Mr Johnson has tested positive for coronavirus, Downing Street says. His symptoms are mild and he will continue to lead the government response to the virus while he self-isolates, a spokesman says.

Don't like him very much (at all tbh) but i wish him a speedy recovery.

Well.

The one person who will never get it and will continue to outlive us all is that Queen Elizabeth lol.

Westminster is reacting to the news that Boris Johnson has tested positive for coronavirus.

Former Tory Cabinet minister Mel Stride says the PM has done the "right thing" to self-isolate and it is clear he "is very much still in charge" of the government and its coronavirus response.

Acting Lib Dem leader Sir Ed Davey has wished the PM a "full and speedy recovery" and said his thoughts were also with his fiancée Carrie Symonds, who is expecting their first child.

James Forsyth, the political editor of the Spectator, says while the PM will not be able to "go to work as usual", he will still be able to lead the government using technology - pointing out that Mr Johnson chaired a Cabinet meeting on Tuesday using the Zoom conferencing tool.

However, he says the PM has had close contact with other key figures in the government, including the chancellor and health secretary, in recent days and there are concerns about what will happen if the infection spreads more widely in Whitehall.

Boris Johnson is continuing to work in No 10 after his diagnosis, although the BBC understands that his Downing Street flat has been "sealed off".

A No 10 spokesman said the PM's meals and work documents would be left outside his door.

It is understood his fiancee Carrie Symonds, who is pregnant, is self-isolating elsewhere, although No 10 has not given any details about where she is.

Other people working in Downing Street are also now self-isolating.

Mr Johnson will not be appearing at this afternoon's daily coronavirus briefing. It is understood that senior Cabinet minister Michael Gove will be taking his place.

Boris Johnson says his symptoms are mild and he continues to lead the government’s Coronavirus strategy.

No 10 has previously confirmed that if the PM couldn’t work, Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab would take over in his role as first secretary of state. At the moment, that’s not happening.

The question now is who the PM has had contact with and who else will need to be tested.

Chancellor Rishi Sunak has not been tested yet because he’s shown no symptoms.

Measures had been taken to limit contact in Downing Street; cabinet earlier this week was largely by conference call and the daily briefing has gone digital too.

However, the PM has been in Parliament in recent days and hosted some senior figures in person for cabinet, as well as the chief medical officer.

So how come Mr. Johnson gets tested so quickly?

So how come Mr. Johnson gets tested so quickly?

Because he is rich and has got private doctors.

Most of the public can’t even get tested. That’s why the total number of people with Covid 19 is a lot higher than the official figure.

They are plenty of people who have or had Covid 19 and they don’t or didn’t even know, because of lack of tests being conducted.

Dr Habib who passed away in Essex could not get a ventilator... anyways that's how this society works.

Because he is rich and has got private doctors.

Or maybe, just maybe, he is the chief executive of the country and him being healthy and up-for-it is imperative for the country to fight off the virus rather than some average Joe on the street.

So how come Mr. Johnson gets tested so quickly?

He's the PM.
The most important political figure.
He leads the country.
He's not a nobody like the rest of us

Let's not indulge in petty politics. I don't like him but saying things like this will just make us look stupid.

So how come Mr. Johnson gets tested so quickly?

As a high level person he has most likely also met many other important official recently. It only makes sense to test him ASAP to determine whether he has the virus and if other important figures have been exposed to the virus too.

As the prime minister announces he has coronavirus, concern will turn to the number of people he has come into contact with.

Boris Johnson was last seen in public on Thursday evening as he clapped outside Number 10 as part of a nationwide gesture to thank NHS staff.

He was standing alongside Chancellor Rishi Sunak - both were clearly adhering to the two metre rule.

On Wednesday, Mr Johnson chaired a COVID-19 meeting before appearing at Prime Minister's Question's where he was sitting close to Health Secretary Matt Hancock and Home Secretary Priti Patel.

Mr Johnson has held regular cabinet meetings and emergency coronavirus sessions - however most ministers are believed to have dialled in.

Downing Street has previously confirmed that Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab would stand in if Mr Johnson was too unwell to continue.

If Mr Raab was also ill, the prime minister has the power to delegate responsibility to any of his ministers.

A Downing Street spokeswoman said Mr Johnson was tested on the personal advice of Professor Whitty.

