Doing a poll here in a new thread since there are many people arguing that "Kalu" should actually not be considered a racism term. What do you think?

Depends on the context and manner in which the comment was said and made. If it was said lovingly then its not. If it was made with hatred and an attempt to insult, diss, humiliate then Yes. The BCCI should investigate the context

In this particular context, it seems friendly and also it seems more and more likely now that Kaalu was a nickname given to Sammy within tje Sunrisers friend circle and Sammy must have been aware of the same. Why make gye and cry now?

He didn't know what it meant. He thought it was an affectionate nickname meaning stallion or something.

Sammy's response and videos are available.

There can be number of theories but if a guy is called by a certain nick name especially when it can be considered racist and he doesnt like it upon knowing its meaning, its his right to be upset. I dont think anyone else can make a decision for him what he should like or not.

Things can only be called friendly if the so called friend believes them to be friendly. When and if a person doesnt like it upon knowing the full context, it cant be called friendly anymore.

It was not nice from Ishant. He should have used a better word.

I say it was racist.

More like colorist, but should avoid it anymore now, that's what even Sammy's new tweet is saying, if it can end up being racist avoid it.

Why wouldn't a person google though what he is being called , he even used it in a tweet wishing Laxman.

He didn't know the meaning apparently.

Yup, that's what I said above..he should had atleast googled it before using it in a tweet..
I'm guessing he thought it meant Stallion, which above tweet confirms , but pretty stupid of him as well.

What if they told him that Kalu means you are a strong ox? So he just took their word for it.

Yeah I corrected my comment.. that even opens up a bigger issue which he should say who told him that, which made him use it as a tweet, in the above case it seems like Laxman told him Kalu coz he saying remember dark Kalu? unless Laxman told him it means dark..

clearly shows he doesnt know meaning.

anyways i feel Ishant calling him that on social media is a bit too much but shows that they didnt have malice or racist intent most likely. Because if they did then Ishant wouldnt post on social media. However regardless it shows poor judgement and awareness on Ishant's part.

Finally. I still think it is wrong to call him that. The receiver of the term decides whether its abuse and racist so Sammy has all the right to demand explanations. I cant call a black friend the n-word even if I genuinely say it out of friendliness and fun. So same here.

Also reminds me of another incident. Once a private video was leaked where Price Harry called a Pakistani origin colleague 'our p@ki friend.' Anyone watching the video would know he didnt mean it in a racist way and was on good terms but he still got lot of flak.

I think its best to stay away since it normalizes such words. Lets assume that Sammy at the time knew the meaning and was fine with it. I would still say such words should be avoided because it normalizes. Someone like Ishant would think its ok to use such words and then might call Gayle that too who may not take it as lightly and that would create storm. It also takes away from a person's personality and is belittling. Is being black, Sammy's only distinguishing feature? Why have nicknames based on race or ethnicity anyway. I remember Afridi was also called 'Pathan' by the senior players when he first came in to the side. I found that messed up too.

Completely agree it's wrong to call anyone that I lived in south so it was easy not to be that offensive w.r.t being dark but yeah I was called "Maida Maavu" which refers to All purpose flour and it was a denoting person with fair skin but again in a negative sense and i laughed it off eventhough i disliked it , we live in such circumstances now that these things can be called out just like Abhinav Mukund has done as well.

It's good to see there being a conversation around it, irrespective of triggered Indian keyboard warriors people will be careful now (atleast when they are not anonymous)

Tell me why he would have to google it? He trusted the Indian players, I dont know if you ever played sports in a group environment before but all your team mates are your comrades. If they are with you 6-7 hours a day during a T20 tournament you expect them to be genuine. Good job shaming the victim.

Not shamin the person, questioning one aspect of him.. clearly are at fault the SRH Players whom he is not naming.. read above!

The amount of mental gymnastics certain posters are doing just to defend their fellow countrymen is hilarious to say the least. I wonder if you were all this active defending Sarfraz when he was caught on the microphone for his casual racism.

Think you havent read the news properly.

shaheen shah afridi insulted a press reporter regarding the said person's complexion. That was actually dished out moreso out of spite unlike this case. Either way it shouldn't be tolerated.

It isn't racist. But going upto someone and referring to them as black is very disrespectful. How would you like it if someone came upto you and said "Hey ****".

If Sammy finds it racist I can understand and won't hold it against him. But my personal opinion is that it isn't racist but it is stupidly and disrespectful.

