According to Damen Shipyards, the OPV 2400 can support up to two additional “mission modules,” which can include anti-submarine warfare (ASW), mine countermeasures (MCM), logistics, and others.

Damen’s OPVs were designed as lower cost ships compared to the Sigma. For example, Malaysia’s OPV 1800s came with a unit price of $55.7 million, which is lower than the average cost of multirole corvettes, such as the MILGEM or Gowind, which are priced at around $250-300 million per ship.

is these navy ships better than the ones we are building with turkey

both belongs to different categories..
Type-054 is a frigate, so its big with more fire power , VLS , radars etc and speed.
Turkish Milgem is a Corvette, its has limited capabilities thn frigate but its main feature is Stealth tech and VLS.

.
Design & Specifications

When the MoDP and Damen Shipyards first announced the deal in 2017, they said that these ships would be OPVs with a length of 90 m, displacement of 1,900 tons, and maximum speed of 22 knots.

However, since their launch, the PN stated that the ships were in fact corvettes with a markedly heavier displacement of 2,300-tons. Moreover, the PN’s ‘corvette’ does not appear to be a direct variation of the Damen OPV-line or the Sigma corvette and frigate series.

Rather, it appears that the PN’s corvette draws from both the OPV and Sigma lines. It is possible that the PN’s corvette is closer to the OPV line, at least in terms of hull and superstructure construction.

While the PN did change the scope of the program, it is unlikely that it would have deviated too far from what it and Damen had originally agreed to under the OPV contract in 2017.

One possibility could be that the PN’s corvettes are based on the Damen OPV 2400, which (like the 1,900 OPV) has a length of 90 m and a maximum speed 23 knots. The OPV 2400 supports a crew of 60.

Granted, the cost of electronics, sensors, and weapons on multirole corvettes constitute a large portion – if not the majority – of the cost, controlling the baseline cost will generally result in a lower overall price.

[QUOTE]It is a Deep Sea Survey vessel used for Oceanographic Research.
The task of survey vessels is to map the bottom, benthic zone, full water column, and surface for the purpose of:

Hydrography
General oceanography
Marine habitats
Salvage
Dredging Planning
Marine archaeology

PN operated Behr Paima since 1982, which was bought from Japan for the same job.
The ship, since its induction, has carried-out extensive survey of Pakistan's coastal areas on different scales. The ship partially surveyed the south-eastern sea-front of Pakistan that comprises Indus River Delta creeks. However, sea area west and south of Karachi has been thoroughly surveyed. The ship also provided valuable data for building of Jinnah Naval Base channel in Ormara. Pakistan’s deep water port at Gwadar was also planned based on data rendered by the ship. The corresponding series of charts on different scales have been published for the entire coast of Pakistan based on ships surveyed data. The ship has also conducted dredging surveys, wreck search, north markings, tidal data collections, and detached surveys etc.

Turkey’s multibillion dollar defense giant ASELSAN to open offices in Pakistan

upload_2019-12-12_2-53-52-jpeg.593515

Turkey’s defense giant ASELSAN (Askeri Elektronik Sanayi, Military Electronic Industries) is preparing to launch its offices in Pakistan from January 1, 2020.

The company is looking to strengthen its marketing openings as it is aiming to expand its defense transactions with Pakistan. It is also likely to open its base in Ukraine as well, according to the Turkish media.

Turkey and Pakistan are traditional allies who have a close and harmonious relationship. The recent consolidation of defense interests is unprecedented and it signifies a convergence of national interests of both the nations. Pakistan has growing defense industry and wants to gain ground in the global market.

Aselsan revealed that in November 2019, the company got a €176.9 million contract from ASFAT A.Ş (Military Factory and Shipyard Management Inc) to supply subsystems for the Pakistan Navy’s four MILGEM (i.e., Jinnah-class) multi-mission corvettes/light frigates. This was Aselsan’s second largest contract involving Pakistan – the first was a $254.73 million US deal in July for the Pakistan Army’s T129 ATAK attack helicopter program.

Back in July 2018, Pakistan’s Ministry of Defence Production (MoDP) signed a contract with ASFAT A.Ş for the four MILGEMs. The value of the Pakistani MILGEM contract is reportedly US$1.5 billion. The four ships are due for delivery to the Pak Navy by 2023-2024, with the first ship set to arrive in 2022-2023.

Under the contract, Pakistan’s Karachi Shipyard & Engineering Works (KSEW) will manufacture two of the ships, with the other two being built in Turkey. Pakistan will also receive “complete transfer of technology and the transfer of intellectual property for the design of (the MILGEM).”

