Shane Watson confirms Karachi visit for HBL PSL 2019

Karachi, 6 March 2019:

The HBL Pakistan Super League 2019 received a welcome news on Wednesday when World Cup winner Shane Watson of Quetta Gladiators confirmed he will travel to Karachi to feature in his side’s upcoming matches in the HBL Pakistan Super League 2019.

Watson had initially agreed to play matches in the United Arab Emirates, but changed his plans following discussions with his family and after being convinced by his franchise team-mates and owner.

Watson won the ICC Champions Trophy 2006 and 2009, and the ICC Cricket World Cup 2007 and 2015 with Australia before retiring in 2016. One of the most sought after players in T20 leagues, Watson is presently the leading HBL Pakistan Super League 2019 run-scorer with 332 runs at an average of just under 47.5 with a strike-rate of over 141.

Shane Watson: “I am very excited as it has been 14 years since I was in Pakistan last.

“It has been a tough decision, more so from my family’s point of view and it all comes down to the support that my wife and my family has given me. It has worked out nicely and also the support that the Quetta Gladiators family has given me.

“It was always going to be difficult to leave before the final. I am very excited, we have got a great squad, a great team this year and I would love to be involved with Quetta Gladiators taking that final step. So, I can’t wait to get over to Karachi.

“I am sure that everyone will turn out in their droves to support, not just the Quetta Gladiators but also the PSL. It’s a great tournament and I can’t wait to get there.

“Pakistan, mein aa raha hoon!”

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Managing Director Wasim Khan: “The PCB welcomes Shane Watson’s decision to visit Karachi for the crucial stage matches of the HBL PSL 2019.

“While Quetta Gladiators will benefit from his rich experience and excellent form, Shane’s appearance in Karachi sends out a clear message that above all else, players are united in supporting Pakistan in restoring cricket back to where it belongs, in Pakistan.

“The game is all about engaging with the passionate Pakistan fans and making it an incredible experience. I am confident that with all the sides featuring full strength sides, the crowds will turn up in strong numbers and play their part in making this a success both for the country and the players.”

Quetta Gladiators have already qualified for the play-offs, but will take on Karachi Kings in their final league match on 10 March.

He will be paid hugely no doubt but for an Australian to come Pakistan is definite good news.

Will hold onto that thought until international cricket is back in Pakistan.

Yes Watson as an individual doesnt make a difference but him agreeing after 3 years show that general perception is improving which definitely is a good sign moreover, this time every foreign player from each of the PSL franchises is coming and it wont be long till PCB will be organizing full PSL and international matches in Pakistan considering the current momentum and flow of things.

Every other sporting and international events have already started happening two, three years ago.

It has returned in parts, a World XI featuring some of the best T20 cricketers at that point in time came down.

It will take a while but we will start having ODI/T20 series'...as long as this particular visit goes well and India does not intervene Inshallah.

The times (as Dylan said) are a changin'

I guess we might have a complete edition in Pakistain in 2020?

For what he visted the last time (14 years ago)?
If i remember correctly Australia last visted pakistan in 1998

It would have been a shame if he still refused to tour Pakistan, he had no more justifiable excuses anymore.

The Australian A team toured Pakistan in 2005, he might have been in the squad back then. Jason Gillespie was

Huge Australian name in Pakistan. The start of something big hopefully!

With his visit which I am sure he is gonna enjoy, his words will go into the ears of other Aussie cricketers as well which can develop into something big in near future.

Nice, very nice, thanks Shane. This will be very important step towards bringing cricket back to Pakistan. Aussies has not been agreed to come to Pakistan , this would be an ice breaker.

Great news for Pakistan and PSL. It will an experience that Watto will hopefully enjoy. Its great to see an Australian coming to Pakistan.

The last time Shane Watson played in Pakistan was in Lahore in 2005 for Aus A versus Pakistan A. The Pak A team of 12 players was:

Salman Butt Ashar Zaidi Imran Farhat Bazid Khan Hasan Raza Faisal Iqbal Y Arafat Z Haider Tahir Khan Umar Gul Mohammad Asif Mohammad Sami.

