LONDON: The British government has rejected the demand of the Indian government seeking a ban on a pro-Khalistan group planning to issue a “London Declaration” for a “referendum” on Punjab’s independence from India at Trafalgar Square on August 12.

The US-based group called Sikhs for Justice is preparing for the event in Trafalgar Square and its understood the group has the support of many Sikh groups in the UK. Sikhs for Justice held a press conference in Southall, London, and announced its plans of “referendum” with the pledge that it will continue to highlight the case of a separate Sikh homeland.

The Sunday Times reported that the event next Sunday in Trafalgar Square has caused a diplomatic rift between the British and Indian governments, with India lodging a formal protest with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO).

Indian government wrote to the British government that a minority of Sikh hardliners are exploiting free-speech laws in Britain to call for the creation of a separatist state known as “Khalistan”.

The paper reported that the rally is being funded by Sikhs for Justice and that one of the key figures linked with the event is a Birmingham-based activist, Paramjeet Singh Pamma, wanted in India for his alleged involvement in bombings in 2010 and for the killing the previous year of Rulda Singh, a political leader who worked for the Hindu nationalist cause.

Pamma, who came to Britain in 2000, denies the “false charges” and said the British police investigated him in 2010-11 which resulted in no action against him and an attempt by the Indian authorities to extradite Pamma from Portugal — where he was arrested on holiday in 2015 — ended in failure.

When asked about the Indian government’s request to ban the rally, a spokesman of the FCO said that in the UK, people have the right to gather together and to demonstrate their views, provided that they do so within the law.

The spokesman said that actions will be taken if laws of free speech are violated or disorder or violence is encouraged in Britain.

Its understood that the British government had requested the British government to deny permission for the event. Sikhs for Justice hopes that around 10,000 Sikhs will be attending the event in London from all over the UK.

Pamma said the rally is intended to raise awareness for a non-binding referendum in 2020, calling for the Sikh-majority state of Punjab to be granted independence. Organisers are hoping a high turnout will put pressure on the United Nations to ask India to hold a plebiscite, said the Sunday Times.

“On August 12, we will unveil the case for Sikhs’ right to self-determination as guaranteed in the UN Charter and International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights,’’ said SFJ’s legal advisor, attorney Gurpatwant Singh Pannun.

“It is the principle of the right to self-determination and the common occupying power – India – that brings Sikh and Kashmiri people on a joint platform in their democratic quest for freedom of their homelands.”

The Sikh Federation (UK) told this correspondent in a statement said that Indian reaction to the event in London on Khalistan was unnecessary.

“As usual the Indian authorities are overreacting to the Sikh Diaspora and resorting to misinformation. Since 1966 the Indian state in accepting the right to self-determination at the UN imposed an unacceptable ‘reservation’ that it could not apply to the people of India. No doubt fearing a break up of the country with a number of legitimate secessionist movements.

“The right of self-determination is a basic human right and absolutely fundamental to the protection of individual rights. The vast majority if not all UK politicians support this right based on international law.”

The Sikh Federation added: “In our view the reestablishment of a Sikh homeland is inevitable with the Sikh Diaspora leading the way and gaining the direct support of world powers like the USA and China with a vested interest and countries like the UK, Germany, Canada and Australia to name a few, also playing their part.

Metropolitan police said it was aware of the march in London and “an appropriate and proportionate policing plan is in place”.

One more slap in the face for Indian govt trying to shut down freedom of speech in the United Kingdom. Please Mr Modi, stop embarrassing Indians who are trying to make an honest living in this country, they don't need this sort of publicity.

It's a punjabi matter, why you as a Bengali telling the sikhs what they should or shouldn't do.

Where am i telling Sikhs in UK what they should do? I am only asking which part of UK will be named as Khalistan.

Some Sikh leaders say India should accept the referendum because it'd show once for all that the Khalistan movement has failed, considering that the Khalistan independentists will then have no more legal tool for their claims.

