After a nail-biting race, the Democratic candidate took an unbeatable lead in Pennsylvania - taking its 20 Electoral College votes and past the 270 needed to gain the White House.

It makes Donald Trump, who is currently at one of his golf clubs in Virginia, the first one-term president since 1992, when George HW Bush failed to clinch four more years.

In a written statement released by his campaign, Mr Trump refused to concede the election and accused his opponent of "rushing to falsely pose as the winner".

"Beginning Monday, our campaign will start prosecuting our case in court to ensure election laws are fully upheld and the rightful winner is seated," he added.

"I will not rest until the American People have the honest vote count they deserve and that Democracy demands."

But president-elect Mr Biden has accepted victory and announced in his first statement that "democracy beats deep in the heart of America".

"With the campaign over, it's time to put the anger and the harsh rhetoric behind us and come together as a nation," he said.

"It's time for America to unite. And to heal. We are the United States of America. And there's nothing we can't do, if we do it together."

Mr Biden's path to power looked in doubt when he failed to make early, convincing gains in areas like Ohio, Texas and Iowa.

And while counting continued, Mr Trump made incendiary claims about ballot stuffing and accused his opponents of "fraud" - without providing any evidence.

He even tried to claim victory early, declaring in an address to the nation from the White House: "We will win this and as far as I'm concerned we already have won it."

But Mr Biden, who will be the oldest sitting president ever, urged supporters to "keep the faith" and wait until all votes had been counted.

As the hours wore on, Mr Biden finally started gaining ground - and flipped the first red state to blue in Wisconsin.

The Trump campaign immediately demanded a recount due to "reports of irregularities", and launched legal action to try to halt counting in Pennsylvania.

Mr Trump then went one step further and claimed victory in three states where no result had yet been declared - North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Georgia.

But Mr Biden hit back, telling him: "We the people will not be silenced; we the people will not be bullied; we the people will not surrender."

The former vice-president to Barack Obama also said "it is clear" he was on course to win, having clinched bigger margins in crucial swing states than Mr Trump won them by in 2016.

Mr Trump has said he may contest Mr Biden's White House win in the Supreme Court.

In the hours before the race came to an end, Mr Trump was still insisting he had won, tweeting: "I WON THIS ELECTION, BY A LOT!"

But Twitter stepped in to censure the post with a note saying: "Official sources may not have called the race when this was tweeted."

Analysis: How Joe Biden paved his path to power - and what comes next for divided America
By Cordelia Lynch, US correspondent

Joe Biden has done what Democrats nominated him to do - win back the Rust Belt to win back the White House.

He did it by getting back the white voters who deserted the Democratic Party four years ago.

Among them, some of the non-college educated voters that couldn't find it in themselves to vote for Hillary Clinton.

But much more critical to his success were the college educated voters in the suburbs and densely populated cities; Mr Biden is the beneficiary of demographic change.

Back in March in the South Carolina primary, it was black voters that helped secure his nomination when he was struggling.

Eight months later, it is black voters in Philadelphia, Detroit and Milwaukee who have helped push him over the line once again.

With it, Mr Biden achieved something monumental - more votes than any presidential candidate in US history, passing the 69.4 million record that Barack Obama set in 2008.

At a time of unprecedented discord, his call for unity, stability and civility resonated.

But it wasn't a landslide and while Democrats retain control of the House they suffered some critical losses.

The control of the Senate also hangs in the balance. Without it, passing legislation will be very, very challenging.

Can bi-partisan Mr Biden work with the other side in such a divided climate? The answer to that will define his presidency.

Moment of silence for the trolls. The nightmare is over. The reality TV show has reached its climax.

While the Senate stays in GOP hands - the Iran deal, Paris Accords and aid to the Palestinians can be re-established without Congress so make good on your promises President-elect Biden.

Rudy Guilani, on behalf of the president, speaks in Pennsylvania, about an "extremely troubling" situation.

Introducing people behind him, he says poll watchers will claim they could not watch any of the mail-in ballot counting.

He tells reporters that mail-in ballots were not inspected by poll-watchers.

"If you have nothing to hide with mail-in ballots, you will allow inspection," he says.

Mr Guiliani claims that some of the ballots had the same handwriting on, and that several dead people had voted in the state.

Statement by president-elect Joe Biden - it's time to unite and heal

"I am honoured and humbled by the trust the American people have placed in me and in vice president-elect Harris.

"In the face of unprecedented obstacles, a record number of Americans voted. Proving once again, that democracy beats deep in the heart of America.

"With the campaign over, it's time to put the anger and the harsh rhetoric behind us and come together as a nation.

