So we have royally messed up our chances in playing test championship for 2021-2023 cycle. We had one of the easiest draws going into this cycle with a lot of cricket being played at home and away tours were as easy as they come (Ban, SL and WI). Yet today we sit here where we did not manage to win in SL and WI and were defeated by Aus at home and similar outcome is now predicted against England.

The management of Pakistan cricket needs to take responsibility and hold itself accountable for ensuring we deliver or yield better results for 2023-2025 cycle. It is important to note that our core players like Babar, Rizwan, Imam and Shadab would have been either at their peek or just started to see decline in their numbers. So its important we give their long-term replacements enough time to take over from them when the time comes. Whilst player management is extremely important so is strategies and think tank.

Think tank / Strategies
We have been nothing but abysmal for a long time now when it comes to think tank or game understanding. If I remember correctly the last time when our think tank were appreciated was back in Misbah era when he delivered the series whitewash to England in UAE or when we won that 4th innings chase in dying lights against Sri Lanka. In those games our management actually had a plan that paid off post Misbah era our plans are non-existent or repetitive. Rather than being pro-active we are always reactive and in most cases we simply keep on repeating same plan regardless of opposition or conditions.

Whilst our current think tank is a complete failure and their attitude is a massively unprofessional its quite obvious we need a change. Ideally PCB needs to shortlist potential candidates and take a long-term decision post NZ series. We have PSL after NZ series and then IPL so potentially we have a break which will help the new management settle down. Ideally PCB would want strategist in here rather than big names. PCB needs to go back and find someone like Lawson who can help drive strategical plans for this team.

Player management
PCB made a joke of itself in recent T20 with 2 of our main players breaking down in world cup games. Shaheen breaking down in finals itself was a massive blow as well. Player management has to be on top of PCB's agenda. We have seen PCB throwing Haris Rauf in tests with absolutely no credentials shows our attitude in preserving our talents.

Our domestic cricketers need to be awarded for their performances whilst our players playing all formats should be preserved and treaded carefully. We need to have back-ups in place for players that play all formats to ensure the transition is not difficult once our all format players are gone.

Our all format players are Babar, Rizwan, Shadab and Shaheen. This is the core of our setup. We need to have back-ups in place to take responsibility from these players when the time comes. We need to empower players like Imam, Shafique, Nawaz and Naseem so that when the time comes they can step up to take mantle from our core players.

We also need to have 2 different setups in mind for our test team while playing in Asian conditions and for SENA conditions.

Reserves: Its extremely important that we treat our reserve players with extreme respect and ensure they get sufficient playing time which means ensuring they get players into county or ensure the teams play full QEA trophy.

Very important reserves for next cycle are Hurraira, Kamran Ghulam, Rohail Nazir / Haseebullah, Hasnain and domestic spinner like Zafar Gohar. These young players are our next likely core for a test line-up hence they need to start gelling them into our team slowly but steadily.

I would definitely play Hurraira over Shan in asain conditions 100%

In SENA I will bat Babar at 3 with Saud and Kamran at 4 and 5.

Shadab should be replaced by Gohar.

If mubasir Khan has one more decent season, he could be a great option for asian conditions.

Imam has no business playing tests.

He has played a significant amount of tests now and is yet to play a single innings of value. Only in the team because he is friends with Babar.

Kamran Ghulam will be my pick over Masood.

Pakistan need this as their middle order:

3. Babar
4. Saud
5. Kamran

Don’t care where they play. After a long time, we have an opportunity to build a strong middle order core since we lost the great middle order of Younis, Yousuf and Inzimam

Very well said. This guy is a complete fraud.

A batting lineup of Imam, Shafique, Babar, Saud, Rizwan etc. is okay. You can add someone like Huraira or any other young player to the mix. It is not earth shattering but you can’t expect more from the worst batting nation in history.

The real worry is the bowling department. Shaheen is the only world class fast bowler but his workload needs to be managed.

Naseem is the worst Test pacer in the world, Rauf is a poor man’s Wahab who will not dare to play Test cricket again & Hassan Ali is finished. The likes of Faheem are totally harmless & Hasnain is not good enough either.

Pakistan needs to find 2-3 high quality fast bowlers immediately to support Shaheen otherwise this team will be no better than West Indies in this format.

Your concern about fast bowlers is true for Sena conditions but being an average team Pakistan should first try and dominate at home by identifying a good crop of spinners/spin all-rounders

Some happy memories

We need 5 bowlers to do better in test cricket. Our batting will always be fragile but it is our bowling that mostly lets us down. As much as I am disappointed with Faheem Ashraf, he may still have a role in red ball.

My current bowling attack for most conditions in the world would be:

1. Shaheen Afridi (to attack with new ball)

2. M Abbass (to keep one end tight)

3. Ihsanullah (to use in short 3 over bursts)

4. Abrar Ahmed (i think he is the best spinner we have currently)

5. Faheem Ashraf (to keep one end tight and give other bowlers breathing space)

Pakistan will never be a force again in test cricket as our bowlers especially do not have the hunger for it anymore.

I agree. We have historically done well in tests on the back of our bowlers picking up 20 wickets. In order to pick 20 wickets in SENA conditions we would need equally equipped bowlers to do so. My list would be as follows for SENA matches.
1. Shaheen Shah (world class new ball bowler)
2. Naseem Shah (someone for short bursts of bowling fast)
3. Ihsanullah (pace and bounce our most important weapon in SENA)
4. Hasan Ali / Faheem Ashraf (bowler for long spells being economical)
5. Shadab Khan (to keep it tight and not leak runs like Yasir Shah)

For Asian conditions the list would be slightly varied
1. Shaheen Shah
2. Hasan Ali / Faheem Ashraf
3. Abrar Ahmed
4. Shadab Khan
5. Mohammad Nawaz (if pitch is good for pacers then Ihsanullah steps in his place)
