Two men have been arrested under the Terrorism Act at Stansted Airport after Typhoon jets were scrambled to intercept a passenger plane.

The pair - a 34-year-old man from Kuwait and a 48-year-old man from Italy - were detained shortly after 7pm on Sunday after arriving on a Ryanair flight from Vienna, police said.

Essex Police said in a statement: "Counter Terrorism Policing officers from the Eastern Region Special Operations Unit have this evening (Sunday) detained two men under Schedule 7 of the Terrorism Act (2000).

"Enquiries are ongoing."

An RAF spokesperson said: "Typhoon fighter aircraft from RAF Coningsby were launched this evening (Sunday) to intercept a civilian aircraft. The aircraft was escorted safely to Stansted."

Ryanair added: "The crew of a Ryanair flight from Vienna to London Stansted this evening (30 Aug) were alerted of a potential security threat on board.

"In line with procedures, the captain informed UK authorities and continued to London Stansted, where the aircraft landed normally and taxied to a remote stand where passengers disembarked safely.

"Passengers in London Stansted waiting to depart to Vienna were transferred to a spare aircraft to minimise the delay to their flight.

"This is now a matter for the local police".

Imagine being the leader of the fighter pair, and the possibility of being ordered to shoot down a passenger jet.

Bit of a joke this.

Two men have been released from police custody after a suspicious device found in the bathroom of a passenger plane was found to be a mobile phone.

Typhoon jets were scrambled to intercept the Ryanair flight from Vienna to London on Sunday after the object sparked concern.

The pair - a 34-year-old man from Kuwait and a 48-year-old man from Italy - were detained at Stansted Airport shortly after 7pm under the Terrorism Act.

They have been released without charge after officers from the Eastern Region Special Operations Unit (ERSOU) found neither had committed any offence.

An ERSOU spokesperson confirmed the "suspicious" object was a mobile phone.

Detective Superintendent Andy Waldie, head of ERSOU's counter terrorism policing unit, said: "We understandably take any reports of suspicious objects or behaviour on flights very seriously and thankfully on this occasion there was no cause for concern.

"I'd like to thank those on the flight for their cooperation and understanding while officers conducted their enquiries."

This is unacceptable. I hope the two men sue.

The RAF scrambled Typhoons because someone on an airliner misidentified a phone.

Ah well, at least it was good practice.

Costs taxypayers thousands and there is no need for practice, no airliner has been taken down since 911 by terrorists, even that event was an inside job.

Good the UK is getting rid of tanks, fighter jets which cost the taxpayer thousands each time they go for a practice run, should be next.

Ryanair is a dump of an airline, disgusting seats, small plane with poor service. To top it off the boss of Ryanair is a self confessed racist, Islamaphobe. His sick mindset has been passed down to his cabin crew/pilots. It's just another reason not to travel on this pathetic airline, it makes PIA look like a Royal Airline.

The Typhoons probably burnt through more fuel just by getting to the end of the runway than was the cost of the cellphone