"In keeping with the guidance, the prime minister is self-isolating in Downing Street," she added.

It is not known whether he is staying with his fiancee, Carrie Symonds, who is several months pregnant.

Neither the prime minister's senior adviser Dominic Cummings nor Mr Sunak have symptoms or have been tested.

The announcement comes just days after Prince Charles confirmed he had tested positive for coronavirus.

Meanwhile, it is understood Mr Johnson last saw the Queen on 11 March when the monarch held her weekly audience with the prime minister at Buckingham Palace.

Their following meeting, held on 18 March, was conducted via telephone as have their subsequent conversations.

LONDON (Reuters) - A knock at the door and the sound of retreating footsteps - that is how British Prime Minister Boris Johnson will have food and paperwork delivered from the outside world for the next seven days after he tested positive for coronavirus overnight.

Johnson said on Friday he would still lead the country’s response to the outbreak but would be holed up inside a borrowed office within the nation’s seat of government.

The death toll in Britain shot up by a third on Friday to 759 from 578 people the previous day.

“I am working from home. I’m self-isolating. And that’s entirely the right thing to do,” Johnson said in a video message on Twitter.

“But be in no doubt that I can continue, thanks to the wizardry of modern technology, to communicate with all my top team to lead the national fightback against coronavirus.”

Now, he will be working from an office borrowed from finance minister Rishi Sunak in a property adjacent to his own official offices, holding ministerial meetings via video conference.

Meals and paperwork will be delivered to his door, a spokesman for the prime minister said.

“In terms of where staff have to leave meals for the PM or to deliver work, then obviously they can leave that for the Prime Minister, and they can knock on the door ... and then they can safely depart,” the spokesman said.

The unprecedented arrangement means doors and corridors have been sealed off within the sprawling 17th century residence-cum-offices of Downing Street, recognised around the world for its glossy black front door and unusual dark facade.

Downing Street, a popular tourist attraction, has been the on-off seat of the government for nearly 300 years. Britain’s role in two world wars was coordinated from the central London terrace near the Houses of Parliament.

Johnson, 55, described his symptoms as mild - a temperature and a cough - and his spokesman said the virus did not affect his running of the daily governmental meeting of experts and ministers that the media has been dubbed the “war cabinet”.

“The PM played his role entirely via video conferencing ... and that’s how it will continue,” the spokesman said, referring to Friday’s 0930 GMT meeting.

It was not immediately clear whether Johnson’s 32-year-old partner, Carrie Symonds, who is pregnant, had been tested.

Johnson will remain bunkered down for seven days, in line with public health guidance, while the duty of leading a daily press conference is likely to be delegated to other ministers during that time. No responsibilities have been handed over to his designated deputy, foreign minister Dominic Raab.

During this time the British leader will effectively abandon the Number 10 Downing Street address, and instead work from Number 11 - traditionally the office of the finance minister.

“Thank you to everybody who’s doing what I’m doing, working from home, to stop the spread of the virus from household to household,” Johnson said.

“That’s the way we’re going to win, we’re going to beat it, and we’re going to beat it together.”

Kuenssberg: This is anything but business as usual

One of the first moments that raised eyebrows in the course of the UK outbreak was when health minister Nadine Dorries came down with coronavirus.

Then, last week, we discovered that some key staff in Number 10, including the prime minister's chief Brexit negotiator David Frost, were self-isolating with suspected symptoms.

A fair number of MPs took themselves off into isolation for fear of having contracted the infection.

Still, the news this morning that the prime minister himself has contracted coronavirus felt like a shock.

Within in a couple of hours we discovered that Health Secretary Matt Hancock has the illness too.

Both of their symptoms are said to be mild. They have now joined much of the country in that most common of activities, WFH - working from home.

Questions are swirling, of course, about who else involved in co-ordinating the fight against this disease may fall victim soon.

Boris Johnson's team say that he is absolutely well enough to carry on in the job.

But with the prime minister now a victim of the virus itself, this is anything but business as usual.

This was the meaning behind my thread about the caste system, I was trying to show that in reality it is not just in India that it prevails, although obviously there it is more cruel and fatalistic.

All are equal, but some are always more equal than others.

