Was Pakistan’s hockey team of the late 70s and 80s period the GOAT hockey side?

Reading about how that team inspired Argentinas FIFA world cup win made me wonder if that Pakistani side was the greatest hockey side of all time. With the worldcup, olympics and champion trophy under their belt and a FIFA world cup winning manager thanking them for letting him study their tactics at training makes me wonder if there ever has been a better hockey side.

Old timers what is your opinion ?

What's with the Pakistani revisionism?. I think that Pakistan dominated squash for a time.

If you look at their record during that period, one would say yes.

So sad to see how the mighty have fallen.

Is this a number based theory or just one of those things based on some of the cuff quotes that come out once in a while.

Not a follower of hockey unless it is Olympics so would be interesting if there was some tangible stat to back this.

Having said that I do know enough to realize Pakistan was a gun hockey team in the 70s and 80s but never heard this G.O.A.T theory before

Well you can check the numbers too. It was the westindies cricket in the 70s and australia in the 90-2000 style dominance.
Check pak - india head to head or pak with anyother side at the time.

Growing up, I was a keen follower of the great Pakistan Hockey team those days. The team which won the 1982 World Cup in India was the greatest ever hockey team from any country. They won all the matches easily with big margins ( beat New zealand 12-3 ) . Same year they beat India 7-1 in New Delhi in Asian Games final.

Main reason was the fact that hockey popularity in the country was at its peak with and talent coming from every corner of the country, from small towns to big cities. And the manager/coach Brig Atif was very very committed and did a great job in motivating the players and kept them in great physical shape with his famous idea of making the team daily run on Karachi beach, on sand .

Team had great chemistry between them thanks to father like figure of Brig Atif guiding them. Ah, good old days , the glory days of sports in Pakistan .

I could not find the 1982 world cup or the Asian games final in New Delhi but I managed to find a good highlights video of 1982 Asia cup.

Pakistan seems to have been a gun team in this tournament. Look at the results (admittedly weaker teams except for maybe India), still absolutely dominating performance by Pakistan then -- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1982_Men's_Hockey_Asia_Cup

The same team beat India in Delhi 7-1 in the same year in Asian games final .

Most dominating nation of all time in the sport. Comparable to West Indies or Australia in cricket. 4 World Cup wins, still the highest number of WC wins in the sport.

Pakistan government suspends country's hockey federation, orders fresh elections

The PM is the patron-in-chief of the Pakistan Cricket Board and PHF and has the authority to dissolve both the bodies.

In yet another massive jolt to an already beleaguered Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF), the country's Sports Board (PSB) suspended the entire federation and has ordered fresh elections.

According to the PSB, a state-owned institution, the PHF was suspended with immediate effect on the orders of outgoing Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif, who apparently signed the order on his last day in office.

The PM is the patron-in-chief of the Pakistan Cricket Board and PHF and has the authority to dissolve both the bodies.

The PHF office bearers have so far maintained complete silence over the drastic measure taken by the PSB which has, however, retained the same selection committee and team management of the senior and junior teams so that their participation is guaranteed in the upcoming Asian Games.

PHF president, Brigadier (retd) Khalid Sajjad Khokar got elected again for a third term early in 2022 after holding elections which the PSB refused to either recognise or ratify.
