Just watch from 8:00-8:35. Aamir Sohail mentioned this exact shot in an interview recently when he was giving tribute to Miandad on his birthday and mentioned that Miandad had told him before hand that he was going to play this exact shot in the exact manner. Miandad even quickly glanced at the gap before playing that shot.

I am in complete awe. This is a 36 year old Miandad who is past his prime and he played this shot to a Donald in his absolute prime and at his quickest. This shot was pure artistry. Without a doubt the best batsman to have ever played for Pakistan.

I remember watching that shot live and I could not believe how he picked his gap, moved away and played what was an attempted Yorker for a square drive. It makes sheer genius

Umar Akmal plays it well

One particular instance I can recall is when he was on 83 against Sri Lanka with Dilhara Fernando bowling; but there are some other times that he has done it.

I was thinking the same

Also Babar plays it well too and sometimes Sarfraz

Tremendous shot considering Miandad picked it off his stumps.

Reminds me of Akmal's classic drive.

He played a lot of unorthodox shots that very few batsmen dared to play back in the 80s and 90s, shots that have now become mainstream because of T20. With his penchant for improvisation, amazing strike rotation and running skills and his ability to finish games he would've been a gun T20 player.

Also this video bought back fond memories of one of my favorite ODI series involving Pakistan. Wasim and Waqar's bowling in this series was out of this world, one of my top memories of the game.

You guys are missing the point, miandad was all about control. Umar akmal and babar may be able to play these shots but the way miandad controlled the innings was next level. These guys do not come close. Not only that, miandad made the other bastman play and build. This innings was his last 100 and he scored another fifty against the WI in the next match. This was the time when starting from the australian tour, pakistan was getting rolled over by the windies very very easily. He was a giant among boys. Younis khan is the greatest pakistani test bastman, but Miandad remains the greatest pakstani bastmen in all formats. Just look at this short, donald was the fastest bowler at that time, along side bishop and waqar. The way miandad squeezed it in insane. He was perhaps the only player playing reverse sweep regularly, gatting was doing it do but not as frequently and certainly not as effectively.

Dont forget, he was playing attacking shots to Donald who was in his prime while Miandad was far past it at this stage.

I remember watching him in 1996, was a shadow of a batsman. Should not have played in the world cup

He had actually been out with a knee injury for an entire year, he did not have any match practice prior to that world cup. Have no idea which selectors picked him and on what basis.

The decision to select him was based more on public sentiment and experience than form and ability. Also he was dropped down to 6 in the order when he was already struggling to find form. Yet, he tried his best before running out of partners.

I've seen Kohli play that shot in the 2016 T20 WC against Australia. Don't slaughter me for this but I think Kohli looked better when doing it, he didn't fall over to the leg-side like Maindad did.

I ripped, PP logo'd and uploaded this very clip in the OP many many years ago from a bunch of VCD's i bought in Karachi, good to see it's still in circulation all these years later. :inti

all else aside, how did he tell amir before playing this shot?

was amir the one who brought drinks at the dismissal of mujtaba?

the shot is way ahead of its time and with the amount of head gear that miandad is wearing, brave as well. the six to fannie also shows how powerful he was even at the fag end of his career.

miandad has to be the best street fighting cricketer in the history of all street fighting cricketers. best. bar none.

I think amir sohail was the runner

Miandad rarely, if ever, looked good playing any shot haha. His game wasn't about technical correctness or elegance, it was all about efficiency and producing results.

The ball to kohli was in the blockhole and harder to put away however that ball wasn't aimed at the stumps unlike Miandad's

This shot was also mentioned by waseem akram last year on game on hai. It was a brilliant shot (sort of t20 shot).

Miandad was famous for such improvisation. He was fierce cutter. I don't think anybody from pak has as an effective cut as he did. I watched his 260 and 271 on youtube, they were full of square drives and square cuts. He would cut bowlers all day with great accuracy

Miandad was way ahead of his time. Cricket Australia did a video on Youtube called Javed's mix tape. Watch it to see how good this guy was. Pakistan's greatest batsman so far.

Kohli is a hard working perfectionist, he must have practiced so many drills to perfect that shot. Miandad in comparison played that shot with pure natural talent more than anything.

^^^Good video but only limited to 1-2 innings, some great shots though!

What the younger generation doesn't realise how a 'GOAT' of a player he was in ODI's (besides being one in Tests as well)...in 87 at one point he hit successive 50 plus scores in 9 matches, imagine that; he was so far ahead that next best is a few at 6 successive 50's.

If T20 was being played, I have no hesitation in saying that he would be having the highest T20 average next to maybe Viv, such was his willingness and ability to play shots against the run of play just to score as well as befuddle, humiliate, and shock the oppsoition in to a complete freeze!