Sikhs are over represented in the Indian diaspora (in Canada, where the Khalistan movement is the most vibrant, they literally become ministers, imagine the impact), and with the younger generation more aware of Punjab insurgency/Operation Bluestar/Sant Bhindranwale/etc, if India doesn't resolve the issue now it'll be a headache for the decades to come.

Khalistan in the British isles would be quite a sight to behold.
I hope they remain on friendly terms with India.

There is no mention of any part of UK being made into Khalistan, perhaps you should read the article again and see if it becomes more clear.

Then why a referendum in UK? How will people of UK decide where Khalistan is to be made if not in UK?

The UK is home to many migrants from diverse parts of the world. From secular Iranians calling for the end of Sharia law in Iran, to Sikhs demanding their own homeland in Punjab, demonstrations have regularly been held by those calling for change abroad. Just because the British govt allows peaceful demonstrations, it does not automatically mean that it agrees with the wishes of the protesters. I hope I have explained that so it is now clear to you.

I hope they include Sikhs from Punjab and various other parts of India in the referendum as well otherwise it would look quite silly.
But if it's about carving a separate Khalistan in Birmingham, more power to them.

Vijay Mallya and Nirav Modi agree.

But how can sikhs in UK decide what will happen in another country? They are in UK, they can decide about khalistan in UK not anywhere else.

haha.

Its funny watching Indians defend against this when they were so ecstatic about the Free Balochistan bus ads a while back.

Defend? What is there to defend? Is UK going to attack India in support of these UK based Sikhs? Else how will it affect India?

If it isnt going to affect India, why did India write to Britain to cancel this event?

A khalistan movement abroad will surely effect India, as it may fuel an insurgency back home.

There is no insurgency in India. Khalistanis abroad can do jack in India.

India asked to cancel the event as a wanted man from India is leading this event.

Jay Jay Khalistan.

I hope someday the oppressed Sikhs brothers in India get to live with dignity and enjoy freedom in their sacred homeland of Khalistan which is currently being forcibly occupied by Indian Union.

Pakistan should be at the forefront of providing all the assistance required for Sikhs to establish their homeland in Indian Punjab.

The point of a protest is to raise awareness of the issue. They have been successful it seems as the Indian govt has asked the UK ( unsuccessfully) to ban the demonstrations. Again, I must repeat, these protesters are calling for the Sikh homeland in Punjab not the UK. You can continue to question their cause, but as you so eloquently put it, you can do jack about it. Absolutely jack all.

Khalistan without Faisalabad, Lahore and Rawalpindi wouldn't be Khalistan at all.
Its time Pakistanis who are so concerned about plight of Sikhs in India show some more solidarity displaying their big heartedness by gifting all these areas to the cause of their Sikh brothers.

Why do you bother explaining something that is self-explanatory.

World is connected and people protest for other people in different part of the world.

If a BJP and RSS supporters can't comprehend this concept then let it be.

UK can't even protect its own culture from the menance of multi kulti, and india is asking it to ban protests that are not UK's concern. UK is now a petri dish.. shallow and full of "culture".

I hope they serve Amritsari fish and chips in this event.

How is the situation in North America?
Since you are a NRI now , would you like to take part in such proceedings in nearby future in Chicago considering how your people are persecuted in India as per the narrative on this board?

Why are Indians here being so hypocritical? Sikhs shouldn't be able to decide whether to have independence but balochis should get a referendum on whether to be independent. Atleast be consistent. Most Sikhs and balochis want to be part of India and Pakistan respectively anyway but if u are gonna make fun of the Sikhs who want independence then make fun of the balochis who claim to want independence also. If u are not willing to give Sikhs a referendum then don't complain when balochis also don't get one.

Posters from this board aren't twisting these protesters arms to march in the UK. We are just bemused bystanders, please don't try to push the blame for the Sikh independence struggle on our wonderful membership.

