This is from December before the second Test in Karachi against Sri Lanka. Play the video above at the exact point to hear those inaccurate, misguided and factually wrong remarks that I’ll be analysing below.

Misbah says teams who play less Tests are at a disadvantage. Says teams who play more games at home are at an advantage in response to ARY’s Shahid Hashmi asking a question about India and Australia racing ahead on the table and how he views the concept of the league. He says it is very difficult for teams who play less Test Cricket.

He couldn’t be further from the truth.

Everybody will contest the same number of points of 720.
Everybody will play the same number of series of 6.
Everybody will play the same number of home and away series of 3 each.
Each series is worth 120 points irrespective of the series length.
Each country will have two teams they won’t play against.
No team plays the same team twice.
It is fair for one and all.
They were lame excuses from the Pakistan Head Coach.

A Test win in a:
2 match series = 60 points.
3 match series = 40 points.
4 match series = 30 points.
5 match series = 24 points.
Each team plays the same number of series of 6 with 3 at home and 3 away. 120 points is the maximum you can gain in the series.

No team will play more series than the other. And playing less Tests and shorter series are an advantage. There are more points available for Test victories in shorter series.

It is the complete opposite of what he said if anything when it comes to playing less Tests being a disadvantage.

Additionally, you can be ahead on the table by winning less Tests assuming the Tests you play are part of shorter series and therefore carry more points. Pakistan have 60 points available for a Test win for 10 of their 13 Tests in the World Test Championship as five of their six series are two Tests long. The only series which is 3 Tests long is the tour of England this summer where 40 points are available for a Test victory. Pakistan are not like other teams who will be playing a four or five match series and therefore will only have 30 or 24 points to gain from a Test win in those longer series that the likes of India, England, Australia and South Africa are involved in during the course of the league.

It is designed in such a way to make it easier for teams like Pakistan, New Zealand, West Indies, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh to compete and do well in it too. They have thoughtfully designed it in a way not to disadvantage teams who play less Test Cricket.

And yet the Pakistan Coach was complaining and coming up with vague excuses about why India and Australia are leading the pack.

An articulate, educated man and a coach on a big salary should know basics such as this. It is what you are ultimately playing for in Test Cricket. It is what you should be trying to plot for in looking to get to the inaugural World Test Championship final in June 2021. It is like a student not knowing how his exams are marked and assessed. It is disappointing to see the Pakistan Coach respond so cluelessly to the question on this subject. It displays a lack of knowledge, research and homework that his position of authority as the national head coach requires. You wouldn’t have seen Mickey Arthur make such a comment.

Did he really think the ICC could be that silly that they will design a Test league where whoever plays most Tests and most Tests at home will win?

One would have expected Pakistan’s winningest Test Captain and the man that led them to the top of the Test rankings to have a keen understanding on the newly introduced ICC World Test Championship and how it functions, particularly as he is still involved in the game as now a Coach.

You don't think playing more Tests outside the WTC helps in the Test Matches that are in the WTC?

Unbelievable.

I am gobsmacked.

Talk about failing to do your basic homework. This is staggering.

This is pretty embarrasing. NZ for example are pretty strong contenders for the finals

No.... He means that pakistan need a lot of practice in tests and would like Pakistan to play more tests to develop test quality players and build the right team. Having fewer tests far apart makes it hard for pakistan to build a good test team. That's what he means.

Lol. How are the die hard supporters going to support this? If it was some other Pakistani player you could blame the lack of education but this guy had an MBA. Major fail

The question was specifically about the World Test Championship points system.

NZ with 3 wins are ahead in the table compared to England with 5 wins. If you watch the video carefully you will realise he has no idea how it works at the time of answering the question. He also goes on to say teams who play more games at home are at an advantage. Each series is capped at 120 points and no team plays more home series than the other. He hasn't done his homework on this. He was just thinking it is just like ICC Test rankings during his playing days that they've given a more fancy name to. This is completely different. It is a premiership starting from scratch with a new points system, culminating in a final between the top two at the end of the cycle. And clearly he hasn't got his head around how it works.

But he has an MBA and never spoke up to anyone of authority.

Shameless muppet.

Actually, you have not stated the full question... he is asked if he is satisfied with the points system AND how is Pakistan going to catch up with the table toppers. His answer is fine. He was saying it is difficult to build a good test team when you are playing fewer matches than other teams as HappyWarsFan explained.

The only slip up was saying that teams playing at home have a greater advantage, but it is just a garbled way of saying that India, Aus have played a lot of home games so far in WTC, I think..

And before all these ppl start accusing me of being a Misbah fan, I actually don’t like him as a coach at all.. just calling it as it is.
