Worcester, 8 July 2020:

Pakistan men’s national cricket team have started their preparations for the Test and T20I series against England with a two-day inter-squad scenario-based practice match played on 5-6 July at Worcester.

The team returned to training on 30 June after a gap of more than three months and captain Azhar Ali believes the scenario-based match will prove to be beneficial for the players to ready themselves for the all-important three ICC World Test Championship fixtures against England, which commence from 5 August at Old Trafford.

“We are playing cricket after a long time and it is not going to be easy to start at full-strength,” Azhar said “We have to go step-by-step and I am very happy that the boys utilised their practice time of four days well.”

“No matter how much you practice, playing matches is always more beneficial. If you spend half of your practice’s time in scenario-based matches, it gives you a lot more confidence. Playing this scenario-based match was very important for us.”

In what will be their third Test series in England in the last five years, Pakistan will take on the hosts in a three-match series. The first match will be played at Old Trafford, Manchester, followed by the last two Tests at Ageas Bowl, Southampton, which start on 13 and 21 August.

The Pakistan captain is optimistic that his players will be ready for the challenge when the series arrives.

“Both batsmen and bowlers have adapted to the conditions. The wind was troubling the bowlers initially but they overcame it, which was heartening. Definitely, the players are going to need some time to adjust. Despite the break, they are in good shape which is a positive sign for us.

“All the batsmen batted quite well especially Babar Azam, Asad Shafiq and Abid Ali seemed in total control, Shan Masood adapted well to the conditions and Mohammad Rizwan looked in good shape.

“Mohammad Abbas is our experienced bowler and his presence is of advantage for us as he also keeps guiding the youngsters. He is someone who can be a very important member of the attack for us. Naseem Shah bowled very well in the scenario-based match. He will attain more control as he continues to bowl.”

To prevent the proliferation of Covid-19, the International Cricket Council has introduced changes in its playing conditions which do not permit the bowlers from shining the ball with saliva and handing their sweater, cap or hat to the umpires while bowling.

Azhar said that adjusting to the new regulations was a little difficult, but the practice games will help in the adaptation.

“There are some areas where we have to adapt,” he said. “In this weather, it was only the fast bowlers who sweated so it was a challenge for us to shine the ball. But, that’s something which will change as the weather continues to get warm.

“The most challenging thing, however, was that the bowlers had to put their sweaters and caps outside the boundary rope because of which managing the over rate was getting a bit difficult. Especially, in Yasir Shah’s case he fields in the circle but had to go all the way to the boundary to put his things. But, I am comfortable that we will adapt to these changes as we still have a two-day and two four-day matches to play and they will help us.”

Pakistan are currently under a 14-day quarantine period, following which they will travel to Derbyshire on 13 July.

No mention of Fawad and Sarfraz, whereas he claims Abid looked in "total control".

Quite a contradiction to what was available in the videos...

hm, genius.

Didn't know humans had the ability to determine and extrapolate what happened in 100 overs from a video of 1 minute.

Abid got out 3 or 4 times in that "video of a minute" but that's obviously too difficult for someone with your limited capabilities to extrapolate.

From what I have heard, Fawad Alam is still not viewed as a first team player by Misbah.

My understanding is that if there is a sixth specialist batsman it will be Rizwan, with Sarfraz keeping wicket at 7.

Alternatively Misbah is reportedly open to Rizwan keeping from number 6, with both Shadab and Faheem playing at 7 and 8 (which is my preference and I can't say that I thought that Misbah would accept it).

Either way, my understanding is that Misbah has made it clear that Fawad Alam is a reserve like Kashif Bhatti or Fakhar Zaman or Imran Khan.

Time will tell, but that wasn't my point.

My understanding is Iftikhar will play and not Fawad. Let's see how both perform in side matches.

Old man ifti won’t, next in line has to be Fawad. Anyways wouldn’t take what azhar say as offence just wait until the playing XI is announced for the first test

If it comes down to Fawad and Ifti for a spot in the test team, Misbah will always pick his friend (i.e. the latter).

He handed him his debut during his last England tour (as captain) in 2016 for the crucial Oval test, even though the team was 2-1 down.

When I watched Ifti bat and bowl during that game, he looked so out of place but that won't concern Misbah as long as he's got two working arms and legs.

I think they will play Fawad, don't think ifti will get a chance. Ifti makes me mad though cause he's one of the biggest liars i've seen in cricket, he says he's 30 but he's at least 40 or something.

Fact is you cannot play Fawad if you want but Allah will ask you on the day of judgement why you treated an individual so harshly. Now many people think i'm being dramatic but honestly ask yourself who wants to be treated that works hard like Fawad and other boys in domestic only to be carrying drinks.