US President Donald Trump has spoken to Boris Johnson on the phone after the UK prime minister tested positive for coronavirus overnight.

The White House said Mr Trump thanked the PM for his close friendship and wished him a speedy recovery.

Downing Street said the pair "agreed to work together closely, along with the G7, the G20, and other international partners, to defeat the coronavirus pandemic".

Can we please have that idiot Piers Morgan stand up and serve.

Let’s see if he can actually walk the walk like he thinks he can

Mr Cummings, senior adviser to Prime Minister Boris Johnson, is self-isolating at home after developing coronavirus symptoms, a No 10 source has confirmed.

It was confirmed last week that Mr Johnson himself had tested positive for the virus and was self-isolating in Downing Street.

I am impressed by the manner in which Boris has handled this - no fuss, just got on with it - kudos to him and hope he recovers soon.

Boris Johnson will carry on self-isolating after continuing to display mild symptoms of the coronavirus including having a temperature.

The prime minister tested positive for the virus last Friday and had been due to come out of self-isolation today.

Mr Johnson continues to work from home and chaired a coronavirus meeting on Friday morning.

He was seen on Thursday applauding the NHS and other key workers from his flat in Downing Street.

Speaking in a video posted on Twitter, Mr Johnson said: "Although I am feeling better and I've done my seven days of isolation alas I still have one of the minor symptoms.

"I still have a temperature. So in accordance with government advice I must continue my self isolation until that symptom itself goes.

"But we're working clearly the whole time on our programme to beat the virus."

He also added with expected good weather over the weekend that people may be tempted to ignore the advice and spend more time outside.

"I just urge you not do do that," he said. "Please, please stick with the guidance."

He added: "This country has made a huge effort, a huge sacrifice and done absolutely brilliantly well in delaying the spread of the virus.

"Let's stick with it now and remember that incredible clapping last night for our fantastic NHS. We are doing it to protect them and save lives."

It's been more than a week since the prime minister stood at the podium in Downing Street to deliver the daily coronavirus briefing.

Since announcing he'd tested positive for the virus seven days ago his public appearances have been limited to video clips filmed on his phone from inside his flat, above 11 Downing Street.

He did venture on to the doorstep of No 11 last night to join the national clap for keyworkers and NHS staff - picked up by TV cameras notably stood some distance away.

In his latest self-shot message, he said he was still showing mild symptoms of the virus and would therefore stay in isolation until they passed.

And in a direct plea to the public, he urged people to stick to social distancing guidelines this weekend.

Carrie Symonds in bed with Covid-19 symptoms

Carrie Symonds, the girlfriend of UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson, says she has spent several days in bed with coronavirus symptoms.

Mr Johnson himself tested positive for the virus last week and has been conducting cabinet meetings via video link.

Ms Symmonds adds that having Covid-19 symptoms while pregnant is "obviously worrying" and has posted some "reassuring" guidance on Twitter.

Boris Johnson's fiance Carrie Symonds, who is pregnant with the couple's first child, says she has spent the past week in bed with symptoms of coronavirus.

Posting on social media, Ms Symonds said she has not yet been tested for COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus.

"I've spent the past week in bed with the main symptoms of Coronavirus," she said on Twitter.

"I haven't needed to be tested and, after seven days of rest, I feel stronger and I'm on the mend."

The 32-year-old, who is at least six months pregnant, advised other expectant parents to keep up to date with relevant guidance from The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists.

Ms Symonds' fiance, Prime Minister Boris Johnson, is currently self-isolating after showing symptoms of the coronavirus.

Mr Johnson, 55, has already been in his flat above 10 Downing Street for seven days, the reccommended amount of isolation time for those living alone.

But Mr Johnson will continue to remain away from others as he still is suffering from a high temperature, a symptom of COVID-19.

Ms Symonds, a former communications head for the Conservative Party, is believed to have left Downing Street more than a week ago for her flat in Camberwell in South London.

In a photo on her Instagram account, Ms Symonds can be seen lying in bed with the couple's dog, Dilyn - "Self-isolating isn't so bad with this one," the photo's caption reads.

The Chief Medical Officer placed those who are pregnant in a vulnerable group last month, which means expectant parents should reduce social contact through social distancing measures, particularly those in their third trimester.

