Voters will accept migrants from Canada but not India

Britons are unwilling to accept large increases in immigration in exchange for trade deals with key nations after Brexit, according to a poll.

Only about a third of people were prepared to accept higher levels of immigration from countries such as India and South Korea that have been singled out as offering economic opportunities for Britain. A majority supported more migration from Canada, Australia and the US but from nowhere else.

Official figures show net migration from outside the EU rising to the highest level for 14 years. It was at 261,000 in the year to last September while the figure from the EU had dropped to 57,000, the lowest in nine years.

It highlights a dilemma for the government which is pushing its view of a global Britain. The poll was part of a project being led by the British Foreign Policy Group and the Centre for Social and Political Risk at the Henry Jackson Society think tank.

Edward Elliott, a research manager, said: “Without an informed and truly national discussion that looks beyond the purely economic argument, the UK will struggle to address the public’s concerns around migration.”

Some 61 per cent of people were willing to accept higher levels of immigration from Canada, 60 per cent from Australia and 55 per cent from the US. Only 35 per cent said the same for India and South Korea. Only 9 per cent were willing to accept significantly higher levels from India, with similar percentages for South Africa and China.

The survey by BMG Research was based on a sample of 1,514 British adults aged 18 and over who were questioned online between January 8 and 11.

Despite all the talk (mainly from Indians) that Indians are considered to be very good at integrating in British society, seems Brits themselves don't really buy it. What would be the reasons do you think?

Personally I am not convinced either. Indians are culturally much different from Aussies and Canadians and it shows. Brits understandably can relate to their ethnic Euro stock brethren more readily. Go to Australia, Canada or the US and you will see pubs and bars which look similar to those over here, whereas Indians are still turning up on Masterchef cooking curries and selling mithai and saris in Southall.

A white canadian or american is not that different from the true native brit, while third world origin immigrant citizens will always remain the others. as a supporter of monoculturalism, feel happy about the result.

I mean who would want to see babbar khalsa and Kashmiris fighting with Modi fans in their home town. Results are no surprise.

Unbeknownst to the naive Brits, there are shiploads of Indians coming to the Canadian shores these days because the Liberals in government and they have made the immigration policy.... liberal. You go through an easy immigration process if you have a bachelors/masters in a good field and some 2-3 years of experience. You get a permanent residence card.... fast forward three years and you become full Canadian citizen.

Own goal by UK as usual.

I am happy, that is why I am publishing the article on PP. You may remember it was I who started two previous threads about Wembley and Southall which also have plenty of relevance to these findings.

I would like to know more details of this poll. Did they poll 33% of people such as this top west ham fan?

That young man is 17, if you look at the OP it says the BMG polled 1,514 Brits aged 18 and over.

Maybe the person who conducted the poll was related to him?

There may be issues with Indians but if Indians were white I am sure the figure would be different. They wont mind white people coming with saris and popadoms to Southall or to Windsor.

Indians/desis are culturally VERY different from the British and have very different values so it makes sense that the average would rather prefer an Anlgo-Canadian over an indian.

LOL Indians and Pakistanis are all the same for the westerners. They prefer people from countries where they are alike with similar cultural practices. Also asians are less desirable to them anyway.

Punjabi's make half of all Indian immigrants and UK is not an attractive destination for them in first place. Of-course desperate poverty ridden people will flock to countries like UAE, Malaysia. But given a choice, It's Canada, USA, Australia & NZ are most preferred.

Why would Canadians and Aussies go to UK? It's the other way around. Only Germany is attractive in Europe right now.

My perception was its the Scandinavian countries that offer the best opportunities and standard of living in Europe

You forgot the most important component, English proficiency. To be eligible, candidate has to reach a certain total score, for that good band score in English test like IELTS is required. Other factors are age, work experience, education.

Most of the Indians these days are coming as students, which is beneficial for local economy as International students spend 2.5x more tuition fee. Plus they have to study 2 years to get 3 years post graduate work permit. They they reach PR stage, 5-6 years of hardship and integration deserves a reward. You live in Canada, you know how expensive housing and life in general in Canada is. Students are paying through their nose in cities like Vancouver, with struggling rupee and lower middle class economic backgrounds its not easy. By the age of 24, these students spend 1/4th of their life in Canada. So Canadian government will prefer candidate who is Canadian educated, Canadian work experience with good command over English in mid 20s over some foreigner.

The British don't really care which part of India the immigrants hail from. Initially it might have been Punjab following partition, but these days there are plenty of south Indians and Sri Lankans coming over, I could be wrong, but I would guess that they would be less welcome than Aussies, Canadians and such also.
