Chinese engineers and other staffers, engaged in the construction of M4 Motorway from Bahawalpur to Faisalabad, attacked policemen deployed for their security after the foreign workers were barred from leaving their camp's premises without a security squad, DawnNewsTV reported.

Several mobile phone clips doing rounds on social media show Chinese nationals approaching the police officials in a provocative manner and attacking them. A video showed a Chinese national standing on the bonnet of a police van, another video showed several Chinese nationals trashing policemen and some local people in plain clothes.

According to police officials, Chinese engineers and other officials wanted to leave their camp in Khanewal and visit a "redlight" area on Tuesday night. However, they resorted to agitation when denied permission to leave the camp without being accompanied by security officials.

Later, the Chinese engineers also cut power supply to the police camp established within the main construction camp, the officials added.

On Wednesday morning, the Chinese workers stopped work on the project and abandoned heavy machinery and vehicles on various roads in the area. They also resorted to violence and attacked police in their camp.

Subsequently, the protesting Chinese engineers wrote a letter to Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif, claiming that police officials refrained them from discharging their duties and attacked them.

They also accused the security in charge of attempting to hit Chinese workers with his vehicle. Police officials, however, rejected the accusations and termed them fictitious and fabricated.

Later in the day, Khaewal DPO Rizwan Omer Gondal held a meeting with the protesting Chinese workers following which they agreed to open the blocked roads.

Meanwhile, the police officials made it clear before the Chinese engineers that they will not be allowed to leave their camp without security arrangements.

It was not the first time when Chinese nationals in Pakistan attacked local police. In 2016, a clash occurred between the police and Chinese workers as the latter insisted on staying at a construction camp at night, but the former opposed the idea due to security reasons.

According to media reports, citing sources, some Chinese nationals associated with the Chinese army and trained in martial arts had attacked and injured police personnel deployed for their security.

However, the police had avoided taking any legal action against the Chinese to avert further conflict. In fact, the then CPO had suspended three SHOs and six other policemen for not restraining themselves from a clash.

So China is sending Bruce Lees' and Jet Lis to Pakistan. :murali

Pak Police need to show those Chinese thugs who the boss is of the land. You simply cannot attack anyone wearing uniform. They have to face the consequences.

Check the video ,they were pretty lethal.

My reservations of cpec coming true

I was worried about incidents and social issues like this and Chinese colonies springing up and china calling in its debts and taking over land and assets and clashes with locals .

Only a matter of time when U see Chinese version of Raymond Davis in Pakistan shooting dead some locals

Not sure if it's true but i heard from some one inside bureaucracy and someone related to CPEC that China sent 11k-12k prisoners to work on CPEC projects related constructions of roads.

Seems like Pakistan police are a soft touch both physically and in application of restrictions. A thrashing was probably needed to draw attention to their deficiencies. Seems they are only competent when pushing around old ladies and local shopkeepers.

So China basically sent good for nothing thugs who should have been in prison. Now those thugs are showing their thuggery on poor Pak police.

Pak should check the back ground of all the people before letting them in their country.

Love it how Indians are suddenly so sympathetic towards Pakistanis. Never seen more deceiving people tbh

No, they are demonstrating that Pak police aren't up to handling thugs. If the Punjab police are incapable of that, it shows they have either had poor training, or are getting paid to push around soft targets rather than hardened criminals. This is a good wake up call for Punjab authorities. I hope the Chinese gave them a good beating in all honesty, it will be good for them in the long run.

If you are talking about me coz am the only one defending police officers, then it's not about sympathy towards Pakistanis, want to see what's the point of view that made it justified for a Pakistani to be ok with this.

What kind of fight is that? This is more like how can she slap. They don’t even know how to throw hands.

You expect them to be as good as ex army men who know martial arts?

The police should know martial arts, at least to a basic level. If these Chinese are some sort of Bruce Lee standard operatives, then the Punjab authorities have severely underestimated the security requirements. Either way it is a complete fail on both fronts.

How many chinese are actually in Pakistan? And cant local Pakistanis do these jobs?