These measures include:

Staying away from public places
Avoiding anyone who has symptoms which may suggest the coronavirus
Avoid non-essential use of public transport
Working from home, where possible
Avoiding gatherings with family or friends

The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists say that those who are pregnant are still no more likely to contract COVID-19 than the general population.

However, the College says pregnancy in a small number of people can alter how their bodies handle severe viral infections.

Sky's Sarah-Jane Mee, herself expecting, gets expert advice for pregnant women on how to take care of themselves during lockdown.
The College also advises that expectant parents continue to attend antenatal and postnatal appointments as normal, unless they have had symptoms of COVID-19.

Those with symptoms should contact their communtiy midwife to postpone routine visits until their isolation period is over.

Mr Johnson and Ms Symonds were last seen together in public at the Commonwealth Day Service on 9 March.

The couple got engaged at the end of 2019, and their first child together is due in the "early summer".

Both have been living together in residence above 10 Downing Street since the Prime Minister took over as leader of the Conservatives.

I am impressed by the manner in which Boris has handled this - no fuss, just got on with it - kudos to him and hope he recovers soon.

Sorry but not sure you are aware of his actual policies, anyone can talk a good game.

Boris voted AGAINST a pay rise for nurses not long ago.

Boris's government has shifted strategies multiple times now, showing they are clueless.

When Boris, Health minister and main doctor tested positive, why should anyone follow their advice?

Boris's government has made policies but many have no laws to police them.

He is a total loser and embarrasment to the UK.

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson has been admitted to hospital.

A Downing Street spokesperson says: "On the advice of his doctor, the prime minister has tonight been admitted to hospital for tests.

"This is a precautionary step, as the prime minister continues to have persistent symptoms of coronavirus ten days after testing positive for the virus."

The Downing Street spokesperson goes on to say: "[Mr Johnson] thanks NHS staff for all of their incredible hard work and urges the public to continue to follow the Government's advice to stay at home, protect the NHS and save lives.”

The prime minister has had coronavirus for 10 days and continues to have persistent symptoms, including a high temperature.

For purely precautionary reasons, he has gone to hospital for tests.

It was considered sensible for doctors to see Mr Johnson in person given he has ongoing symptoms, the spokesperson says. He remains in charge of the UK government, and is in contact with ministerial colleagues and officials.

The news comes a day after Mr Johnson's pregnant fiancée Carrie Symonds announced that she had experienced coronavirus symptoms.

Every time I saw him after his positive test, he did look ill. Bur reports are indicating its just for routine tests so hopefully all will be well.

Stay strong Boris, pull through and let’s begin Herd Immunity phase in England big man!

LONDON (Reuters) - British Prime Minister Boris Johnson was still in hospital on Monday suffering persistent coronavirus symptoms 10 days after testing positive for the virus, although Downing Street said he remained in charge of the government.

“The PM is still at hospital,” a British government source said. “He spent the night in hospital.”

Johnson, who had been isolating in Downing Street after testing positive for the virus last month, was taken to hospital on Sunday night because he still had a high temperature and his doctors felt he needed additional tests.

“On the advice of his doctor, the prime minister has tonight been admitted to hospital for tests,” his Downing Street office said in a statement on Sunday.

“This is a precautionary step, as the prime minister continues to have persistent symptoms of coronavirus ten days after testing positive for the virus,” the statement added.

On March 27, Johnson became the first leader of a major power to announce that he had tested positive. The 55-year-old went into isolation at an apartment in Downing Street and said on Friday he was staying there as he still had a high temperature.

Downing Street underscored that this was not an emergency admission and that Johnson remained in charge of the government. Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab will chair the government’s emergency COVID-19 meeting on Monday, a source said.

With only an unwieldy collection of sometimes ancient and contradictory precedents to go by, there is no simple, formally-enshrined “Plan B” or succession scenario should the prime minister become incapacitated.

Queen Elizabeth, who delivered a rallying call on Sunday to the British people just as Johnson was admitted, has been informed of his admission to hospital, Buckingham Palace said. It made no further comment.

U.S. President Donald Trump said Johnson was a “strong man” as he passed on his nation’s best wishes.

“All Americans are praying for him,” Trump told a news conference. “He’s a friend of mine, he’s a great gentleman and a great leader, and as you know he went to the hospital today but I’m hopeful and sure that he’s going to be fine.”

