• “I enjoy both batting and bowling and strive to give my 100 per cent every match,” says Fahad Munir

Potchefstroom, 2 February 2020:

After outclassing Afghanistan in the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup quarter-final on Friday, a confident Pakistan U19 team began their preparations for the semi-final against arch-rivals India with an extended three-hour training and nets session at the NWU Sports Village which includes the JB Marks Oval, the venue of the semi-final clash on Tuesday, 4th February.

On the sidelines of the practice session all-rounder Fahad Munir spoke about his performances in the tournament so far and his expectations from his team and his own form ahead of the big semi-final clash.

The left-handed top-order batsman and leg-spinner is a vital cog in the Rohail Nazir-led team. The Lahore-born has made useful contributions in the event so far, especially in the crucial wins against Zimbabwe and in the Super League quarter-final Afghanistan at the Willowmoore Park, Benoni.

Fahad was not needed with bat or ball in Pakistan’s thumping seven-wicket win against Scotland in their opening match of the tournament, but was right in the thick of action against Zimbabwe.

Against Zimbabwe, he was involved in two crucial partnerships in the Pakistan innings (46 with Mohammad Shehzad for the second-wicket) and (66 with Qasim Akram for the fourth-wicket) as he went onto complete his half-century, scoring 53 off 79 balls, to help Pakistan recover from a dodgy 73 for three to post 294 for nine in their 50 overs.

Against Afghanistan, Fahad made two vital breakthroughs with the ball on his way to figures of two for 29 in seven useful overs.

The talented all-rounder, who idolises West Indian legend Brian Lara, is hoping to make a similar contribution as Pakistan aim to seal a final’s berth by overcoming the defending champions India on Tuesday.

Fahad Munir said: “So far we have had a great tournament. The team has done very well, while I am also happy with my all-round contribution for the team. I enjoy both batting and bowling and strive to give my 100 per cent every match.

“We lost early wickets [against Zimbabwe], I settled down and batted with patience which helped me get a half-century and provided a foundation for a late-order flourish which helped us post a good total.

“While bowling in the quarter-final against Afghanistan, the wicket suited me and I bowled at a good line and length which gave me good results in the match. I aim to maintain that and compel the batsmen to make mistakes; I follow a simple bowling plan.

“I have worked on my leg-spin bowling, during our preparatory camp at the NCA in Lahore. The coaches especially bowling coach Mushtaq Ahmed worked hard with me which helped me improve considerably as a bowler.

“Against India, the ambition is to win the match and perform according to the expectations. The support of the fans is very important and I request them to pray for us.

Young fastmen are coached by Waqar and leggies by Mushie, aren;t they lucky.

If are goingto have any chance of progressing then this guy needs to bat 9. His strike rate has been awful throughout u19 level.

Limited batsman
His Innings against Afghanistan put Pakistan under pressure.

Bowling was pretty decent actually, batting not so much, but he did score a 50 in the prior match so perhaps need to see more before judging him

While batting against Afghan spinners, he was clearly nervous and under pressure as he was unable to pick the deliveries of chainaman bowler Noor Ahmed. He didn't look like a proper no. 4 batsman.
After the world cup, he needs to work very hard on his batting against spin bowling, if he wants to play for Pakistan as an allrounder.
Though as a bowler he looked very decent prospect.

Fahad - slow start but needs to kick on at some point - at the moment happy to help Haider.

Had the torture of watching him bat. Looks like another glorified tail-ender and fake all-rounder like Shadab and Faheem.

In Pakistan, if you can pick up a bat, you are classified as an all-rounder. What a circus.

No future for player like this. Should try different profession.

I said it the day this garbage was selected that he rubbish. How on earth does he keep getting selected and then batting ahead of batsmens like irfan, haris, irfan. Shame on you ijaz Ahmed.

I know you don't like them but they are still miles better then this rubbish.

Must have a very powerful connection for him to play in U19 World Cup. Nepotism/region based selection is destroying our cricket

I've seen number 11's in club cricket have more to their game than this guy. He has no shots and can't read length. How does anyone call him a batsman? His future might be his bowling.

Have a feeling Ijaz trusted him more as a bowler and had to accommodate him somehow....

I had given my judgement on him after the last match. He proved me right. Worse than Tanvir as a batsmen and Azhar Ali as a bowler.

