Michael Vaughan has compared him to KP and today he played Another excellent innings and looks destined to go all the way. I know Tom quite well, he went to Bromsgrove Private School and I found him very arrogant and Self centered, so his shots are not the only things he has in common with KP.

He looked very good but was massively helped by Edwards leg side half volleys.

Not sure about comparison to KP though.

Super hundred yesterday, and incredible batting in the T20 Blast in general.

Saw some of this innings. He looks very good. Will probably get some game time for England soon.

Pretty dynamic keeper batsman who in future can be good enough to play just as a batsman for Eng. Rubbing shoulders with Babar must also have helped his overall confidence at crease.

England has got decent number of dynamic keeper batsmen coming through in him, Phil Salt while Billings, Duckett are already under radar and Buttler and Bairstow being regulars.

I desperately want him to see in this years psl.Realistically he will be available throughout the tournament because he is not a regular member of the english team plus England has alot of wicket keepers in their current squad so it will be difficult for him to get selected initially. On the top of that I think babar azam can convince him to fully play all the matches in Pakistan. He is definitely a must have in this years psl and he will add value to that team because the pitches in Pakistan are batting friendly and not slow and dead like the UAE.He can be a similar breakout star like jofra archer who got recognization because of playing T20 leagues.

top talent, early days tho, usually second seasons are a bit tougher once teams have had a good look at you.

what stands out tho is his mastery over reverse hits and the bat speed through the ball. proper t20 hitter this kid.

How do England keep producing these supremely talented hitters. This guy looks like another one of those destructive strikers.

Him and Babar are making a deadly combination.

Atleast one of them gets a score each game.

Have you seen eddie byrom? ,he is as talented as tom banton and both play for Somerset.I am actually jealous of the talent that England possess at the moment.

He's very good, but what I have seen of him is that he doesn't have much offside play.

Nah I haven't seen him but I get what you're saying. Not only do they have the most explosive batting line up in the world, they also have the strongest bench.

First time I saw him I also thought about KP. But whether he can become an as good player as him is another story.

Way better than kp this guy can paddle sweep 150 kph bowling for fun his arc and long reach is something else excited to see him against newzeland

Tom Banton launches five consecutive sixes in BBL09!

Should be a star at the PSL.

A great signing by Zalmi.

I really tought Karachi were going to reunite Babar and him.

It's going to be a great test for Banton to play or slower pitches.

KP is still KP. great test player.

Tom banton would be lucky to be half the player KP is in test cricket.

This is new age cricket different players for different formats. Example Jason Roy isn’t cut out for test cricket but he’s a beast opener in Odis. Test cricket isn’t going to decide how good openers should be honestly it’s 2020 now and it’s about t20 cricket etc players like Banton are an excitement machine. If my opener gets a 50 off of 20 balls every game and gets out even that is enough for me that’s what a openers job should really be to get your team off to a flying start especially if you have a team power packed like India Australia England that’s all you need from your opener. But if it’s a mediocre team like Pakistan with a terrible middle order than you need openers like imam to play test cricket and make sure to hold one end secure to save us from collapses.

Got picked up by KKR for $145k. If he shows this form, it will be a bargain buy.

yes for trash players or mediocre ones t20 is the way to go.

only the best of the best can play test. That's why it should be an exclusive sport.

either be good in all formats to become a legend or play well in test cricket to become a legend. That will never change.

Jason roy can win 10 world cups and still woudlnt mean much because he never was a good test player. Atleast dhoni was ok in test cricket.

He has talent!
Now we will see if he is another KP or just a LOI player like Buttler, Roy. It's not easy to become KP.

In T20 cricket he may be the next KP, but don't see him setting the world on fire in the 5 day format. He is no way near KP.

Zalmi picked him before KK had a chance. Babar and Banton would have been a great pair.
Even Multan Sultans wanted him looking at Ali Tareen's tweet after he was picked by Zalmi.

No doubt he is a dangerous opener but i am looking forward for him in PSL, here the bowling standard will test his skills :riaz

Bowling standard of PSL is not good enough either.

Asif Ali looked like Jos Buttler in PSL but he is actually inferior version of Anwar Ali the hitter.

Kamran Akmal is King Kohli of PSL and everyone knows about him in International cricket.

Michael Vaughan suggested that Banton should skip IPL and concentrate on the number 6 slot in the Test side by playing first few weeks of the county championship instead of IPL

Harry Gurney's reply

It will be interesting to see if Banton is another Roy in the year arena or is another Pietersen. He will get his chance sooner rather than later, let's see if he has the technique and temperment to succeed. I wouldnt be surprised if he does.

dont see a spot for tom banton in the near future, he has a long way to go before a test debut.

agree with harry gurney, he should have some fun in the ipl and look forward to the limited overs squad, he can play country whenever he wants but not let the opportunity to pass now.

still needs to improve on alot of aspects for the longer version,

Tom Banton insists he will not withdraw from the Indian Premier League after Michael Vaughan urged the England batsman to prioritise first-class cricket over the Twenty20 format.

