In another crown for Pakistan’s fighting game community, Atif Butt emerged as the new “King of the Iron Fist” on Sunday after winning the Tekken World Tour 2022 videogame tournament in Amsterdam, Netherlands.

The Tekken World Tour (TWT) series from videogame producer Bandai Namco Entertainment Inc put together an international offline tournament series where the “best compete to be crowned The King of the Iron Fist”.

The King of the Iron Fist tournament is the central focus of the massively popular and successful fighting video game franchise Tekken.

The TWT 2022 series kicked off on June 24 with regional tournaments in 16 regions, including Pakistan as its own region for the first time, to culminate in the final tournament — an invitational event for the 24 players who qualified from the regional finals, regional placements or a last chance qualifier.

The TWT 2022 Global Finals tournament was played at the Theatre Amsterdam on Saturday and Sunday.

Bandai Namco Esports’ Twitter account shared the winning moments of Butt’s final match against South Korea’s Sang-hyun “Jeondding” Jeon, which secured first place for the former and prize money of $50,000.

Meanwhile, Tekken’s official Twitter account said: “It’s official — the new King of the Iron Fist is Atif Butt.”

Expressing his jubilation, Gujranwala-based Butt said he was “out of words” and that it was a surreal moment for him.

“Humbled and overwhelmed by all the messages and wishes coming my way! You’re all too kind! Thank you so much!!

“All of this feels so very unreal, thank you all for everything, upwards and onwards! This is just the beginning!” he tweeted.

The two finalists posed together in a display of sportsmanship and Jeondding congratulated his opponent for his win. “I really wanted to win, but I was sad that I couldn’t. Thank you to everyone who supported me,” he said.

Pakistan FGC trailblazer Arslan “Ash” Siddique also shared a picture with the winner.

Ash himself finished 13th in the final. “I need to improve a lot. God willing, next year,” he said reviewing his own performance.

However, he added that “at least I was able to do what I had been preparing for.”

Ash is the founder of Ashes Gaming which describes itself as a “dedicated eSports team geared towards promoting and unearthing new talents In Pakistan”. Butt himself is a member of the team.

That fact was not lost on the general manager of the annual fighting video game event Evo Championship Series, who observed: “Atif Butt making it to TWT2022 Grand Finals while representing the esports team founded by Arslan Ash feels like a giving back to your scene story closing in on its final chapter.”

Ash had bagged the top spot in Evo 2019 and third place in Evo 2022.

Tekken 8 looks awesome, on Unreal Engine 5 I think?

Have you seen the Nina Williams Tekken 8 trailer? OMG!

Oh man been following atif forward while..unreal akuma..I've been playing tekken since tekken 2 but missed out on some of the middle ones..played 5 missed 6 then finally got 7 on my pc a couple of years ago..I realise my reflexes are not what they once were ..so I play Josie as she is a bit easy for me to handle..

If anyone plays on pc would be fun to have a pakpassion tourney lol..

Awesome idea, PP Tekken Tournament, but I dont think Tekken 7 allows cross play.

What this country's left to celebrate

Video game champions. The joke writes itself

Some of the best coders are gamers..it’s a future in a way, failed game development lead to formation of Discord a revolutionary app imo.

Unreal Engine 5 will also change the way tech overall works as now they are stepping into IT.. if any of these ,Pakistani awam gets into and works on they will do well for themselves.

Personally I try not to game because I have an addictive personality, but not in far future gamers might make more on average than sports(Fortnight winners probably already do lol).

Yes I meant it in a way of commenting on the situation right now. The nation sits on its worst ecnomical disaster, on the verge of bankruptcy, behind in every metric from health to education to crime. Nations are going to Mars and space.

We are busy celebrating video game winners

I find e-sports a bit weird too but its a big thing in the younger generation plus its not really these kids fault that the country is on its last legs.

Ah that is unfortunately true, I remember in 1990s when Sachin was the only thing that made us happy and proud, only from 1998 did our fortunes change(foundation laid in 1991).

So everyone should stop doing their thing (I’m sure you imply cricket as well) because the economy’s bad ?