In the interim, Pakistan is a top buyer of military hardware from ASELSAN — as of late, on May 19, Pakistan Navy brought ‘torpedo rockets’ from ASELSAN, which is created to counter short proximity activities.

ASELSAN deals with manufacturing military equipment, which designs, develops and manufactures modern electronic systems for military and industrial customers — worldwide well known for manufacturing electronic warfare, weapons, command control and navigation systems.

It currently sells its products to 65 countries, and the company is aiming to expand its defense transactions.

The company also has offices in Azerbaijan, the Philippines, Qatar, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Saudi Arabia, Malaysia, South Africa, the United Arab Emirates and Northern Macedonia. The localization efforts of the company in the countries it operates boost its export capacity. The offices are run by Turkish general managers and employ local staff.

a good sign for Pak-Turk relations .....

lets see if we can get the turkish upgrade kit for the F16 with AESA..That should ruffle some feathers across the border.

Heard Pak might join the Turkish 5th Gen fighter project. Also I think, might be wrong though, but Aselsan provided part of the avionics for the F-35? Could be beneficial for us :ashwin

[Video/Pic] Pakistan Navy Inducts High-Tech ATR-72 Maritime Patrol Aircrafts & LUNA NG Tactical UAVs

Induction ceremony of state-of-the-art Maritime Patrol Aircraft (MPA) and tactical Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) in Pakistan Navy Fleet was held in Karachi.

Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Zafar Mahmood Abbasi graced the occasion as chief guest.

Speaking on the occasion, the naval chief highlighted the role of Pakistan Navy in safeguarding the maritime frontiers and ensuring safety to Sea Lines of Communication. He said that induction of marinised ATR aircraft with weapons and sensors would substantially enhance operational capabilities of Pakistan Navy Fleet’s air arm. Moreover, induction of another ATR in cargo/ para-drop role would provide added flexibility to the Special Forces’ operations, he said.

The chief guest further added that induction of LUNA NG UAVs in fleet air arm would further augment Pakistan Navy’s intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) capabilities in maritime domain, especially in creeks areas and along the coastal belt. The admiral urged the crew of newly inducted ATRs & UAVs to make optimum utilisation of those platforms in order to contribute effectively towards combat potential of Pakistan Navy Fleet.

Appreciating the detection of an Indian submarine by Pakistan Navy Aircraft in post-Pulwama stand-off, the naval chief said, “I am glad that PN Aviation Fleet proved its mastery and made the whole nation proud.”

He advised the aviators to keep the same spirit and be prepared for any eventuality that may rise anytime. He highlighted that Pakistan Navy’s developmental plans also included acquisition of Unmanned Combat Aerial Vehicles (UCAVs) in support of maritime operations.

The ceremony was attended by high-ranking officials, serving and retired aviators of Pakistan Navy and sister services, and representatives of government departments concerned.

Who cares? We are facing an invisible enemy at the moment and we are failing. If we spent more money on our people (schools and hospitals); they would have handled this crisis much better today.

Amazing how 2 are being built in China and 2 in Pakistan. Same 2x2 formula is being followed with Turkey for their corvettes. As well as Chinese subs.

Inshallah in 10 years we will be producing all of this indigenously.

Fun fact in the 1960 -70s we used to build large ships FOR the Chinese. We have actually gone full speed in reverse with nitrous engaged.

We still need to improve our navy where we lag behind massively when it comes to India.

45 international navies coming to Pakistan for ‘Aman 21’

Pakistan Navy to host largest international maritime exercise

Pakistan_177779200d6_large.jpg

Islamabad: The Pakistan Navy is all set to host the largest multinational maritime exercise ‘Aman 21’ in the North Arabian Sea in February 2021 with a mission to attain regional peace and counter maritime challenges.

More than 45 countries including the world’s top navies will take part in the 7th exercise of the series held every two years since 2007. What makes this year’s exercise more significant is that it brings the three largest navies, US, China and Russia, under one platform for collaborative maritime security. This will be the first time in a decade that Russia will participate in a joint military exercise with NATO members.

LEONARDO WINS BID TO CONVERT 10 PAKISTAN NAVY EMBRAER LINEAGE 1000s INTO LONG RANGE MPAs

Pakistan_Navy_Lineage_1000_640.jpg

ISLAMABAD — Pakistan has hired an Italian defense company to convert three Embraer Lineage 1000 regional jetliners into long-range maritime patrol aircraft for its Navy.