My apologies Captain but my remarks weren't directed at the aboriginal Brits.

Indians(like me) who claim to be champions of Balochi nationalism do this to counter Pakistan's involvement in insurgency movements in India and their fake concerns for certain groups on this side of the border.
Frankly I couldn't two hoots about residents of Balochistan and their relevance for me diminishes outside the internet world of trolling.

UK citizens want the right to have a country in India? Is there anything more ridiculous?

Ya sure lahore wud be the capital. Khalistan without lahore is like patiala peg without ice ,khalistan without lahore is like biryani without chicken ,khailistan without lahore is like lassi without malai ,khalistan without sugar is like sweets without sugar.

There is no Khalistan and there was no Khalistan! It is a pipe dream shown to the Sikh's by the illiterate Bhindranwale who had no political understanding or mileage whatsoever. According to his prediction Khalistan was to be formed after his death, that was 34 years back and we are no nearer to it in 2018. Cheap slogans or rap Music do not form a country as the Sikh community seem to think. More chance of ET landing on earth than Khalistan becoming a reality. If need be the Indian military will do another operation Blue star on them then again most Sikh's in Indian Punjab seem disinterested in this movement. It is only a few thousand Sikh's living abroad who are keeping this Khalistan thing alive in the UK or Canada. The British government knows that having a few Sikh's shout some cheap slogans will do little harm so let them do it.

I am not here to defend or judge the stupidity of UK Sikhs, it's not my fight, I am just a neutral observer. My position is to explain the UK stance on this, and we will defend their right to peacefully demonstrate within the law. India's request to cancel the event was considered and rejected according to our own constitution - which we can agree has produced one of the leading first word countries of the world.

India is saying the ISI is behind this Sikh gathering on the 12th!!!:misbah

A classic case of "Don't do as I do! do as I say!"

Lol , what do you think, it's a very small minority , Indian GOV should stop reacting to it, none of the ones asking for referundum would move back anyway and imagine Khalistans first PM being Badal lol.

"From Little Acorns Do Mighty Oaks Grow"

Good to see. British empire used to rule India and punjabis were really helpful during the rule so now the favor has to be returned.

In UK they can grow a Oak forest.
Yes they can. How observant of you.

If you believe that this Khalistan group has no support and is a non-starter in India, then India has nothing to worry about. If they wish to make noises in England by holding legal and peaceful demonstrations in the UK, and it's not going to affect India, then why all the fuss? Why does India wish to stop it?

If there is man wanted in India who's leading the demonstration, then that is an issue of extradition, and nothing to do with whether or not a peaceful and legal demonstration should be allowed in London.

From the UK point of view, this man is not under arrest, and as such he is allowed to do whatever he wants whilst in the UK, as long as it's legal and peaceful. And that includes leading a legal and peaceful demonstration.

India basically told the UK that a man wanted for murder and terrorist activities is leading the event.

The guy is a member of Babbar Khalsa, a banned organisation in UK.

Khalistan lol. It has no takers in India.

Quite clearly, our successful country the United Kingdom of Great Britain have our own standards for individuals and organisations to express their views in a peaceful and law abiding manner. Rather than carp about movements which have no followers (according to you), The Indians would be far better not giving the Khalistan movement so much attention.

You would be better served learning from the Brits how to conduct public demonstrations in a tolerant and pleasing manner. If you are ever in the UK I shall invite you to attend such an event and give you a tour of London where you can see how a modern advanced society operates in the 21st century.

We do not copy paste from others. Small countries in need of crumbs from the west may follow what others do.

India is a big country with a big economy and resources. We make our own laws and rules.

Why dont you give a tour to fellow UK citizens who are running off to ISIS or who are involved in terrorist activities and teach them the virtues of a tolerant society.

Do you know what concepts Indian law is based on?

Hint, one of them is its British common law.

They would also be better served by respecting the UK law.

