A shooting at Donald Trump‘s rally in Butler, Pennsylvania is being investigated as an attempted assassination of the former president and presumptive Republican nominee, law enforcement officials say.

A shooter is dead and an attendee was killed. Two attendees are critically injured. Trump’s campaign says he is “fine” after being whisked off the stage and is being checked out at a local medical facility.

Trump’s private jet has left Pennsylvania, according to a flight tracking website

Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro also said Trump had left the area of Butler, where the rally was held.

Shapiro said Trump was “under the protection of US Secret Service and with the assistance of the Pennsylvania State Police.”

“Lori and I are thankful that his team reports that he is fine and we continue to wish him a full and speedy recovery,” the governor added.

Police ID fatal shooting victim, but aren’t ready to release names

State Police have identified the person killed and people injured but are not prepared to release names, State Police Lt. Col. George Bivens said.

Other than Trump, two people were critically injured and one was killed. All were adult males.

Kevin Rojek, Special Agent in Charge, FBI Pittsburgh field office, said late Saturday: “Tonight we had what we’re calling an assassination attempt on our former president, Donald Trump.”

“We do not currently have an identified motive,” he added.

The FBI was not prepared to release the identity of the shooter, who died at the scene.

Rojek said they received no specific threats ahead of the shooting.

Secret Service faces questions after attack

The attack on Donald Trump at his campaign rally in Pennsylvania has put the spotlight on the apparent security lapse and some are also pointing fingers at the Secret Service for letting an attacker slip by.

The former president himself did thank the Secret Service and other law enforcement "for their rapid response on the shooting that just took place".

But questions are being raised and some are calling it a “complete failure” on the part of the Secret Service.

US House Speaker Speaker Mike Johnson vowed that the House will conduct a full investigation.

In a post on X, formerly Twitter, the speaker said: "The American people deserve to know the truth.

"We will have Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle and other appropriate officials from DHS and the FBI appear for a hearing before our committees ASAP."

The Secret Service has agreed to brief the House Oversight Committee about the attack, a spokesperson confirmed to The Hill.

"He (Trump) does get a very robust former protection detail that is with him all the time. But he doesn't necessarily get all of the different assets that are available. So, I think that there are some aspects of this incident that are going to be investigated," retired Secret Service Supervisor Bobby McDonald told Reuters.

“The Secret Service will now look at what happened and how that they can again develop and continue to enhance their protective methodologies to make sure that things like this do not happen in the future.”

That was my first instinct too at the first glance of the headlines. But the distance from which the shooter shot and how close the bullet went, no one is that accurate to miss by bare inches from a fatal shot at 125 m.
It was a proper assassination attempt, and now Trump might literally alter the constitution with the mandate he and republicans will have. The 2 two term limit might be removed.

DNA test to confirm identity of Trump shooter, says FBI

The FBI says it is unable release the name of the man who is suspected of shooting Trump at this time.

They say the man has been “tentatively identified” but that DNA and biometrics tests must be done to conclusively confirm his identity.

“We are not prepared at this time to release the identity of the potential shooter. We are in the process of doing the confirmation. Once we get the confirmation we will release the name officially to the press,” FBI special agent Kevin Rojek said.

“It’s a matter of doing biometric confirmations. There was no identification on the individual. We are looking at photographs right now. We are trying to run his DNA and get biometric confirmation."

The FBI also could not immediately ascertain what type of firearm was used and how many shots were fired.

Gunman was from Bethel Park, Pennsylvania: FBI

More from the FBI statement which has identified the gunman at the Trump rally as Thomas Matthew Crooks.

It says Crooks was from Bethel Park of Pennsylvania.

This is a town about 70km (43 miles) or an hour's drive from Butler, the site of the attempted assassination.

"This remains an active and ongoing investigation, and anyone with information that may assist with the investigation is encouraged to submit photos or videos online," the statement added.

The shooter was nested on the roof of top of a building opposite where the secret service counter sniper team were housed. How did they not see him? He had a clear view of the former president and only fate intervened to avert a catastrophic tragedy

Trump 'doing well' and grateful to security officers

Donald Trump is "doing well" and is grateful to law enforcement officers, according to a statement published on the Republican National Committee (RNC), external website.

It says he "looks forward to joining you all in Milwaukee as we proceed with our convention to nominate him to serve as the 47th president of the United States. As our party's nominee... [he] will continue to share his vision to Make America Great Again," the statement from the Trump campaign and RNC reads.

Meanwhile a statement has also been published on Truth Social, a platform founded by Trump, via the @realDonaldTrump account.

He thanks law enforcement officers and the Secret Service for their "rapid response".

"Most importantly, I want to extend my condolences to the family of the person at the rally who was killed, and also to the family of another person that was badly injured. It is incredible that such an act can take place in our country.

"Nothing is known at this time about the shooter, who is now dead. I was shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear. I knew immediately that something was wrong in that I heard a whizzing sound, shots, and immediately felt the bullet ripping through the skin.

The Establishment have contacted the US government and offered full support for any investigations into the shooting.

