Nathan Gray, 34, a store employee, told the woman he "hated Muslims" and was going to kill her, police said.

A homeless man in the US has thrown hot coffee in the face of a 21-year-old Muslim woman and called her a “terrorist”.

Nathan Gray, 34, a store employee, told the woman he “hated Muslims” and was going to kill her, police said. Gray walked into a Dunkin Donuts shop in Manhattan on Sunday and asked for a cup of coffee before sitting next to a group of Muslim women, an employee said.

“I gave him coffee and he said something to me about terrorists, but I couldn’t hear what he was saying. He walked away from me and sat next to a group of Muslim women,” the store employee said.

He said the man began talking to them and said “terrorists” while the group tried to ignore him.
“He started talking to them and I could hear him saying, ‘Terrorists!,” he said.

“One woman called him ‘stupid’. So he threw his hot coffee in her face. It was hot, hot coffee. She could have been burned! Then he swung his bag at her and it hit her in the face,” the employee was quoted as saying by the ‘New York Daily News’.

The woman ran outside, and Gray put her in a headlock, police said. Gray has been charged with assault as a hate crime, police said, adding that the victim has refused medical attention.

Disgusting. My advice to all the Muslim women. In this time of high Islamophobia in the west, please stop wearing the hijab or the burka in order to stop making yourself an easy target of hate and abuse from the bigoted. Think about your safety please.

If Middle East woman don't wear Islamic attire, they can easily pass off for a Cuban. The incidents of abuse and assaults will definitely reduce.
There are way too many ignorant people in this world.

Don't know about that, people rarely think I'm a Muslim despite looking very Pakistani. I've had people complain about Muslims, Blacks and affirmative action to me, I think being clean shaven or not wearing a hijab is enough to pass as non muslim

What is a homeless man doing buying coffee in a coffee shop? Seems like a case of blaming your problems on those who look alien to you which is normal for a lot of racists. But once again the media & government are at fault for demonising Muslims daily.

Yeah most racists are losers, the other day an old white guy was complaining to me about political correctness, how you can't say merry christmas anymore (news to me) and affirmative action, he told me recently lost his job a major bank cause he couldn't hire white people and was forced to put up with "poor performances" of minorities, he also complained about Indian H1bs dominating the tech dept at his bank. That guy got scared when I disagreed and gave him an earful, he assumed I was gonna agree with him :))

Yep, people who are doing well or are busy in their own lives have no time to hate and have no reasons to blame others for their personal issues. I've had a few debates with closet racists, they are hidden because they wouldn't say anything to my face. I tend to keep my replies simple as their minds are often simple. If its a case of immigrants, my response is look up the history of the British Empire before complaining about people going to other countries. If it's regarding terrorism, I suggest maybe if your government didn't interfere, invade and occupy others, they wont want to harm you.

I think it's okay to hide your faith in an Islam phobic environment. Some Muslim's however still want to display their Muslimness in public. If so they will be targeted and have to accept it.

My advice to all the Muslim women, is to not listen to The_KING 's advice and make your own decision. Whether or not hijab/burqa is allowed in these times is a matter of debate for scholars. It's not like we can make our own clear cut decisions which are obviously influenced by emotions.

I disagree. These woman should peacefully protest the hideous actions committed by the ignorant racists.

Women are generally more patient than men. So I think that they can take the abuse which is rare to experience for any individuals. Most Muslim women don't really experience this type of hate in America.

They can do that for sure. I am talking about when someone is threatening to kill you, at that moment only saving your life matters. The should fight for there rights whilst accepting that Islam and Muslim haters are increasing in numbers. They have to accept this reality.

Yeah because scholars are always right and we must follow them like blind sheep yeah? Allah has given us all a brain of our own which we can all use to make our own decisions especially when it's got to do with our safety and well being.

Of course we can use our brains, but clearly YOU aren't as I stated that we can't come to CLEAR CUT decisions based on our own thinking.

Why should they stop wearing hijab? Maybe the bigots need to change their way of thinking??

