PCB chief hints at 'major surgery' within team following T20 World Cup loss to India

Following Pakistan's loss to India in the T20 World Cup on Sunday, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi has indicated that the national team will undergo major changes.

Last night, India triumphed over Pakistan by six runs in the T20 World Cup showdown. Rishabh Pant scored 42 runs, while Jasprit Bumrah took three wickets. Pakistan's 113 runs fell short of India's 119, significantly diminishing their chances of qualifying for the Super Eight stage.

"It seemed initially that a minor surgery would suffice, but following the extremely poor performance against India, it is clear that a major surgery is necessary," Naqvi remarked while speaking to the journalists after the match.

Naqvi highlighted the current low point in Pakistani cricket. "Our performance is at its lowest. Improving the team's performance is our biggest challenge," he noted.

He hinted that the nation will soon witness substantial changes within the team. "We need to prepare the team for the Champions Trophy, and it is time to give new talent sitting on the sidelines a chance," Naqvi stated.

The PCB chairman further emphasised the goal of making the Pakistani cricket team one of the best in the world. "I am well aware of what is happening within the team and the reasons behind the defeat."

Naqvi concluded by acknowledging the nation's expectations. "The nation does not expect such disappointing performances from the cricket team. We must deliver better results," he added.

He will do a surgery?

He has developed a habit of making changes every month, and will likely remove Babar Azam as captain now.

This is beyond surgery , populism at its best PCB chief will he be accountable for removing SSA and then bringing back failures like Imad , on whose Advice he got Usman signed for Pakistan

We have no real talent coming in

Changing players won't do anything. Surgery is required somewhere else
This is what our emotional and naive fans don't understand. Changing faces just in the team just doesn't cut it. You have to fix the overall system and unfortunately that also means that Mr. Naqvi also needs to come under scrutiny because he came without any merit. Who will check on him? Prime Minister? Who themselves are beneficiaries of a similar system.

Pakistan has to change the culture, it don’t matter if there are no talent. But you have to change the culture of nepotism, agent power, player power, factions, mediocrity. Follow the example of small cricketing nations like New Zealand and South Africa. Once you develop the right culture, everything will fall in place and even average players will grow to be great players.

A culture of growth and professionalism has to be instilled top down. Forget the cricket results. Results will fix themselves once you fix the underlying issue which is nepotism, mediocrity and favoritism.

First change should be him getting sacked. It was clear as day and everyone knew what was about to unfold, these defeats and beyond mediocre performances aren't unexpected.

Unprofessional guys like him are the issue, all they seem to do is talk a good fight. He played a big part in picking this team and now is publicly shifting blame to the players. Pakistan are still in the tournament and comments like this hurt the team even more. This sort of stuff should be done behind closed doors.

Need to get rid of Babar, Rizwan and Shaheen first step along with Ifti, Shadab, Rauf, Usman, Saim, Azam K.
2nd step get rid of these useless selectors
3rd step resign yourself,
Even if you get rid of the players in step 1..

The next selection committee will become overwhelmed by the strong social media campaigns run in favour of these players. This is the curse we have incurred.

Wasim Khan
Imran Khan
Misbah ul Haq
Waqar Younis
Ramiz Raja
Saqlain Mushtaq
Mohammad Yousuf
Inzimam ul Haq

These people must be put on trial one day for their crimes towards Pakistan cricket

It's funny isn't it. As a chairman you pick your captain, make your team and then ask everyone to shut up for a month and show support.

Then 2 games into the event. You throw the team under the bus by publicly stating that major surgery needs to be done.

How unprofessional is this guy, talking like that mid tournament..

There's no denying the mess we are in and also the changes that are needed but for the love of God please show some professionalism and stop making inflammatory statements like this. No where else in world cricket would someone in his position do this.

First surgery is finding gun openers

Second surgery is removing shaheen he's finished he looked proper scared yesterday full of nervous energy.

Rauf is also hit and miss and wasim alluded that If you don't bowl in longer format you will never hit the right line and lengths and develop your bowling you can't have a 4 over specialist who gives freebies every over and can't even bowl to the set field and is generally brainless.

Remove them 2 as well.