The pound fell against the dollar and euro, and was trading at $1.2227 on Monday.

“When a head of state or government is stricken like this, it will cause concern for holders of sterling and sterling assets,” said Masafumi Yamamoto, chief currency strategist at Mizuho Securities in Tokyo.

PM IN HOSPITAL

Johnson, the face of the 2016 Brexit campaign, won a resounding election victory in December before leading the United Kingdom out of the European Union on Jan. 31.

But he has faced criticism for initially approving a much more modest response to the novel coronavirus outbreak than other major European leaders, telling a news conference on March 3 that he had been shaking hands with coronavirus patients.

He then changed tack when scientific projections showed a quarter of a million people could die in the United Kingdom.

Johnson effectively shuttered the world’s fifth-largest economy, advising people to stay at home and the elderly or infirm to isolate themselves for weeks.

The virus, though, had already penetrated the British government.

Johnson and his health minister tested positive last month and his chief medical adviser also self isolated. Johnson’s pregnant 32-year-old fiancée, Carrie Symonds, also had symptoms but said on Saturday she was feeling better.

From an apartment above Number 11 Downing Street, and with food brought to his door, Johnson continued to lead the government’s response and chaired meetings via video conference.

He has posted a series of video messages on Twitter since then, initially appearing in a suit and tie but in the latest post on Friday, he appeared weary, sitting in a chair with his shirt open at the neck.

“Although I’m feeling better and I’ve done my seven days of isolation, alas I still have one of the symptoms, a minor symptom, I still have a temperature,” he said.

PRECAUTIONARY TESTS

Downing Street refused to say what tests Johnson was to have in hospital, but experts said a person of the prime minister’s age with COVID-19 symptoms after 10 days would likely be assessed for their oxygen levels, lung, liver and heart functions, and undergo an electrocardiogram heart check.

“We don’t know exactly why the PM has gone to hospital except we have been told he is having tests,” said Derek Hill, professor of medical imaging science at University College London.

“Many people attending hospital with COVID-19 have difficulty breathing. Some people are rapidly discharged. Some others can quickly deteriorate and need help breathing. We have no reason to believe the PM needs such help.”

Health officials said on Sunday the UK death toll from the coronavirus had risen by 621 to 4,934.

The housing secretary, Robert Jenrick has confirmed that foreign secretary, Dominic Raab will chair a coronavirus meeting on Monday morning in the absence of Boris Johnson.

However, Mr. Jenrick told BBC Radio he expects the prime minister to return to Downing Street shortly.

"He will be updated regularly in hospital as he has been while self-isolating. Dominic Raab is the first secretary of state so he will chair the regular morning meeting however, the PM does remain in charge of the government," Jenrick said.

Prime Minister's spokesman says Boris Johnson remains under observation in St Thomas' hospital in London and "has a temperature and a cough"

I hope you're being sarcastic?

I absolutely despise Boris Johnson. However, I hope he makes a full recovery so Dominic Raab is not inflicted on our nation.

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson is in "good spirits" and had “a comfortable night” at St Thomas' Hospital in London, Downing Street has said.

Mr Johnson "remains in hospital under observation", the PM’s official spokesman told reporters.

"The PM spoke with a doctor and was able to set out that his symptoms remained persistent," he added. The spokesman described the symptoms as "a temperature and a cough".

On reports the prime minister has received oxygen treatment, the spokesman said he did not know the origin of those reports and urged caution.

The prime minister remains in charge of the government but the daily COVID-19 response meeting was taken this morning by Dominic Raab as First Secretary of State.

"He is receiving updates in hospital and continuing to receive a box," the spokesman said, referring to the ministerial red box with briefings and papers for sign-off.

Question asked during presser

"Why is the PM sick enough to take a hospital bed but well enough to run the country"

He's been moved to Intensive care a short while ago.

Seems more serious than the government let on.

I dont like Boris, but wish him good health, looks bad for him atm.

Boris Johnson has been moved to intensive care after his condition worsened, Downing Street has said.

The prime minister was admitted to St Thomas' Hospital in London on Sunday night - 10 days after testing positive for coronavirus - after continuing to display symptoms of COVID-19.

