"We didn't set an example on corrupt cricketers so these things kept on happening" : Shahid Afridi

Speaking on a video call:

"I had a plan to rest after PSL but when I saw the lockdown, I thought that if we all sit at home then who will go out and help others? My family was also stopping me and friends told me to stay at home and sit but I was worried about the poor people in society and labourers etc.

"Regarding matches vs India, I have always said that Pakistan needs to have better relations with India. "Relations with India should be better, cricket has always brought Pak and Ind closer. I agree with what Shoaib Akhtar said, we should have matches but for that, it's a big challenge to organize them. Then we don't know where they would be held, we don't know if India wants to play. We want to play India. It's difficult in this situation because of the Modi govt., there are negative things coming from them. Pakistan have always been positive but they also have to take a positive step.

"When PSL was finished and PCB announced that, I said that PCB should end it here. It's not easy to organize it again and to bring everyone back for knockouts. We don't know the situation for the future and we need to look forward. It's not that because I'm from Multan Sultans and we're number 1 but I think we need to finish PSL for this year and look to the next one.

"A lot of cricketers have helped, from India Yuvi and Bhajji supported us and cricketers, celebrities, film stars have helped us. Some players who I won't name also helped us. Pakistan is our land and we have to help each other and contribute.

"PCB will need to give packages to those cricketers who are struggling after department cricket finished, even other cricket. Their house costs were being sustained by playing cricket. PCB need to make a policy so that cricketers can comfortably survive in these times.

"Sometimes I don't understand what's behind their physical fitness tests, they seem to have tests very often - even as PSL was ending, they were planning tests after PSL but that didn't happen due to lockdown.

"They want the same fitness level from fast-bowlers, batsmen and wicket-keepers. Everyone has their own body and capabilities. A kid who weighs 60kgs is being asked to lift a weight of 120-130kgs which causes his back to break.

"You have some of your top cricketers, who I will not name, have knee problems.

"So I asked them what's the issue, they said we are made to train so much and lift so much weight; Every 15 days we have fitness tests.

"These guys aren't happy so Misbah should sit down these senior players and get the trainer who likes to do these fitness tests to attend this session and talk about a plan for fitness; The knees of these players aren't in good shape and T20 World Cup is coming, these are humans and it's not like you can replace (their knees like) a car tyre, so let's fix their fitness.

"Shoaib Akhtar said something positive for humanity, I am shocked at Kapil Dev's reply. I have seen many videos from India where people are eating food from the garbage and eating it. So he shouldn't have said something like this. I respect him a lot.

"Yuvi is doing great work, he is working hard for people, for children and my support will always be with him and I would like to request India's people to support his excellent cause, he is working for humanity. He has been given a name and has achieved a lot for India, now if he wants to give back and help people then they should support him.

"We didn't set an example before (about corrupt cricketers) so these things kept on happening.

"Sharjeel Khan amongst many others is my favourite cricketer and opening batsman; I feel that Pakistan has always had a problem of an opener and he is one player who can give Pakistan innings a good start.

"There have been issues (corruption) in the past and PCB have taken a decision to (reinstate players) but the question is if this happens again God Forbid, then what will we do then?

"So either take a decision that whoever does this will be back in the team in 3-4 years or say that such a player is banned from playing domestic and international cricket (forever).

"Lets take one decision so we know where we stand.

"We have a situation that we letting some players (involved in corruption) play domestic cricket but not international cricket; Why are we even letting them play domestic cricket?

"During PSL, I spoke to many players and asked them why they are out of the team. They said that after 1-2 matches where they don't perform, they are put under pressure and not given confidence. I know that players make excuses but mostly players have told me that they are under pressure and are on the verge of being dropped.

"I would like to tell Imran Khan that departmental cricket has played an important role for our cricketers and I think departmental cricket should be restored.

"AB de Villiers was one of the few cricketers who you really want to watch play. I haven't seen any other batsman with such shot-making skills. SA still need a player like that and I think that without him, their team is nothing."

