Was the defeat to Pakistan in the 2017 Champions Trophy final India's worst ever in ICC tournaments?

Pakistan defeat India comprehensively in 2017 CT final. Pakistan won by 180 runs while India only scored 158 runs. So India was not able to score even half of the runs required. This was truly of biblical proportions and can be compared with David vs Goliath considering Pakistan was 8th ranked and India was 2nd ranked team.

My question is has India lost worst before in ICC tournaments than this defeat?

I think, in 1979 or 1975, there was a 10 wicket loss & probably a similar margin defeat in that famous 36* (60 overs) match. IIRC, Ammis's individual total of 170 out of 333+ was higher than Indian team total.

India lost the 2003 world cup final by 140 runs so yes this one is the worst and embarrassing.

How about the group game against Australia where they rolled us for 125 or so? That was pretty bad.

No the lost to Bangladesh was. We lost to minnow and got kicked out of WC in the first round. That was our worst defeat in an ICC event.

really? I thought Bangaldesh has never kicked out India from a tournament and thats why India does not respect Bangladesh.

Nopes you didn't got out from WC 2007 coz of bangladesh u guys still had chance to qualify after beating Lanka but still :P

Bermuda had to beat Bangladesh and we knew that wasn't going to happen. Sri Lanka wasn't going to lose to Bermuda and Bangladesh either. That loss pretty much sent us home.

This has to be the worst because this was a high stakes game, also considering that india were the favorites, the defending champs and billed with a 3/4th probability of winning against Pakistan.

I thought our defeat to Australia in the 99 final was pretty bad as well. We just capitulated that day in a massive fashion. They would have won by ten wickets..

Yes India lost to England by 202 runs in the 1975 WC which included Gavaskar's infamous 36 off 174 balls lol

Definitely the 202 run loss to England in 1975, with Gavaskar hitting 36 not out in 60 overs!

Mind you, Gavaskar wouldn't have been dismissed by the balls that took out Kohli, Rohit and Dhawan.

It was not a direct kick :))) but it made game against SL must win game in 2007 WC. Eventually India lost to SL.

An anlogy: In WC2003 at Centurion India defeated Pakistan but Pakistan still had chance to qualify but failed to do so because I beleive it lost to England next game or was it Aus I do not remember.
So it was an indirect kick instead of penalty kick. :)))

I'd say the loss to SL in 96 was their worst ever in ICC tourneys. It might not have been as comprehensive in terms of the margin but it was pretty humiliating the way they collapsed in front of a packed Eden Gardens.

Not worst ever but definitely the biggest upset ever not only in Indian cricket but history of World Cricket, mainly bcz of reputation

Nope the game against India was a must win because it was their 2nd last match. Last match was against Zim and not Eng/Aus. If they lost to India the NRR reqd to win against Zim would become too high which it did. In any case the match against Zim was a washout.

Nowhere close. The SF loss to England in Mumbai at the 1987 WC was easily the worst. That WC was ours for the taking. We had England on the mat (restricted to 235 in 50 overs) but the batsmen couldn't take us home. That one hurt!

It was the very first WC outside England, and winning the final at home in front of 100,000 fans at Eden Gardens would have been awesome. Had to wait 24 more years before winning the WC at home.

I think its right up there. From the margin of victory, to who was the opposition, to the ranking of the opposition
This was will sting for a while.

This was the worst ever defeat for India by the hands of old enemy infact its the worst ever in a ICC final even Pakistan's 99 Lords defeat was not bad compared to it

180 runs defeat inside 30 over's and the opposition only lost 4 wickets that's massive

It was like

AC Milan 5-0 Inter

Real Madrid 8-0 Atleti

Man U 6-0 Man C

:133: :)))