Mr Saini, from Smethwick, was arrested in 2010 by West Midlands Police, as part of a joint investigation with Indian police, and later released without charge.

The UK has no evidence this chap has committed any crime and therefore is free to protest. Besides he's one of many who protest on this subject.

One of them. Not all of them. There were ideas taken from various constitutions and then they were changed according to indian scenario and used.

Khalistan movement is growing worldwide at a rapid rate due to the extreme Hindu government in India.

I have had considerable first hand discussions with Indian students ( of various religions) who mention that conditions in many parts of India are very tense and not as rosy as internet Hindus like to claim.

There were protests last time Modi came to visit too, however as India is a rogue state with scant regard for the rights of minorities I doubt that the protests of Sikhs who moved to the UK would have made much effect.

Perhaps if they were protesting beef eating they would get more sympathy from Joshila and his ilk because as we know cow lives are more important than the lives of Muslim and Sikhs in BJP India.

Which novel is this plot a part of?

Which novel is this plot a part of?

I don't know. I am merely relaying the concerning conversations I have held with trusted Indian acquaintances.

Is your opinion somehow more valid than theirs? Or more valid than the thousands of Sikhs protesting around the world?

You don't have a monopoly on the truth my friend.

BJP will one day have to pay for the utter disregard they showed to golden temple during Op bluestar and their role in Sikh genocide of 1984.
Good to see Sikh students seeing the reality and passing on the information to their much concerned Pakistani friends.

I for a fact know that Sikhs who have immense love for beef have been made to suffer in India due to the recent anti beef laws which have impacted the large, traditional beef industry in Punjab thus increasing the unemployment and also depriving the Punajbis from the famous beef cuisines for which the state has been known.

As I already mentioned before in this thread, British Pakistanis should show their solidarity and actively support this movement. Perhaps writing a petition on change.org against the Hindu govt of India?

Oh and also it would be nice if they could pay attention to the steadily dwindling population of Sikhs in Pakistan.
I know it doesn't get you brownie points on internet but as the saying goes "Jo sheeshe k ghar me rahte hain...."

You are a Bengali CJ, best worry about the plight of Muslims in your state.
I live in Rajasthan, a neighboring state to Punjab and seen through my own eyes the sufferings Sikhs have to face on a daily basis when their crap music videos are panned by the Hindu critics as a part of larger Hindutva propaganda against the soulful Punajbi music.

Personally I have no interest in supporting to the movement in petitions etc. They have enough clout to do their own thing.

Any support will be seen as hijacking their cause. I am with their noble cause in spirit as my heart is with all oppressed people such as Palestinians and Rohingya ( coincidentally Indians revel in the plight of these two groups too)

When Sikhs start protesting in the UK about Pakistan perhaps then we can equate their suffering to the plight of their Indian cousins.

There's a simple answer to that, if they have run off to join ISIS, then they are no longer in this country, so even if I wanted to give them a tour it would be logistically impossible. What a strange response to a friendly gesture of welcome, to refer to an unrelated terrorist group. What on earth made you suddenly think of them?

You may feel that India can't learn anything from modern first world countries, but arrogance won't wipe out poverty or rape culture. I would suggest some humility and introspection would go a long way.

“It is the principle of the right to self-determination and the common occupying power – India – that brings Sikh and Kashmiri people on a joint platform in their democratic quest for freedom of their homelands.”

Made me remember that a Kashmiri pro independence leader addressed a group of Khalistanis in Punjab :

It's a really small minority of Sikhs that want khalistan tbh. I don't see it surviving. As mentioned above khalistan needs parts of Pakistani punjab aswell such as Lahore as Pakistani punjab also has Sikhs. This would make the movement impossible as both India and Pakistan would totally reject giving land to Sikhs.

People running to ISIS means the society at large is becoming extremist. So they need to be taught the virtues of the modern tolerant british society.