Not really. The video was trimmed and taken out of context. Multiple journalists who were at the press conference denied that Shaheen was insulting the reporter regarding his complexion.

Sarfraz's example is perhaps a more apt one.

Not really. He clearly told the reporter to stand where he is visible because he apparently couldn't see him in the light.

If they referred to Mitchell starc as the gora would that be equally as racist
Something obviously needs changing from Indian school textbooks

Very poor from ishant. He should have been punished just as sarfaraz was. International cricketers representing India have no business using such words. Not sure if he can be punished in 2020 for what happened in 2014?

He should just apologize and close the matter. :inti

i don't think it was meant to degrade him but as a society if we think about it...the word is so deep rooted into our culture and the roots of it point to race/color in a negative tone. where dark color is looked at negativly including Pakistani and indian people that are darker tone. in fact people that are darker have complex issues and find ways to change their complexion. I personally would never use the word even for fun and games and that culture need to change in both countries.

Ishant Sharma is "still a brother" for former West Indies captain Darren Sammy, who holds "no grudges" against the India pacer for using a racially offensive word to address him in jest during their stint as teammates in the IPL. Sammy had alleged that during his time with Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2014 and 2015, he was often referred to as 'Kaalu' (Black), a racial slur the meaning of which he understood only recently. A picture posted by Ishant Sharma's official instagram page had addressed the West Indian by this word in the caption, lending credence to his charge.

An angry Sammy had initially sought an apology but softened his stand and asked for a dialogue instead.

"I don't hold grudges. I have spoken to Ishant Sharma. I consider him a brother like I did back in 2014 and '15 when playing for Sunrisers Hyderabad," Sammy told PTI in an interview facilitated by his Caribbean Premier League franchise St Lucia Zouks.

The two-time T20 World Cup-winning former captain made it clear that while he has moved on like Ishant, he wouldn't stop calling out anyone who uses racist slurs.

"But again if I find out that a possible racial slur is being used to describe me, no matter what time I find out, I will ask questions about it and that's what I did.

"I have spoken and voiced my opinion and I am moving on. All these issues started a conversation in the cricket fraternity. I have no regrets talking about that," he said.

Sammy, who played 232 international games for West Indies, has been very vocal against racism faced by blacks and people of colour after police brutality led to death of African-American George Floyd in the USA.

"I think it's just the way my mom raised me. You must stand up for the things you believe in whether injustice is being done to you or your fellow men. It's not just a movement because black lives do matter," one could gauge how strongly he felt about the issue.

"For years, we have been racially discriminated on the basis of our colour. We have gone through so much as a race, as people," he said.

"George Floyd was the straw that broke the camel's back. People had to raise their voice against the systemic injustice, police brutality against people of colour," the eloquent former Caribbean captain said.

When he was leading the West Indies, there were questions about his modest batting averages of -- 21 in Tests, 24 in ODIs and 17 in T20s -- apart from a bowling strike-rate of 73 plus in Tests and 61 in ODIs.

Sammy said captaincy is not always about delivering the maximum in terms of numbers.

"Leadership is about empowering others and that's the role I played in the later stages of my captaincy for West Indies and other teams that I led.

"Ideally, I would have liked to be a performer like some others but as leader you probably find less time to give yourself that attention," the St Lucia Zouks skipper said about his time in the international arena.

But doesn't he feel that a captain needs to be a performer to gain the trust of the dressing room.

"It varies, I believe, from team to team. It only helps that the leader is on top of that chart so that one can lead by example.

"But I will not let a lack of performance or two on my part deter me from speaking on team goals which will help the team go out there and win matches," said Sammy, who wants to win a silverware for St Lucia before retiring.

"I believe everything happens for a reason and I am now in a very happy place in my life. I have enjoyed playing cricket for the West Indies...the focus is on doing well for St Lucia Zouks as I am now closer to the end of my career and I want to finish on a good note.

A master at delivering quotable quotes, Sammy said he knows that he has played the game with pride and left a lasting impression for the kind of human being he has been.

"Let it sound cocky but I have played the game with a smile on my face. I am not bothered by how other people judge me. "With limited ability, I have achieved what my country, my friends and my kids can be proud of. I think I have been a leader there as well," he said.

I find it disgusting that the likes of Sharma and VVS were calling kalu in itself but what makes it worse is the fact that they didn't have the cojones to tell him what it meant. Racist cowards are the two words that come to mind.