The contract with Leonardo involves the acquisition of two aircraft to join the single Lineage 1000 already in Pakistan, followed by the design, modification, installation and integration of an anti-submarine warfare and maritime patrol package. The three planes will then be introduced into service as Sea Sultan patrol aircraft.

Follow-on contracts are expected to bring the total number of Sea Sultans to 10, replacing the country’s long-serving P-3C Orion fleet. Defense News learned in October that the Navy selected the Lineage 1000 to replace the fleet.

Under an additional contract, South Africa’s Paramount Group will handle the pre-conversion maintenance, repair and overhaul of the aircraft.

Pakistan’s Ministry of Defence Production, which handles acquisitions, did not reply to Defense News for comment.

A spokesperson with Leonardo declined to comment for this story. Similarly, Paramount Group declined to comment, citing “strict confidentiality agreements.”

However, Defense News obtained additional details from a source with knowledge of Pakistan’s ongoing defense programs. A closed tender was launched in November 2020 involving Leonardo, Germany’s Rheinland Air Services and Turkish Aerospace Industries on the basis of their proven maritime patrol aircraft conversion experience.

Rheinland previously won an order for the Sea Eagle maritime patrol aircraft conversion of ATR 72 propliners for the Pakistan Navy, beating out a rival offer from TAI, which offered a package based on that developed for the Turkish Navy’s ATR 72s.

Only Leonardo was shortlisted on a technical basis for the Lineage 1000 conversion. This was mainly on the basis of the Leonardo SeaSpray radar installed on the RAS 72 Sea Eagle aircraft and Sea King helicopters, and the trusted Italian-origin torpedo-release systems already installed on the Pakistan Navy’s anti-submarine warfare aircraft, and which would certainly be fitted to the Sea Sultan.

Leonardo also has a good relationship with Pakistan’s other military branches, supplying Grifo radars for Mirage III and F-7PG Fishcan fighters, delivering AW139 helicopters, and helping procure refurbished M109 self-propelled howitzers.

After three months of detailed technical discussions, and the securing of internal funds from Pakistan’s Armed Forces Development Plan, a $190 million contract was signed between the Ministry of Defence Production and Leonardo in the penultimate week of June.

Brazil, where Embraer is based, is also developing a maritime patrol aircraft program based on conversion of the Lineage 1000 to replace it P-3B Orion fleet, but there appears to be no cooperation between the two programs.

Pakistan’s 2010 acquisition of Mectron-made PAA-1 Piranha within-visual-range missiles (now SIATT after the parent company spun off the Mectron unit) and MAR-1 anti-radiation missiles did not lead to previously promised defense industry cooperation.
Aerospace expert Justin Bronk at the Royal United Services Institute said expectations of international cooperation on the Lineage 1000 conversion programs wasn’t realistic.

“MPA mission systems are actually some of the most sensitive programs in the defense aviation world, and so there may be security reasons why Pakistan and/or Brazil would chose not to cooperate on a Lineage 1000 conversion,” he said.

The Pakistan Navy detected and blocked an Indian submarine from entering Pakistani waters on October 16 (last Saturday), the military's media wing revealed on Tuesday.

The Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) said the navy showed "unremitting vigilance and professional competence" in ascertaining and blocking the attempted entry of the Indian vessel.

"During the prevailing security milieu, a strict monitoring watch has been kept by Pakistan Navy to safeguard maritime frontiers of Pakistan," the ISPR said.

It added that the Oct 16 incident was the third time an Indian naval submarine had been detected and tracked by the Pakistan Navy's long-range maritime patrol aircraft.

"The recent incident reflects the deplorable Indian machinations vis-à-vis commitment and resolve of Pakistan Navy to defend maritime frontiers of the motherland," the statement reads.

The last such reported incident occurred in March 2019 when the navy had detected and thwarted a similar attempted entry by an Indian submarine. "The Pakistan Navy used its specialised skills to ward off the submarine, successfully keeping it from entering Pakistani waters," a statement from the navy's spokesperson had said at the time.

Another attempt was made in November 2016 when an Indian submarine was tracked and pushed clear out of Pakistan's waters.

The UN Convention on Law of Sea does not allow a state to carry out manoeuvres or exercises in the exclusive economic zone (EEZ) and in the continental shelf of another coastal state without its consent. EEZ signifies an area of coastal water and seabed within a certain distance of a country's coastline that cannot be entered without permission or prior information.

