"Want to move forward by replicating what Misbah & Younis used to do for the team" : Sarfaraz Ahmed

The two masters of Pakistan cricket - Misbah-ul Haq and Younis Khan - are no longer in the dressing room but their shadow looms large over the team as there is no substitute for experience.

However, the players led by Sarfraz Ahmed, are ready to fill the void and the skipper, in particular, sees a great opportunity in front of the youngsters to learn and gain during the series.

The Pakistan skipper is excited about going into the match with the young guns.

"The team's morale is very good. We have few young players. This is a good exposure for everybody. This is for the first time in many years that we have a very young team taking the field. The boys are very excited and looking forward to the series," the Pakistan captain told Khaleej Times after the practice session at the Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday.

Pakistan take on Sri Lanka in the first Test on Thursday.

Batsmen Haris Sohail and Usman Salahuddin, spin-bowling all-rounder Bilal Asif, left-arm spinner Mohammad Asghar and pacer Mir Hamza have yet to play in Tests.

How many of them will get their time in the sun remains to be seen but Ahmed is happy to have youngsters as options to choose from.

It's not just the youngsters who may get to make debut but the skipper, himself, is in new territory. "The first Test of any series is very important. This is a challenge for me as a captain as I am leading the side in this format for the first time. This is a different format for me and I am going to give my very best," he said.

Looking at the pitch, he exuded confidence.

"The pitch looks a decent one. We will have a closer look at it on Wednesday. There's a bit of grass on the pitch but it should serve as a good pitch for both the teams."

And with the temperature in Abu Dhabi hovering between 35 to 39 degrees, will heat be factor as many players were feeling the pinch after the training session.

The skipper, however, trashes such a notion and said by Thursday all players will be match-fit to last five days.

"The weather will be the same for both teams. It's a bit hot but we will get used to it in a few days. We have practiced today (Tuesday) and will have one more session on Wednesday, and the team would have acclimatised by then," the wicketkeeper-batsmen noted.

Weve had young teams before in the past but their are some clear differences in terms of how this crop of youngsters look a lot more hungrier, talented and willing to play with passion. Plus, the majority of them can actually field!

Sarfraz Ahmed, the Test skipper of Pakistan, wants the team to follow footsteps of the legendary duo of Younis Khan and Misbah Ul Haq in the series against Sri Lanka.

“Talks about Misbah Ul Haq and Younis Khan’s absence is not a distraction for us,” told Sarfraz Ahmed during the press conference ahead of Pakistan’s first Test against Sri Lanka.

“There is no doubt that they performed consistently for the team, but we want to move forward by replicating what they used to do for the team,” he said. “We should follow what they advised us, we will try to implement what we have learned from them.”

Sarfraz also clarified that the two best batsmen of the team, Azhar Ali and Asad Shafiq will bat at one-down and at fourth position respectively.

On a question regarding bowling combination, the skipper did not reveal it and told that it is yet to be finalized as the pitch is still not ready.

“We have not decided yet that whether we should go with two pacers and two spinners or three pacers with one spinner,” he told. “The pitch is a bit green at the moment and they are yet to get it done.”

The Champions Trophy winning captain believes that both teams are young and exciting, he is expecting an exciting series ahead.

“Both the teams ranked 6th and 7th at the moment. It is a challenging series for both of us, we will go into the ground with a very young side, I hope we will perform well in the series, it is an important series for me as a captain,” he said.

Talking about his role as captain in all three formats of the game, he expressed that he is feeling extremely honoured.

“It is a proud moment for me,” he said. “Playing for Pakistan is alone an achievement, captaining the team in all three formats of the game is a huge honour. I am excited about the series.”

He also urged the Sri Lankan team to come and play in Pakistan as it is a safe country.

“Come and play in Pakistan, it is a very safe country,” Sarfraz gave Sri Lankan team a message. “We hosted World XI recently and it was a very successful tour,” he added.

Abu Dhabi: Rival captains Sarfraz Ahmed and Dinesh Chandimal hope the recent two-match Test series between Pakistan and Sri Lanka will give them a new beginning.

Pakistan want to turn the page after the retirement of their two greats Younis Khan and Misbah-ul-Haq while Sri Lanka will look to lift their recent poor showing in the longer format.

Ahmed, who will lead Pakistan for the first time in Tests, is confident that his team will avail the first opportunity.

"Obviously, you have two great players who were playing consistently but you have to move on," said Ahmed on Wednesday.

"We have to remember the disciplines (of Younis and Misbah) and whatever they told us should be implemented on the field and start afresh," said Ahmed, who has already led Pakistan in one-day and Twenty20 international.

"This is my first opportunity as captain in Tests, so I will be up for that challenge and my players are also up to that and are very excited at this prospect."

Pakistan will use experienced batsman Azhar Ali on number three after he opened the innings in the last 12 months and will promote Asad Shafiq from six to four.

"We have strengthened our middle order and I am confident that Ali, Shafiq and Babar Azam will be up to the task to complement the batting," said Ahmed, who also has three Test hundreds.

Ahmed said his team will not underestimate the opponents.

"Their team looks good," said Ahmed of Sri lanka. "They have (Lahiru) Thirimanne and Kushal Silva back so both the teams are young and I think it will be a good series."

Chandimal believes Sri Lanka have the talent to improve after being thrashed 3-0 at home by India last month.

"From that last series we learnt a lot, especially we have done more work on our fitness and fielding. All we need to win is one game and everything will fall into place," said Chandimal, whose team has lost seven of their last nine Tests, including one against Bangladesh.

They also came close to losing to minnows Zimbabwe in July before pulling off a close win.

Chandimal said they can benefit from the retirement of Younis and Misbah.

"Actually we can have a very good advantage because the main two batsmen are not there in their batting unit but we will have to step up in our performance as a unit and we have something in our powers to do that."

If Sri Lanka win the series they will rise one place to sixth in Test rankings while Pakistan will go down one place to seventh.

Pakistan's series win will keep them on their current spot of sixth.
