14th August 1947 was the day when we celebrated our 1st Independence day. It has been 70 years since we won our freedom but this is our 71st Independence Day!

You are equating independence with birthday.
You celebrate the day you get Independence and that is your very first independence day.

Technically there was only one Independence Day, the one in 1947. Since then, we've had anniversaries of the Independence Day, and this year's was the 70th of those. After all, independence doesn't take place again and again every year, its just the anniversary of the first one that is observed.
Birthdays too were once called Birth Day Anniversaries, just like Wedding Anniversaries are still called so.
