For those who don't know Vitiligo is a skin condition that makes white spots and patches appear. Soon the person's whole appearance begins to change making them look very different. A close family member has just been diagnosed with it but does not want to undergo the UVB heat treatment. Does anyone here know anyone who has it and if there is a possible cure outside the aforementioneed?

Sorry to hear that. Don't know much about it but I don't think there's a cure beyond make up/skin camouflage creams. There's steroid based creams which inhibit its spread. Not sure about lasers etc Insha'Allah they work and someone on here can reccomend.

I know the younger, non fat, less nasty on twitter, Bhutto Zardari daughter has it.

My friend in school had it many years ago. It had just started to spread in the area behind his ears and a little on his neck. But he treated it immediately within the first month of its appearance and was able to get rid of it completely. Sorry I dont know which treatment he went for. I was too young to ask him details but its to show that something can be done about it and its not a hopeless case. Best wishes.

I wrote an extremely lengthy post and the tab got closed! So annoyed.

I've had vitiligo for 14 years and I'm finally getting the results from uv-b, I've documented the process and hoping to write a blog about it once my current treatment is over. I'm so annoyed that the tab got closed as I spent over half an hour writing it.

There a thoudands of treatments but none work other than uv-b and I've been having it for past 6 months with great results. Extremely happy with it. I'll write more about it soon.

It is not the treatments that are ineffective rather that ever human body reacts differently to it. Often a treatment works for one person but not the other. Similarly UVB treatment is not suitable for everyone like those with sensitive skin won't be able to tolerate it. The same can be said for other skin conditions like lichen planus. Here are some products for you to try from the UAE and Australia that has cured many sufferers. Good luck.

UVB treatment comes with a skin cancer risk as well.

I'm wondering if anyone has had vitiligo? It's basically when you're immune system starts attacking the pigment in your skin leaving white patches. I have a weird case of this from childhood but my condition is not too serious. I get occasional patches of white skin but they come and go. I'm wondering if any other ppers had this?

I've seen quite a few south asian people with this condition, I wonder there's some mutation among desis that give them a higher predisposition.

My maternal grandmother had it. The old myth is that it is caused by eating fish with milk.

It is not true but I still never risk the combination. If I know I will be eating fish, I don’t even drink tea in the morning.

It is ridiculous and irrational with no scientific evidence but I cannot help myself.

same man my parents will not let me eat fish and then use any dairy products. I researched this alot but there seems to be no correlation between fish and milk. It's mostly auto immune disorder but I still cant find out what triggers it for me.

apparently it's not genetic but I too have seen alot of south asians with it. I think another thing is it stands out more on brown people.

This isn't a myth actually but it doesn't happen with all types of fish. Nevertheless, there are few types of fish that, when combined with milk, can cause vitiligo.

Patches that come and go are more likely fungal skin infection, something like Tinea Infections. Vitiligo usually won't fade away.

Fish is warm milk is cold

When eaten together the form a negative reaction in your gut compromising your digestive system and weakning your immune system , weakned immune system leaves you open to get ill and infected with disease.

Yet there’s recipes in the West that combine fish with dairy products... there’s no concrete evidence of any backlash from the body. Even in Thailand they cook fish in coconut milk for eg.

But if it gives you peace of mind to not drink milk after eating fish, nothing wrong with that too. #JustSaying :hafeez

Same... If I realise it's been recent and I'm having one or the other I panic and normally avoid until next day.

I have prominent patches on my lips...not easily recognisable, mind

That's interesting mine was very minor and went away with a corticosteroid cream but I had it in my beard too and it caused the hairs to turn white so I was certain it was vitiligo.

That's not true though, I've had a fillet o fish with a milkshake many times.

Actually it is believed to be genetic according to newer studies and heredity plays a role. A lot of autoimmune disorders are genetic.

Most of these Desi old wive tales about medicine and human health are rooted in Ayurvedic "medicine' which tbf is no longer relevant in front of actual modern day medicine.

That's interesting I hope they can find a cure for it the first time i had it a few years ago i got a quarter size patch on my neck and everyone who interacted with me started staring at it.

It made me super conscious about it but alhamdulillah it went away but I can relate to the people who have this condition it destroys your self esteem especially if you're young.

There's no milk in coconut milk. :usman
Its just the pulp mixed with water like like almond milk, soya milk etc.

Lol my bad. Not a good example.

But I have heard of a European dish with fish served with some kind of cream / sauce that has dairy in it. Not tartar sauce, but I’m certain I’ve seen a dish like that.

Fish and milk thing is bollox, no scientific evidence whatsoever to prove this. A lot of vegetarians also have vitiligo and I have met plenty of white people that have vitiligo so it's not a colored people thing, it just shows more.

I had uv-b treatment for over a year and it cleared 90% of my patches excluding hands. It doesn't work on hands. I stopped my treatment as I had to travel abroad several times so I couldn't attend anymore, I had a tiny patch left on my neck over a year back and it has spreadout, covering almost half of my neck. Couldn't get back on the treatment due to Corona, I do have a uv-b lamp at home but I'm just too lazy to get on with it.

The first step to treating vitiligo is to live with it. Accept it as something you have, and don't let it affect your confidence. Being a desi it's almost impossible to do that, every time you meet a new desi person or someone you haven't met for a long time your vitiligo is the first thing they point it and this in the west. I can't even describe how bad it is in Pakistan. Literally everyone you see, from the fruit vendor to your pilot on the plane, everyone points it out and gives you their own cure for it. They think they're being caring but they're not they're just being complete a holes.

I had the same experience everytime you meet someone they have to point it out. I dont think people realize how rude it is.

Did you have this condition from a young age or did it occur randomly for you? Mine just came out of the blue.

I first noticed it when I was 16/17. It was a tiny dot on more forehead, then under my lip there was another tiny one. Initially it took 2/3 years to develop enough for others to notice and then it just took off. It got worse during the summer as my skin would get tanned and the patches would really pop out, at the same time I experienced alopecia. I was getting weird patches on my head and hair would complete disappear, as if I had shaved them. Everytime I'd go to get a hair cut the barber would point out a new patch. Because my hair were thick, I wouldn't be able to see it myself or notice as new patches appeared. I did spent little time trying to get a treatment for it and more time worrying about it. I finally decided that it is what it is, and I'm gonna live with it, I don't care whether if I'm gonna turn into a colourless person and totally hairless on my head. And this mindset alone was the cure for my alopecia, the bald patches went away and couple of years back I started my vitiligo treatment and Alhamdulilah my skin is much better as well. I had given up on both things and learnt to be happy with myself and thought to myself it is what it is.

Although it affected my confidence meeting new people, thankfully it didn't affect me with the people I already knew, people that always knew me hardly ever noticed it and never pointed it out. I can't imagine what hell my life would have been if I spent those years growing up in Pakistan and things it would have done to my confidence.

Wow thanks for sharing your story. I had a similar experience but not anywhere near the magnitude like yours. My case was very mild but it still affected my confidence very much.

I tried homeopathy and many unorthodox methods as well but I'm not sure what worked for me. The one thing I did notice was that once I stopped worrying about it, it seemed to heal on it's own.

apparently a lot of people get this condition after a episode of high stress or something very traumatic but I'm not sure because there's so many conflicting reports. I think you just have to accept it and not let it affect you too much.
