Zaman Khan chats with Saj about his experience of playing for Derbyshire in the T20 Blast, the challenge of bowling to the likes of Jos Buttler, advice from Mickey Arthur, his unorthodox bowling action, his PSL journey with Lahore Qalandars, his ambition to play in this year's World Cup, his desire to be a good ambassador for Pakistan cricket and more.

The humility on display is so amazing - Just hope the best for for Zaman and hope he can add some more kms to his speed.

Hindsight... had this guy been the 4th pacer in the WT20, instead Pak played an extra bat, who failed as expected.

Zaman Khan regarding his action

"Some coaches have told me that my bowling action will lead to injuries and that I need to have a really strong back and things to sustain this action. However, Aaqib Javed my coach at Lahore Qalandars bring your arm even lower as it’s really difficult for batters to read the ball especially slower balls and yorkers. I enjoy bowling with this action and confusing the opposition batters."

High hopes for this guy in white ball cricket

Met him for the first time recently.

A humble, respectful young man who you can clearly see has been brought up well.

A few others could learn from him regarding manners.

He has a bright future ahead of him if he keeps improving and learning at the rate he has been doing so far in his career.

Making progress by leaps and bounds at the Vitality Blast:

"Zaman Khan has done well with the white-ball but he lacks experience in 50 over games but he does have the potential as we have seen in T20 games where he has performed well; So, he will become a good asset for Pakistan if he plays FC games"

On the contrary - Aqib Javed rates Zaman Khan very highly

"In white-ball, I still believe Zaman Khan's skills are above all. We have recently seen him in the Canada league, no bowler is near to him when it comes to bowling in death overs"

"I rate him more than even Naseem. Your first three choices in white-ball cricket must be Shaheen, Haris, and Zaman. I am not saying this because the trio belongs to Lahore Qalandars. You can then go chose Naseem"

Disagree. Naseem has a much higher ceiling than Zaman in terms of skill level.

Remains to be seen how well Zaman does in 50-over cricket, as he relies more on batters going after him to take wickets.

These coaches should avoid comparing Pakistani players with each other. Let the selection committee do that as it is their job, there's no need for a third party to create unnecessary conflicts.

We need thus guy to keep developing. Too many of our players become complacent when they get a place in the team

Zaman Khan practicing during the Manchester Originals vs Northern Superchargers match

Bangladesh Premier League, Comilla Victorians have signed Zaman Khan for the highly anticipated 2024 edition of the tournament. He got attention of cricket world after excellent final over against SriLanka in Asia cup 2023

Zaman Khan granted NOC for Big Bash League 2023-24.

Zaman has been granted NOC for four matches. All these games are set to take place from 7 to 28 December.

Any reason why he was granted 4 and the others 5?

So far he looks a one-dimensional slinger. Needs to develop more skills outside the death overs where he looks most useful.

Zaman Khan took 3 wickets today while conceding just 23 runs in 4 overs against Lahore Whites in the National T20 Cup 2023 for his team Rawalpindi.

Fantastic slinging action player for Pakistan. I want to see him in the Pakistan T20 side more.

‘A bit of a Lasith Malinga’: Pakistan quick Zaman Khan poised for Big Bash League debut

He may not be a household name just yet, but Pakistani quick Zaman Khan looms as the Sydney Thunder’s most dangerous X-factor ahead of this season’s Big Bash League.

The 22-year-old, described by former Pakistan bowler Aaqib Javed as “one of the best death ball bowlers in the world”, has represented Pakistan in six T20s and an ODI since making his international debut earlier this year. Despite predominantly bowling in the Powerplay and at the death, he has conceded just 6.66 runs per over across his brief T20I career.

However, Zaman has enhanced his reputation by dominating domestic T20 leagues over the last 18 months, winning back-to-back Pakistan Super League titles with the Lahore Qalanders and representing the Jaffna Kings during last year’s triumphant Lankan Premier League campaign.

He was the fourth-leading wicket-taker of this year’s T20 Blast in England, taking 25 scalps at 16.55 in 14 matches for the Derbyshire Falcons, also making cameos with the Manchester Originals in The Hundred and the Toronto Nationals in the Canada GT20.