Banton, 21, signed a £108,000 deal with Kolkata Knight Riders for the 2020 IPL but Vaughan suggested he would instead be better served playing for Somerset in the County Championship.

‘I have seen enough of Banton to know he is a superstar in the making,’ former England captain Vaughan wrote in a column for Telegraph Sport. ‘I’m not sure a stint in the IPL right now, when he might not get a lot of game time, is what he needs at this stage of his career.

‘The IPL can wait. He has plenty of time to go to India. He needs to play four-day cricket and score some early hundreds.’ But Banton, who made his international debut in November, says he will be fulfilling a childhood dream when he plays in the Indian Premier League. Asked if he still intended to play in the IPL, which starts on March 29,

Banton said: ‘Yes, 100 per cent.

‘When I was growing up, the IPL was definitely something I thought I’d love to do and play for England in Test cricket as well.’ Banton is regarded as the most exciting English white-ball batsman of his generation and scored 549 runs at a strike rate of over 160 in last summer’s T20 Blast.

The Somerset star also impressed during his recent stint at Australian Big Bash side Brisbane Heat, scoring the second-fastest half-century in the history of the tournament.

Banton is expected to be part of England’s squad for the T20 World Cup at the end of the year and hopes a productive run at the IPL boosts his international prospects. ‘Definitely, I’d love to be part of the World Cup,’ Banton added. ‘The white-ball team seems so strong at the moment but I’d love to go. We’ve got the IPL coming up so some strong performances there are going to help.’

Averages 27 in FC cricket, if he wants to play test cricket he will need to work on that. He is still young and could have preferred FC cricket at this stage if his career and once he would have been established he could have earned more even in leagues.

It would be a shame if he doesn’t develop into a test player due to priority management.

Considering the IPL and county cricket clash and its not likely going to change in near future so ECB needs to establish certain rules for their young talents which are good enough to play all 3 formats.

I think his short term goal is to play for England in the world cup this year which I can see him doing. If not this year then definitely next year in India 2021. For his career it would be faster to break into the T20 team and work his way up from there, as opposed to putting in the long runs on the domestic circuit and waiting for a call up. The way he’s performing in limited overs, is his best way of getting his debut because the talent is there, he just needs the right opportunities. He’s not going to set the county circuit on fire with daddy hundreds this soon, and so wouldn’t get a call up this way

Mind you, I don’t think it’s the best long term decision. It might meddle with his development and temperament—he’s still young and now is the time to develop his test skills. I’m just explaining his probable rationale

5 consecutive sixes is a pretty cool thing but man the bowling was awful. Who is this Nair guy.
Romali_rotti is that you?
:cobra

Didn't look at ease batting at 6. He has to be patient to get his chance at the top. It was interesting that he was actually qualified to play for SA, but when was the last time an English born player went to play for SA?

He played last U19 WC and he is ready for England. Batsman development is one of the most difficult process, and you need a quality system to process. England are second after India in term producing best batting talent

Ollie Pope and him are the future of England

He'd have to live in South Africa for 3 years to qualify to play for them.

His dad is a Saffer, he can get citizenship straight away. Surely he didn't need to live there for 3 years in those circumstances.

You still need to complete a residency period to be able to play hence why Archer wasn't instantly available for England.

Back in the squad for the game vs Islamabad United.

5 years later he's gone from being the next KP to just a Sam Billings backup. He has failed in Asian conditions in IPL, PSL and LPL.

To be even a T20 great, batters have to be able to turn on heat across conditions. Likes of Finn Allen, JFM, Banton should develop their one track games for more flexibility across conditions.

The benchmark for their generation is being set by cross format talents like Brook and Jaiswal and these guys are well short.

Tom Banton is enjoying a standout season in the ILT20 2025, with an impressive batting average of 58.

Did you teach at Bromsgrove? I have a few friends that studied there and they are the most pretentious people I have met in my life.

Six years on and the next KP is only bashing it in ILT20?

Exactly. And the previous guy compared to KP was Liam Livingstone who is suffering a similar T20 league fate.

KP played 100+ tests unlike these prima donnas.

The genius of KP will be hidden for those who never watched him play. Stats don't tell you how he would awaken and butcher the best oppositions and how he saved his best for occasions when everyone was against him (even his own team mates)

Yep, his elite mentality made him very un-English in many ways.

Because he was brought up in SA. But he was also very non-protean in terms of mental strength, handling pressure and relishing the occasion.

