[VIDEOS] The rise and fall of Mohammad Irfan

I felt his bowling action was just not forceful compared to someone like Harmison. He didn't make good use of his height as a result.

He did the best he could with his career considering his background and how late in the day he started playing cricket professionally.

Such a shame though that he forgot his roots.

He always comes across as a humble guy in interviews. Surprising to here he has forgotten his roots

Pakpassion really helped him actually get recognised back in the day.

The hype was crazy back then on here.

Why does he keep getting picked for tournaments?

Plays one match, then can barely walk next day.

Played yesterday and dropped today.

How do you mean his roots saj? Do you mean the fact pakpassion promoted his heavily before he came to prominence?

Yes people involved with PakPassion helped him. Yet when people asked him who had helped him he didn't even mention it and instead was saying it was friends in Pakistan.

I lost respect for the guy after that.

totally agree with saj here
i got excited to watch him bowl just because of hype created here in pakpassion

Its a shame that is the case. I always go by the motto your true friends are those that remember / help you in your difficult times

Irfan should never forget who helped him when he was invisible to everyone else

Wow. I have lost some respect for him too. Even a simple thank you would have been nice. .

Mohammad Irfan claims the wicket of Chris Lynn on his first ball of PSL6 for Peshawar!

If he has decent tournament, he will be recalled based on the request of Misbah.

He'll always produce wicket taking deliveries, just as surely as he'll start spraying the ball down both sides of the wicket as soon as he's wearing the green shirt again.

4 39 0 today against QG

Poor guy could barely run to the wicket in that 4th over. Looked like he'd bowled 24 overs on the bounce not four.

39 years old today (6th June)! Amazing that he is still playing in PSL but guess must be doing something right

I don't know but even today he seems to be as gentle mannered and humble as he was on day 1. Infact thats probably the reason for his lack of aggression leading to his down fall in intl cricket.

He is only good for these leagues now, fair play to him, he can earn as much as he can. His decline started in international cricket when his pace declined from the early to late 140's to the early 120's and 130's. He was at his peak from 2012 to 2013 but Misbah and Co ran him through the ground and he picked up an injury. He was not the same bowler after that

i think he did rather well, for someone whos only distinguishing trait was his height, granted it was a massive distinguishing trait.

unfortunately he did not have the phsyical tolerance to play test matches. in two tests of his four at least he bowled really well. he had all the ingredients to be a great third bowler, but it was physically, excuse the pun, just out of his reach.

still pretty cool that pak will pbly have the record for the tallest test cricketer for quite some time.

3 crucial wickets in one over from Mohammad Irfan against Quetta. Can still be a game-changer on his day it seems

Hes still a good bowler.

I really enjoy watching his first over, thats when he is really dangerous. Always gets an edge to the slip.

A very humble person aswell. Hopefully can play some more t20s around the world

Hope he is ok but must say I am surprised that he played so many games with his fitness issues.

MULTAN: The tallest test cricketer and fast bowler Muhammad Irfan on Friday said that he will return to cricket soon after getting fit.

He said that Pakistan Super League (PSL) was our brand and we should support it. Muhammad Irfan informed that his non participation into PSL-7 was due to fitness problem. Test cricketer Muhammad Irfan expressed these views while holding a press conference during Pakistan Peace Project inauguration ceremony here.

On this occasion, Zain Baloch, project officer Pakistan peace captains Faizan Ali Khan and others were present. The fast bowler said he support Multan Sultans team and termed bowling attack of Lahore Qalandar as strong in ongoing HBL PSL-7.

He said that holding of Cricket League for South Punjab was a good initiative and added that Pakistan peace captain project will also help establishing a peaceful society. He said that promotion of sports was dire need to attract youth in positive activities. Projects like Pakistan Peace Captain could be a turning point for youngsters, Muhammad Irfan concluded.

So he is back in the PSL!

Quetta Gladiators: Left-arm pacer Mohammad Irfan, will replace Mohammad Hasnain for the remainder of the tournament, due to the latter being banned from bowling.

Why do they keep bringing out the big man when hes clearly struggling year on year with his fitness and age?

When he first came to the scene, I thought he would be the next big thing. That didn't happen.

When he emerged onto the scene in 2012-13, he was overhyped to the moon because of his height and was even drafted into the Test side due to media pressure.

He was always average and threatening only for the first 2-3 overs and then he would lose steam.

Not to mention, he was always on the brink of getting injured and we saw that in Test cricket.

It is funny how everyone thought he would be Pakistan’s trump card in the 2015 World Cup on the bouncy Australian pitches but he had an average tournament before getting injured as expected.

He was finished 5-6 years ago and Mickey did the right thing by discarding him for good before Misbah brought him back in 2019-20 which was completely bizarre.

Nonetheless, the fact that he is still getting picked in PSL shows the lack of talent in the country.

He was overhyped to the moon that is true back in 2010s.He was almost selected for the world t20 but afridi requested PCB to not be stupid and send in sami instead of this guy.
Alot of people including me back than bashed afridi for it, and than by the 2010 england series we all saw how bad of a bowler he was.