"It's time for America to unite. And to heal.

"We are the United States of America. And there’s nothing we can’t do, if we do it together."

Trump statement - This is not over

"We all know why Joe Biden is rushing to falsely pose as the winner, and why his media allies are trying so hard to help him: they don’t want the truth to be exposed.

"The simple fact is this election is far from over. Joe Biden has not been certified as the winner of any states, let alone any of the highly contested states headed for mandatory recounts, or states where our campaign has valid and legitimate legal challenges that could determine the ultimate victor.

"In Pennsylvania, for example, our legal observers were not permitted meaningful access to watch the counting process. Legal votes decide who is president, not the news media.

"Beginning Monday, our campaign will start prosecuting our case in court to ensure election laws are fully upheld and the rightful winner is seated.

"The American People are entitled to an honest election: that means counting all legal ballots, and not counting any illegal ballots. This is the only way to ensure the public has full confidence in our election.

"It remains shocking that the Biden campaign refuses to agree with this basic principle and wants ballots counted even if they are fraudulent, manufactured, or cast by ineligible or deceased voters. Only a party engaged in wrongdoing would unlawfully keep observers out of the count room – and then fight in court to block their access.

"So what is Biden hiding? I will not rest until the American People have the honest vote count they deserve and that Democracy demands."

Trump was on golf course in Virginia when news broke :)

Keir Starmer congratulates Biden...

The Labour Party leader has reacted to Joe Biden’s win in the US presidential election.

He said: "Congratulations to Joe Biden on his election as President of the United States of America.

"He ran a campaign on the values that we in the United Kingdom share - decency, integrity, compassion and strength.

"And I want to congratulate Kamala Harris on being elected vice-president, the first woman of colour to take that role.

"Their victory is one for hope and unity over dishonesty and division. Millions of Americans of all backgrounds and ages have come together to vote for a better, more optimistic future.

"This is also an important moment for the world.

"It is a chance to reassert America's place as a force for good on the world stage. A nation that will work with Britain and other allies to defeat this pandemic and fight climate change.

"Joe Biden and the Democrats have always shared Labour’s values and the links between our two parties remain strong.

"I am looking forward to building on this and forging an even stronger relationship between the UK and the USA."

'Dawning of a new day of hope for America': Speaker Pelosi congratulates Biden

Speaker Nancy Pelosi has offered her congratulations to Joe Biden and Kamala Harris, saying: "Today marks the dawning of a new day of hope for America.

"A record-shattering 75 million Americans cast their ballots to elect Joe Biden president of the United States – a historic victory that has handed Democrats a mandate for action."
She said the president-elect would "finally begin to crush the coronavirus" and would become a "unifier who values faith, family and community, and who will work tirelessly to heal our nation".

Speaker Pelosi added: "Working together, we have the opportunity to deliver extraordinary progress for the people."

Despite GOP retaining the Senate, you can re-enter the Iran deal, Paris Accords and re-establish aid to the Palestinians without Congress.

Time to make good on your promises President Elect.

Isn’t there going to be a run-off for the Georgia senate in January? If Democrats win would that change anything?

It's all on those two Georgia run-offs, but it's gonna be hard for them to win both to flip the Senate to be honest.

Oh, and ending US support for the Saudi war in Yemen.

Congress, both Democrats and Republicans, have ALREADY voted to do so but Trump vetoed it.

The Saudi airforce is entirely dependent on foreign logistical assistance. Washington could ground it overnight. This is why elections matter, it's not a goddamn trolling game.

Make good on your promise and end the Yemenis suffering.

I'm pretty sure that Trump's supporters won't take this defeat lightly and there will be some pretty ugly scenes in the coming days.

Sad day for politics, but on the brightside, Liberals will screw up the next 4 years and USA will be in worse shape than it is now.

Laughing at those who believe Biden will reverse Trump's Iran, Paris, and China decisions.

Biden will however start another war in the ME; and forget Yemen, these liberals don't understand how the Saudis influence USA through the Petrodollar.

Still guaranteed 4 more years of liberal tears on MSM, and TrumpTV. Trumpism is also going to explode; looking forward to the riots!

Pence 2024.

Joe Biden winning the US Elections over Donald Trump, is no different to the US population choosing to drown to death, over being burnt to death.

Both horrible options, but one marginally more humane than the other.

With Biden declared president-elect, what happens now?

Far from twiddling its collective thumbs until inauguration day, America’s democratic machine has plenty of work to do to formalise the process of swapping one president for another.

There is of course still some counting left to do for plenty of states across the country – and it could take weeks.

