yeah"

:kp

I don't think Indian NRIs should be posting negative comments about US airport police unless they are aware of all the facts. The American people want to know they are protected, they don't want their security forces acting with one hand tied behind their backs.

Think as Americans, not Indians.

They think and act like Americans when in India, and like Indians when in America. :inti

I do appreciate US police in certain areas to maintain calm but LA, NY wont be one of those.
They are involved in a lot of violence and corruption.

Man how bias you are.

So you think posting negative comments about authority deserve this kind of treatment? Not much 'Land of free' and statue of liberty then that USA stands for.

I know since the person is Indian you are singing a different tune and if he was Pakistani or muslim you will be blaming the police.

The person posting the negative comments is not the one getting handcuffed. I think you are getting mixed up. Indian NRIs like to pride themselves on their integration...well if they are integrated so well, they should let their security forces do their jobs.

At least they are open about it. I'd rather be handcuffed and manhandled a bit than bombed to pieces like under former more diplomatic American regimes.
It's not like they aren't bombing to pieces now. He has given netanyahu the greenlight to destroy Gaza. They are physically bombing but are in full control of what's going on

You are hung onto Indian and taking this opportunity to enjoy and expose your bias for all to see. However, I am talking something different. I dnt know what this guy has done but if its a case of trying to enter illegally, then USA has all the right to deport him. I have already said that. However, police brutality like this is not required unless this guy was trying to shoot them down etc.

Where is that rat Modi? Instead of taking selfies and making funny faces with Italian PM he needs to address this and speak up.

But he’s a small coward who doesn’t actually want to stand up for his people.

Sad to see either way, this isn’t a way to treat a human unless they are an actual criminal threat and caused some serious harm or crime.

Well you just said yourself you don't know what this guy has done. So maybe those security guys know better and are handling it appropriately. You were mocking the UK police in an earlier post for being too soft so you can't have it both ways.

Police brutality was uncalled for. It the guy was breaking any law, he should be punished by the court.

You also dont know what this guy has done but blindly supporting the police just because the person at the receiving end is India. If he was Pakistani or muslim, you will be saying exactly opposite.

Changing topic now? I thought you preach people to stay in topic and dnt do whataboutery.

Go and read on that thread about what I had to say about police. The guys reading namaaz on road blocking traffic was obviously wrong but police should not have taken matter in their hands.

Rajdeep always fair in his analysis unlike @Cpt. Rishwat who changes his stance every other sentence.

You've got it the wrong way round. I wouldn't normally support the police blindly, but given the guy they are manhandling is Indian, yes I will support them. This isn't double standards, I am applying Indian standards. They are always vocal to support US/UK police forces against Pakistanis, or Muslims in general. Therefore it is the height of hypocrisy to suddenly start whining when their own illegals get the same treatment.

So you accepting that you are being bias and only supporting police brutality because the guy was Indian. And you are justifying it by saying some Indians do the same as well. That is the gyst of what you are trying to say right?

Its fine actually but say it openly na. We never expected anything different from you. The only issue is when you pretend to be righteous and all.

I think you have a wrong interpretation of my standards. I have always been vocal on benefits of multiculturalism and it is in this spirit I believe in letting others define their own values rather than imposing mine on them. So if Indians want harsh treatment by western security forces on Muslim immigrants, I will assume they want the same for their own as well. So you see I am judging you by your standards, and judging us by our standards. This is the beauty of multiculturalism.
