An excellent knock of 219* today in Round 10 of Quaid-e-Azam trophy; Should make him a contender for a comeback to the Pakistan side for the series vs South Africa?

Highest first-class score today of 219* for Usman Salahuddin

24 first-class 100s, 48 first-class 50s, first-class average of over 47

Only played 1 Test in which in the 2nd innings he outscored Azhar Ali, Haris Sohail, Asad Shafiq & Sarfaraz Ahmed

Never picked again.

Pakistan cricket at its best.

In Pakistan, if you don’t announce yourself with a bang on debut or in your second game, you are already written off.

Abdullah Shafique didn’t even play the Shaheen’s game today

The guy didn't even get a second game

Damn.

You better score that 150 in your first game...raise the level of expectations to Mars, and better hope that you don’t have more than 2 failures in the next few games

Breaking into Pakistan is as hard as breaking into Peak Barcelona XI (valdes-Villa up front), but we are still a below par side for a reason!

He's a genuine good replacement if one of our openers fails in New Zealand, and that SA series could be good for him if we create dust bowls, making SA's fast bowling attack virtually toothless along with our own. From then on, whichever team has the better spin bowling options will win, and we beat them heavily on that front. Yasir + Gohar should do well in tandem.

Hopefully Mohammad Wasim has his eyes on players like Usman, Saud Shakeel, and others.

Plenty of spots up for grabs in pakistans middle order so should hopefully get a recall at somepoint.

He definitely deserved more than 1 game with his track record.

But why do that when you can play legendary match winners like Shafiq and Azhar?

He would’ve been a better choice then Asad Bradman, still can come in & take Harri’s place

Guy scores 20+ 100s with an avg of mid-high 40s, somehow gets nod for the test team and outperforms some seniors in his debut match only to get dropped after his very first match. He had a higher average in FC cricket on his test debut and almost double the amount of centuries than both Azhar Ali and Asad Shafiq.

This case is an example of Pak cricket and its selection/ player management polices of last decade and so in a nutshell.

As I said elsewhere, after top scorer Kamran Ghulam, Usman Salahuddin's faced the most number of balls in this season's QEA Trophy so he knows how to occupy the crease.

Was ludicrous that he was given one Test at Headingley of all places and not given a look thereafter while Asad Shafiq was accomodated.

Face didn't fit and he didn't have too many friends at PCB.

He will be considered once he's 35. Until then we will have Azhar, Abid, Fawad and also Asad Shafiq make another comeback.

Usman and Fawad should have been the replacements for Misbah and Younis 3 years ago, proper seasoned first class cricketers.

Fawad's time has passed, but Salahuddin can still serve for another couple of years while the likes of Haider Ali get some first class experience under their belt. Should be in the next squad along with Saud Shakeel, would be a nice contrast to Saud's and Babar's more attacking style of play.

Kamran Ghulam is having a monster season and could also be considered for the national team, although I'd prefer if he played and performed in a few games for the Shaheen's first

One of many things that is wrong with Pakistan Cricket. Quite a few cricketers actually in the past decade have been neglected or given one off chances and then written off only to be then brought up the discussion tables and realize oh oh, he's 30+ now we should look to invest in a youngster now.

Always thought he should have been given a go much better then the likes of fawad, azhar and asad.

Haven’t we got Azhar, Haris, Fawad*, Shan, Abid as people he could potentially replace.

Not talking about a pound-for-pound replacement in the sense of batting order, but feel like at least one of Azhar, Haris etc will have to make way at the end of this series. Expecting Haris to be shown the door.

Needs to perform in the PSL to get a chance to play Test cricket. After all that seems to be the criteria these days for selection in the 5 day format.

It was a toss-up between Agha Salman and Usman Salahuddin.

Agha got the nod because he can score quicker than Usman and he can bowl a bit.

Usman Salahuddin is the superior batsman out of the two. That should be the main criteria when picking a batsman.

My impression is that Salahuddin bats too slowly to be successful at test level, his strike-rate hovers around 45 in first-class cricket generally.

The clarification by Wasim in the press conference yesterday about selection criteria seemed to indicate that it's not just about volume of runs but how you score them as well.

The Pakistan team is already crippled by batsmen (other than Babar) that can get bogged down very easily and fail to rotate the strike, leading to scoreboard pressure and the inevitable strangle by the opposition. You don't want another batsman that'll struggle to get the ball off the square.

The toss up was between a batter and an all rounder not a good toss up

usman should be tossed up against kamran and saud
Agha should be a toss up between nawaz