Sunil Gavaskar comes down hard on Tom Banton over unnecessary DRS call:

“Are you serious? Taking a review when you nick the ball, I mean, how can a batter not know that he has nicked the ball and particularly the batter not hit the bat or the ground? This is international cricket. This is not school cricket. You might sometimes not know, but this is international cricket. It makes less sense because he went over to the non-striker to consult,”

Gavaskar's old age is getting to him. He is beginning to sound like the angry old man who doesn't give you your ball when it goes into his house. Needs to be phased out of commentary.

Tom Banton determined to grasp opportunity after late Champions Trophy call-up

Tom Banton’s route back into an England shirt has not been without its challenges but the batter is eager to make up for lost time – starting at the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy.

The 26-year-old made his international debut six days short of his 20th birthday back in 2019 following a breakthrough summer which also led to Big Bash and IPL deals as well as comparisons with the likes of Kevin Pietersen.

He endured a lean spell thereafter but has worked his way back to the top level, an ascent he attributes to ‘keeping his head down’, and arrives in Pakistan in flying form.

The 26-year-old clubbed 493 runs at an average of 54.77 during the recent ILT20 in the UAE, with two centuries and three fifties, to build on his excellent form throughout 2024 in various short-form tournaments.

Those numbers propelled Banton back into the thoughts of new England white-ball coach Brendon McCullum, who coached Banton while leading Kolkata Knight Riders in 2020.

And when Jacob Bethell’s hamstring injury ruled him out of the forthcoming Champions Trophy, Banton was the obvious candidate to slot into England’s 15-man squad.

“It’s obviously very special to be in and around all the boys again,” he said.

“Wearing an England shirt again is such a special feeling. It was something I’d missed but it was something I didn’t think too much about.

“I kept my head down and stayed in my lane and just tried to do as well as I could. It’s a very special feeling and I’m excited for the tournament to get started.”

Banton joined up with the England squad ahead of their third ODI against India in which he joint-top scored with a composed 38 batting at number three, clearing the rope twice in the process, to mark the end of his five-year hiatus from the ODI stage and his first England appearance since 2022.

Banton joked that he ‘doesn’t want to speak too soon’ when asked about his current form – he knows more than anyone how quickly things can change in cricket.

Instead, he hopes to take everything in his stride and enjoy playing the game he fell out of love with a few years ago.

It was a period which, despite being difficult, has helped him in the long run.

He said: “You don’t wish that upon anyone, but I guess that’s part of life. I’ve learnt so much about myself away from cricket as well as through cricket.

“I’m not feeling sorry for myself, I just had a bad run of form, that’s sometimes how cricket is. But it’s put me in a better position now and it’s giving me a better understanding of life and cricket.

“There’s obviously always pressure when you’re playing for England. Playing for your country is the greatest thing you can do.

“But I don’t want to put too much pressure on myself, I haven’t really the last year or so. I feel I’ve got a bit more of an understanding about my game at the moment. I just want to enjoy it and try and contribute towards the team.”

The ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025 will be the first instalment of the competition since 2017 and Banton’s goal is for England, who have reached the semi-finals of the competition twice, to lift the trophy come March 9.

“We won’t get too far ahead of ourselves,” he added. “We’ll just take each game as it comes, enjoy training and enjoy the time off.

“Pakistan is a great place so hopefully we can get out and do some cool things while we’re here.”

The competition could be a springboard for Banton to cement his place in England’s white-ball teams on a more permanent basis, while his County Championship form for Somerset has even opened up talk of a Test call-up in the future.

But the tall right-hander is just focused on doing his bit for the team and knows if he continues performing well, the rest will look after itself.

“I’m not going to get too far ahead and get caught up with all that,” he said.

“I’m just going to keep doing what I’ve been doing and hopefully that stuff takes care of itself. I’d love to play and love to do well, but if that’s not to happen then I’ll still try and learn as much as I can.”

The England team arrived in Pakistan on Monday evening ahead of their opening match against Australia and will have three training sessions prior to the clash at Gaddafi Stadium – in the wake of comments in the media regarding an alleged lack of practice in the recent 3-0 ODI series defeat in India.

Banton said: “There’s a fine balance between too much training and not enough. It’s also important to have your downtime as well.

“When you play a lot of cricket, training all the time isn’t always the answer sometimes.

“We’ve got three days ahead of our first game and then there’s a few days between [future] games so there’ll be time to get practice in.”

England’s opening fixture will also be McCullum’s first match leading England in a limited-overs tournament.

Banton spoke of his excitement about working again with the 43-year-old New Zealander, who he described as ‘one of the greatest players to have ever played the game’.

He added: “To be able to talk to him is very special. I worked with him a few years ago in the IPL, which was unreal, so to be back with him is very special. It’s pretty surreal.”