But when he made his comeback, he was good. He had pace by than and India coulldn't play him.

Now he sucks due to being very overage and very fragile due to his height which i believe is bit of a disability.

Irfan had his purple patch in 2013 when he was consistently hitting 142-148 km/hr which along with his height made him a dangerous proposition.

Sadly his body let him down from 2014 onwards and his bowling form was never the same again

Has done well considering the limitations and hurdles he has had. Pretty sure he has some kind of growth hormone problem which he was able to get diagnosed and treated very late or is subacute.

He is still bowling better than Sohail Tanvir though.

Remember Pakpassion's interview on the youtube with him from over 10 years ago.

He was a player heavily promoted here before he was recognized back in the day.

"I had hired a basketball trainer for me": Mohammad Irfan

Left-arm pacer Mohammad Irfan, who last played for Pakistan in November 2019, is aiming to play this year's T20 World Cup in Australia.

The 39-year-old revealed that he has seriously worked on his fitness to return to the Pakistan team.

"I had fitness issues previously but I have worked hard on it. My bowling and fitness have been improved over the time as I had hired a basketball trainer for me," he shared while speaking to a local tv channel.

"My target is to play T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia where I can be lethal with an advantage of extra bounce," he wished.

The seven-foot-one-inch pacer has played 60 ODIs, four Tests and 22 T20Is.

Hes never been fit enough and lethal enough in his life with the extra bounce

Hes not gonna be any good at 39

Abu Dhabi [UAE], December 4 (ANI): Pakistan pacer Mohammad Irfan shared his views on the India-Pakistan tussle about travelling to each other’s countries and expressed that both teams should visit each other to play and players should kept away from politics.

The left-arm pacer who is playing in the T10 league for Northern Warriors also stated that players should be kept away from politics and rumours surrounding the controversy should not be entertained.

“I have said it before too. Players should be kept away from politics. Pakistan should go to India & India should come to Pakistan to play. It increases love between people from both countries. Cricket should be separate from politics. Don’t go with statements that Pakistan won’t come to India, let the Board decide it,” said the pacer.

The lanky pacer talked about the Indian bowlers and appreciated BCCI’s move to back youngsters that can bowl at the express pace of 140 and above.

“You need 140-plus bowlers to succeed. Maintaining that speed is difficult. Bowlers need a proper diet plan and close assistance from coaches. They have roped-in bowlers who are quick. Umran and Arshdeep need to be groomed to lead Indian bowling in future,” said the left-arm pacer.

Irfan also shared his views on playing in the 10-over format and stated that the format forces bowlers to be accurate and challenge themselves.

“It is tough for bowlers. The bowlers need to be more accurate with their lines and lengths. It gives the crowd more entertainment,” mentioned Irfan.

While mentioning the current Pakistani batting setup he said that the team is in safe hands with the likes of Babar Azam, Mohammad Rizwan and Iftikhar Ahmed.

“Pakistan cricket had a phase that didn’t see them produce good batters but Babar Azam, Rizwan and Iftikhar have filled that gap,” stated the pacer.

He also shared his thoughts on the recently concluded T20 World Cup in Australia and talked about its highlights.

“The World Cup saw Virat come in the form. The hype was there about an India-Pakistan final but Pakistan lost against India. They played very well and made a comeback to reach the final,” remarked Irfan. (ANI)

Mohammad Irfan in a recent interview shared following reservations regarding past team selectors:

"There are many things that a player isn't aware of initially but its only eventually that he gets to know about the injustice meted out to him. They (coaching staff) were totally clueless about how to train a player with a big height like me. I was subjected to same training regiment as being done by a 5 foot or a 6 foot guy. So there was no set parameter of training for a guy with 7 feet height like how much would he sprint, how much weight should he lift etc."

"It was only in USA where I get to know what training was required for a guy with 7 feet height when I met a basket ball trainer there. So It was there I get knowledge about what was required of me as a big height athlete. I was supposed to do more cycling, less running and more strength related exercises. So I get the air of these tips late but these tips significantly improved my fitness and bowling. But unfortunately for me, by then such people made it to the selection committee who considered players over 35 years of age as already consumed athletes. Everywhere around the world, the board honor their senior guys but then there is the PCB who looks at players over 35 years with disgust and disdain."

42-year-old Mohammad Irfan's passion for cricket remains unabated. He's playing for Durban Wolves, led by Yasir Shah, in the Zim Afro T10 2024 against Harare Bolts.

He claimed 1 wicket and conceded just 14 runs in his 2-over spell.

He did well in ODI format. Took 83 wickets from 60 ODI games.

Is he the tallest fast bowler of all time?

I wouldn't exactly Pakistan ignores it's over 35s.... if anything it has a fetish for them lol

Today he remained a bit expensive for his side against Joburg Bangla Tigers as he conceded 28 runs in 2 overs while claimed a wicket for his side.

I remember that team India throwdown specialists used stools to deliver balls from a higher angle to the Indian batsmen, preparing them to face the seven-foot-tall Mohammad Irfan. :genius

What was the buzz, and how excited were the guys on this forum when they discovered Irfan?