If I were to visit Pakistan or for the matter of fact any Islamic country based on their reputation I would be terrified :))

I mean these Chinese workers must be treated like royalty that they think they can get away bashing even a public/govt servant

Cpt rishwat

If you or me hit a police offficer in Pakistan I guarantee to you our feet would not touch the ground ,

Pakistan police thana brutality is on another level we would be tortured to death or end up in a vegative state ,

U don't mess with Pakistan police , naqeebullah is good example

This is actually worrying that Chinese think nothing off Pakistan police which terrifies majority of Pakistanis

I can't believe there are Pakistanis on this thread supporting the assault of their own police personnel by foreigners who wanted to go to "red light" areas.

Just wow.

If they were getting beaten up then they weren't doing their job.

They were beaten up for doing their job. If they continued to do their job at that point and acted against the Chinese, they would lose those jobs.

So what was the point of them being there? Either they should be given the authority to do their jobs, or might as well leave the Chinese to get on with whatever it is they are supposed to be doing, whether that's laying roads or prostitutes.

Pakistanis in gulf countries are some of the most reliable labourers builders for decades building some spectacular buildings infrastructure ,

So question is why do you need Chinese workers laying roads when we have 200 odd million of our own people and illegal Afghans who are more than capable of doing manual work and very skilled at it

It's really hard to make what's going on in the video tbh. Looks like just a bunch of Paindoos having a time of their life. Bet half of them were high on some local stuff or something.
That poor guy who got dragged though

wow!! One thing that interests me is the kind of people and the area they are leaving that is shown in the video. Most of the Chinese look like they are laborers working in a small town.. why are Chinese laborers in Pakistan? they seem to work on heavy machinery and stuff like that which is easily learned and can be done by a Pakistani..

The Punjab Police are as corrupt as they come but it seems that this time they were in the right. The Chinese wanted hookers but if something happened to them, its the Police that would have got the blame.

They have to be there. I work with the Chinese and we have Punjab Police SPU at our office doing nothing all day unless a Chinese has to leave the premises (even if it's to the corner shop) in which case they're bound to accompany them. They were doing their job when they stopped the Chinese from leaving but once the Chinese decided to beat them up, they had one of two choices: respond and be face serious consequences, or let it slide. Anyone in their position would do the latter. The Chinese here are not the model immigrants they are in the UK or US. They recently bought the place and they're not shy about letting it be known who owns it.

It all probably had to do with communication, rather, the lack of it.

Chinese labourers don't speak English or Urdu, and one can bet that not one in Pakistan's police can speak Mandarin or Cantonese. There probably was some misunderstanding because of this, resulting in the Chinese going ballistic.

Pakistanis should take the initiative to learn Chinese languages, if only to make communication easier.

The Chinese in Pakistan do speak English. Never met a single one who didn't across several organizations in various business sectors, including many blue collar workers - yes, they import those too.

The ones who trashed the police are labourers or as few posters suggest might be criminals doubt they speak English..

Embarrassing for Pakistan, but I guess they don’t have any choice.. They can’t act against China because let’s face it China are on control like America was once upon a time and they need China to invest.. It’s what happens when you don’t have a leg to stand on your own..

Well done Chinese workers.

Punjab police, especially Lahori, are the most pathetic. I can assure you that.

This is what Chinese meant by Belt on the Road Initiative?

It seems then that the responsibility has to rest with the govt. If they are assigning police to supervise the Chinese so closely, then they have to give the authority to the police to do their job. Otherwise what is the point in putting police there in the first place?

That's how third world countries operate. On top of being a third world country, we're also a client state of their's and almost entirely in their pocket so the government is even less likely to act than the government in another third world country like, say, Vietnam would.

Fair enough. As long as everyone's happy carry on as you were.

Kudos for acknowledging that Pak has become China's client state. Most keyboard warriors have difficulty seeing that. They'll tell you that whatever the Chinese are doing for Pak is out of kindness of their hearts.

Respect. [ I mean that. ]

It's shocking but (partially) understandable. They're caught between rock and the hard place. The corrupt police state treats the common citizen with utter disdain (quite common in some places in India too) and now Chinese are the new masters.

