Viacom 18 has bagged the media rights of BCCI's home international games. The newcomer, which broadcasts live action in the Jio Cinema and Sports 18 television channel, has won both digital as well as television rights, having agreed to shell out a price of INR 67.8 crore per game.
The final number is approximately Rs 7.8 crore higher than the price of the last cycle's value and fulfills the BCCI's condition that the overall value exceeds Rs 60 crore. Altogether, Viacom 18, supported by Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Industries and led by Uday Shankar, who revolutionized the broadcast industry in India during his time as the head of Star India, will contribute Rs 5966.4 crore over five years.
Viacom 18 will broadcast 88 games over the course of five years in an agreement that concludes in March 2028 and commences with a three-match ODI series against Australia at the end of September.
With this, Viacom 18 has bagged the third property from the BCCI. It had previously bagged the digital rights of the Indian Premier League (IPL) and linear and digital properties of Women's Premier League (WPL).
Confirming the development, BCCI secretary said on X (previously Twitter), "Viacom 18 will broadcast 88 games over the course of five years in an agreement that concludes in March 2028 and commences with a three-match ODI series against Australia at the end of September.
"Congratulations @viacom18 for winning the @BCC Media Rights for both linear and digital for the next 5 years. India Cricket will continue to grow in both spaces as after @IPL, and @wplt20, we extend the partnership @bcci Media Rights as well. Together we will continue to capture the imagination of cricket fans."
He also thanked Star India, the outgoing broadcaster. "Also a big thank you to @starindia @DisneyPlusHS for your support over the years. You played a key role in making India Cricket reach its fans across the globe (sic)."
The ultimate figure of Rs 67.8 represents a mere 12 per cent premium compared to the prevailing price. Another perspective reveals that this figure falls below last year's media rights valuation of Rs 78 crore, the price of last year's matches. Another way to look at this is considering that the combined base price for the two packages stood at Rs 45 crore, the final value exhibits a substantial 50 percent increase over the reserved benchmark. As highlighted in the media rights preview, out of the total 88 games, 25 constitute Test matches, while 27 are ODIs and 36 are T20Is.
