Azhar Ali at a press conference today after returning from Australia:

"It was a disappointing series for us in Australia. We are a proud cricket nation and our pride is hurt by these losses"

"Two innings defeats in Australia are not acceptable and there are no excuses for that"

"I believe we did our best preparation and went with positive intent but unfortunately sometimes, results aren't according to your expectations"

"The way we picked a young bowling attack and won the toss and batted in the 1st Test showed a lot of intent from us, but unfortunately we were playing catch up. When we played well, we couldn't capitalise on that and when you don't avail your opportunities in Australia, it's not easy to make a comeback"

"Some positives from this tour, Babar Azam played brilliantly and Rizwan played well. The batsmen showed they can make runs in Australia"

"Our bowling attack was young and it couldn't perform according to expectations, but still, the world is talking about them, that they have pace. With a bit more experience, they have a great future for Pakistan"

"The players fought despite being behind in the match, if you look at the 2nd innings scores, we fought but unfortunately, it's difficult when you fall behind the game in Australia"

"A few things we need to work on. As batsmen, we are getting starts but we aren't developing match-winning partnerships. Batsmen who made runs couldn't convert that into match-winning innings. We couldn't take new ball wickets which is important in Australia, we couldn't control the run-rate so these are a few things we need to focus on in the series against SL"

"It's a great thing for us that there is a Test match in Pakistan after 10 years with SL bringing their full side. We will have to play very good cricket to defeat SL and we will try our best in between to freshen our minds and get back on track for the Test Championship"

"The bowling attack is young and has shown promise. Naseem Shah bowled well in 1st Test and showed that he has a bright future. Shaheen Shah has improved, he was bowling with consistency. He did a lot of work on his fitness and on his bowling. It doesn't look good in the wickets column but there is promise showing and they will be much better in the near future"

"It's not that the ball isn't coming onto my bat or that I'm struggling at the crease, or my feet aren't moving. I am aware that I need to score runs, all the players, captain or others at this level, nobody can survive with performances and I realise that and I'm working hard. I'm feeling good in the nets and in the match also"

"When someone is batting at 6 rpo in a Test match then no matter how aggressive you are, you have to come on the back foot a bit and wait for a wicket. You have to try different things when a partnership is formed"

"We thought of our best combination in the first Test where I would open because we had a performing middle order but Haris was struggling a bit so we gave a chance to Imam. It's not a problem for me to open or #3"

"If you look at any team, you will see 2-3 players with knee problems. It's true that since I had this knee problem, my form hasn't been the same but you can't say it's only because of that. I pass all the fitness tests, I take part in training sessions, I sprint while batting so I don't think that it's because of the injury. Sometimes your form or luck doesn't allow you to to make runs. Many players have knee surgeries and continue playing. If there are any fitness issues, PCB's medical staff will determine that"

"Regarding reports that I am going to settle down in England: Senior journalists should try to confirm news before saying it on TV. If someone says such things on TV about someone's personal life, it should be authentic. My son was studying in England since 3 years and I even brought him back to Pakistan. I don't have any business or anything outside Pakistan. I had a 1 year contract with Somerset which is finished now and I don't know of any future contracts at the moment. So before spreading such news, people should confirm it"

"We had clear plans against Warner but we are guilty of not executing the plans properly in the 1st match. We allowed him to gain confidence and he's such a player that when he's confident, he bats well. We hit our plans in the 2nd Test but he countered them easily. In the 1st Test, he was on 150 and we executed our plans so he made only 2 runs in 1 hour. Sometimes you plan but you fail to execute"

"As a batting unit, we need to think about our shot selection which wasn't so good. We were even batting well at times and collapsed. So we have to realise that if we have a partnership, we need to prolong it, or build a new partnership if a wicket has fallen. We had sessions where we lost wickets in clumps and the manner of losing wickets, I think our shot selection wasn't very good"

"When I accepted captaincy, I considered everything and I said that I will have a different mindset this time. I will try to implement my plan and there is no element of worrying about my captaincy going or me being removed from the team"

"This is Pakistan's team, if you can't perform as a player, how long can you survive in the team? And same if you can't perform as a captain. So I am not worried about these things. I am confident and have confidence in my team that we are going to go forward positively. We need to develop a culture in the team where the fear factor goes away. The more you think about being dropped etc., the more it affects you"

"We have talked about selection and the team will be announced tomorrow"

"I played 5 FC matches this year, I saw almost all the teams and saw their batting and bowling. When we selected a team for Aus, we considered everything and selected the best possible bowling attack which we felt can perform at international level currently, and similarly with batsmen. Domestic cricket is very important, and we also have to look at the requirements for international cricket. We have to judge whether players are ready for the international level or not. Sometimes you have less options so you have to take risks, sometimes you have many options and you take the best one"