Once all that counting is done, states also begin certifying the results to essentially formalise what has been declared. This is particularly important in states where a recount may be ordered, such as what Donald Trump has pushed for in Georgia. This should all be done by the end of November, but can stretch into the first week or so of next month.

States are mandated by law to have basically signed off on their election results in full by 8 December – any recounts and disputes must be settled and a winner determined once and for all.

Come 14 December, members of the Electoral College cast their vote for president. With Joe Biden having secured more electoral votes in the election, it means there will be more members backing him than there will be backing Donald Trump. These votes are cast in the electors’ respective states and are sent to Washington.

After the Christmas break, Congress (that’s the House of Representatives and the Senate) will meet on 6 January to count the electoral votes and officially declare the winner. This will be presided over by the vice president, who is still Mike Pence.

Two weeks later, the big day arrives! Inauguration day will fall on 20 January, when the new vice president and president are sworn into office. Kamala Harris will go first, followed by Joe Biden. You can expect to see plenty of famous faces, including presidents of the past.

Everyone should have atleast waiting for the US Supreme Court ruling on things before getting into congradulatory mode

So which country would Biden attack first. He has a long list considering his history of toppling regimes and installing puppets.

I am a life long republican and don't really like leftist politics all that much

So sane people have spoken

This is my president, and we are back stronger than ever before

He was destroying our institutions we needed a change and Biden is the perfect candidate

know its time to get to work and focus on real issues

he is a doofus. Guiliani will be in t he doghouse with Trump once he goes back to him and says "Donnie, there is nothing i can do, they are telling me the people actually voted for Biden and they wont throw out their votes just because you said so"

Congrats to Biden and his supporters, they are only 2 short of Senate majority and have everything going in their favor, hopefully can make a difference.

In 4 years I can guarantee those cheering for Biden/Harris will be blaming these 2 for the mess USA will be in. Actually, make that 1 year.

I don't want to believe in Deep state but if anyone was to give into the conspiracy clearly Biden and Harris do seem to be Deep state than Trump.. (considering how Kamala was nowhere close to Presidential race).

Same rubbish wrapped in a rainbow flag instead of the confederate flag.

There you go again. I pointed out to you last month that red states like Alabama and Kentucky were the biggest dependents on welfare but you ran away and never responded.

Can we get an answer this time ?

Do you know Biden's history and why the Democrat candidates all dropped out and rallied behind him?

Everywhere, man. In PA, mostly white rural areas have 95% white population and without any well paying jobs, they rely on welfare.

I would say overall whites without unemployment rely a lot more on the welfare programs than minorities.

While Biden is a better option than Trump, I wouldn't expect much.

That said, mind to share what you read? (an article, no books please). I might give it a try when I'm bored.

I just google his background but the BBC News just did a little piece.
I did not know that he first became senator in 1972 and six months after that he lost his wife and daughter in a car crash.. his two sons survived.

He was sworn in at the hospital bedside of his son.

They should a video of him on the senate floor imploring Clinton to take a side and into go into the Balkan's where Muslims were being slaughtered.

They showed him criticising the government and the world for supporting the Aparthide Government in South Africa and his passionate speech for the blacks of South Africa..

So wait, we have people who like Biden because the MSM say so, but never did the research, and are now just reading about Biden? I wonder it they did the same with Trump.

Talk about putting the cart before the horse. There's a word for people who believe in something without doing the research.

If there's a deep state Biden and Harris won't be the ones making major foreign policy decisions, they'll just be there to sign on the dotted line in public. They might get more leeway at home in matters like granting equal rights to transexuals or making dope legal in Missouri.

Exactly. Anyone thinking Biden will reactivate the Iran deal for example has forgotton one small word - Isreal.

Have Putin and China congratulated Biden officially/on twitter?

Brown people celebrating Kamala Harris make me sick

I think it will send a good message, that Americans can accept a strong and determined future Indian-heritage leader who is a woman. Perhaps that will lay the ground for future gay male leaders from the same community.

Brown people celebrating Kamala Harris make me sick

THIS!!!

Kamala mainly identified with her Indian heritage during the election and we all know why.. :misbah

Otherwise

She has always identified herself as African American.

Congrats Biden, looking forward to seeing WW3 happening under you... Better buckle up..

Joe Biden has said it is "time to heal" the US in his first speech as president-elect, vowing "not to divide but to unify" the country.

"Let's give each other a chance," he said at an event in Delaware addressing those who did not vote for him.

Mr Biden defeated incumbent President Donald Trump following a cliff-hanger vote count after Tuesday's election.