Guy is 23, if not 25 and simply not for FC level, at least not with bat.

They often say, no. 3 defines your batting and today PAK U19 proved that. You have to be something special to score a duck of 16 balls in power play!!!!

Joke player looks more than his written age of 17 years and 39 days.

One down is a crucial batting position. Shows nefarious intent of Ijaz Ahmed. Wasim Akram has always backed this pathetic person. Investigation should be done against him and junior selection cmmte. on the make up of this u19

Come to think of it, wasn’t Wasim Akram part of the committee that selected Ijaz as U19 coach?

Absolutely.

This is the misfortune of our system as one can ascertain by the name of the loser who is backing him. Zakir Khan was fired from Acc for his poor performance but his backer is Imran Khan himself which has helped him stay in the board for long time.

I doubt Ijaz Ahmed was ever considered before for any role by any cricket board official.

Fahad Munir - Selected Due To Connections?

He cost us this game.

Batting at 3, he played 16 dot balls and was out for a duck.

Almost cost us the previous game. Scored 2 off 18.

He is one of the worst batsmen I've seen.

He didn't even play the recent u19 ONE DAY tournament.

He has played 13 innings as a U19 batsman. Averages 23.

MUCH MUCH better u19 batsmen in Pakistan.

This guy was terrible.

Failed vs SA in SA last year too.

Failed in u19 ASIA Cup last year.

Who is he related to?

He bats like Sohail Tanvir without the ability to clear the boundary.

We deserve to be humliated for selecting a player like him. We deserve to be lowly ranked team because of being morally corrupt

This lad must have some behind the scenes backing as he has looked rather ordinary as a cricketer.

Basit Ali was telling a story on YT channel that there was threats being made to him to select someone ahead of Shadab Khan in 2016 WC. Very much possible

It's possible but number 3 is not his spot. That's an injustice to the player himself. His best chance of performing would've been lower down the order. It's also an injustice to the opener who had to deal with the pressure of Fahad's non-performance. The Harris kid should've been batting higher up the order as well.

This Pakistan u19 team isn't talentless but they had no game plan whatsoever.

This is damning. He is from Lahore so could be anyone really.

Now watch him get fast-tracked into the senior team.

lost us that semi-final, hands down...

going at RPO of 5+ one wicket down only, Haider Ali stroking it beautifuly and in comes Fahad and kills the whole momentum ... innings didnt get on track after that...

his bowling was good but then no idea how good he would be

Well he's been named in the Pakistan Under19 squad for the tour of Bangladesh.

Wasn't this the guy who single handedly destroyed all our momentum against IND U19 in the semi's. Why is he even being selected?

Wishing all the boys good luck for the future. Here’s hoping to past not defining the players’ future.

Today i was dicsussing about fahad munirs selection with a guy who is 23 and he told me that fahad is the same age as him.Plus,i dont think he has even played the u 19 domestic tournament last year so is he in the team based on his performances in 2020 u 19 wc?

Sounds about right. I bet 75% of the U19s are 3 years older.

Our u16 captain umar eman mention in an interview before some tour that he is in 2nd year of fsc.One guy that i personally know is in A2 but recently played the u19.The only player that i can say hasnt fudged is muneeb wasif who is doing his A1 from Aitchison college

A huge problem that isn't going away.

Poor by PCB,they are complicit in this damaging practice. Although background checks won't eliminate this practice they could make a big difference in eliminating the worst excesses.

That's is a surprise , in my younger days I also appeared and played in under 16 and under 19 district teams and the cricketers who had passed Matric exams were not able to do the age fudging as they required to submit the copy of Matric certificate with date of birth on it , as per school record. Date of birth in school record was less likely to be wrong.

One of the worst cricketer I have seen

Heavy parchi.. Pakistan cricket is truly doomed

How? This really isn't that possible to do.

Why not? Most of these guys go to school, is that hard to find their real ages. If the players didnt go to school, then the onus is on them to prove their ages, a NADRA isnt on its own sufficient. If it cant proved then they dont play U19 and get treated as adults

I don't understand the terminology being used here. What does FSC, A1, A2 mean?

FSC is grade 11-12.And children who are in 2nd year of fsc are usually 18 years old but umar emaan was playing claiming to be 15 years old

There are always one or two such picks in every squad at every level for Pakistan.