"I have only heard of one captain who picked the team according to his own wishes and that was Imran Khan. Now things have changed, there is a selection committee and a process. We discuss things in meetings"

"Yasir has been our #1 bowler and has won us a lot of Tests in the last 5 years. Spinners never find it easy in Australia, even Lyon didn't get wickets till the last innings. Yes he has better control because he is used to those conditions. Not picking up new ball wickets is a big factor because you can't build pressure on the other team"

"We thought Yasir will be effective at Adelaide because the ball was turning but they attacked him and he was under pressure throughout. Sometimes if you're struggling, you can get support from the other end which helps you to get in a good frame of mind again but unfortunately we couldn't take wickets at any time to put them under pressure"

"My performances weren't good here or in SA. The conditions in SA are different, they are tough for batsmen but in Australia if you get set, you can make big runs. But unfortunately, that didn't happen. I know I am short of runs. I think I am batting well and I am in good touch but I need to convert that into runs. I don't think this is related to captaincy. I have played 75 Test matches, if I am still under pressure now then there is no use of all that experience"

"Imam played in tough conditions in SA and gave some good performances. He has been playing ODI cricket and the way he was batting in the nets, he deserved to get a go"

"Abid Ali is one of our top FC performers and he is in our plans, whenever we get a chance we will play him and he will hopefully play for a long time for Pakistan. We trust him as a very good opening batsman"

"We are playing at home in completely different conditions to Australia. We have to quickly adapt now, we were practising according to Australia and now we have to adapt. We are playing our 1st Test in Pakistan in a long time, this is my first Test at home. So we need to quickly figure out how we are going to win here, we have an idea about how to win matches in Dubai and we have to do the same here. Hopefully we will have a good wicket which suits our side and on which we can get results. We have discussed and made plans according to the conditions in Pindi and Karachi"

If he had any pride or self-respect, he would have dropped himself and retired.

Bring Sarfraz back. This one Misbah trained to lose with grace.

One of the most impotent tour I have ever seen.

lmao, it feels like Azhar Ali is purposely trying humiliate his countrymen even further

:)) :)) :))

Mickey Arthur has taught Babar Azam well with how to respond to a poor outcome.

Doesn't Misbah has anytime or any brain to make new phrase instead of copy paste from Arthur's statement?

This is the same guy who copied Misbah Ul Haq’s push up celebration. He doesn’t really have a personality of his own

Pakistan needs to move on from Azhar now. His short peak period of 2013-2017 is well over now, and at the age of 34, he is not going to improve from here.
He was never captaincy material to begin with, and the only reason he is still in the team as a player is the presence of Misbah.
He most probably doesn't have any say in the selection matters and doesn't inspire any confidence while batting or leading on the field.
A player who made most of his limited abilities, never averaged 50+ in Tests, and will be remembered for a few notable performances during his peak (200 vs Australia, 300 vs WI, Sharjah chase), but nothing much apart from that.
That being said, I believe he is one of the few selfless players we have at the moment, retired from ODIS when he knew he doesn't deserve a place in the team. It's time to say goodbye though.

What else would the poor guy say? I hope Pakistan blanks Sri Lanka so at least he can captain the team without any distractions.

Hawkeye thought we weren’t going to continue hearing this?

Wait, I thought we were done with this phrase now the "dark Mickey Arthur era" was over.

People like you and Misbah in charge are the reason why I look forward to seeing Pak lose each and every game or to check out any fascinating facts about any losing streaks we have.

Proud cricketing nation ? used to be but guys like Misbah and you Azhar Ali have let us down and ashamed, not proud anymore.

Unless he's booted out, we're going to hear this copy/paste quote for 6/7 years after every series as the seniors think they can all play on till their mid forties.

People like Misbah ul Haq and now Azhar Ali are the main reason behind the non existent brand value of the Pakistani team.

He has just betrayed that he is far older than his official age.
MMHS wrote several years ago of Azhar’s son being suspiciously old. And today Azhar has confirmed that he went to university in England three years ago.

Overseas students can apply via UCAS if they will be 18 when their course starts.

That would make Azhar’s son at least 21 now.

Which by simple logic makes Azhar at least 37 years old, rather than “about to be 35”.

So for those Misbah loyalists awaiting an upturn in Azhar’s batting outside Asia, it appears that he is at least two years older than the next oldest batsman in world cricket, which is Ross Taylor, who is due to retire from Tests in six weeks.

Who is the 21 year-old of the two as per you?

Maybe he has more kids.

Checked. He has one more son, who's one year old.

So the 21 year old must be one of the two in the pics.

I think this kid excuse was really pointless. His son must have been in a boarding school but I think even for that you need to be either very rich or some kind of kinship with the sixth form school.

Although Azhar’s form has been down in international tours. I think he can still score runs in Pak or UAE. It was the right decision to appoint him captain, and he should be given a chance to build his own team. Misbah and Waqar need to back off and stop controlling selection and everything, give the new generation space to lead their team their way.