Even though I myself stopped playing games ages ago (last Tekken was the 3rd), Esports have a lot of potential and offer economic opportunities to the youth nowadays.

Such victories are important because they’ll attract the sponsors and thus make many financially secure.

did someone say pakpassion tourney? count me in haha

Ive had my fair share of struggles against Kazuya mains hahah, they just punish hard on mistakes and greediness

Side step to avoid his annoying hell sweep..Once you block that he can be dealt with..they all have the same moves...the really good players kill you with their defence and parries.

Kazuya has some killer moves but these take time to master and as such the character is not great for button mashing and is slower compared to other players! Mastering the 5 & 10 move combos and the timing to pull it off is obviously key but this gives ample opportunity for the opponent to counter move. His side step and counter moves are awesome too.

Though my second character has to be Law for the sheer fact he is useful in button mashing scenarios and he is fast, which helps when I am not taking the battles seriously and playing with the fam!

In my experience the toughest to master is Yoshimitsu. I think he is the only character to have a one move kill. Suicide Sword move I think its called.

I tried to master him but game up after Tekken 3.

I wouldn't pay attention to the pessimists.

Video games is the largest entertainment industry in the world, it is bigger than the movie and music industry combined.

It's great to see players from Pakistan winning such tournaments and making a name for themselves, as it can also unleash untapped potential both in development and skill. E-Sports is also getting bigger by the day.

Twitch makes millions a day just from gamers streaming! Some of the teenagers are the richest and influencial among their age group around the world.

Pakistan and its affiliation with computers goes a long way back, in fact the first ever computer virus was by a Pakistani. So the talent is there, just got to tap it in the right way.

Exactly. The baba jee mentality never leaves us. I sometimes feel some people in Pakistan want to back to the time where there were tangay and horses on the roads.

Esports is massive. Instead of pulling our noses up we should be supporting people like arsalan ..why cant we create a purposebuilt esports arena in Islamabad? Hell we are wasting the sports complex where jinnah stadium is...we have a perfect site for Multi discipline sport and esports...convert the stadium to a multiuse stadium for cricket and athletics...build a nice hotel up there with a number of helipads. We could also use the conference centre in islu too...but alas our babay think a computer is a commodore 64 or atari...

Think better to focus on how not to become a defaulting state. Pakistan cannot afford distractions otherwise we will be the new Syria.

law has always been one of my favorites as well just because of the mashability (also my gateway character when playing cousins)

true about kazuya he has high execution and also his 50/50 is one of the best in the game i think

ahhhhhh the kazuyas that know how to pick their fights are really good, just striking when the time is right it becomes a chess match

Pakistani gamer Arslan Ash wins another EVO Japan

KARACHI: Pakistani gamer Arslan “Ash” Siddique won the Tekken 7 competition at EVO Japan 2023 on Sunday after beating South Korea’s Meo-Il, Dawn.com reported.

The Lahore-based player has now won three EVO titles. In 2019, he won the Tekken 7 tournament in Japan as well as the Evolution Championship Series in the United States.

In August last year, he finished third in the EVO 2022 Tekken 7 competition, according to Dawn.com

On Sunday, Mr Siddique played as Zafina to dominate Meo-Il, who was using Geese Howard, 3-0 in the tournament’s final leg.

The top three winners, including third-placed Rangchu from South Korea, were later awarded cash and additional prizes by Tekken series game director and chief producer Katsuhiro Harada.

The gamer wins the competition at EVO Japan 2023

According to the tournament’s website, EVO is the world’s biggest fighting game tournament with a long history where fighting game players from around the world gather in Las Vegas to compete against each other.

It added that EVO Japan is another world championship in the same spirit as the main EVO tournament.

In 2019, Ash was named the ESPN Esports Best Player of the year after he became the first-ever unified EVO champion, winning both EVO and EVO Japan in the same year.

In February, another Pakistani, Atif Butt, emerged as the new “King of the Iron Fist” after winning the Tekken World Tour 2022 video game tournament in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Mr Butt was a member of the team ‘Ashes Gaming’ founded by Ash. The team describes itself as a “dedicated eSports team geared towards promoting and unearthing new talents In Pakistan”.
