"You've got to be kidding me, Glenn Phillips!"

The gun New Zealand fielder will be hard to beat for the catch of the tournament after taking an absolute screamer in the Super 12 opener against Australia.

Marcus Stoinis skied a cover drive into the outfield that looked set to fall safely until Phillips defied gravity as he flew forward and somehow got two hands to the ball to seal a spectacular catch.

“This will compete with catch of the tournament!”

Liam Livingstone sparked England early in their first T20 World Cup 2022 match with a clever catch deep in the outfield to dismiss Hazrat Zazai.

The Afghanistan opener sliced a cut shot high enough to give Livingstone time to make up ground and have half a chance of getting hands under the ball as it was about to hit the deck.

“What a catch that is!”

It ended up being a night to forget for Pakistan but not before Babar Azam grabbed a razor-sharp chance to dismiss Regis Chakabva first ball.

The Pakistan skipper only moved to first slip after Shadab Khan bowled Sean Williams, then had to be switched on straight away when Chakabva got a thick outside edge.

Babar Azam dived hard to his right and somehow got a hand to the ball, a big grin growing across his face as he looked up at the Pakistan spinner now on a hat-trick.

“Buttler has a brilliant catch down the legside!”

A flick of the glove from Mohammad Nabi off the express bowling of Mark Wood looked to be more than enough to send the ball racing past the keeper and into the boundary.

But England skipper Jos Buttler flew through the air and stuck out his left mit to pull down a one-handed blinder.

“What a grab from Quinton de Kock!”

The South Africa keeper has starred with the bat at the T20 World Cup 2022 but firstly called on the best of his reflexes to take a stunning one-hander to dismiss Sikandar Raza.

A slight nick from the Zimbabwe dangerman sent the ball flying so high and fast that Quinton de Kock could only reach up with one glove to claim a cracker.

Bonus blinder from England

England took 10 catches for their 10 wickets against Afghanistan while included some absolute crackers.

Adil Rashid took arguably the toughest of the lot when running back with the flight of the ball and judging it perfectly to dismiss Najibullah Zadran.

Top catches from the First Round

The First Round of the T20 World Cup 2022 was also filled with fantastic fielding, with Sri Lanka keeper Kusal Mendis, UAE’s Basil Hameed and an Ireland double-teamer some that set the highest of standards right from the start.

The fielding factor: Who has made the biggest impact at the T20 World Cup?

With a brand new algorithm used during this T20 World Cup, we’ve crunched the numbers to determine the most impactful fielder.
For so long almost neglected, the fielding factor, especially in the shortest format, has now become a point of difference.

From diving catches to direct hits, finding an objective metric to compare fielders has been challenging, having never settled to accept a way to compare the game’s greats like we do with bat and ball.

At the T20 World Cup this year however, the wheels are in motion with the ICC working with Official Data Partner Sportradar to develop new Fielding Impact Ratings. Every catch and run out attempt has been rated, while assessing how many runs have been saved in the field, and judging how much pressure a fielder can place on batters in the heat of action.

Ahead of Sunday’s final, we unveil which fielders have had the greatest impact on this tournament.

How are fielders assessed?

Fielders are awarded points for their actions in the field, from taking catches and affecting run outs, to applying pressure, runs stopped and tangible moments of forced pressure on the batting pair.

Players begin with a net score of zero before every match, and can finish with either a negative or positive figure reflecting their impact in the field.

Scores from the weighted algorithm are added up across matches, giving players an overall score for their impact, with extra weighting on key fielding moments, in crucial points of a match.

Impact is a key word in this assessment, with the score not necessarily determining the best fielder in absolute terms, but rather deducing who causes the most effect on proceedings.

A good example for instance would be Roelof van der Merwe’s catch in the Netherlands’ win over South Africa in Adelaide.

As explained below, van der Merwe’s catch meets a lot of high-end criteria for big impact.

First, it was a difficult catch running back from the inner circle at speed, taking the ball sprawled out as it dipped over his shoulder at speed.

Second, it was taken to dismiss an excellent player: David Miller.

Third, it came at a crucial juncture of the game - the 16th over South Africa’s chase, breaking a set partnership of Miller and Heinrich Klaasen and stifling South Africa’s chase and ultimately their tournament hopes. South Africa needed 47 from the final 28 balls and now five wickets down. The Proteas would go on to lose another wicket two balls later, falling to their 13-run defeat.

So who makes the biggest impact?

We ran our fielding impact algorithm over the Super 12 phase to find which players have had the biggest impact on the outcomes of matches.

A constant danger in the field, it’s no surprise Glenn Maxwell tops the list, with 44.52 points from four matches Maxwell claimed a pair of catches and a pair of run outs in his campaign, plus consistently applying pressure and throwing accurately.

Liam Livingstone runs in second on a score of 37.88, with van der Merwe’s catch among other highlights placing him third on 31.83. Glenn Phillips (30.78) and KL Rahul round out the top five, with Shakib Al Hasan, Suryakumar Yadav, Ben Stokes, David Warner and Kane Williamson the rest of the top ten.

It’s also worth noting that even before the semi-final, Pakistan’s strong team performance was reflective in the numbers. Five of their players stand in the top 30 players, with Babar Azam (22.33) leading from the front.

A constant danger in the field, and part of the tournament-winning team, it’s no surprise that Liam Livingstone tops the list, with 44.52 points from six matches. Livingstone claimed six catches on top of his relentless pressure in the field.

Glenn Maxwell ran second with 44.32 points (through only four matches), with Glenn Phillips in third on 36.96 points. Shadab Khan's all-round work put him fourth on 33.74 points, with van der Merwe's catch helping him finish in fifth on 31.83. Sam Curran, KL Rahul, Shakib Al Hasan, Mohammad Nawaz and Ben Stokes round out the top ten.

It’s also worth noting that Pakistan’s strong team performance was reflective in the numbers. Six of their players stand in the top 30 players, with captain Babar Azam (24.33) the next best of the group.
