Bhopal: A murder case has been registered in Madhya Pradesh after a missing 65-year-old with mental illness was found dead and a video showed a man asking him if his "name is Mohammed" and repeatedly assaulting him as he struggled to answer.

The case has been registered in Neemuch district. The attacker in the video has been identified as Dinesh Kushwaha and named the main accused. Kushwaha is the husband of a former BJP corporator.

Police said that the elderly man, Bhanwarlal Jain, was from Sarsi in Ratlam district and went missing on May 15 after a visit to a religious event in Rajasthan. Following a missing complaint, police put out an alert with his photographs. His body was found on a roadside in Neemuch district yesterday. It was handed over to his family and they performed last rites.

The family then came to know of the video. The video shows Mr Jain sitting on a bench as Kushwaha towers over him. "What's your name? Mohammed?" he asks the elderly man and slaps him across the face. "Tell your name properly, show your Aadhaar card," he adds.

The elderly man, visibly petrified, offers money. This infuriates the attacker and he slaps the senior citizen non-stop on his head and ears. The 65-year-old appears to be struggling to understand the situation he is in. He lifts his shirt and a hidden pocket can be seen. He again tries to offer the attacker money as the latter keeps slapping him hard.

After the horrifying video emerged, family members of Jain reached the police station and demanded Kushwaha's immediate arrest.

KL Dangi, in-charge of the police station where the FIR was filed, said the video was probably shot on Thursday.

State Home Minister Narottam Mishra said a case has been registered under sections of murder and death by negligence.

The Opposition has slammed the ruling BJP after the video surfaced. Congress MLA Jitu Patwari accused the BJP of "lighting a furnace of hate".

Senior party leader Digvijaya Singh said a case has been filed but it remains to be seen if action will follow.

State BJP secretary Rajneesh Agrawal said, "The incident is unfortunate. An accused is an accused and it has nothing to do with party politics. None of the people involved in such an act will be spared by the state government."

I cannot believe what humans can do to each other in the name of some false sense of superiority

Have no words!

Just want to say to sanghi sympathizers and stooges, mend your ways before its too late, don't prop this fascist ideology. Hate doesn't differentiate between religions and anyone of us could be at the receiving end of it even if we are Hindus.

BIMARU gonna BIMARU.

All of India's ethnicities are Indians at the end of the day. Them being Bimaru has nothing to do with it, there are systematic issues that lead to incidents like these.

This.

This incident could have happened anywhere in India, such hate filled atmosphere we are living in.

Why target a meek 65yo man?? Whats the bravado in beating the weak and old, one suffering from mental disorder. Ridiculous actions

This man might get justice because he was actually Hindu . Don't think there would be so much anger if he actually turned out to be a muslim . They actually hurt the "wrong" people this time .

This is daily norm. There are anti Hindutva groups online which post videos like this everyday.

Diplomatic answer.

The truthful answer is Modi has legitimised religious persecution under the guise of Hindutva.

That's why he is darling of his followers as he has proved to be a total disaster on all other governance parameters.

Rahul Gandhi, the leader of India's main opposition party, on Saturday took Modi government to task for its consistent approach of spreading hate in the country, and said "India is not in a good place."

"India is not in a good place," Rahul, Prime Minister Narendra Modi's arch-rival," said while at the 'Ideas for India' conclave in London on Friday.

The congressman further observed that the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had spread kerosene all over the country. "You need one spark and we'll be in big trouble," Rahul said and termed it a responsibility of the opposition, the Congress to bring people, communities, states and religions together.

The statement invited stern backlash from the ruling party spokesperson, Gaurav Bhatia who accused the Congress leader of "hurting India" with his anti-Modi stance.

According to Times of India, Bhatia went on to accuse the opposition leader of "betraying" the country with his remarks made on a foreign land.

The spokesperson advised Rahul to be "cautious" when 'speaking ill' about India when sitting in a foreign land.

Late last month, the US Commission on International Religious Freedom once again said that religious freedom had deteriorated "significantly" in India under the Hindu nationalist regime, and recommended targeted sanctions over abuses.

It was the third consecutive year that the commission asked that India be placed on a list of "countries of particular concern" – a recommendation that angered New Delhi.

The commission had pointed to a "culture of impunity for nationwide campaigns of threats and violence by mobs and vigilante groups" and arrests of journalists and human rights advocates.

Interesting to note how the BJP crowd will have nothing to say about such atrocities in their country?

My cousin in the UK once told me that Rahul Gandhi's situation is similar to Jeremy Corbyn. His view was that the two politicians were among few who regularly raised valid points but were also constantly mocked over their views by a concerted bought-media campaign. Don't know much about this Corbyn guy, but he's in the news here for ironically, a meeting with Rahul Gandhi. Apparently Corbyn is anti-India or something which reiterates Rahulg's anti-Indianness :warner

Typical BIMARU excuse from some posters as if rest of India is unaffected from this Sanghi mentality. I see hatred for Muslims everywhere.

India is gonna remain India
They hate every muslim with passion.
More than 90 percent of Hindus hate muslims.
Allah will ask them on judgement day and they will rot in hell for eternity.
Muslims hater posters are nowhere to be seen on this thread.