Zaman, who has been clocked at over 145km/h, boasts an irresistible T20 resume and one of the most destructive toe-crushing yorkers in world cricket. The right-armer’s unique slinging action, which mimics Sri Lankan legend Lasith Malinga, means the ball is delivered in line with the stumps at a lower trajectory than other bowlers.

“He’s a bit different. He’s a bit more of a slingy sort of bowler, a bit of a Lasith Malinga,” Thunder batter Jason Sangha explained to Fox Cricket.

“He’s the full package at the moment. He’s played domestic tournaments and international cricket, so ticks both boxes.”

The Thunder snapped up Zaman with their No. 13 pick during September’s BBL Draft for $300,000, bolstering the squad’s bowling attack ahead of the 13th edition of the tournament.

“Looking at our squad, we’ve obviously got a lot of new-ball options, guys like Gurinder Sandhu, Nathan McAndrew, Liam Hatcher; we needed someone to bowl some death overs,” Sangha continued.

“Death overs are so key. Daniel Sams has had that role for a long time, and to have someone like Zaman Khan, who could probably take the pressure off him, because T20 cricket is a game where someone is always going to get hurt sometimes, and it’s always nice to have another option.”

Sams, who claimed his 100th Big Bash wicket last summer, is excited by the prospect of bowling alongside one of Pakistan’s brightest talents.

“I played against him in The Hundred … I faced him at the death, and he was difficult to hit,” Sams told Fox Cricket.

“Having his experience and his skill at the end will make it a little bit easier for me, because they know it’s going to be hard to go from both ends.

“Potentially they might try and target me a bit more if they’re struggling to get him.”

At this stage, the Thunder only has access to Zaman for their first four group-stage matches because the Pakistan Cricket Board granted him a No-Objection Certificate (NOC) until December 28; he is expected to feature in Pakistan’s upcoming T20 series against New Zealand, which commences on January 12.

The Thunder’s BBL season gets underway in Canberra this Tuesday, facing the Brisbane Heat at Manuka Oval from 7.15pm AEDT.

Zaman Khan claims one wicket for his side Sydney Thunder against Adelaide Strikers in a match today in BBL season13 . His final bowling figure was (1/43) in 3.4 overs

Love the guy. Came from poverty and now he is playing with the worlds best.

I hope he is able to succeed with the Pakistan team.

Do u think he can succeed in red ball?
No man i doubt it. He is one dimensional, and to succeed in international cricket he needs to develop more varieties in his bowling.
He bowls the yorkers well, but what if he is required to ball a bit behind, and what if the dew factor makes the ball wet and he cant grip it for a yorker and bowls a full toss?

I he can somehow develop that, it will be great.

I think he can make out a career as a freelance cricketer in the franchise leagues are earn good money. He can probably earn more through that route. He is a great death bowler in t20.

But in international, he will need to develop further.

But i hope he does do well and earns his salary. He comes from a very poor background and I really respect what this guy has done till now. A very good guy

Zaman is not a test-level bowler. He is 1 dimensional and he can succeed in white ball format for sure but red ball format takes a lot to be successful there. His performance speaks for him and he got his well deserved pot in the team for the New Zealand tour.

Good T20 bowler like the other T20 mercenaries that have come out of Pakistan in recent years. Forget Test Cricket, like Haris Rauf, this guy doesn’t have the mental endurance for ODIs. He’s good for 4-over matches.

This is an issue for us - we get so happy because someone made it through poverty that we forget it's the skills that matter!

true.

I really hope he improves and makes it big in international cricket.

But I have biasness for him and naseem.

I hope Zaman is able to build a house and earn enough money to keep his parents in a proper home as he came from a house that was literally a mud house.

I also feel bad for Naseem whose only supporter was his mother and she passed away before she could watch him bowl.

The good thing about todays world is that, if these cricketers dont make it to international, they atleast have leagues to fall back to and earn an income.

Do u think he can succeed in red ball?
he is not a red ball bowler due to his slingy arm action because he wont get the extra bounce which is the basic need in test cricket for a bowler.

he is not even a good ODI bowler though so let him play T20 cricket where he is doing well.