Victim blaming much eh, Mr dont judge me? Sounds like a usual excuse of a society that blames women for dressing "cheap". You pretend hard to be a liberal but you vomit your misogyny every other week. First with how would you like like your wife to dress and now this. One day these lunatics will mess with the wrong person, Inshallah.

Why will they have to just accept it? If i say the white people (lots of muslims believe all white people are christians) should darken their faces with make up when they are in extremist countries so as to pass as non-christians, would that be acceptable?
Nobody has to accept abuse.

They can take action against the abusers but can not really stop people from doing that. Abuse is never acceptable but in the current climate of great Islamaphobia it does and will continue to happen. This is something that Muslim's need to accept in the sense that it can't really be stopped. When people make anti-Muslim comments on the streets it's impossible to take all abusers to court. This applies to people of all faiths.

Disgusting man

hope he ends up in jail and the woman gets a huge payday

usually the only folks who are targeted are bearded men , or hijabis, roaming around in traditional clothing...

Muslim's need to accept abuse?

Imagine if the West Indian blacks and sub-Continental 'browns' had taken that attitide in the UK during the 60's, 70's and 80's (when the likes of the National Front were going around attacking non-whites ), or the Blacks in America and the likes of Martin Luther King Jr. had simply kept quiet and accepted discrimination and segregation? Enough said.

Poor advice indeed. You don't solve problems by running from them, you try to find solutions. An innocent hijab-wearing woman should be able to live her life without threats, harassement just like any other citizen. It is the people who generalize and attack who needs to sort out their lives and views.

I do agree we live in tough times but we can not let the terrorists dictate us. Should be free to wear whatever we wish, one of the basic rights for humans.

Poor The_KING.

He is making a point coming from a good place and actually analyzing the situation in a non emotional way and people are latching onto him like he committed a crime.

When there are genuine problems...the FIRST step you take is to protect your self (right or wrong doesn't matter when it comes to safety). Then work towards correcting the actual problem.

Dumbest advice I've seen on this thread

Whats next, tell Muslims to change their names to something Western?

Or better yet, tell women to start wearing skimpy clothing so they wouldn't think you're Muslim.

Islam stresses the relationship between body and mind. The wearing of the outer garments and veiling of the body leads to veiling of the heart and shielding it from impure thoughts.

The Holy Qur'an tells women to wear an outer covering and to draw their head coverings over their bosoms. It also advises them to cover their faces. However, there is no one type of dress that is compulsory for all Muslim women. The form of the veil adopted varies from country to country. As you have probably seen, Pakistani women wear a long coat with a head scarf that can cover the face, known as a "burqa." Women in the Middle East wear a head covering over long dresses.

The advise for women born and bred in Pakistan who have moved to West would be to maintain the form of hijab/purdah that they used there, i.e., the burqa, with the face covered. Women who work outside the home may take off their hijab/purdah at work, if necessary, but should wear it at all other times.

" Minimum Islamic Purdah " is wearing a loose fitting outer garment and a head scarf. The face may be uncovered, but without makeup. This is adequate for sisters new to Islam, and may be used by others who are unable to use the complete burqa. Generally, Islam requires modesty in dress, with arms and legs covered. Clothes should be loose and the curves of the body should not be discernible, especially in public. A newcomer to Islam should not feel insecure about the way she dresses as long as her dress follows the Islamic code of modesty.

The conduct of a Muslim woman is a very important part of observing hijab/purdah. Whether at work, or among family and friends, a Muslim woman must conduct herself with great propriety and decorum. It is advisable to avoid idle chitchat with the opposite sex, mixed parties and shaking hands with the opposite sex.

These men are such cowards attacking women.
My muslim neighbour was yelled at by a white guy and she has now stopped wearing her head-scarf when she goes out and I agree with her action.People have become very islamophobic . Jaisa desh waisa bhais .

I am sure women can read and understand Islam too. They don't need the advice of every other person on how to live their lives. It should be left on them to dress the way they want to. After all they live in a western country, not North Korea where people can only have certain type of hairstyles.

Am in Germany now. I don't want to invite trouble by wearing a hijab or abaya. A good cap and warm jacket will work perfectly for me. It's already freaking cold out here.