The Establishment spokesman has said' 'We have brotherly relations with the US and have therefore offered our full support. We have good experience in investigating assasination attempts and also have 2-3 suspects ready in GHQ if Amreeka needs any.'

There has been no response to the offer from the US.
 
It's amazing that this morning we should've really been reading about Trump's assassination in the newspapers. Truly a miracle that he was saved by nanometres. He turned his head at the last second if you see the video.
 
This incident pretty much cements Trump's victory in the upcoming election. There's no beating him now.

Trump adviser questions Secret Service after shooting

A senior adviser to Donald Trump's campaign says there are questions about how prepared the Secret Service was.

Speaking to the BBC World Service programme “Weekend”, Stephen Moore calls it a "scary day – we’re all in shock”.

"I got a text from one of my associates saying that Trump had been shot and my heart just sank, and I was afraid to ask the question ‘is he going to be alright?’" Moore says.

"It appeared from the video that he’d only been grazed by this bullet but what’s so frightening to all of us is that if that bullet had been one inch further towards his head this would have been an assassination."

Moore adds that "certainly Trump needs more protection - there’s a lot of inquiry now about whether the Secret Service was totally prepared".

Secret Service under scrutiny as Oversight Committee summons director

The Oversight Committee - the main investigative board of the US House of Representatives - has summoned US Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle to testify at a hearing on 22 July.

"Americans demand answers about the assassination attempt of President Trump," the panel said in a statement on social media.

At a news conference earlier, FBI special agent Kevin Rojek said “it is surprising” that the gunman was able to open fire on the stage before the Secret Service killed him.

But when asked if there was a failure of security, he said they were "not gonna make that assessment" with an active investigation.

The Secret Service was not at the news conference.

No plans for Putin to call Trump: Kremlin​

A spokesman for the Kremlin has commented on the shooting at the Trump rally.

“We do not believe that the attempt to eliminate and assassinate Trump was organised by the current authorities,” Dmitry Peskov told reporters.

“But the atmosphere around candidate Trump … provoked what America is confronting today,” he argued.

“After numerous attempts to remove candidate Trump from the political arena – using first legal tools, the courts, prosecutors, attempts to politically discredit and compromise the candidate – it was obvious to all outside observers that his life was in danger.”

Peskov also said there were no plans for Russian President Vladimir Putin to call Trump in light of the incident.

Security changes expected at Republican convention: Report

The assassination attempt on Trump is prompting officials to re-evaluate security protocol at the upcoming Republican National Convention, according to the ABC News broadcaster, citing a senior US federal official.

Trump still plans to appear at the four-day convention, starting on Monday in Milwaukee, where he will formally be crowned as the party’s nominee for the presidency.

Trump is also expected to unveil his vice presidential running mate at the event.

  • A motive has not been identified, but authorities are treating the shooting as an "assassination attempt"

I don't think it will make much difference who is leader of the US, it's a mutation of a land mass filled with immigrants from all disparate parts. We shouldn't be that surprised that it has turned into a state killing machine since it's entire philosophy is based on subjugating the rest of the world in order to maintain it's own power. There is no local culture, it's just a hotch potch of different cultures often at odds with each other.

Yet the biggest supporter is the Pak establishment, the irony. The US supports Israel in the Gaza war, Pak hates Israel and yet is the US's biggest puppet , again the irony.

And on Trump's shooting - the shooter appears to be a lone wolf. A 20 yr old with some mental issues per some unconfirmed sources. Trump is still taking part in the Republican convention on Monday. But this is unprecedented. Dont know how this will affect the Nov presidential election. Interesting few days ahead

Of course, they have to play down this incident as if some fire cracker was bursted and Trump was saved as a precaution.

This will rally the Republican base, even the ones who've reluctant to sit under a Trump presidency in the GOP will have no other option. Trump now has to appease no one in the party and can pick a running mate of his choosing. Trump way or the highway.

The image of a clinched fist and bloodied Trump Vs a struggling Biden is as stark as it comes. Even the most left wing media cannot snigger at the MAGA bandwagon anymore. Democrats need to find a credible alternative candidate. If they do nothing Trump becomes the world's most powerful man again.

Europe, NATO and the pro Ukraine cohorts must have trembling knees. Either EU grows a spine and battles Putin on their own (ya right) or accept peace with Russia brokered by Trump.

The Middle East will be delegated to Jarod Kushner, who has the ears of the Saudis, Emaratis and Israelis. Iran will fear further sanctions, Mokhber might be prepared for a peace offering but not sure what Khameneni will decide. Iranians are fed up.

Hopefully the two conflicts die down.

He donated to some progressive democratic group. But, he is also a registered Republican. So, it is really odd.

My theory is he is an ex-Republican who switched to Democratic Party due to Trump. Anyway, let's see what they find.

You were the one who deflected and went off topic. The thread is about Trump's shooting. And you go off on the US- mutant mass, immigrants, no culture hotch potch blah blah...

So, on topic - Trump will make full use of this in the election now. His blooded face with the raised fist will be the most iconic moment of this campaign. Not sure if it will translate into votes though. Biden is the weakest incumbent running for re-election ever in US politics in a very long time. The Rep convention o Monday will be a super charged event now.
