All set for all-Sindh National U19 Championship final

Lahore, 24 August 2022:

This year’s best two teams of teenage cricketers will be in action at the UBL Sports Complex, Karachi from 25 August as Sindh Blues face Sindh Whites in the final of the National U19 Championship 2022-23.

Along with the bragging rights of being the red-ball champions, the final provides both sides a shot at the winning prize money of PKR1.5million. The team that ends up second will bag PKR750,000. The player of the final and the best performers of the tournament (player of the tournament, best batter, best bowler and best fielder) will win PKR25,000 and PKR50,000 each.

The tournament, one of the several Pakistan Cricket Board’s initiatives to unearth the #PakistanFutureStars, began on 30 July with 12 teams divided into two groups. In a bid to increase the talent pool at the age-group level, each of the six Cricket Associations fielded two teams under the names of Blues and Whites. The Blues formed Group A and the Whites featured in Group B.

With two wins in five matches, Sindh Blues, with most wins in their pool, topped the chart. Sindh Whites, also with two wins and the most in their set, topped Pool B.

The final will be a four-day affair. In case the match ends in a draw, the team with the first innings lead will be declared winners. If the weather or ground conditions do not allow a single ball to be bowled, then both teams will be declared joint winners.

Sindh Blues’ Habibullah has had a terrific run with the bat scoring 294 at an average of 73.50 . The right-handed batter has smashed a century and a half-century and his side will be relying heavily on him to continue his impressive batting display in the last four days of this year’s National U19 Championship.

Sindh Whites’ Haseeb-ur-Rehman has had a phenomenal run with the ball, taking 32 wickets in just three matches. The right-arm off-break has recorded three five-fors and his best bowling figures have been an exceptional nine for 79. The second best wicket-taker of the tournament, Abdul Basit of Northern Whites, has 20 wickets in four matches, which underscores Haseeb’s utility for his side.

Haseeb’s teammate, Ghulam Ashraf will be aiming to end the tournament with the most dismissals to his name. He currently has 11 dismissals (eight catches and three stumpings) in five matches and follows Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Whites’ Zubair Shinwari, who leads the chart with 12 dismissals (10 catches and two stumpings).

U19 Championship: Sindh Blues close in on victory as Sindh Whites lose five in 506-run chase

Karachi, 27 August 2022: Sindh Blues moved one step closer to victory in the National U19 Championship final against Sindh Whites after a dominant display on the third day at the UBL Sports Complex in Karachi.

Sindh Whites finished the day’s play struggling at 164-5 in pursuit of the improbable 506-run target with Shahwaiz Yasir and Syed Tayyab Hussain unbeaten on 50 and 22 respectively. The duo came to the crease when their team had lost half of their side on 107 runs as they stitched an unbroken 57-run stand to take them to stumps.

Sindh Whites still seem to be staring at an imminent defeat following the failure of their top-order to build significant partnerships. Opening batter Ali Ishaq was dismissed for 20 in the fifth over of the innings by Aftab Ibrahim before Afnan Khan got the better of his batting partner Hamza Qureshi for 11.

Noman Ali perished soon for the paltry score of five while Yahya Shah spent 54 balls in the middle for his 35 as he out stumped off the bowling of Ziaullah. Afnan then returned to pick up his second wicket of the innings by getting rid of Sindh Whites skipper Hassan Iqbal (15).

Earlier in the day, Wahaj Riaz starred with a stellar century to go with his 72 in the first innings to help Sindh Blues set a mammoth target.

Wahaj made 116 with 10 fours and a solitary six and forged a 107-run partnership for the fourth wicket with Arbaz Khan, who scored 57 with seven boundaries and one six.

After Arbaz fell off Haseeb-ur-Rehman, Wahaj batted well with the tail to take Sindh Blues’ score from 170-4 to 275-8. He then became the ninth batter to be out whereas the final pair added only three runs to the total and Sindh Blues were all out for 278, stretching their lead to 505 runs.

Sindh Whites spinner Haseeb was once again among the wickets as he returned figures of 4-107, fortifying his position as the leading wicket-taker in the tournament. Left-arm spinner Tayyab chipped in with three wickets for 69 runs.

The buoyant Sindh Blues will resume their victory push on Sunday in hopes of sealing the contest quickly while Sindh Whites require a massive 342 runs for a miraculous win on the final day.

Scores in brief:

Sindh Blues 363-9d, 81.2 overs (Habibullah 130, Wahaj Riaz 72, Saad Baig 36, Aftab Ibrahim 29, Haroon Arshad 24, Afnan Khan 22, Ali Hasan 21; Syed Tayyab Hussain 5-85, Daniyal Ahmed 2-40, Haseeb-ur-Rehman 2-147) and 278 all out, 70 overs (Wahaj Riaz 116, Arbaz Khan 57, Saad Baig 29, Habibullah 24; Haseeb-ur-Rehman 4-107, Syed Tayyab Hussain 3-69, Fahad Amin 2-48)

Sindh Whites 136 all out, 60.1 overs (Ali Ishaq 26, Daniyal Ahmed 26, Noman Ali 23; Afnan Khan 3-21, Naveed Ahmed Khan 3-22, Aftab Ibrahim 2-45) and 164-5, 52 overs (Shahwaiz Yasir 50 not out, Syed Yahya Shah 35, Syed Tayyab Hussain 22 not out; Afnan Khan 2-23)

Sindh Blues are the winners of the National U19 Championship. They thrashed Sindh Whites by a mammoth 288 runs in the final, played at the UBL Sports Complex, Karachi, and now have the bragging rights of being the red-ball U19 champions for the 2022-23 season and have also pocketed PKR1.5million.

Blues completed the win on the fourth and final day of the match as they dismissed Whites’ last five batters in just 53 runs. Whites were bowled out the latter for mere 217 in their pursuit of 506.

Shahwaiz Yasir, who was unbeaten on 50, could add only one run to his score, before Naveed Ahmed Khan sent him back to the pavilion. Naveed was one of the two bowlers – the other being Afnan Khan – in the innings to pick three wickets. Aftab Ibrahim and Ziaullah dismissed two batters each.

Syed Tayyab Hussain, not out on 22 when the play resumed on Sunday, was the only Whites player to show resistance with a half-century before he was stumped off Ziaullah. Tayyab hit five fours in his 151-ball 53.

That Blues were able to set such a huge total for Whites was because of brilliant bowling performances from their bowlers and captain Wahaj Riaz’s sound batsmanship. Wahaj made 72 and 116 in the match and his second innings century rescued Blues from a batting collapse.

Wahaj was declared player of the final.

His teammate Afnan Khan, with 228 runs and 22 wickets, was named player of the tournament, while the award was best batter also went to Blues as Habibullah, the centurion in the final of the first innings, was awarded the trophy for scoring 448 runs.

Sindh Whites’ Haseeb-Ur-Rehman (38 wickets) and Ghulam Ashraf bagged best bowler and best wicketkeeper trophy.