Iftikhar will be a sitting duck against the moving ball.

As for Azhar's comments, I really don't want to hear anything out of his mouth frankly. He's an undeserving captain who was only appointed because of his acha bacha personality and seniority.

All I want from him this summer is to blunt the new ball and give our middle order a decent platform. Forget even scoring a hundred, can you at least do that for us Azhar ?

The only thing Azhar needed to say: "Its Babar or bust".

I totally agree with your last paragraph. Unfortunately, Ifti has more chance of being selected than Fawad.

Pakistan cricket would have had a more successful batting unit in the 2010s if Fawad was batting at 5 instead of Misbah.

I like his optimism, but it's a bit early to be saying they've already adapted to the conditions.

Playing chachu ifti will be controversial in my book, i think they will give Fawad his day and they are banking on him struggling. He's played the Duke's ball for years and plus if it's windy which i think it will be in England then the English bowlers will struggle. InshAllah my wish is that Fawad achieve what he sets out to achieve.

Finally someone who speaks the truth. Azhar is the biggest kaam chor in my eyes.

Well some clues given today to Pakistan by the West Indies bowlers on how to trouble the English batsmen.

This England batting line-up even with Root isn't that great.

I stated that in a few threads were people were stating that England batting is more established now

Derby: Test captain Azhar Ali has expressed his joy of having emerging pacers Shaheen Shah Afridi and Naseem Shan in Pakistan’s squad on the tour of England.

While speaking in a podcast released by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), the 35-year-old further said that they have experienced pacers who will share their vast experience with youngsters.

“The way Naseem and Shaheen have bowled in the last three series so as a captain I feel very lucky to have them in my team,” he said.

The other best thing is that we have experience in the shape of Mohammad Abbas and Sohail Khan on this tour, which is an advantage for these youngsters,” he added.

Azhar concluded that batsmen and bowlers struggled initially due to the COVID-19 pandemic that caused a long break from cricket but now they are coming back to their rhythm.

“Batters are in good shape, their balance is great in the nets and in practice matches we played. At the start of the tour, we felt rustiness among players especially bowlers but gradually they are improving in their rhythm and workload.”

It must be noted here that Pakistan and England will play three Tests against England in a bio-secure environment. The Test series will be followed by the T20Is series consists of as many matches.

The batsmen have not settled at all.

In fact I'd say they have really struggled to adjust to the conditions.

You and I both know that this is why the 32 days in England before the First Test should ideally have included 5 or even 6 x Three Day matches.

You can manage the bowlers' workloads easily with a 29 man squad.

But no batsman needs to bat more than around 150 balls in an innings, so they can retire out on 75. But 5 x Three Day matches would have given every batsman 10 proper innings in England to adapt to the conditions.

Whereas ultimately they played 2 x Four Day matches.

5 three day matches with even 1 day’s rest in between adds up to 20 days. They haven’t had that much time if you factor in isolation, Eid, moving from place to place, etc.

Why are matches definitively superior to scenario work or nets? Genuine question as i feel matches surely aren't the be all or end all when it comes to practising or adjusting to new conditions.

I would have thought targeted scenario work or intensive guidance with coaches in the nets was just as important as playing the practice matches.

I never played sports beyond club level and i think it will take someone who played at a very competitive grade to really give us an answer on what sorts of training is most effective.

We've spent our past 4 summers in England with practically the same core team. Except for Babar Azam, I don't feel confident in any batsmen. How are they not used to English conditions?

Well I guess Misbah will be captaining the side from the dugout which isn't a bad thing. But Azhar lacks the tactical nous for a captain be it any format. I actually feel he talks much more than he should. I hope I am proven wrong.
I miss the days when our bowling would choke the opposition into conceding wickets in UAE while capitalizing on scoreboard pressure. Azhar in his ODI stint totally lacked it, and while Sarfraz was good in T20is, our ODI team was more intent on players rather than the actual games. We lost both series against Aus and Eng just to give players a chance to give their account for the world cup. We were awful in NZ in 2018 and the asia cup as well. The only good thing to come out 2017-19 period was Babar coming to his own and Haris improving a lot. Fakhar still needs a lot of work on his game.

Statements like these is another example of nonsensical leadership. Azhar is essentially raising expectations for the fan base, without a need or a benefit for the team. If anything, further builds up pressure on the team.

Would you like him to say : We are doomed, please pray for us?

Azhar needs to stand up with bat. If he battles it out in first Test ala Misbah 2016 it can rally the troops.

No, that would be rather stupid. I'd just say we're working hard, trying to get used to the conditions, etc etc.

Sorry didnt mean it in any negative way, what I mean is that a lot of times they say things in reply.

We will see how well they have adapted to the conditions when the first test starts next week.