And it's time you back a proper spinner no more reillu kattas like shadab and imad

We got rid of 2 other reillu kattas like nawaz and faheem ashraf these type of bits and pieces cricketers are neither here or there.

I think Naqvi did a good job, for the first time in history he got Shaheen, Aamir, Naseem and Rauf to bowl together... Something this forum dreamt of. They had a good warm up schedule prior to the WC and he also got Imad, the forum favorite and to-be saviour into the team.

Abrar was also a very good selection, although team management is not playing him. He got Kirsten and Gillispie, two high profile coaches. I don't think in such a short time, he could have done anything more.

Reality is that Pakistan cricket is close to being finished. From whatever I'm witnessing with the associate teams and the way they are progressing, esp in T20 Format, I can very confidently say that they will surge ahead of teams like Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe,West Indies in about 2-3 years time, if they haven't already.

I remember I once went after you as well because you made some comment about Rizwan being one the best batsmen in the world or something along those lines. I don’t forget posters here who I feel paddle the incorrect narrative.

Now you see Pakistan is close to being finished lol. Why? You have two top rank batsmen in the top 3…what’s the issue now?

he isn't getting sacked.

Paraphrasing the words of Walter White in Breaking Bad - Mohsin Naqvi isn't afraid of a knock on the door. He is the one who knocks.

Heard these long ago. But will never happen. PCB will arrange some series against USA/Canada/Uganda... and will ask them to send their C/D teams. Prepare flat pitches and Babar/Riz/Ifti will score for fun and top in the ranking.

Shaheen needs to be banned from cricket for deliberately under-performing. Rauf is just a rubbish bowler. Imad and Amir will retire after 2 matches. Only Nasim should stay along with Afridi ... and news bowlers.

I don't think I would have said Rizwan is the best batter in the world but I don't see Rizwan and Babar as the problem either.

I know in your view if Rizwan and Babar don't open then all the problems in the world for Pak cricket team are resolved, I find that strange but I cannot argue with someone who is so obsessed with this view.

I think Pakistan simply do not have good batters, their middle order is non existent. I can still agree with your view of dropping Babar and Rizwan from the team like Aussies have dropped Smith if there was abundance of talent in Pakistan and players were knocking the door down, but beggers can't be choosers, Pakistan simply do not have enough talent to be able to drop their two most consistent players.

We really need a foreign selector supported by local analytes. All our former locals are cursed. May try Younish Khan.

Have you ever thought why I would be obsessed with this view?

I’ve been watching, learning, reading and writing cricket for 20+ years. Why am I obsessed with this one view?

Time for fresh start if possible. Need to get rid of both Babar/Riz. We better loose to USA/Canada/Uganda/Nepal/Papua New Guinee with new players.

Even if I agree that Babar and Rizwan should not open still that cannot be the only reason for Pakistan's failures. You still need other players who can bat!

They tried Saim Ayub and I think even he failed miserably.

So we resort back to Babar and Rizwan?

I’m not discussing this any further with you.

Keep your views about “Pakistan cricket is close to demise” to yourself. Either admit they are the core of the problem without making excuses, and then pass your strong opinion here.

I would normally agree with this, but to be brutally frank, these players have lost the right to have their dignity preserved. Public humiliation is never usually the right way to go mid-tournament, but does anyone really think results will get any worse because of a loss of morale?

These guys are done, the sooner the blood-letting begins the better.

We tried too many young guns in the last 3 years in our middle order and they all failed spectacularly so what any news? Suppose we have this lineup after surgery

Haris
Shamyl
Haseebullah
Tayyab Tahir
Kamran Ghulam
Arafat Minhas
Amir Jamal
Shaheen
Naseem
Abrar
Abbas Afridi

This team looks even more horrible then the current one and I have picked the next most obvious young talent lined up for us.

Yeah let’s replace our miseries from Rizwan with Haseebullah

The point is we are going down the hill and next team will be even more worse. Our U19 kids were not even timing the dead straight balls at knee length height and there was no spinner who can actually turn the ball.

To be honest I wasn't thinking about the players. The majority of them as you rightly point out do not deserve alot of respect. Its just by doing things like this the PCB constantly manage to show our beautiful nation in such a poor light and we deserve better than that from people such as this man.

