Amongst the cringiest/forced video appearances that I have seen in my life (similar to when we make our kids say salam to an annoying uncle), this video of Haris Rauf and Mohammad Hasnain takes the prize.

Clearly Hasnain in no mood to talk after almost giving away the game to Liam Dawson in the 4th T20I but PCB getting Rauf to talk out of his hat and to somehow praise Hasnain.

Why?

<div style="width: 100%; height: 0px; position: relative; padding-bottom: 56.250%;"><iframe src="https://streamable.com/e/u7vm0u" frameborder="0" width="100%" height="100%" allowfullscreen style="width: 100%; height: 100%; position: absolute;"></iframe></div>

I think they wanted to buck him up. Rauf was cheering him and being a top lad in this video. Don't see it as a humiliation. Players are not snowflakes, this only makes them mentally stronger. It could have been better had they let Hasnain speak. Hes miked up tho, so maybe the video is not edited by pcb properly.

He was in no mood to be interviewed or put in front of cameras - they made him look like an idiot.

It makes no sense. It shows they have little understanding of a player’s mental state—as much as the coach likes to talk about it when he gets questioned about the middle order. They need to stop trying to toughen him up like and need to hire a sports psychologist to help him deal with pressure of certain situations. So often even fans can tell when he’s going to start struggling. He has potential to be really good or just wash away like M Sami. When there has already been so much invested in him—getting him psychological help will not hurt. Can only help the team in the long run.

Haris Rauf:

“To be honest, I didn’t. My focus was on the game - Maine nahi dekha kaun gaya and Kaun nahi gaya!"

“Mein plan kar raha tha. Thoda idea tha kahan ball kiya jaaye (I got the idea where to bowl at him). To get his wicket was the turning point, I had the confidence,” Rauf would say at the end of the game.

“ I knew if I bowl my best ball to tailender I will get his wicket.”

Seems Hasnain got abuse on social media but also maybe Babar not happy with him too.

I agree with you, very uncomfortable viewing. As he was bowling the over he got smashed around, I didn't see any of the senior players calming him down. He was bowling badly that over and you could see on his face he was feeling really bad about letting the team down.

Tough lad

Takes guts to stand in front of the camera after such an over

Deplorable - he might have got smahed in his final over but his early spell laid the platform for the team to mount the successful defence.

As for Babar and the senior players in the team (Rizwan & Haris) I am very disappointed. Instead of slowing things down during that bad over, they were dropping their shoulders and the blame game was beginning.

Whenever a player is letting the team down - it's down to the senior players to not give advice - but to calm them down. This is why Eoin Morgan and Dhoni were great T20 captains, they knew sometimes bowlers can get smashed, the best thing is to calm them down and behave like nothing happened.

Part of life and part of cricket.

We've been in ecstasy when Asif Ali and Naseem Shah did similar things in recent times so can't go overboard in the criticism of Hasnain.

That's why I think it was a great gesture for Haris to talk him up and great for the PCB to get him infront of the camera.

Getting him infront of the camera means the fear factor is gone and he wouldn't have to wallow in the dressing room wondering what was been said.

I agree, this is stupid, if he wasn't going to speak, then they have no business in chucking him there just to look like a goofball.

Good on Rauf for putting a hand around the kid and talking about the early wickets Hasnain took that led to Pakistan being in the position they were.

Unfortunately T20 can be a brutal game and every bowler takes a beating, even great ones like Ajmal. I hope Hasnain doesn't get too down on himself and even use Rauf as an inspiration as someone everyone disliked & criticized during death overs but has become one of the most reliable & best death bowlers in the past couple of years.

Yeah, I was one of those who just stereotyped Haris as a hot head. Truth is, he’s a very intense player and puts it all into his game. Him crediting and putting an arm around Hasnain shows great leadership. It’s beginning to show now that Haris is becoming more responsible. Given how we like to churn through players like anything, we rarely see them fully develop because as fans, we expect instant results, because every new player has to have the instant impact of an Akram, an Inzy or an Amir. God forbid if they fail, they get relegated to the domestics where they rarely develop into the best version of themselves.

Haris, clearly not by the PCB’s design has shown such development. He’s become better technically, he’s improved his game awareness, his fitness and fielding is now the best in the team. But emotionally now, he’s bowling as a reference point. And he should be appreciated for his self improvement.

The day that the PCB can be bothered to actually, by design, set out development plans for its players, is when we’ll see them realise their full potential. And that’s when Pakistan will be something.

However, given the shoddy way Haider has been handled, how half baked Hasnain is, and how we’ve picked both Dahani and Mo Wasim too early, I’m not holding my breath.

I think this was done to cheer him up. His early wickets of Hales and Jack's was vital.

I might be seeing it a different way but it seems they are still giving him credit for his opening spell which brought Pakistan into the game. If they just show Haris than it may look like Haris takes all the credit and Hasnain is punished for his last over. Just my thought.

The idea of "senior players" seems to be outdated to me. Seems like being a "senior player" happens spontaneously at a random point in a player's career or age, comes with vague responsibilities, unclear expectations, and job security.

Job security and compensation should purely be performance based.

In terms of on field coaching responsibilities those expectations should be communicated clearly and assigned with concrete effective dates as well as definitive titles. Could this be a responsibility assigned to the Vice Captain? Hasnain won't be the last inexperienced Pakistani player in need of coaching in the middle of a match and it's unfortunate he was left to fend for himself.