The area of Pakistan's territorial waters is 12 nautical miles while its seabed territory (EEZ) grew to 290,000 square kilometres in 2015.

A ship of the US Navy, USS Pearl Harbor, visited Karachi Port and conducted various drills with the Pakistan Navy, stated a press release issued by the services’ public relations department on Saturday.

According to the communique, the ship was received by officials of the US Embassy and Pakistan Navy upon its arrival at the port.

“The visit of US ship included harbour and sea phases,” the press release added. “In harbour phase, table-top discussions on professional matters and bilateral interactions were held. Whereas sea phase included various seamanship and warfare drills.”

The statement further added that USS Pearl Harbor’s visit to Karachi and the subsequent joint naval drills were a testimony of the Pakistan Navy’s resolve to work towards regional peace and further strengthen mutual collaboration between the two navies.

In July, a Pakistan Navy ship participated in the Russian Navy Day Parade, which was held in St Petersburg.

Russian President Vladimir Putin inspected the parade which was attended by about 4,000 sailors, more than 50 ships, boats and submarines, as well as 48 naval aviation airplanes and helicopters.

“Pakistan Navy ship ZULFIQUAR participated in Russia Navy Day Parade. Russian President inspected the parade. The event was attended by delegates from 21 countries,” said Pakistan Navy in a tweet from its official handle.

Pakistan foils attempt by Indian submarine to enter territorial waters

Pakistan had anticipated infiltration attempt by India as PN is conducting Seaspark-22 wargames

The Pakistan Navy has foiled an attempt by a submarine of the Indian navy to enter the waters of Pakistan, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said on Thursday.

The Indian submarine, the latest Kalvari class vessel based on the French Scorpene-class, was tracked and intercepted by anti-submarine warfare units of the Pakistan Navy (PN).

"Indian Navy deployed its submarine against Pakistan with ulterior motives. However, yet again through continuous vigilance and professionalism, Pakistan Navy has foiled Indian Submarine’s attempt of entering into Pakistani waters," said the ISPR.

The military's media wing stated that the possibility of Indian infiltration attempts by sub-surface units was anticipated due to the prevailing security situation and the ongoing PN wargames - Seaspark-22.

Hence, the navy maintained strict monitoring and "stringent vigilance" procedures were enforced.

As a result of the measures taken, the ISPR said "Pakistan Navy anti-submarine warfare units took the lead and prematurely intercepted and tracked the latest Indian submarine Kalvari on 01 March 2022".

The Indian vessel, a diesel-electric attack submarine, was reportedly on a reconnaissance and an intelligence-gathering mission and was most likely spotted by maritime surveillance assets when it came to snorkelling depth to recharge its batteries.

The military media wing added this is the fourth detection of an Indian submarine during the last five years and is a "reflection of Pakistan Navy’s competence and resolve to defend maritime frontiers of Pakistan".

In October 2019, another Indian submarine was detected and pushed out of Pakistani territorial waters by the PN.

New Delhi: High resolution satellite images accessed by NDTV indicate the presence of several frontline Chinese warships, a submarine and fleet support ships docked at Karachi harbour as Beijing and Islamabad kick off their largest ever Naval exercises.

The Sea Guardian-3 exercises come at a time when China has significantly expanded its maritime presence in the waters of the Indian Ocean. This includes the construction of a major base in Djibouti in the Horn of Africa and also through the sale of several modern platforms to regional Navies, including, most recently, four Type-054 A/P frigates to the Pakistan Navy.

A number of Chinese surveillance and oceanographic survey ships have also been detected in the Indian Ocean over the last year. Earlier this month, a Chinese ocean research ship, the Shi Yan 6, docked in Colombo but not before it sailed north into the Bay Bengal between the Tamil Nadu coastline and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. It is widely believed that China has been actively charting the waters of the Indian Ocean, including the Bay of Bengal, to enable extensive submarine operations across the region.

The Chinese naval assets docked in Karachi include a Type 039 diesel-electric submarine. While the precise capability of this submarine, including how quiet it is, are closely held Naval secrets, the presence of the boat in the waters of the Arabian Sea, showcase Beijing's confidence in being able to deploy Naval assets several thousand kilometres away from their homeports.

This is believed to be the eighth time since the Chinese PLAN (People's Liberation Army Navy) deployed a submarine in the Indian Ocean since 2013.

