Played decently earlier for his 38 and is now looking good again.

Will this bring a change in fortunes for him? Can he do a Rohit Sharma...

Funnily enough, Misbah is the captain.

Whether he opens, bats at no 3,4,5,6 or 7. Nothing's gonna get fixed unless he fixes himself and starts using brains and start learning.
Shots and timing wise he's always had it all.
It's always been his temperament, discipline, fitness and stubborness that has been his bane.

What innings from him today second game were some monster shots. Good for him and the players, test cricket is dying and no one cares about random one day series they mean nothing. All about leagues now and big games big money. What a future looking forward to it.

He always does well on smaller grounds.

Used to dominate in the HK Sixes too.

Lets give his due - good innings and maybe has turned a new leaf.

I don't think PAK ever backed Umar properly - here I am talking about backing a player, that's facilitating a player into a role that fits his strengths & hides his weaknesses; I am not talking about just selecting someone lot more times than probably he deserved. Problem is with the think tank that believes someone should average 50 at 100 SR (Obviously that's the dream, but then AB de Villiars will become average like others). He was never tried as opener for the fear on nonexistent swing/seem movement of new ball. By nature, Umar has a tendency to play in air, which again suggests, he should have been tried when 9 men are within 25 metres, rather than when the ball is soft and 9 men are on edge of inner or outer ring.

When someone is going after the new ball, obviously, he'll have lots of hits & misses - but that's a calculated risk, one out of 6 innings is more than acceptable if that one wins a match. Umar (or any such opener) shouldn't have duel KPI - that's SR and average. For a 7 match series (ODI), it's perfectly OK if one opener has a series like 7 (13), 0 (2), 35 (23), 3 (7), 127 (91), 29 (24) & 12 (12) - that's 213 (170) for an stats like 30.43/125.29. It's perfectly acceptable, because that 127 should win almost any match, that 35 & 29 should give a quick start and the other 4 are not costing much - next men have the time to build. Problem is, though that 127 (91) is good enough once in every 7 innings because that's absolute match winner against any team - expectation is a repeat of that too frequently, which Umar isn't capable of.

I didn't see him today, hopefully I'll see some part tomorrow - if he is fit enough, he should be called back for NZ and be given one last chance for 8 innings as opener. If it clicks, it's the best investment for PAK team, because not it's not only about a free scoring opener, but it means a regular workable WK can be part of starting XI (why it's critical for PAK team, is an open secret)

In T20, any given day he should be an automatic starter, as opener. If required, for a better balance, he can keep (And Sarfraz play as a batting Captain).

He should have been given a 5 - 6 innings go as an opener. Ideal combination with Fakhar Zaman.

TBH that was a pretty average knock(low SR) considering the format and especially the strike rates that the other team batted with.

Misbah has nothing to lose now so ofc he would.

Give him a WC game to play and he will send in his college friend Younis Khan.

Naujawan aj kal pani se parhaiz kar raha hoga

Sohail Khan scored 46 (14) in the Hong Kong sixes final recently, let's make him the LOI opener.

If we want to judge him as an opener, I wuldnt use this format to judge him. He still has work to do to get back into the Pakistan team.

Ideal format for players who lack discipline.

Basically they can go in and slog from ball 1.

Fail in the playoff. Infact he fails whenever there is a need.
This format is like a jackpot for these failures with small boundries + they don't have to build an inning. Ofcourse what umar knows about building an inning.
I think his oqaat is not more than 30 runs.

So T10 will be a format for all discards from other formats!

End of thread.

This is precisely what the case is.

Slogging isn't as easy as it is made out to be though.

Also, he isn't really good at it as well. Saw his innings, and he was just not good enough to do anything. Got tonked on the head and continued to swing terribly and got out to a meek shot as well.

He should have been playing Quaid e Azam trophy to win back his spot

No ambition at all

Would you rather get paid 10 times more playing a lucrative league and play against the cream team mates of your country to get back into the frame or a jobber tournament like the Qaid-e-Azam trophy?

Lol this a joke micky mouse stuff, and you think this is going to get him back to test team

He has two centuries in QEA trophy so far, was doing well so he should have continued. Like it or not this is the premium tournamnet, 99% cricketers get selected for Pakistan test team after preforming in this tournament.

Yeah I wholeheartedly agree with you, this makes sense.

But knowing these guys, a mercenary is a mercenary.