I appreciate your gesture. But i have been UK quite a few times as a part of my extended family lives in London and chelmsford, though my last trip was sometime ago. May be we can have coffee the next time i am in UK.

Every country has its own needs. No one can blindly copy paste laws from elsewhere.

People running to ISIS does not mean that society at large is becoming extremist, that would be like saying if there is a Khalistan rally in London, then the Sikhs at large must be extremist. I think we would do well to see things in perspective instead of overreacting and treating every piece of news about some group as representative.

Quite clearly the UK, thus far, has not accepted that accusation from India regarding this man. Otherwise the UK would have arrested him, and maybe even prosecuted him themselves.

It literally says in the article:

"The paper reported that the rally is being funded by Sikhs for Justice and that one of the key figures linked with the event is a Birmingham-based activist, Paramjeet Singh Pamma, wanted in India for his alleged involvement in bombings in 2010 and for the killing the previous year of Rulda Singh, a political leader who worked for the Hindu nationalist cause.

I'm sure the UK are competent enough, more so than cricketjoshila, to question those accused of terrorist allegations.

More fake news being spread in order to taint a movement found not acceptable to supporters of the Indian govt. While I can appreciate that the Khalistan movement will not be approved by many Indians for good reason, at least we should check our sources before maligning individuals carelessly.

The right to self-determination is a right. If they're protesting in a peaceful manner which doesn't lead to any violence and they're not exploiting the rights of free speech then I see no wrong.

It doesn't mean I agree or disagree with the actual cause they're protesting. It's more the protesting itself that should cause no harm.

Agree. Sikhs deserve a homeland. Similarly, hindu nation is the right of hindus, and hindutva movement is legit and moral. Not just having majority of a particular religion, but having the country run under the guidance of the majority religion where no one dares to insult our faith and those who do, are punished or exiled.

In what dimension? Sikhs number 30,000 in entire Pakistan.

Pakistan Punjab has fraction of them living with 100 million muslim Punjabis.

They citizens of UK can have any referendum and use their right to self determination. But they cant have a referendum on what should happen in India.

Like many Pakistani friends, I too had the experience and discussion with my Punjabi friends (especially Sikhs) about Khalistan movement. Also it was all over the news. Violent protesters all over Punjab. Curfew being implemented. Lacs of Sikhs being sent to jails.

This was when i used my powers and went to an alternate reality. World was on the mercy of saint and powerful nations like North Korea, Iran, Pakistan etc who were keeping tabs on rogue nations like USA, UK etc

Superman, Batman, Ironman, Harry Potter were villains and it was the duty of Joker, Lord Voldermort etc keep the cities peaceful.

Then I decided to return back. That sight was very depressing.

They citizens of UK can have any referendum and use their right to self determination. But they cant have a referendum on what should happen in India.

Ofcourse they can.... do what they like.

They chorus will only get louder and louder... better get use to it.

That's how you would feel about Nawaz, Altaf in UK too along with all the money IK wants to bring back?

Khalistan is unlikely to happen. Sadly, no matter how much a place wants independence, the murder of young Sikhs and the stoning of young Sikh women in India means that people won't dare to protest.

I hope the pakistani govt or any ISI etc stay well clear of the khalistan movement. People forget all of their holy shrines (or most of them) are in Pakistan. Perhaps they should look to join Pakistan instead?? lol

And you can get used to it leading nowhere ,along with your other 100 protests.

The sight of thousands of Sikhs peacefully marching is giving you guys anxiety.... I get that.

You and I are not Sikhs, whether it goes anywhere or not, it's upto them to decide. why are against them voicing their opinions that you do not like?

No one really cares about Khalistan apart from a few hardliner Sikhs. Seems only the Indian govt get ants in their pants over every little demonstration. Beats me why they make such a fuss over it thereby giving oxygen to a seemingly minor cause.

Yes they can have a Khalistan in UK. May be along with a Kashmir. Because the effect in India will be Nada Zilch Zero.