It's pathetic how these tough guys always target women. Imagine the uproar if someone attacked a nun. It's outrageous.

If the foreign legion could wear that in the desert, then a Kerala girl should have no problem with a summer in Germany.

What a waste of skin that fellow. Makes me so angry..

Nobody has to accept abuse.

But it's not suggesting they change their skin colour is it, it's suggesting they alter their style of clothing. The exact same suggestion that would be made to someone western traveling to an Islamic country.

Travelling is different than living. You can't let bigots tell you how to live.

Also how do u know they will stop at the hijab removal? They target sikhs as well. Ask a sikh to remove his turban which is sacred to them and see what he says. These bigots know Muslims are living there and would pick up other traits of muslims and attack them on that basis. Where would u draw a line to say enough is enough??

So if a women wore western clothes whilst living and working in an Islamic country it'd be looked upon fine unlike if they were just travelling?

A Steven Covey story that a lot of people in this thread need to read.

One Sunday morning, on a subway in New York, people were sitting quietly -- some reading newspapers, some lost in thought, some resting with their eyes closed. It was a calm, peaceful scene. Then suddenly, a man and his children entered the subway car. The children were so loud and rambunctious that instantly the whole climate changed.

"The man sat down next to me and closed his eyes, apparently oblivious to the situation. The children were yelling back and forth, throwing things, even grabbing people's papers. It was very disturbing. And yet, the man sitting next to me did nothing.

"It was difficult not to feel irritated. I could not believe that he could be so insensitive to let his children run wild like that and do nothing about it, taking no responsibility at all. It was easy to see that everyone else on the subway felt irritated, too. So finally, with what I felt was unusual patience and restraint, I turned to him and said, "Sir, your children are really disturbing a lot of people. I wonder if you couldn't control them a little more?"

"The man lifted his gaze as if to come to a consciousness of the situation for the first time and said softly, 'Oh, you're right. I guess I should do something about it. We just came from the hospital where their mother died about an hour ago. I don't know what to think, and I guess they don't know how to handle it either.'

"Can you imagine what I felt at that moment? My paradigm shifted. Suddenly I saw things differently, I felt differently, I behaved differently. My irritation vanished. I didn't have to worry about controlling my attitude or my behavior; my heart was filled with the man's pain. Feelings of sympathy and compassion flowed freely. "Your wife just died? Oh, I'm so sorry. Can you tell me about it? What can I do to help?" Everything changed in an instant.

"In the words of Thoreau, 'For every thousand hacking at the leaves of evil, there is one striking at the root.' We can only achieve quantum improvements in our lives as we quit hacking at the leaves of attitude and behavior and get to work on the root, the paradigms from which our attitudes and behaviors flow."

People in this world are too busy arguing with logic (all sound arguments no doubt) but its like Covey getting angry at the man in Subway. Logical but.......

When you try to see the world from another lens.....your entire viewpoint might change or you might get a more clearer perspective on what are your choices and what could be a good course of action for you (whatever it may be).

When in doubt in life, go back to this story.

Will help you a lot.

Uh....I don't get your point. So you're saying we should try to understand the perspective of the man who attacked the Muslim girl? Oh yeah, he was just having a bad day, we should show more compassion for him

Where does even compassion for a bigot come into the picture....

Ok...

Maybe I should have been more elaborate.

Read all of my posts in this thread to get the full picture.

So if they dont, its fair to attack them? Perhaps its not your intention but it seems like you are trying to justify the attack mentioned in the OP.

Muslim countries and Muslims living in those countries have no right to dictate foreigners or people of other religion of how to dress. It's an individual's right to wear whatever He She wants.

Thanks. I'm making a fair point but instead I'm getting criticised for being anti Islamic. People who don't see my point of view don't understand the importance of safety. Your safety is the most important thing, more so than religion.

You are wording it incorrectly. I am saying that due to there being so much Islamaphobia Muslim's need to accept that they are more vulnerable to abuse then any other group, happy? Now don't tell me we don't live in an Islamaphobic world. No one is saying that Muslim people should accept such abuses so stop putting words in to my mouth. Of course they should fight it tooth and nail only that often the police etc are prejudice themselves.