You still need to identify issues in this team and not look to repeat them in your next crop of players brother
And what to do if the next crop of players can't even play dead straight knee length deliveries and can't spin the ball at all?

Even the gully cricket level (80% of it is already finished) has gone down the gutter , now days we have 14/15 years old guys in some random street playing cricket for laughs and doing batta bowl and batsmen not managing to deal with it, this thing wasn't even there 20 years ago. Gully cricket was like a super extreme passion thing in Karachi specially during Ramadan, But now the cricket is just played for the laughs.

I seriously failed to understand how come Indians cricket craze are growing up where as the cricket is becoming a non interesting sports in our big cities.

The world has moved on and people still don’t know the root of the problem.

As long as we allow players to play for themselves and their stats, then this is what we’ll get.

A lot of people wanted this. Well you’ve got it. Was it worth it?

The point is we are going down the hill and next team will be even more worse. Our U19 kids were not even timing the dead straight balls at knee length height and there was no spinner who can actually turn the ball.

Maybe we need to hire foreign coaches for the youth teams then instead of wasting resources on the older players.

Nobody is understanding this the reason for decline in our cricket is Lack of Test cricket. With these tape ballers and hacks you will be humiliated here and there routinely

No matter who you bring in the team.. there won't be much of a difference. The skills are just not there.
You need to start by working on under 15s so that after 5-6 years situation is better.

A chairman shouldn’t be picking the captain. It is the selectors job not the chairman.
Pakistan is the only cricket team in the world where the chairman of PCB interferes so much in cricketing decisions.

He should focus on his actual KRA which should be to build up money for the board/players.

Nobody is understanding this the reason for decline in our cricket is Lack of Test cricket. With these tape ballers and hacks you will be humiliated here and there routinely

The decline is due to the state of the country.
If Pakistan becomes a stable country, the cricket would automatically improve drastically.

Everything is interconnected. First step should be to make Pakistan a healthy nation and then rest of the problems would automatically be solved.

Little to no talent is coming forward. There is no new batsman (one can feel excited about), no spinner and no allrounder etc. The reason is First Class cricket in Pakistan is riddled with Nepotism and bribery. At international level there is a lot scrutiny, hence the nepotism and corruption is not as apparent (yet we still have players like Shan and Azam). But the real reason behind the dearth of talent is the lack of merit at the first class level. PCB needs to do a talent hunt for batters, spinners and bring them into first class.

Would be hilarious if they fire Kirstein lol.

Who is responsible for the domestic cricket infrastructure?

Need to get rid of Babar, Rizwan and Shaheen first step along with Ifti, Shadab, Rauf, Usman, Saim, Azam K.
2nd step get rid of these useless selectors
3rd step resign yourself,
This is only the way forward

Great, let all the players know before they are being eliminated that they are on their way out, and major changes are coming. So that they even have more reason not to fight for the remaining games!

Leadership in this country is the problem.

We had some positive steps when Rameez was in charge (even though he made some mistakes as well). However since then, it's been one chaotic change of events after another. No stability. No consistency.

Kirsten should be made chief selector and he should be given reports from a network of scouts. It will cost nothing to set up 200 scouts across the country.

They need to remove this selection panel because nepotism, parchi slips and dosti gets in the way. Also they are lazy, they just look at PSL stats. They selected an obese person and a non existent middle order. They add no value.

Give Kirsten the authority to select the squad.

We actually require a reset and reboot. Frankly, I'd be happy to see most of the current lot not playing for Pak ever again. These shameless individuals have made the team and nation a laughing stock.

There are no standards, no accountability, its a complete and utter shambles.

He has developed a habit of making changes every month, and will likely remove Babar Azam as captain now.

Rizwan should have been made the white ball captain when Babar resigned , but they handed the T20 to Shaheen but didn’t even wait to see what his captaincy is made of.

If Babar cannot field a deserving 11 on the field which is the least thing he can do , but keep on favouring his buddies then his removal along with his buddies is good step indeed. I would drop him from T20s and appoint someone else who is tactically good and give them a consistent run till next WT20.