I read somewhere that the Chinese have shipped their convicts to Pak to work on these projects. This is like what the Brits did to Australia centuries ago. Good news is that the Australians went on to become a cricket powerhouse (a sports powerhouse in general in fact).

So Pak can look forward to dominating all sports in about 200 years! Who knows -- PSL might even overtake the IPL!

DW44 is also a diehard critic of Pakistan pre-China partnership/client status. Both culturally, religiously and I would imagine most other aspects of Pakistan the country, so becoming a client state of atheist China may well have some upsides from Pak home basedcritics POV. I can understand this thinking, when you are at the bottom, they say the only way is up.

Most of the Chinese in US or UK are well educated, at least the ones who immigrated in the last few decades.. The ones in Pak are laborers and obviously are not model citizens.. There were lots of reports and gossips about many of them being criminals who were doing hard labor in jails. So you cannot expect very good behavior.. The big question is why does a third world country like Pakistan with abundance of labor need to import these laborers. Can't it be done by localities? i can understand some very high skilled white collar jobs being taken up by Chinese.

Someone on Twitter is calling it "Belt and Rod Initiative." Quite apt.

very apt.. that is how Chinese have done in Sri Lanka, parts of Africa and central asia... they may find it difficult to do the same in Pak, especially if they try that in the Afghan border areas. The tribal belt there has centuries history of fighting against any such attempts

they can declare anyone as persona non grata.. deportation won't be easy until China co-operates. In this case since this has gone viral I expect China to quietly move them to a different camp. The only real action recommended there is against the poor police who not only got the beatings but are also being transferred and a case being filed against them..

So what could the reason Chinese workers don't want to adhere to their protection protocol? I hope someone speaking both urdu and Chinese get bottom of this. Because this looks bad for both parties.

Agree. Some Chinese intervention is required to expose flaws and systemic corruption in Pakistan. In a way its the Chinese man’s burden to bring about a change.

This is sad. Let's hope Chinese workers don't thrash Pakistani policemen again.

I’m sure the policemen have learnt the lesson. But if required the Chinese should thrash them again to make sure that the policemen are reminded of their duties, as perfectly highlighted by some Pakistani posters here.

Pakistani policemen should not let their waistlines fall by gorging on chai and biscuits all day. I hope more Chinese workers show these policemen their place.

Five Chinese engineers and staff workers who physically attacked a police squad deployed for their security in Khanewal have been sent packing from Pakistan, DawnNewsTV reported on Tuesday.

A letter, written by the Khanewal district administration to the Punjab government, had declared Xu Ling, the Country Project Manager; Tian Weijun, the Administration Officer; Liu Hui, the Material and Equipment Manager; Wang Yifan, officer for Financial Affairs; and Tan Yang, the Field Engineer, as the "persona non grata being the reason of this incident".

"They [Chinese workers] must have realised the sensitivity of their security and should not have taken the law in their hands," the letter reads.

The letter had recommended that the Chinese officials that had employed the workers "ensure SOPs (standard operating procedure) regarding security and provision of allied security arrangements as conveyed to them repeatedly"

Last week, Chinese engineers and staff workers, engaged in the construction of M4 Motorway from Bahawalpur to Faisalabad, had pounded security officials for trying to stop them from leaving their camp without a security squad.

Several mobile phone clips doing rounds on social media showed Chinese nationals approaching the police officials in a provocative manner and attacking them. Persona Non Grata? Are these guys on a diplomatic visa?

Very strange episode all round. You would imagine that Chinese workers would be used to authority and discipline, not the sort of behaviour you would expect from people from that nation. It makes you wonder whether it was the lack of structure and authority in Pakistan itself which led them to think they could behave like that. Punjab police do not appear at all impressive in those videos, it might have tempted normally docile Chinese to hand out a beating.

Punjab police deserves this phentee for their inept attitude. They are unhelpful and incredibly rude people. Lets not even mention how unfit most of them are. Having said it is a major concern if the Chinese are sending thugs to Pakistan.

This whole saga was a very weird one. China sending Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan clones into Pakistan:ishant

Punjab govt should have hired them to train combat skills to their police instead of sending them home. Or done a swap deal where we can give the police uniforms to the Chinese guys and send the Punjab police over to China.