China is also known to have operated nuclear-powered fast attack submarines in the Indian Ocean. These can, theoretically, remain indefinitely submerged since they do not need to surface other than to replenish supplies onboard. It is unclear if a Chinese nuclear submarine has also been deployed with the Chinese fleet taking part in these exercises.

Sources monitoring the deployment of Chinese warships in the Indian Ocean for the Sea Guardian exercises say the Type-039 submarine and its accompanying support ship were regularly tracked by Navy P8 reconnaissance aircraft after they entered the region through the Malacca straits.

This, sources point out, is a prelude to what may emerge in the future of a greater Chinese presence in the region. "It's not a question of if but when China decides to deploy a carrier battle group in the Indian Ocean region," they say. With its existing port facilities, including its first overseas base in Djibouti, berthing an aircraft carrier and its accompanying battle-group will not pose a logistical hurdle.

In April, 2015, the Pakistan government agreed to purchase eight variants of the Type 039 submarines in a deal reportedly worth $5 billion. Four of the submarines were expected to be built by the Karachi Shipyard & Engineering Works. None of the submarines have been delivered so far.

Satellite images with NDTV indicate the presence of a Chinese Type 926 submarine tender docked in Karachi. One of three ships of this class believed to be in service with the Chinese Navy, the Type 926 replenishes submarines and is capable of rescuing a submarine in distress. The presence of this ship is a giveaway to the presence of Chinese submarines in the vicinity.

The Chinese battle-group also includes a Type 52D destroyer, two Type 54 frigates and a Type 903 Replenishment Oiler which enables the warships and submarine to sustain long-range operations.

"Our planners and decision-makers have to squarely face the fact that the Chinese have vital interests in the Indian Ocean - specifically its sea lanes which carry most of China's energy, trade, raw materials and finished goods. Consequently, we are going to see the increasing presence of PLA Navy (PLAN) in the Indian Ocean; warships as well as submarines. Neither their presence on the high seas, nor their putting into (friendly) ports is something that we can take exception to," said former Navy chief Admiral Arun Prakash (retd).

"Over the past two decades, China has created enough maritime footholds, right across the IOR - what was termed a "string of pearls" - but was actually a series of friendly ports financed by China - which could be used by the PLA Navy as and when required. In 2016, China established its first overseas military base in Djibouti, and more will follow - perhaps in Africa." he said.

Pakistan celebrates Navy Day 2024: Operation Dwarka remembered

Pakistan marked Navy Day today, celebrating with national pride the pivotal role of the Pakistan Navy in the 1965 Indo-Pakistani war, particularly highlighting Operation Dwarka, a daring naval strike that demonstrated Pakistan’s naval prowess.

On the night of September 8, 1965, the Pakistan Navy carried out Operation Dwarka, codenamed “Operation Somnath.” Ships, including PNS Babur, Khyber, Badr, Jahangir, Alamgir, Shahjahan, and Tipu Sultan, launched a surprise attack on the Indian naval base at Dwarka.

The strike, lasting just four minutes, inflicted significant damage on Indian infrastructure, setting parts of the base ablaze and crippling the Indian Navy’s planned operations against Karachi.

This successful operation, deep within Indian waters, was a key component of Pakistan’s broader defence strategy.

It showcased the navy’s capability to defend Pakistan’s maritime boundaries alongside the Army and Air Force.

Naval Chief Admiral Naveed Ashraf said the Navy Day is a remarkable day in our naval history, where our fearless warriors, driven by unshakeable resolve, struck against the enemy with absolute impunity and bravado.

He said this day stands as an enduring tribute to the selfless sacrifices of our gallant officers and sailors, whose exemplary valour continues to inspire generations and inflame the spirit of patriotism across the nation.

Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif on Sunday lauded the Pakistan Navy for their unwavering commitment and patriotism.

“On Navy Day, I extend my heartfelt felicitations to all members of the Pakistan Navy. Their steadfast commitment to protecting our maritime boundaries exemplifies their unwavering dedication to duty and passion for the country,” the prime minister wrote on his official X timeline.

He acknowledged the Navy's resilience in overcoming challenges, adding, “We deeply value their service and sacrifices, and their contributions to safeguarding our maritime borders.”

Navy Day, celebrated annually on September 8, reaffirms Pakistan’s commitment to securing its maritime interests.

The day also honoured the Pakistan Navy’s continued vigilance in recent years, including the detection of an Indian submarine in 2019, proving its readiness.

Operation Dwarka remains a testament to Pakistan’s naval strength and the nation’s unified defence against external threats.