This is why other teams give some time before involving legends back in the coaching staff. Things need to evolve!

Lol if his son is 21 then he is the youngest looking 21 year old ever. I know the pictures are a couple of years old but at most the older kid in the picture looks 12.

Pakistan were completely outperformed in Australia last month, suffering heavy defeats in T20Is as well as in the Tests, prompting Azhar Ali to declare "our pride has been hurt".

Pakistan were defeated 2-0 in the three-match T20I series, and they suffered big margins of defeat in the Tests as well, with innings defeats in Brisbane and Adelaide.

Ali, the Test captain, said Pakistan's pride took a beating in Australia. "We are a proud cricketing nation, and definitely our pride has been hurt," he told the reporters on Friday, 6 December. "We did prepare to [the] best of our abilities, we went there with positive intent. But unfortunately, sometimes results don't come as per your expectations."

Pakistan had opted for a young bowling attack in the Tests, calling up 16-year-old Naseem Shah and 19-year-old Musa Khan. But David Warner and Marnus Labuschagne were on song and laid bare their inexperience.

Despite that, Ali said the experience would hold the players in good stead for the future. "The bowling attack was young and couldn't perform as expected, but still the world is talking about them today," he said. "They have pace, and with little bit more experience, they will be great for Pakistan in the future."

We went there with positive intent but unfortunately sometimes results don't come as per your expectations.
The captain himself struggled in the Tests, scoring 35, 5, 9 and 9 in his four outings. He conceded he's not been the same since returning from a knee injury. "It's true that after knee injury, my form is not the same," said Ali. "But I passed all the fitness test, I do all the sprinting and it's [injury] not the only reason.

"As far as I am concerned, it's not that ball is not coming onto my bat or when I am at the crease my footwork is not working. Unfortunately, it's not working. I know I need runs. [Be it the] captain or any other player, nobody can play without giving performance."

Pakistan's next assignment is at home against Sri Lanka, an important one as it will signal the return of Test cricket to Pakistan after a decade.

"The next series is against Sri Lanka, which is a momentous occasion for all of us, all players will be playing their first test match in Pakistan," he said. "Sri Lanka is bringing their full-strength side and we have to play very good cricket to beat them."

The two-Test series begins in Rawalpindi on 11 December.

Losing is becoming an all too familiar habit and a bad habit.

Too many average cricketers around at the moment.

No guts, determination or the willingness to improve.

Agreed, don't think the players are hurting as much as he's making it out to be. They got a free holiday to Oz at the end of the day.

Judging by some of the comments on these boards, it seems some fans have embraced mediocrity as well.
Sadly, things are looking bleak.

So when I went to an all important project launch in New York for 3 weeks , I did not take my wife with me. Because for me having project go live was more important thing to do, that would give me more credibility and my clients would appreciate my efforts and would love to work again...
Eventually project went very well. We as a team discussed lots of things, and solved it without distraction of taking families out to some beaches/museums, etc.

On the other hand, our players and their families..

I am not against families during tours. But if it is important one then players should be focussing more on it, where they can group together, and discuss more and more. In one of the Kohli's interview, he mentioned before the game he plans his innings very well, which bowler to target, and all this happen after taking team's views into account.

But for our players, it was just a family picnic...!

We fans have gone very low when people are talking about bringing back Akmal bros...some one will say they would be better than the current one. I would say only +3 runs better, and that too after playing for Pakistan for almost a decade..

Misbah started this trend, aging players don;t care much about the country anymore, after badly failing in series after series they stick around and don't just go away or retire. Sadly in selectors like Inzi and Misbah, they always have their buddies to support them.

Maybe Azhar's been made captain for his oratory skills or copy/paste.

My hunch is 40+, because in South Asian villages, you might see boys marrying at 15-16 rarely, but Azhar comes from an educated family, and it's actually illegal to get married at under age - if I take 18-19 as his marriage age........... you know.

You did post several years ago that Azhar had a much older son, didn’t you?

Or am I suffering delusions? :)

I suspect that his decline outside Asia is because he’s not about to be 35, he’s actually the same age at which Misbah and Younis retired.

No, I knew he had a son, officially 15 years younger than him. That unfortunate kid is a son of celebrity cricketer, hence he didn't have the fortune to be born as 6 years old, stuck with his biological age .... otherwise, had he been a cricketer, would have played for PAK U16 now.

I knew it!

So Azhar Ali DOES have a much older son, which fits because in his press conference last week he said that he had sent him to be educated in England.

Which you don’t do with toddlers.

So if he was sent to do the “sixth form” at an English school, like Imran Khan, then his dad Azhar Ali is at least 38 or 39 years old.

But if it was university, then Azhar Ali is at least 42 years old now.

Hopefully we don't get a comment like after the inevitable happens. We hate losing yet you don't perform.