I think Ben Cutting, Bailey and Tim Paine visited Pakistan in 2017.

Got to fancy Quetta to win the PSL this time round with Watson confirming he will be in Pakistan.

Thanks to Watson, we quickly recovered from the damage caused by AB de Villiers ( shame on him ) .

A twitter source said that earlier he was demanding 3 lac rupees for coming to Pakistan. But backtracked his request.

Shane watson, Thank you very much, this is so big of you to come when other major superstars have said no.

Watson is on the executive of the Australian Cricketers Association so he is a player of significant influence within the country.

Lovely moment for QG to see Shane Watson land on Pakistani soil.

Three years on from his international retirement, the former Australia all-rounder Shane Watson is still a force to be reckoned with in Twenty20 leagues.

Watson, who was Player of the Match in the final, as Chennai Super Kings won the title in Indian Premier League 2018, comes into the 2019 edition fresh off winning the Player of the Tournament award at the Pakistan Super League.

The former Australia all-rounder scored 430 runs in 12 games for title-winners Quetta Gladiators in UAE and Pakistan, with four half-centuries, averaging 43 and striking the ball at 143.81. The 37-year-old took a special liking to Peshawar Zalmi, against whom he hit a 43-ball 71 in the Qualifier and a 55-ball 91 in a league game.

Quetta won both games, and the final against the same side, and it prompted Peshawar captain Daren Sammy to quip: "Shane Watson has been a pain for us!

"He is pretty experienced and he is enjoying his form. Quetta have had the better of us this season ... But that Shane Watson guy has been a pain for me."

Quetta captain Sarfaraz Ahmed was effusive in his praise for his star player. "Watson has performed consistently for us throughout the tournament," he said. "He is a big player who can win matches single-handedly.

"If you look at the knocks he has played for Australia or any other league anywhere in the world, you'll realise that when he gets set, he goes on to win games for his team. The opposition is wary of him."

Before the PSL, Watson turned out for Sydney Thunder in the 2018-19 Big Bash League, and scored 344 runs, finishing as the second-highest scorer for his team.

That included a century, the first of the tournament last season, which came off 62 balls.

"To be able to play in some of these tournaments around the world, it's so much fun," he had said back then. "Also, I've experienced life outside of cricket. Cricket is what I know better than everything. While I can really contribute on the field from a skills point of view as a senior player and I'm still loving it, my mind's open to continue to play."

In the IPL last season, Watson's tally of 555 runs from 15 matches was his highest in the league, bettering his maiden season, with Rajasthan Royals, where a tally of 543 runs from 16 matches had helped Rajasthan win the IPL. In the final, his magnificent 117 off just 57 balls helped Chennai soar past Sunrisers Hyderabad's 178 and win with eight wickets and nine balls left.

All these are excellent signs for the defending champions, who will hope he can keep up his match-winning form.

Watson Wants Australian Team to Visit Pakistan

Shane Watson, Quetta Gladiators all-rounder, extremely impresses with the security measures undertaken by the government for the PSL and overall security situation in Pakistan.

During an interview with a local cricket website, the veteran all-rounder expressed his desire to see the Australian cricket team touring Pakistan.

Watson, who is also the President of the Australian Cricketers Association (ACA), said “I would absolutely recommend players in Australia to visit Pakistan. Taking security as the starting point, the way the things have been rolled out the last time I was here and this time as well, it’s phenomenal.”

He added “Everyone is very content because of the security that is around and we all feel very safe. We can see how much the people of Pakistan love their cricket and have been starved of live cricket as well. It is a beautiful thing to be a part of”.

The 38-year-old also said that that his family wanted to accompany him for the PSL and experience Pakistani hospitality. But, the kids’ schools got in the way and family had to stay back this time around. After coming to the PSL last season in the finals and then seeing it with my own eyes, I was reassured on how incredibly safe it is here. My family is excited for me to be here.

Unfortunately, they cannot come over this time because my kids have school. My family has got no concerns whatsoever with me being here.
