What's new

Virat Kohli referring to Fakhar Zaman as a slogger at the press conference is disrespectful

Don't think he called him a slogger. It's a pretty fair statement.

Before that he mentioned that he plays unorthodox shots and not that he slogs.

High risk shots were probably 75% for Sehwag and 60% for Gilchrist.

VK loves percentages. He continues to mention it again and again. Not disrespectful here.

Who cares what the losing captain has to say.

We are champions, my friend.

Just watched the press conference and I can't believe people are trying to make a controversy out of nothing....

Fakhar is a good player but Kohli has his point ..Fakhar has alot to improve..
atm Fakhar is poor mans sharjeel

It's a shame we are talking about this. Kohli was so gracious in that speech.

Saw the press conference.Nowhere did he call Fakhar a slogger. All his comments were fair and perfectly fine.

Kohli is right.

Kohli praised pakistan alot, but his comments here are also very correct.

Fakhar played some unbelievable shots. Those shots of his were indeed very high risky ones.

Thing is, could fakhar replicate such an innings with such shots for pakistan again in future? I doubt it.

His innings was just soo unreal. I enjoyed every bit of it, but i dont expect to see such an innings with such shot selection again

Thing is, fakhar had the confidence to do what he did. But knowing pakistans history of young batsmen from the past 6 years i know where he will end up.

Sour grapes by Kohli. This slogger now is far better then your tailender MS Dhoni!! Being an opener Fakhar's job was to get quick runs which he did. Having said that as a person MS is a class act who I have great respect for. With Azhar being more of a test batsman Fakhar had to take the initiative which he did.

yes fakhar is a slogger and i have already said that he should not go down the afridi way because afridi was a very nice opener and then destroyed his career because of slogging

Am sorry, the thread title is misleading, i saw the Kohli press conference and he did not mention slogger anywhere. He mentioned he played high risk, unorthodox shots which came off.

Wow. So many replies without doing even a minute of research. Kohli when asked about Ashwin did give the defense of not being able to do much against slogs. That coupled with this comment does that perhaps this is how they are keeping the morale high in the squad.

Having said that, Kohli was way more gracious in defeat than most of us on PP. #respect

Had to be said.

And your definition of a slogger is?

And your definition of a slogger is?

Slogger is someone like Pandya, or Yusuf Pathan or Chris lynn, straight forward - power based shots and very little guile or craftiness in shot making .

I don't think Virat meant that at all. Slogger for some reason came to be used by western media as an abusive word somehow.

Fakhar lays high percentage shots, isn't that true.? And we desis need to stop getting riled up for the use of words like that . Sehwag was described as a "reckless slogger" by Jeff Boycott and "sophisticated slogger" by your former coach Geoff Lawson ! Did that stop Sehwag from attaining great success as a batsman ?

Is he not a slogger?

McCullum took the role of appointed slogger.

Nothing disrespectful about it, you need them in ODIs.

Kohli has been very graceful and generally supportive of Pakistan cricketers. Fakhar does play high risk shots.. i mean stepping out of the crease against a spinner is a high risk, and anytime you want to hit a six is a high risk.

Its how you interpret his statement.

Kohli is quite intelligent and has brilliant understanding of the game. You should see his interview in detail, and see how clear-headed he is. For example, his point of view on the bowlers making the batsmen hit where they want them to hit, and then praise if the shot gives you insight into the clarity of his understanding.

Nothing wrong on what he said. He played taking risks which u have to set a mammoth total to defend when u play against India. He was fearless to take the risk. Fakhar has shots but vulnerable at many things it took only 3 overs for India to set him up for the dismissal after that chance fakhar didn't look back played with responsibility and then stamped his authority when the spinners came in took the chance to set the total for the match. After Azhar was run out he took the spinners and scored a very quick 30-40 runs which turned the momentum towards pak.

I was sat 5 yards from Kohli. He was largely respectful of Pakistan.

However he was asked re Ashiwn and some stuff on Fakhar and said that if a spinner is bowling and if runs being are being scored off him by slog type shots then what can the bowler do. Referring to Fakhar's shots against Ashwin.

No probs if he did.

Kohli was gracious overall.

Still a great player but glad he didn't get set for once when it mattered most to Pak.

He never mentioned the world slog. He said Fahar was playing across the line. (which he was)

And even if he said he slogged it's not a big deal. The word is not a bad one in any way and it was not said in a disrespectful way.

One doesnt need to say exact words to imply something.

No one is denying VK wasnt gracious in defeat but this was picked up and its there for all to see.

I might be in minority opinion here but he does seems like a slogger to me, against pacers. Against spinners he was world class & was able to handle them with ease, should play 2-3 down the order to extend his career or he will be figured out soon.

We may not like his on-field behaviour, the celebrations and all the swearing (I certainly don´t), but off the field this guy is very gracious, even in defeats. He gave full credit to Pakistan, congratulated the team and its fans and praised them a lot for the performance. I first began to notice this after the final of the World T20 2014, where after being called upon to the stage to collect his Man of the Tournament trophy, he was being very gracious and even expressed his happiness in seeing Sangakkara and Jayawardene winning something.

Add to that his supportive comments about Amir after the latter´s comeback to international cricket last year. I´m actually surprised to see him behave in such a level-headed manner as soon as he steps outside the cricket field. Clearly, very likable in that regard, and his comments here on Fakhar weren´t disrespectful by any stretch of the imagination.

His comments have also been echoed by a lot of sportswriters who also don't mean any disrespect. It's more "it was just this guy's day, playing unorthodox or high risk shots and it just worked for him".

It's mostly true.

Whether Kohli implied slogger or not depends on the person, Who cares anyway.. I liked that MIGGY made this thread, India Pakistan rivalry is starting to heat up which will produce great cricket, NICE and bring it ONNNNN!!!!!!....

Yeah. He can pull off this kind of innings once in a blue moon. But he will survive as he is playing for Pakistan. After all Afridi survived for do long.

This should be the POTY since it was perfectly written out

Kohli referred Fakhar's game as high risk which is not wrong. That doesn't mean he is calling him a slogger.

I will call someone like McCullum's game as high risk as well. He is not a slogger.

McCullum is a very good batsman but he did play as a Slogger to give NZ early momentum during the WC. It is a role in the team and not supposed to be an insult. It is different from being called a blind hack which is more demeaning.

I like hacks and sloggers.

Those with a brain and those who can adapt, have more than just midwicket hoicks.

Fakhar isn't the kind I can back. A dud. Haven't fixed his weaknesses in years. Easy to dismiss.
