Tim Southee could have easily hurt the batsman - Does the ICC need to put a stop to this practice?

He went overboard but this is fine as long as it does not hurt the batsmen. Fear makes you play silly shots. Its a good way to make the player wary of the bowler.

He's done this a few times, hasn't he? Seems like a grumpy Jimmy Anderson sort of character. Unnecessary aggro tbh.

The PCB did nothing against Stuart Broad who blatantly broke Zulqarnain's finger in 2010. It shows the pussycats we have become internationally

Clearly it was done as a way of intimidating the batsman and could have hurt Burns.

No he threw it at the stumps to keep the batsman back in his crease. Hes wearing pads its not going to hurt him in the slightest.

No issues with the aggression but it is a problem if it gets physical. Didn't look like Southee wanted to hit the batsman but an apology would have buried the issue.

Surprised Warner didn't flare up.

If it was pre-ban, he definitely would have.

This is not acceptable, icc needs to act soon, law should be introduced otherwise there will be lot of fights brawls in club level cricket. He nearly hurt him, in club cricket batsman will throw a bat in reply. Plz introduce some kind of law #ICC #Timsouthee

Not cool.

Or, he should've followed up with an apology.

You can target the stumps if someone is well outside their crease.

David Warner claps back at Tim Southee after throw hits Joe Burns

David Warner has clapped back at Tim Southee after the New Zealand bowler struck Australian opener Joe Burns with a throw at the stumps.

Bowling his third over on day one at Perth Stadium, Southee fielded a block from Burns and immediately threw the ball back at the batsman.

After what former Australian captain Ricky Ponting described as "a little rush of blood", Southee's actions were admonished by Warner.

The Kiwi told his rival that Burns was "in front of the wicket", suggesting it was Burns's fault for getting in the way of the attempted run out, but Warner disagreed.

"Hey, come on," he said.

"You're supposed to be Mr Nice Guys."

New Zealand great Brendon McCullum jokingly assessed that Southee "got that one horribly wrong" after the ball stuck in his hands.

Ponting described the clash as what's expected out of a Test match between the two nations.

But the Channel 7 commentator hinted Southee could get as much as he gives later.

"I tell you what the Aussies will notice there though," Ponting said.

"There was no apology there. He didn't say sorry at all."

Burns later fell for nine runs when he was trapped lbw by Colin de Grandhomme in a successful bowling change by New Zealand captain Kane Williamson.

The Australian opener opted against a review but replays showed the ball was missing the stumps.

I like this kind of aggression, as long as its between two matching teams, makes test match a bit spicy. Its ridiculous when a 120km/h "fast" bowler ( Abbass ) staring at Warner who was playing at 200 plus.

I think under current ICC regulations that is worth a demerit is it not?

Southee clearly tried to make a point - not long before someone gets seriously hurt by this type of behaviour.

Hit him on his wrist, ribs, heart area etc.

May not be life-threatening but could be career threatening.

Well if the bowler is throwing it at the batsmans upper body they are crossing the line clearly. Southee threw it at the stumps and hit his pads.

He did not aim - he threw and its lucky that he did not hurt the batsman.

Tbh it's not often I agree with MenInG but for once, to an extent, I agree with him. Southee shouldn't have done it. Even if it just hit his thumb in a bad position it could have injured him. Southee didn't even apologise.

I totally agree , this was unnecessary. It would have been a different story if Burns was going for a run or advancing to do so. An apology was definitely needed for this

It was unnecessary but Burns was outside of his crease.

Seems like a throw gone really wrong.