Zaman Khan is in action for Sydney Thunder against Haris Rauf and Usama Mir's Melbourne Stars. As of yet, he has just bowled 1 over and gave away 7 runs.

Zaman Khan ended his spell of 4 overs for 24 runs and took 3 wickets. These are some wonderful numbers for the Pakistan pacer.

That's fine

So let him win a tournament for us - job done.

Zaman Khan was the man of the match for his wonderful spell of 3/24 against Melbourne Stars. What a game he has had. Looks in good touch.

I am really excited for Zaman Khan to start playing for Pakistan especially in T20's.

Was a bit disappointed he didn't play in the ODI WC but understandable given his lack of experience and one dimensional bowling but he's deserves a chance.

Malinga built his game around his slower balls and yorkers. Can't see why Zaman Khan can't do the same.

Thats the rhyme in Pakistan domestic cricket, focus on t20 standard bowling to earn $$$, nobody has aspiration to play Test cricket. Hence no fast bowler no spinner in country worthy of being world class in Test cricket

Agreed. And in a poor country like Pakistan, who can blame them?

Our ex-legends would have gone the same route had it been available in the 80’s and 90’s.

Our most exciting bowling talents are Ihsanullah and Zaman Khan and neither of them will ever play test cricket.

Ihsanullah might be able to play the longest format but I don't think that zaman can do that. He is a bit of a 1-dimensional bowler but hopefully he can play some red ball format in Pakistan, then we will know what he can do in the longer format. As of yet, he is more focused on T20s only.

He has been doing very good job as a T20 bowler but for the longer formats, he needs to add more variety into his bowling.

He is perfect for t20 and should only be a t20 specialist, can do well for Pak and he can bat a bit too as well

With Rauf and Shaheen struggling, it would be worth giving Zaman a role similar to Umar Gul in T20, giving him the ball in the second half of the innings.

Bowled just 1 over out of 14 overs till now and went for 9 overs. Might be back to complete his quota now as just 6 overs remaining.

Zaman was a bit unlucky, could have a wicket in his very first overs but it was dropped at short third man.

Zaman got a wicket in his third over including another catch dropped 2 balls later.

Zaman has finished the innings of Brisbane Heat for 172 as he got his 2nd wicket of the match with match figures of 3.4 overs, 33 runs and 2 wickets. Again he was brilliant in his Last encounter in this year's BBL.

Of course he should play. We need to start winning some games, so play him.

As a T20 specialist I would pick him in the first place for T20 cricket instead of Usama Mir.

Zaman Khan has been named in the playing 11 for the 3rd T20 match against New Zealand replacing Aamer Jamal. Good to soo him in the playing 11 as he can bowl well at the death overs and has the ability to bowl yorkers at will. Good luck

I'm excited to see him don the Pak jersey again tomorrow. I'm sure curious to see at what stage he bowls because we have 4 death over specalists playing tomorrow. Personally, I think he should bowl 2 at around over #10 and then 2 at the very end. I hope they don't make him open the bowling.

Interesting to see where Zaman Khan will bowl with Haris Rauf also in the team as a death over specialist.

Zaman Khan opens his wicket account in HBL PSL 9 by claiming the prized scalp of Colin Munro. So far his bowling figures are 1/21 in 2 overs.

A good PSL 9 continues for Zaman Khan as he dismisses David Malan with a LBW delivery. So far 1/7 in 1 over against Multan Sultans.

Fantastic bowler - should be highly considered for the world cup in the US.

Even LQ company has turned Zaman Khan into Haris Rauf 😂. He ended expensively today against MS with a figure of 0/43 in four overs.

He had the novelty factor going for him in 2021.

Teams have now got used to him and he is too predictable with his bowling now.

Zaman Khan gets the prized scalp of Salman Ali Agha while playing against IU. Can he keep the pressure on and help LQ claim their first win today?

Zaman Khan has been dropped for the 5th T20I against New Zealand, with Shaheen Shah Afridi replacing him.

Zaman Khan goes unsold

Zaman Khan, the slinger from Pakistan, comes in at US$ 50,000. Unsold in LPL auction 2024.
