Nawaz Sharif was a right-hand batsman who made a duck in his only appearance for Railways against PIA in 1973-74. He later served two terms as Pakistan's prime minister, firstly between November 1990 and July 1993 and then from February 1997 to October 1999 when he was ousted by a coup led by General Pervez Musharraf. He was subsequently banned from holding public office for 21 years and exiled to Saudi Arabia.

I never knew about this so I thought I would share. Couldn't find a thread on it.

What went wrong? Anyone with more info on this career would be appreciated.

p.s mods please move to cricket if you think it is. I don't. :))

:))) is this for real?

Just checked and it is. I wonder what kind of batsman he was?

Another talent wasted. If only PCB gave him a run of 10-15 games.

I love how the writer of the article nonchalantly puts that in :))

Another example of the PCB ruining a youngsters career. No doubt he could have been a youngsta legend...

Talent Wasted :(

Nawaz > Imran, Miandad, Inzi

if PCB would have given him a chance, Pakistan would have been in peace since.

I thought the same. :))) As you do..

There was a thread on this a couple of years back, I couldn't find it either. Maybe it got delete for getting too political. :zoni

He impressed in a charity match in Zimbabwe during his first tenure as PM.

Still got it.

He made his debut when he was CM of Punjab!against mighty Windies and opened the batting. Survived first ball (bouncer) , clean bowled on second.

as per above clip that was a side match against WI
and NS opened against WI and batted without any guard and helmet.

Not sure how true it is but I heard Nawaz Shirif was actually a decent batsman and scored lots of runs at Lahore Gymkhana while playing club cricket...

Imran Khan once mentioned they tried to stop him from batting because they feared for his safety since he was nowhere near the level required to be a professional, so it was to much relief to him that he got out without any scares.

Piers Morgan tried to do something similar more recently against Brett Lee and that was stupid as well because he was left with several bruises.

I think the only way Sharif managed to play in this game was via nepotism through the connections he had.

Rumour has it that he was once clean bowled with middle stump cartwheeling but stood his ground and refused to walk, accusing the bowler (Imran K) and umpire (Saqib N) of 'saazish' behind that dismissal - he stood there demanding to know 'mujhe kyoon nikalaa' , must be the khalai makhlooq (aliens) sponsoring it all.

I wonder if there is someone related to Nawaz Sharif playing cricket right now?
