WASHINGTON: A US official on Friday said Washington is “deeply concerned” at the release from house arrest of Hafiz Saeed who is accused of masterminding the 2008 assault in the Indian city of Mumbai.

Hafiz Saeed, who had been under house arrest since January, was ordered freed by the Lahore High Court this week.

US State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said Saeed’s organisation, Lashkar-e-Taiba, was responsible for the deaths of hundreds of civilians, including American citizens.

“The Pakistani government should make sure that he is arrested and charged for his crimes,” Nauert said in a statement.

The $10 million bounty for Saeed first offered in 2012 still stands, Nauert added.

Yet another statement for Indian public consumption, and lo and behold it's made the front page of ToI as expected. Many in India are so dumb that they seek ratification through these ornamental statements from the USA every now and then. And it's always 'an unnamed official' or 'an ex-Senator' who makes them, not anybody particularly of note.

Fact remains, if the US wanted this Hafiz Saeed's head on a plate, they would have it. They didn't spare a drop of sweat hunting down Osama bin Laden, did they?

And the only reason India is looking at the US is because of the small number of Americans that died during 26/11. RIP and all that, but what about the butcher's bill of 200+ dead Indians in the same attack? If the Indian top brass are so concerned and seething with rage at Hafiz Saeed they would do something about it themselves.

Yup true. If Us really cared they would have server Hafiz's head on a platter by now. It's pretty low on their priority list. Almost the same reason why India isn't going to do jack in Afghanistan either to appease or help the Us as a token of good faith.

Mind your own business

You fail to understand that as long as he takes refuge there he is as much a threat to Pakistan as much as he is a threat to India or other surrounding neighbors. It's not helping anyone in reality. It's just giving birth to more obl, planning attacks or recruiting more Pakistanis for a misguided cause which isn't going to end well for them and their families. If Pakistan does hand him over, as naive as it sounds it would make better relations with India in time, making way for a united India and Pakistan which will only do good for everyone. Both India and Pakistan are only playing into Us and Russia's hands, heck even China's hands by not seeing this.

Don't whine when they stop your indaad then.

They already did lol... Pakistan is not dependent on US anymore. Heck they refused to sell us F-16 at concessional rates and Pak refused to buy then they themselves came back with offers lol.

Also most of what US pays us is not imdad but money for the services we provide. Even the toilet paper of US army in Afghanistan goes through Pakistan. No payment = no toilet paper. Good luck.

He has not broken any law in Pakistan to be detained indefinitely or to be handed over to anyone esp an enemy nation India.

Americans are just playing games with India and it's India who needs to wake up and understand this. All the Americans care about is selling weapons to India and using them for geo political advantages, while India gains little.

I don't understand, is he guilty of the crime? if so then why are Pakistanis on this thread defending the idea of freeing a man that is capable of killing or planning the killing many many people.

This!!
Couldn’t have said better. There are few regular posters who fell under this category.

New Delhi: 26/11 mastermind Hafiz Saeed was today sentenced to jail for 31 years by an anti-terror court in Pakistan.
Hafiz Saeed, the founder of the terror group Lashkar e Taiba and the chief of Jamaat ud Dawa, was sentenced in two cases. The court also ordered all his assets be seized and fined the UN-designated terrorist ₹ 3,40,000.

Reports suggest a mosque and madrassa that Hafiz Saeed allegedly built will be taken over.

Hafiz Saeed, 70, has been sentenced in multiple cases of terror financing in the past. In 2020, he was sentenced to 15 years in jail.

He has spent years in and out of detention in varying forms in Pakistan, sometimes under house arrest. But he roams freely across the country while addressing incendiary speeches targeting India with impunity.

He was arrested in 2019, just before Pakistan PM Imran Khan's visit to the US. At the time, US President Donald Trump had tweeted that Saeed had been detained after a 10-year search.

Saeed was travelling to Gujranwala from Lahore to appear before an anti-terrorism court when he was arrested by the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) of Punjab.

The US House Foreign Affairs Committee noted that Saeed had been arrested and released eight times since 2001.

Hafiz Saeed has been blamed for the terror attack on Mumbai on November 26, 2008, in which 166 people were killed.

Hafiz Saeed being sacrificed by the Pakistan establishment is a huge news, 31 years sentence !! Next step maybe opening trade with India.

For a crime he committed in 2008, 14 years later , what was so rush to finalize the verdict in a hurry ?

Not to worry. Just change his name. Operate as usual.

Who knows Imran will release him because amreeka told us to arrest him.

Anyways the arrest is just sham most likely. He would be treated with guards and all and have the best room in the jail cell or in the house he is arrested.

I have seen the guy move on gt road with huge number of followers and police protection when he carries his rally to islamabad.

Usa should had made pakistan to arrest him and deliver him to india instead if this sham
