Josh Tongue was parachuted into the England team for the first Test of the summer against Ireland.

England’s head coach, Brendon McCullum, described Tongue as “a big strong lad” who “bowls quite fast and has some real skills” after watching him in action during the team’s first training session of the summer on Monday. After their second, McCullum broke the news to Tongue that he would play against Ireland.

“I bowled at some of the lads on Monday,” Tongue said. “I felt like I bowled nicely and obviously I was going in with no expectations to be playing at all, and just bowling at high-class players in the nets was good for me. I must have bowled fairly well to get selected.

“Baz came up to me just before training finished [on Tuesday] and gave me the good news. It’s an amazing feeling, a dream come true really.”

Tongue has his own experience with serious injury having spent 15 months with thoracic outlet syndrome, the compression of nerves in the shoulder, during which he considered retiring from the game altogether. “I’m just proud of myself and how I held in there,” he said.

“I was very close to retiring – I’d had two operations, seen a lot of specialists and I was in a really dark place. I don’t think there’s that many bowlers who have been in the same situation as me. Obviously nearly retiring, then getting called up to the Lions in Sri Lanka in the winter and now the Test squad, I’m just proud of myself. Knowing I stuck in there, and it’s come good.”

Tongue, who has been associated with Worcestershire since he was six years old – he becomes the county’s first England debutant since Moeen Ali in 2014 – insisted he was not yet allowing himself to dream of being involved in the Ashes. “I’m the sort of person to stay in the present,” he said. “I try not to think too much ahead of myself, and whatever game I play in I just try and do as much as I can for the team to win a game of cricket. Those things will come, hopefully.”

3 wickets in the Ireland second innings.

Not the strongest opposition, but looks ok.

Decent pace also.

Tongue was contemplating retirement amid spending 15 months on the sidelines with a shoulder injury between 2021 and 2022 but is now on the Lord’s honours board. What a turnaround.

5fer on debut!

What a moment for Tongue

That little bit of nip will do Josh Tongue a lot of good. England have plenty of 80MPH seamers, but not too many who can fill in for Mark Wood and be used to get extra bounce at pace. Josh now suddenly finds himself potentially in the position for Ashes selection. What a career comeback.

Could he be the x-factor England need for The Ashes?

England keep producing good pace-bowlers.

So many to choose from and even when Broad and Anderson retire, they'll have plenty of options.

Battery of bang average seamers Eng is producing. Potts and now Tongue.

These guys aren't half as good as Chris Woakes, forget replacing Broad and Anderson

He was good but is yet to be tested against a good side.

Good prospect definitely.

Included in the XI for the 2nd Ashes Test - will he be the x-factor for England?

Josh Tongue is out to keep Steve Smith quiet for the second time this summer and deliver at a rapid rate for Ben Stokes.

Fast bowler Tongue has been given a licence to thrill with an Ashes debut at Lord’s, just weeks after his first and only Test so far against Ireland on the same ground. And after consistently topping 90 mph the aim is for him to create the same sort of mayhem that occurred four years ago, the last time Smith played a Test here.

It was a different bowler who caused the problems though when Jofra Archer sent a crackle of electricity through the crowd with his searing pace and hostile bowling. It was enough to pin Smith to the floor after being hit by a fierce bouncer, and Australia required Marnus Labuschagne to step in as a concussion sub.

Tongue might not operate at quite that extreme level of pace, but he was quick enough to trap Smith lbw for Worcestershire when Sussex played at New Road.

Jonny Bairstow branded "overweight" by BBC cricket commentator as Ashes battle heats up

“Obviously it would be great to get Steve Smith out again,” said Tongue. “I was pretty happy the first time so if I can do it on a second occasion that would be good for the team as well and hopefully that will happen.

“Coming into the side now for the next Test I feel like I can add a bit more pace and bounce to the attack and hopefully I can get a few wickets for the team as well.

“I knew the step up from county cricket to international cricket would be a big one, and playing here at Lord’s was a very special moment for myself having never played here before.

“To then get five wickets against Ireland on my debut was an incredible feeling and should give me confidence ahead of another chance against Australia.

“I’ve dreamt as a young kid growing up about playing in an Ashes series so to get the nod now is that dream come true. Whatever Stokesy asks me to do for the team I’m here to do it as best I can.”

He has been preparing with a red ball out in the middle alongside the Test strip which, with its green hue, has got him wondering what he might be able to do with it.

Tongue has kept himself ticking over since that game against Ireland with a trio of T20 Blast games for Worcestershire, but an Ashes Test is a whole other ball game.

The 25-year-old got a small taste of what to expect in the oldest clash of all when he was sat in the dressing room at Edgbaston for the first two days before leaving to play for his county.

“That first ball that Zak hit to the boundary, the noise was just unbelievable,” he added. “I’d never heard anything like it and just being in the dressing room for the start of the game was a great environment.

“I’m just looking forward to getting going and trying to do what I can to help the team. There was a bit of pace in the wicket against Ireland so more of that would be nice.

“There is a green tinge to the pitch at the moment too which would benefit our seamers. And if there is a bit of nip and movement in the air then I think we can make the most of it.”

2 overs for 16 runs - not impressed but early days for him - could improve.

What a maiden wicket for Tongue, that of Usman Khawaja

A rare bright spark for England today.

Gives some hope for the future.

Josh Tongue provides something different. Sorry to say but both Broad and Ollie look pedestrian.

England need to move on from this “oh look how long broad and anderson can play” and get some young blood in.

Getting very stale

Gets Warner, Khawaja and Smith in his debut Ashes innings, not a bad effort at all.

Love his attitude - smile on the face and bowls quick

'Tongue offers something different'

Sky Sports Cricket’s Eoin Morgan on Josh Tongue:

“He creates opportunities and offers something different, which is what you want as a captain and a coach. He has that extra pace and has found a new role from around the wicket.”

Good option for England this lad.

Like what I have seen of him so far.

He will only get better.

Quite impressive. Will be a handful in Australia and SA too. Him and Wood need to play for England to have a chance. Robinson is bowling 78mph pies.

Josh Tongue: England fast bowler suffers pectoral injury setback ahead of summer Tests

England fast bowler Josh Tongue has suffered a setback with a pectoral injury and could miss a chunk of the summer.

The 26-year-old made his Test debut last summer but has been out of action since August, missing England's white-ball tour of the Caribbean and Test series in India.

England are taking on West Indies and Sri Lanka this July, August and September, live on Sky Sports.

An ECB spokesperson said: "Josh (Tongue) has had a setback to his original injury (pectoral injury). There is no timescale on when he'll return to action."

Tongue's injury blow comes as England plan for life after Jimmy Anderson, who announced his retirement earlier in May.

The Nottinghamshire seamer made his England debut against Ireland in 2023 and took 10 wickets in two matches.

What pacers likely to be available for Test series ?