Afridi is completely right. Happy Afridi spoke out about this, maybe people will listen. If we're showing leniency to try and get back our talented players, fine. The biggest issue is thinking about the future. And some point you've got to show a hardline attitude. If we welcome Sharjeel back, and then immediately announce a life ban on all future cricketers in international cricket I would gladly take this. But if you are keep leaving the door open, you're going to keep getting talented cricketers succumbing to fixing. You can not leave it open forever. I'm more upset on us not doing the proper steps to ensure future fixing doesn't happen.

Pakistan is a poor country, with a lot of fixing cases. That doesn't mean you excuse fixing. It means you unfortunately have to set even harder measures to deter it. Make it so that it isn't worth the risk for the monetary gain.

The concerns regarding fitness tests are interesting. 2 schools of thought I guess:

1. Lots of fitness tests and regular checks on players fitness levels.

2. Old-school thought of talent over fitness.

Says the person who supported Amir returning to the team. Afridi is the textbook definition a hypocrite.

As always, everyone needs a personalized plan, you can only streamline so much at the end of the day.
No excuse for being like Sharjeel tho.

Even professional fitness personal trainers tailor training and nutrition programs to an individual Physique and nutritional needs. Unfortunately people like Waqar don't understand this

Yes, PCB is indeed very lenient. He should have been banned for a very long time when he was dancing on the pitch and bitting the ball in front of millions of viewers...

Anyone who has read Ed Hawkins’ book “Bookie Gambler Fixer Spy” will be aware of the explicit accusations that it makes about the Pakistan run chase in the 2011 World Cup semi against India and that the batsmen supposedly involved were never investigated, let alone charged, because it was considered that Pakistan could not afford an even bigger scandal so soon after Amir, Asif and Butt.

I name no names, but it’s obvious that if Hawkins was telling the truth - he says he was given a detailed overview of the Pakistan innings BEFORE it happened - then Pakistan made an example of the wrong players.

Surely you can have middle ground

I like Afridi's point here, Sharjeel is certainly a fun opening batsman to watch but where is the line, he gets banned, comes back...what about players getting banned and coming back to domestic cricket but not being allowed into the international side?

It has to be based on individual cases, Sharjeel was old enough to understand what was happening, was found guilty on 5 accounts and even tried to deny his guilt. Amir was found guilty, was very young, was coerced and accepted his guilt. One is not equivalent to the other.

Sharjeel is someone who is likely to re-offend and should be kept away from the international side. The PCB should also institute a policy where is someone denies their guilt but is found guilty, he is banned for life from the game.

The abdul qayyum report will always remain a blip on Pakistan cricket
Afridi Bhai is definitely speaking the truth

I feel that loyalty and morals mean nothing in PCB. One thing I will always commend the BCCI on is the complete banishment of sreesanth from cricket when his fixing scandal came out, why can’t we do the same for these others? I mean come on would you not be ashamed to return to work having such a big scandal hanging over your head?

Very good interview.

Afraid finally seems to be maturing a little bit. He seems happy to stay out of the limelight where appropriate and step up where needed. He played under Shan and contributed well to MS.

His humanitarian work is really commendable and shows he’s not just ticking boxes - he genuinely cares about this stuff.

I wouldn’t mind him around the national or u19 team in some capacity. He’s never been involved in fixing and though he got into many controversies, those people are often the best teachers as they can draw upon their mistakes and urge others to learn from them.

He’s also charismatic and naturally someone who the younger crickets will look up to and aspire to be like - perhaps even more so than the likes of Younis Khan / Yousaf / Misbah.

Afridi's biggest gripe has been Salman Butt being allowed back in domestic cricket.

He has openly criticised this decision by the PCB on many occasions and in this media talk too.

To be fair Salman Butt blamed Afridi for leaking the scandal to the media and for being selfishly motivated for the captaincy back in 2010 and if that meant destroying Butt's life then so be it. He criticized Afridi non stop in many tv shows and interviews from 2010 to 2013. Doubt Afridi will forget this and adopt a soft stance towards him after all of this

Hafeez plays with BUTT in the team, didnt say a word when LQ wants to take him but opens his mouth for playing with Amir and now Sharjeel.. Such a hypocrite...