Re-appointing Babar was a bad decision especially just after 1 series

A major overhaul is indeed needed, for the last 5 years till now they are still struggling to put a decent middle order , keep on feeding it with bits and pieces , if someone who performs gets sidelined for the bits and pieces.. Saud Shakeel , Agha Salman and Tayyab Tahir all proved to be good middle order but they keep going with Shadab and Ifthikar and also added Azam khan to that list. Even Shan Masood and Haris played a good tournament in Australia 🇦🇺 WT20 2 years ago.

One way to save Pakistan cricket is to hire 2 foreign world class coaches, one for selection committee and one for Pakistan coaching.

That 55M pcb money must be put to use

Wahab was the culprit being as sports minister, chief selector and senior team manager

He is the one who dropped Shan Masood and Haris who did very decently in the last WT20 where Pak are the finalists.

That is fine but selecting someone who cannot field for 10 overs in a match , keeps jogging around. I have seen the fatso speak , such an arrogant guy who will give a damn about his fitness

Naqvi Saab himself is responsible for reappointing the incompetent Babar Azam as captain.

Is Kirsten and his staff ready to come, stay and work in Pakistan for months?

Pls take strong action , remove Wahab first followed by Babar as captain.

Not qualifying for the Super 8s as professional cricketers in an easy group comparatively

Pls sack zimbabar , enough of his backing and favouring for his friends
Kristen in the last press conference clearly wants a sack. You can easily tell he's the only no nonsense coach.

He didn't say any crapola, he outright said, Babar is a bad captain his decions suck and the team sucks. That's it, Short and sweat. Granted he didn't say it the way I said it, but you get the point.

If he's chief selector, problem is solved and Pakistan becomes a mid card team again like it always has been where it easily bullies minnows and weaker teams like Sri lanka and Bangladesh, loses to top teams but pulls an upset here and their and maybe flukes a tournament here and their.

^^ This is what 2017 Pakistan was, and what 2009 Pakistan was as well as the 1990 era version.

Misbah and babar ruined and collapsed it

What a brilliant strategy to say all of this while your team is still playing the tournament. Absolutely logical!!!

People may like it or not, but PCB's affairs have been heavily politicized. Politicians have infiltrated the system with the behind-the-scenes input of you-know-who. It's bound to be cursed. Whatever they have touched has turned to dust ranging from the economy to cricket. This will continue to happen until you-know-who's back off from cricket.

Agree with you remove all the big players and their parchis

Shaheen and his parchi Rauf removed
Rizwan and his parchi Ifthikar removed
Babar and his parchi Shadab removed
Wahab and his parchi Azam khan removed

Then form the team and name probably Fakhar Zaman as captain.

Pakistanis loved to use weird metaphors ,Branding and analogies.

Jazba Junoon Surgery Cornered Tigers
Boom Boom Kudrat Ka Nizam Keeps the world entertained but back it up with performance.(Including that of PCB chairman)

Does he even know what surgery means? Is he removing or repairing or stitching?

Utter nonsense if he said that. He's the chairmen of PCB and needs to wait for the team to return home before giving such statements.

I want Babar to be sacked for his backing and favouring of friends and buddies despite of their poor performances costing the team

Apart from that , Babar led the team wel, on the field ytd. His captaincy was the reason India bundled for 120 , other wise they would have set 150+ as target.. his bowling changes were spot on. His field placing was also good, having fielder in the inner circle were most of the catches were taken big turnaround to choke the Indian side

Took the words out of my mouth.

This is ridiculous even if he's right.

Honestly bro none of that matters. Too little too late. What we saw yesterday is something we shpuld have seen 4 years ago, This is his 4th and a half year of being a captain, he should have learned these things earlier.

At best he becomes another Misbah who was was a great captain on the field, but his nepotism, prejudice favouring towards crapola players like Asad shafiq in odi as well as his chilled attitude that caused fitness issues, fixing and alot of other social media drama cough shehzad cough, turned misbah into a horrible white ball captain.

Or at worst he is what he is now, aka pakistan's worst captain in its entire history being the only one to lose to USA aka the lowest point ever for Pakistan.

None of this changes the fact that the whole team become unfit social media pretenders under him.

Our fans need to wake up and stop making brands and worshipping these selfish players after their marketing machinery brainwashes them. Even Azam Khan somehow had a fan base in journalist and fan circles