He was initially admitted "as a precaution" but Mr Johnson's health has since deteriorated, Number 10 said.

The prime minister has now asked Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab to deputise for him "where necessary".

A Number 10 spokesman said: "Over the course of this afternoon, the condition of the prime minister has worsened and, on the advice of his medical team, he has been moved to the intensive care unit at the hospital.

"The prime minister has asked Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab, who is the First Secretary of State, to deputise for him where necessary.

"The prime minister is receiving excellent care, and thanks all NHS staff for their hard work and dedication."

Frankly Boris didn't look well during those Twitter videos posted during his self-isolation.

Worrying times. Hope the PM recovers.

If this doesn’t send out a warning to the people who are not taking it seriously tben I don’t know what can.

If this doesn’t send out a warning to the people who are not taking it seriously tben I don’t know what can.

We dont know what is going on behind the scences.

Russian media reported Boris is in intensive care which was denied by the British government moments ago and then they came clean.

Boris is a libeterian, who would be against a lockdown and also a helper of businsesses, hence the first policy of herd community(similar to Sweden). All of a sudden he is forced to make a recorded video, visibly shaken and employs a lock down.

Fishy for sure.

I didn’t expect this. It is genuinely jolting news.

Hope the PM gets well soon.

These are dark times.

If he is in a medically-induced coma, he is in serious trouble.

Check Russian news for the latest ,dont trust the BBC.

Just heard the news about Boris, hope he pulls through. This is quite jolting news.

I hope and pray he pulls through this.
Hearing he was conscious when taken into ICU so that’s something.

Please guys, if you can stay at home

Hopefully he pulls through, come on man, you need to get back out to get corona done.

It is being researched whether the amount of viral load can have an effect on how severe the diseases develops. With the hypothesis being that the higher amount of exposure you had to the virus, the more likely you are to develop a severe infection.

He did say he was shaking hands with coronavirus patients in the hospital. He most likely wasn't keeping his distance either. With such a reckless attitude it could mean a potentially high exposure to the virus. Though that's all speculations on my part.

Let's hope for the best.

I wish him full recovery

I know it is not right thimg to say this but his suitation can have positive impact as well. Many consider this a joke in Pakistan.

Really worrying news. Even though I don't agree with his policies, he is still a human being and I hope and pray that for the sake of his fiancee, their unborn child and the whole of UK, he pulls through.

Let's hope for the best.

Yet we are supposed to listen to him.

Sky News understands that the Prime Minister had breathing difficulties and was given oxygen before going into intensive care but is not on a ventilator.

It's amazing that a world leader is in critical care during a pandemic. Some news outlet reported that of 690 coronavirus patients moved to ICU in Britain, 50% have died. Grim days are ahead .

Yeah I've heard this too, this is why many relatively young doctors and nurses have been in critical condition and some have died.

He said he was shaking hands with people at the hospital, but I think it's a bit unrealistic to believe he was given access to coronavirus patients and shook their hands, particularly when afterwards he wasn't even absolutely sure if there was coronavirus patients in the hospital.

Boris has clearly said he shook hands with coronavirus patients.

It's hardly clear is it. You don't genuinely believe the Prime Minister was being shown around a hospital and the medical professionals present not only exposed him to coronavirus patients and allowed him to shake their hands (unrealistic for starters before we even get on to the next bit), but didn't even tell him for certain that they were coronavirus patients?

Ist very clear. Not sure what is confusing you.

In his own words he said he shook hands with EVERYONE and also said the hospital had a coronavirus patients. Everyone includes them. Dont assume PM and his adviors are some sort on intelligent people, Boris is known as the buffoon for a reason, he is a dumb af.

Boris Johnson was given oxygen before being taken into intensive care on Monday afternoon, the BBC's Chris Mason reports.

Not much has been released as to the prime minister's condition, but Number 10's statement earlier said he had "worsened" after suffering persistent symptoms of the coronavirus.

We are heading for a coalition govt. I can't imagine a greater crisis than this in my lifetime

And now you don't just believe the doctors in the hospital gave him direct access to coronavirus patients without telling him they were coronavirus patients, but that he quite literally walked around and shook the hands of every single one of the likely 1000+ people that would've been in the hospital in a single evening? I think you're being a little unrealistic here...
