COVID-19 has forced cricket lovers, in the absence of any live cricket, to scan the archives. So I'd thought I'd share a "shot of the day" - cricket strokes that've had rising off my seat. Let's start.

Yes folks in 2004 many fans, including yours truly, actually thought Yasir Hameed would be our next great opening batsman after Saeed Anwar.

This was a fairly meaningless warm-up match prior to the 2004 Champions Trophy at Lord's between Pakistan and Australia.

Brett Lee is steaming in. Australia are defending 269. Lee decides to test the youngster with a short pitched delivery. I'll let you enjoy what happens from 1:07 on.

Yeah great shot and a great stylish little innings

Its unfortunate hameed couldnt work n improve his limitations including his lack of foot movement to the pitch of the ball and his ability to not fish outside the stumps

Btw we saw the usual struggle by the pakistan top order
What do you expect when your sending afridi at 3, malik at 4 and the main batters hiding down the order

ill take a bit of liberty with your title, not one shot, but the stroke play on display as brian lara dismantles adam dale from 3:15 is legendary

first a pull off the front foot standing outside the crease, followed by a pull he nails even better that lands in the stands, then we have the most disdainful straight drive you can imagine, then a slap of a rank pie finished off with another front full pull as if to remind dale how slow he is.

perhaps people romanticise past eras excessively but that is some special strokeplay and i grew up thinking of lara as a genius, and still think he is.

 
Back when Pakistan were producing promising batsmen who could have been top draw had they continued to remain hungry.

Very rarely do we see exciting Batting talent come through now

Brian Lara is the ultimate batting personified! Be it offspin, legspin, swing, seam, reverse swing, he is an artist. A true genius.

I can say Brian Lara was to batting what Wasim Akram is to bowling.

I don't recall us producing any promising batsmen during this period unless you count the resurgence of Misbah in 2007.

Imran Farhat
Salman Butt
Kamran Akmal
Mohammad Hafeez
Shoaib Malik the Batsman

All of these guys kind of emerged around the same time out of which no only Malik and Hafeez served Pakistan for some time, and none of them went on to cement themselves with a world class average of 40+ in ODIs and 50+ in Tests. It’s a shame really because the names I have mentioned, if you see their batting videos of that time they show a lot of promise and flare, something that went missing post 2011
 
Watched that Hameed pull live, and still sticks out in memory clearly. One of the most audacious pull shots ever played
 
Hameed was particularly impressive against india, he was a gifted strokeplayer and i think he was also the fastest to 1000 odi runs at that time.
Another example of pakistani talent fading away after a tremendous first season.
 
I remember Yasir Hameed playing some incredible cover drives vs India. Both him and Imran Nazir were amazing when it came down to timing and strokeplay.

Unfortunately that was standard pakistan tactics post saeed anwar

Where most teams were promoting their best players to the top of the order to set the tone and get big hundreds, our best bats were sliding down the order by sending lesser batsmen ahead of them to see off the new ball

I wonder how many more games we wouldve won if they had taken the bull by the horns and batted big up top instead of coming in at 60-3 all the time and resurrecting innings
 
We got to watch a lot of Hameed's talent in the legendary Jit Lo Dil series. He had talent..

Also, Imran Farhat - Yasir Hameed was starting to become an exciting pair

Another one like azhar mahmood and recently abid ali who scored centuries for fun on debuts before the opposition studied their footwork and consigned them to history

It was absolute atrocious tactics Putting yourself before the team needs

Moyo avged 53 runs at no 3 but played most of his cricket ar 4\5 where he avged 10-15 runs less

We had the likes of ganguly, tendulkar, gilchrist dilshan all mid order batters initially promoted and setting the games up with big odi hundreds and the likes of inzy sliding further and further down the order as years went by content with 50s and finishing with only 10 odi tons

India always pick 4-5 proper batsmen. Not 2 specialist openers and 3 middle order batsmen.

All solid sides in the world have 4-5 batsmen all capable of batting in the top 4

Pakistan have never done this, theyve got to play 2 specialist openers however avge they mave been, 2-3 mid batters which include a shoiab malik and then 2 questional allrounders

In the above team inzy only had him and yousuf as the above avge batters in the team!!!!!
 
Yasir and Nazir would have been ODI greats if they had played on modern day roads.

Its a pity that we used to have aggressive players like Saeed Anwer, Nazir, Farhat, Afridi, Yasir, Razzaq, Mahmood in an era which demanded attritional cricket.
And have to contend with Azhar, Misbah, Shehzad, Imam, Malik, Hafeez when 300+(in ODIs) is the norm.
 
Yasir made batting look so easy when at his best. Lovely driver of the ball and good against pace and spin.

Sadly he made a complete fool of himself in England in 2010.
 
Yasir Hameed brings tears to my eyes... Nazir, Butt as well. We could have done so much more had they stuck on with integrity and worked on their game.
 
Trying to figure out who the commentator is during the first 7 overs with Nasser?
 
My days! What a gorgeous little knock from my one of my favourite batsman Yasir Hameed.

By the way Malik did what Malik does best. Fail against a decent bowling attack (though the pitch was flat).

You have got to be kidding me. You use these names and say very rarely do we see such batting talent come through now. All of these players are really quite terrible. People might be excited to see Yasir Hameed's little cameo in the opening post, but he was an atrocious batsman overall. He was so bad that the cameo innings above can and should be classed as a fluke (and even then he didn't reach 50).

As someone who suffered years of watching Hameed, Farhat and Taufeeq open for Pakistan, I can safely say that the batting talent coming through now is light years ahead of the previous generation. Barbar is the best young batting talent since Inzamam arrived in 92. Harris Sohail is an absolutely incredible. Imam is a wonderful prospect. Heck even Fakhar won us the Champions Trophy. The names on your list aren't even half the batsmen of these guys.

I had high hopes from Taufeeq Umar especially when he scored a century against a strong South Africa attack in South Africa featuring Pollock, Ntini, Hayward e.t.c. He was the biggest dissapointment

Same here. I thought Taufeeq could be the real deal. But then there was a time I thought that about Hameed, Nasir Jamshed and Ahmed Shehzad (but never Imran Farhat who I just accepted wasn't very capable!). Unfortunatley there are a lot of examples in Pakistan where batsmen come and shine brightly for all of about 30 seconds before fading so drastically that you struggle to believe they ever achieved anything.

I pray that Fakhar doesn't take this route. His recent performances are questionable but inshallah that's nothing more than a blip. I back him to come good again.

Taufeeq Umar had a hilarious trigger movement.

Always knew he's not gonna make it with that kind of a funny dance.
 
Taufeeq was good for tests specially given the quality of openers Pakistan had post Sohail/Anwar
