"We didn’t consider Ind our enemies but instead the best team to play best cricket against": F Zaman

KARACHI: Fakhar Zaman has had quite the meteoric rise. From being decidedly second choice going into the tournament to emerging from it as a national hero after a match-winning century in the final against arch-rivals India of all teams, Zaman has seen his star rise from virtual unknown to household name and national hero.

It could have all been so different, though, had Jasprit Bumrah not overstepped when he had Zaman caught behind off a no-ball, with the left-hander having made only three runs at the time.

“I had many plans in my mind for the final against India. I went out with the mindset that I will be doing my best in this match and will help Pakistan win the match,” he said. “A Pakistan-India game is a stage where if you do well, you’ll be hero.”

And Zaman knew he needed to deliver on the biggest stage of them all. “I was playing my first match against India so I had to do more than the others, and my consistent performances before that game meant the team was relying on me.”

For a few seconds, all that was replaced with despair as he nicked the ball into the welcoming hands of MS Dhoni. “When I was caught behind, my heart sank,” he said. “I was stunned and slowly started making my way back to the dressing room with all my hopes and dreams crushed. I kept thinking how could I lose my wicket here, I was supposed to score big, not get out on three.”

Fate, though, was on Zaman’s side. “When the umpires stopped me, it was like a new hope,” he said. “It felt like a new life. I thought to myself if this is a no ball then today is surely my day.”

It was a no ball, and it was Zaman’s day. But Zaman gave India no chance after that reprieve.

“I knew I had more responsibility on my shoulders after being given another chance to guide my nation to a much-needed victory,” he added.

Zaman’s feeling of despair soon became India’s feeling of despair and by the time the Mardan-born was dismissed for 114 off 106 balls, the game was well and truly in Pakistan’s hands.

“I just went hard after their bowlers like I do in domestic and club cricket,” he said. “I was given a lot of confidence by my teammates, especially by skipper Sarfraz Ahmed, veteran Shoaib Malik and opening partner Azhar Ali.”

Righting previous wrongs

Zaman admitted that, while it doesn’t get bigger than a Pakistan-India game, the Men in Green were doubly determined to make amends for their crushing defeat at India’s hands in the opening game of the tournament.

“We had that first game in mind and wanted to avenge that defeat with our performance,” he said.

However, he insisted there was no animosity between the players. “On the day we played good cricket and we didn’t consider them as our enemies but instead the best team to play your best cricket against,” he said. “India’s players also played cricket with great spirit and I hope the match helps develop goodwill between the two nations.”

Zaman has vowed he will continue to live up to the expectations that have now been placed upon his shoulders. “I will be training doubly hard now in order to improve my skill and fitness levels in order to win more titles for Pakistan.”

Zaman is the best example of fearless cricket....
Guy has got a lot of technical flaws in batting but his attitude makes up for it

That's a fantastic statement to make.

Brilliant batsman, I hope he keeps thriving and becomes one of the best in LOIs.

Sarfraz should learn from Azhar and Fakher how to speak in the media. These two make him look like a kid.

Send this to Indian media. They treated Pakistan only as an enemy nation throughout the campaign and they were quite strongly supported by many ex-cricketers in spreading the hate. In fact this has been going on for quite some time. It is nice to see Pakistani cricketers have enjoyed their victory thoroughly but not at the expense of the opposition's respect. Keep spreading love guys and Inshaa Allah you will be rewarded in the best possible way by the almighty. Hopefully India will learn from this in future and not behave like politicians from the hate mongering RSS.

This part stood out the most to me.

It shows what a positive attitude upcoming youngsters have. He has already achieved what many wish to achieve for decades. But still there is no sign of being lazy, no sign of being complacent. It shows that trusting in the youngsters is the way to go rather than hoping for the TTF's to improve.

At least the new batch of upcoming young players show a hunger for success in their game which hasnt been seen since a long time.

Hasan Ali first said something similar, now Fakhar. It is great to see how they are level headed despite some of the non-sense the Indian media and pundits have said. Indian media should learn some humility from these guys.

His primary job is to win matches for Pakistan as captain. Not to take classes on how to speak as haters will always find problems. Once we have a dominant winning team (top 1-2 in world) then we can think about these secondary issues.

P.S: There is nothing wrong in how he speaks infact he represents a common middle class/lower middle class Pakistani which make most of our population.

I agree as long as he is delivering on the pitch it really doesn't matter although I would like him to slow down his speech slightly.

If only the fans had that mentality...
Quit the whining man and get over it. Indians whining 24/7 on social media after the CT loss is a joke really. Funny how none of you made such noise when it was YOUR media and YOUR fans making cringe-worthy statements before the final. Statements which can never be justified. Pakistan smashed your team to the next universe, so this reaction and every other jubiliant reaction is justified. The kind of filth us Pakistani fans had to listen to right before the final, from your ex-cricketers, fans or every corner of the media, deserved this response.

Now stop crying in almost every thread since its getting boring now. You should have said something when your fellow countrymen, some of whom haven't had the guts to visit this forum since then btw, were coming out with rubbish before the match. Since you didn't, you have zero credibility in my eyes.

Unless you saw this interview live or a recording, you have no idea how he expressed himself in reality

I was talking about both sides. Calm down.

Also, the statements made by Pakistani media before and after the match were much, much worse than anything the Indian media said.

Wow you really didn't just say that. Best to ignore trolls like you. Keep on whining.

And no, nowhere have you even implied that you are talking about both sides.

I hope he continues to be as humble as he now and continue performing for Pakistan and doesn't loose his focus.

This is the best team I have seen like in ages.