To cheer him up by shoving him in front of camera while he stands around speechless is not the way to do it aside form the fact you're making it obvious that he did terrible.

You don't want to show that off, honestly Pak players and support staff need to be coached how to handle the media in a professional sense not these paindu type behaviours.

Exactly my point.

Especially after it seems he got a lot of tongue lashing after his over.

I don't know if Hasnain spoke before or after this clip.
The intent was fine, the execution perhaps not.
I think Haris Rauf's gesture was very nice. Giving credit to Hasnain for his early spell which created the opening in the first place.
I used to not like Haris Rauf's hot-headedness. I especially didn't like when he slapped Kamran Ghulam. But in every respect over the last two years he just continues to develop. He's taking advantage of the professional setup to become more and more professional from where he started.

This is 2022.

There needs to be a better grasp/attempt at PR

This looked as if Hasnain was being held-up, the guy was distraught and didn't look at ease at all

He did not speak in this clip which PCB put up.

Hasnain looks like a really good lad. He has pace and swing. Hopefully he can keep working hard and once he get's real control of his line and length, he will become a very good bowler, especially in the longer formats.

That I fully agree with. Hasnain looks terror-stricken, ashamed, he doesn't want to be there, so don't put him in that position. They can be awkward in their PR attempts but at least they're trying.

This guy has potential but I'm beginning to see a mental midget like m sami In him hope he doesn't end up like him .

Agreed 100%.

Every great bowler that ended up as ATG or GOAT all have had at least one day where they got a phainty.

It’s not like Hasnain was bowling trash the whole game.

That over aside, he actually did pretty well to maintain the pressure. Rauf had gotten tonked in the past too, can’t look at these individual over thrashings too hard. Have to look at trends over time. He’s young and has the skills.

Babar needs to deploy patience.

Haris rauf classy and admirable and a true team man

Babar, rizwan acting like they’re legends…it’s because of their batting pakistan was in this situation to begin with

Doesnt surprise anyone

After what they did in NZ

Where the 2 worst performing bowlers Naseem Shah and the left arm spinner who got like 0 for 150 were put in front thr camera for post day interviews.

PCB's social media guy is an idiot....overshared all the time and posts like a teenager on vacation

Some tough love is necessary in this sport to grow up.

He is mentally very weak and shouldn't even be allowed to Field in pressure situation let alone bowling, however his new ball skills are right amongst the best in the world currently.

It's just about using him correctly with the new ball with a specific field set. I wish he could either bowl yorkers or indippers as well.

Except for having the ability of playing a couple of good looking strokes, I don't find myself too much of fan of Babar Azam anymore.

Kind of clueless and dumb of a captain who seems to have a very narrow tunnel vision and he is absolutely not a good and inspiring communicator.

There is hardly anything in him that indicates the qualities of a good and likeable leader.

Babar needs to take a chill pill. He’s acting sus lately. Don’t go down the route of other emotional captains my friend.

You did nothing in the Asia cup, nobody in the team could say anything to you because you’re captain. The young lad did fine except for that over. Take notes from other prolific captains like Misbah, Dhoni, Imran and Ponting. When their bowlers got thrashed, they would console them. Not glare at them.

If you had a captain, you’d be getting a proper phainty for slowing down before a 50 or a 100 for stat padding, costing us runs.

So don’t be that guy. Have a heart.

Leave it to Pakistani management and captains (post the great Ul-Haq) to shatter confidence of our brave youngsters.

I think putting him in front of camera after a bad game is not a good idea.

It can impact his confidence negatively.

Definitely. A true leader is more than a consistent performer, or even a tactically apt player. Good leaders inspire confidence and don’t get carried away when it gets hard. There’s a reason Morgan and Dhoni are held in such regard and were kept around even after their playing ability had dwindled considerably. Babar doesn’t have the constant pressure of being challenged for his captaincy like has been the case for most of Pakistan cricket’s history. Onus is on him to develop as a player’s captain as much as it is to get better tactically. While he has arguably made progress tactically—he’s not really improving as a team leader. Arguments or anger on the pitch or the field have been a theme.

He is the only player guarantees to be a starter in all 3 formats so he’ll be a captain for a long time and will rightfully be given a long rope

I would agree with you except you keep mentioning Misbah as some sort of great captain..

He single handedly destroyed many careers and kept playing Azhar / Asad for far too long. Haris Sohail, Usman Salahuddin and Saud Shakeel should have all debuted under his captaincy but were left to waste their prime years playing domestic cricket..

wrong.
Shaheen and Rizwan are the other two.

I am not a fan of Misbah but I think giving his example by the other poster wasn't good enough. I think Young Naseem Shah was also put in front of camera by Misbah and Waqar in an after the match presser in Australia when Naseem had a bad day.

Whoever put Husnain in front of the camera wanted to troll him badly.

And good leaders NEVER do that.
They always defend their team members from public wrath and humiliation, and encourage and support them to instill a great amount of confidence.

As I stated, we do not have a system and culture of producing leaders. We simply don't have the foggiest of ideas of how to become a good leader. All 220 million of us.

This trend was set up by Misbah when he did this to young Naseem Shah in Australia.