Mr Trump has yet to concede and has not spoken publicly since his defeat was announced while he was playing golf.

The result makes Mr Trump the first one-term president since the 1990s. His campaign has filed a barrage of lawsuits in various states but election officials say there is no evidence that the vote was rigged against him, as he has claimed.

Spontaneous celebrations erupted in major cities after media outlets announced Mr Biden's victory on Saturday. Disappointed Trump supporters demonstrated in some cities but there were no reports of incidents.

Biden: 'We have to stop treating our opponents as enemies'

Addressing cheering supporters in a parking lot in his hometown of Wilmington, Mr Biden said: "I pledge to be a president who seeks not to divide, but to unify; who doesn't see red states and blue states, only sees the United States."

Mr Biden - who has won more than 74 million votes so far, the most ever for a US presidential candidate - hailed the "diverse" support he gathered during the campaign, and thanked African American voters in particular.

But he also reached out to Trump supporters directly.

"It's time to put away the harsh rhetoric, lower the temperature, see each other again, listen to each other again," Mr Biden said, without mentioning his rival in the election. "And to make progress, we have to stop treating our opponents as enemies."

The president-elect, who arrived on stage wearing a face mask, announced that he would form his coronavirus response committee to ensure it is ready to implement decisions from his inauguration day in January, because "that's the only way we can get back to living".

The Trump administration's response to the pandemic was at the centre of the presidential campaign, and drew heavy criticism from Mr Biden, who said his plan would be "built on bedrock science". More than 237,000 Americans have died, more than any other country.

Mr Biden will be 78 when he takes office, making him the oldest first-term president in American history.

In a forceful and eloquent victory speech Saturday night, President-elect Joe Biden vowed to usher in “a time to heal” in America, claiming a moral mandate as well as a political one as he vowed to comfort a bruised and angry nation.

More than a health care plan or a climate proposal, or a biting condemnation of his predecessor, Biden used his victory speech to offer the nation the one thing it truly needed: comfort.

“Now that the campaign is over — what is the people’s will? What is our mandate?” he said. “Americans have called on us to marshal the forces of decency and the forces of fairness. To marshal the forces of science and the forces of hope in the great battles of our time.”

This was what Biden’s campaign was always about: not a particular policy or specific ideology, but the promise to restore the moral authority to the Presidency that had been degraded under President Donald Trump. When he first announced his candidacy in early 2019, he vowed to “restore the soul of America.” Now, nineteen months and one Presidential victory later, he doubled down on that promise.

“Our nation is shaped by the constant battle between our better angels and our darkest impulses,” he said, echoing themes he articulated in his convention speech. “It is time for our better angels to prevail.”

Biden thanked the coalition that elected him — “the broadest and most diverse in history,” he said — and gave a special mention to the African-American community, who stuck by him throughout a primary where it once appeared all was lost for his third run at the White House. “And especially for those moments when this campaign was at its lowest — the African American community stood up again for me,” he said. “They always have my back, and I’ll have yours.”

But he promised to be a President to all Americans, not just those that supported him. “To those who voted for President Trump, I understand your disappointment tonight. I’ve lost a couple of elections myself,” he said. “But now, let’s give each other a chance.”

“I ran as a proud Democrat. I will now be an American President. I will work as hard for those who didn’t vote for me as those who did,” he continued. “Let this grim era of demonization in America begin to end — here and now.”

He also vowed to reach across the aisle, to work with Republicans to get things done. “If we can decide not to cooperate, then we can decide to cooperate,” he said. “And I believe that this is part of the mandate from the American people. They want us to cooperate.”

Biden largely avoided talking about specific policy goals or the nuts and bolts of governing, and instead focused on his promise to restore a sense of honor and decency to the office of the President. The speech defined Biden’s vision of the Presidency as the healer-in-chief, especially after four years of Trumpian divisiveness and chaos, and several months of a global pandemic that has killed more than 230,000 Americans. His Presidency would be about restoring faith in a nation that had nearly lost faith in itself.

At one point, he recited a hymn that had been a favorite of his late son Beau Biden, who died of brain cancer in 2015:

“And He will raise you up on eagle’s wings,

Bear you on the breath of dawn,

Make you to shine like the sun,

And hold you in the palm of His Hand.”

These were the words that offered Beau comfort when he needed it, and they were the words Biden offered Americans in this time of need. “And now, together — on eagle’s wings — we embark on the work that God and history have called upon us to do,” he concluded. “With full hearts and steady hands, with faith in America and in each other, with a love of country — and a thirst for justice — let us be the nation that we know we can be.”
